Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD

African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". ✨✧ Amadou BalakeSenor Eclectico – Burkinabe Dance Music Of The 70s ... CD
Oriki (France), Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A definite eclectic groove here – music that has its roots in Mandingo and Dioula rhythms, but also features a fair bit of American funk and soul touches too – sometimes in the heavy grooves on the bottom, sometimes in the rumbling basslines and guitar parts too! The collection is a wonderful look at the early work of singer Amadou Balake – and it features material from the years before his international fame, when he was rooting around in a variety of wonderful styles. There's a gritty quality to most of the work here – and the collection is one that sits nicely next to some of the rougher-edged Nigeria Special sets on Soundway – offering up a similarly refreshing look at a slice of the African scene of the 70s that too often gets obscured by familiar world music cliches. Balake's vocals are pretty great too – but we'll be honest in saying that it's the rhythms, instrumentation, and production of these tunes that we're really digging the most! CD features 13 tracks that include "Aminata Du The", "Fanta", "Dounia Mokolou", "Djeli Fama", "Kambele-ba", "Warba", "Wayisjelequeyele", "Ligda Remba", "Doro Magni", and "Super Bar Konon Mousso". CD

Tassos ChalkiasDivine Reeds – Obscure Recordings From Special Music Recording Company Athens 1966/1967 ... LP
Radio Martiko (Belgium), Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
Divine reeds, indeed – as the set features a host of rare recordings from Greek clarinet player Tassos Chalkias – recorded here for his own short-lived label! Tassos has a sound that's amazing – rooted in older Greek modes, but filled with the sorts of tones you'd hear from modern jazz musicians on the instrument in the postwar years – qualities that are so unique, they even had Benny Goodman once saying that Chalkias had plenty to teach him! Yet there's a lot more going on here than just clarinet – plenty of amazing percussion, exotic stringed instrumentation, and a number of different singers who show up on some of the vocal tracks. The package is every bit as wonderful as the sounds within – a huge booklet that tells the story of Tassos' life and musical journey – with titles that translate as "Berries & Pears", "The Bride's Dance", "I Lost My Loved One", "Old Willow Tree", "Immigrant's Wish", and "For The Sake Of The Damned Money". ✨✧ Don Cherry's New Researches EnsembleOrganic Music Theatre Festival De Chateauvallon 1972 ... CD
INA/Blank Forms, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $20.99
An incredible performance from the great Don Cherry – one that's maybe the most perfect summation we've ever heard of his ability to embrace a globe's worth of influences and make them his own! The set was recorded live at a French jazz festival in 1972, and it has a very compelling group known as the New Researches Ensemble – a lineup that includes Nana Vasconcelos on percussion and berimbau, Christer Bothen on ngoni and piano, Dodou Gouirand on soprano and alto, and Moki Cherry on tanpura – all working in a larger stage setting designed by Moki, with puppet theater as well! The most striking thing might well be the vocals – much more prominent here than on other Cherry recordings, and very soulful as well – blended with jazz expressions and global instrumentation, with a vibe that's almost like some of the best work on the Saravah label during the period. The whole thing's fantastic – a great lost chapter of a musician whose well never seems to run dry – with titles that include "Resa", "Butterfly Friend", "Elixir", "Amazwe", "Witchi Tai To", "Ganesh", "North Brazilian Ceremonial Hymn", and "Dha Dhin Na Dha Tin Na". Alonso Wilson De BrianoFantastic Variety In The Music Of Panama – The Winsor Style & Calypso Impressions (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mokomizik (UK), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 45.99
A wonderful little record, and one that certainly lives up to the "fantastic variety" promise of its title! The set features work from Panamanian pianist Alonso Wilson De Briano – and although you'll see the word "calypso" in the title, the overall sound is maybe more like Cuban jazz of the time – heavy on Latin percussion, and touched with fantastic piano solos alongside the vocals – very sophisticated in sonic construction, but always rhythmic and grooving too! Some tunes have heavier horns, a few moments feel like descarga numbers, and the whole thing's great – with titles that include "My Brother Too", "San Miguel", "Carilimpia", "Tu Unico Amor", "Muchacha", "Windsor", "Me Voy A Panama", "Never Never", and "Lucky Yes I Am". One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

"Africa" is a tune with a longer jamming sound on their album – but cut down here to a shorter take that really sends home the hook! (Funky 45's, Global Grooves) 7-inch, Vinyl record

Cheikh Tidiane SeckTimbuktu – The Music Of Randy Weston ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 16.98
A beautiful little record, and one that seems to take all the African-inspired elements in the music of Randy Weston – and push them even farther than Randy did on his own recordings of the 60s and 70s! The group's headed up by Cheikh Tidiane Seck, not to be confused with Weston's contemporary on the French scene of years back – Chiekh Tidian Fall – and Seck is a great pianist whose talents are spread equally between Fender Rhodes, moog, Hammond, and acoustic piano – in a lineup that also has Yizih Yode on tenor, Mohamed Hafsi on bass, Marque Gilmore on drums, and Adama Dembele on percussion! The rhythms explode beautifully, and differently on each new track – and the album's a perfect fusion of rootsy rhythms and jazz – served up with help from Manu Dibango on one track, and Abd Al Malik on another. Titles include both acoustic piano and Rhodes readings of "Ganawa (Blue Moses)" – plus "African Cookbook", "In Memory Of", "Tanja", "Niger Mambo", and "Timbuktu" – plus the Seck original "Mr Randy". Soutelphan/We Want Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
That's a pretty groovy looking keyboard on the cover – and the record's got a pretty groovy sound as well – very different than other organ records or Mid-East instrumental titles of the time, thanks in part to some very dexterous work on the multi-level keys from Omar El Shariyi! The tunes are all Egyptian melodies by Mohamed Abdel Wahab, but given a very groovy electric spin – in modes that sometimes almost veer towards the moogy, mixed with acoustic percussion, violin lines, and some other nice touches – all of which really keep things interesting in balance with the keyboards. Omar's actually the better-known Ammar El Sherei, working under a pseudonym – and titles include "Ana Wehabieby", "Ahwak", "Gafnoho", "Yawabor Kolly", and "Ah Mennak". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), 2005. Used ... $9.99
Rootsy Latin grooves from Tumba Francesca La Caridad De Oriente – a century old Cuban group dedicated to the preservation of older styles of music and performance! The set has a really earthy feel – recorded recently in Cuba by Soul Jazz Records, but with a timeless quality that takes us back to much earlier days of Afro-Cuban music. The performance is heavy on percussion and vocals – and although the album is a studio recording, there's almost an ethnographic feel overall. Notes are by Ned Sublette, and the album features an introduction to the music by poet Pedro Perez-Sarduy – with titles that include "Societe Guantanamo", "Tambores 2", "Muerive Yo Dila", "Camaguey", "Vamos A Dividir", and "Ven Mi Morena". Amazing music from the golden years of Ethiopian Music – a set of tracks that will take you beyond the music of Mulatu, into a wealth of other talents from the scene at the same time! The sound here is incredible – a mix of heavy funk, spacey jazz, and other exotic touches all coming together – a unique sort of sound that's beyond referent, and which is easily some of the freshest music on the planet back in the 70s! The vinyl-only collection pulls tracks from different volumes of the Ethiopiques CD titles – and offers up a strong focus on the funkiest and grooviest numbers from that legendary series. Tracks include "Muziqawi Silt" by Wallias Band, "Hasabe" by Ayalew Mesfin, "Antchin Yagegnulet" by Tamrat Ferendji, "Amlak Abet Abet" by Asselfetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret, "Temeles" by Alemayehu Eshete & Hirut Bequele, and "Aynotchesh Yerefu" by Samuel Belay. Buda/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
Mad music that's unlike anything else we can think of – a killer collection of funky grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – offered up here on a vinyl-only compilation! The set's a great one if you've heard the music of Mulatu, but want to dig a lot deeper – as the cats included on this set are most of his contemporaries from the golden years of Ethiopian music – and most of them work in a similar offbeat, other-worldly sort of style! Rhythms are skittish, horns are hypnotic, and the vocals on some of the tracks have a weird appeal that really transcends the boundaries of language – almost like another instrumental element that fits in wonderfully with the heavy grooves underneath. Titles on the collection are pulled from various volumes of the Ethiopiques series – making this set kind of a distillation of all its greatness. Tracks include "Yebeqagnal" and "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Queresh Endewaza" by Samuel Belay, "Ewnetegna Feqer" by Hirut Bequele, "Lomiwen Teqebeletch" by Mahmoud Ahmed, "Gedamay" by Getatchew Mekurya, and "Metche New" by Asselefetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret. World Psychedelic Classics, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A funky psychedelic kaliedoscope of grooves from India – killer numbers from the 70s and into the early 80s – Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga, from the folks who put together the equally heavy Psych-Funk 101 and Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas compilations! Most of cuts here have a raw, fuzzed out undercurrent of psychedelia – guitars that buzz or lead searingly, depending on the needs of the number – with heavy, funk-based drums and/or hand percussion with rumbling bass rhythms. From that core, they bust out mightily with more furious percussion, rhythms, mad horn arrangements, and vocals that work as either a sweetener or for even more wild-eyed excitement! In short, global psychedelic funk rhythms with regional Indian folk and classical flourishes, blended with mod, soul, garage and soundtrack influences from around the globe. It's a funky, psychedelic fusion of east and west that's billed as a seminar, but this is no academic endeavor – it's a psych funk party all the way! Includes "The Mod Trade" by The Black Beats, "Psychedelia" by X'Lents, "Somebody To Love – Edit" and "Gairaag Dance Music – Edit" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Dance Music From Hare Rama Hare Krishna" by RD Burman, "Lekar Ham Diwana Dil" by RD Burman feat Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar, "Mary Long" by Atomic Forest, "Dharmatma Theme Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Phir Teri Yaad" by Hemant Bhosle feat Asha Bhosle, "Thanimayil" by Ilaiyaraaja fet Vani Jairam & Chorus and more. 20 tracks in all – with a thick booklet of notes on each track, plus loads of photos, original album & poster art, and more. Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.98
A fantastic collection of music from Cuba – not the jazzy descarga styles that led to salsa, nor the more romantic singers that are maybe some of the nation's best-known artists – but instead a wealth of work that mixes raw percussion and vocals to support the spiritual practice of santeria! The music here represents a shifting spiritual culture that was taking place in the Caribbean during the 20th Century – as African and Spanish ideas were coming into play with each other – forming new modes of understanding, which also led to new musical practices as well! Many of these recordings were done at the same time that larger, more polished orchestras were dominating the Cuban scene – but they represent rootsier, rawer recordings that often just have percussion and vocals as the dominant force – sometimes quite a surprise when you might hear a bigger star as part of the lineup. As with every collection on the Fremeaux label, the package offers up a lot of music for the price, and a very detailed set of notes in both French and English – with a total of 66 tracks in all – including work by Chano Pozo, Miguelito Valdez, Celina Y Reutilio, Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Sabu, Arsenio Rodriguez, Julio Gutierez, and others – as well as a set of field recordings done on acetate in 1940! VariousTo What Strange Place – The Music Of The Ottoman-American Diaspora 1916 to 1929 (3CD set) ... CD
Tompkins Square, Mid 10s-1920s. Used 3CD ... $43.99
An amazing little set – one that shines a brilliant light on music made in America by immigrants from the dissolved Ottoman Empire – all cuts recorded in New York in the teens and twenties, but with a feel that's definitely got an other-worldly feel! The sounds are very exotic right from the start – unusual percussion, string inflections, and offbeat vocals – a melange of Middle Eastern modes brought together by the expansive power of the Ottoman cultural melting pot – then re-sifted by the cultural shakeup of New York! Turkish elements collide with Greek, Syrian, and other regional styles – and instrumentation is heavy on oud and violin, both played with very melancholy tones that possibly indicate a longing for the homeland. Spare percussion figures in often too – and the tracks are a mix of vocal and instrumental numbers – working together surprisingly well, despite the range of artists and nationalities. Compiled by Ian Nagoski, who also wrote the excellent notes and worked on the sound restoration. 56 tracks on 3CDs by Markos Sifinios, M Douzjian, Naim Karakand, George Katsaros, Achilleas Poulos, Kemany Minas, Zabelle Panosian, Marika Papagika, Mis'rli Ibrahim Effendi, Cemil Bey, Shekar Hamim and many more. Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 24.98
It's easy to wake up with grooves this great – a searing back of 70s Afro Rock gems that are also surprisingly funky, too! The tunes here do a wonderful job of mixing psych currents and headier rhythms – a great blend of the burning Afro Funk trends that were happening in Nigeria at the time, but with much richer, trippier work on the guitar and vocals – and some of the freaky, fuzzy basslines too! If some Afro Funk acts drew strong influence from the sharp soul of James Brown, these groups all seem to drink deep from the same musical well as Funkadelic at their freaked-out early best – which means that they've got no trouble throwing in a psych guitar riff alongside soulful vocals and funky rhythms – all with a sound that's completely sublime. Popular African Music (Germany), 1998. Used ... $24.99
Guitar Seche means "acoustic guitar" in French – and a further interpretation also means "straight", or "with nothing added" – a great description of the instrumentation on the CD! The set's wonderfully spare, and quite evocative – with lead guitar from Djessou Mory Kante, backed by other guitarists who bring in a gentle sense of rhythm while still letting Kante's lyrical lead stretch out in some mighty nice ways! There's echoes here of other acoustic guitar traditions – a bit of Baden Powell's complexity, and some of the gypsy swing of the Paris jazz world of the 30s and 40s – and without any vocals, there's a sophistication here that goes way beyond other albums of this nature. B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1973. Used ... $14.99
Insane grooves from arranger Mustafa Ozkent – an artist who was to Turkey what Lalo Schifrin was to the US in the 70s! Like Lalo, Mustafa had a great ear for mixing funkier rhythms and fuller orchestrations – often with odd instrumental twists and turns that bubble over with a fair bit of electricity over heavy percussion – kind of in an Incredible Bongo Band way, but with some moogier touches overall! The record's an instrumental masterpiece through and through – filled with enough heavy breaks to satisfy even the pickiest crate-digger, but also the more complicated arrangements to appeal to fans of funky 70s soundtracks! Status/Prestige, 1964. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Sublime sounds from the always-amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik – a jazz bassist at heart, but also a musician with a great ear for Eastern instrumentation as well! Ahmed cut a few key records at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – and this spellbinding set may well be one of his strongest – a set that moves past some of the more gimmicky use of exotic instrumentation on other albums, and focuses on a jazzy core that really shines strongly on the album's long tracks! There's still a nice sense of the East on the record – thanks to Hamza Aldeen's oud – but the set also features great jazz solos from Seldon Powell on flute and tenor, and the great Ray Nance on both cornet and violin. Drummer Walter Perkins plays with a fluid style that's perfect for the date – and pianist Paul Neves has a lyrical approach to piano that works wonders for the groove. Titles include "Spellbound", "Never On Sunday", "Body & Soul", "Song Of Delilah", and "Cinema Blues". (Jazz, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label Status pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Side two has oxidation, and plays with light crackles. Side 1 is better. Cover has some wear, and split top and bottom seams.)

✨✧ King Sunny Ade & The New African BeatsDestiny ... LP
Atom Park (Nigeria), 1988. Very Good ... $19.99
We have to be honest, we know a little bit about African music, but not a lot. So when we came across a small stack of African records, we scooped them up and put them online, but rather than insult those of you out there who know and love this stuff, we're just listing them at a nice price without trying to describe them, and are confident you fans of the real deep African grooves will be able to know what you're looking at. This album features 10 tracks, including "Destiny", "Mo Gbadura", "Ojowu", "Ipe Ndun", "Laiye Ijosi" and "Teni Ni Teni". LP, Vinyl record album

Afrodyssey OrchestraUnder The Sun (with download) ... LP
Altercat (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $24.99
Great diaspora sounds from Afrodyssey Orchestra – a group who bring so much more to their music than most of their contemporaries – in ways that both tap into their native cultural history in Greece, and really open up some of the deeper jazz currents of their songs! Instrumentation includes the percussion elements you might expect – but we're even more captivated by the work on keyboards and tenor – which really sparkle throughout, and which make the record often feel like some futurist fusion reimagining of Afro Funk inspirations – with a nice lean sound that's more small combo than "orchestra"! Titles include "One For Ry", "Under The Sun", "Sisters & Brothers", "Three Tigers & Three Baby Tigers", "Soil Festivities", and "Mama Africa". LP, Vinyl record album

Tony AllenBlack Voices ... CD
Comet (France), 1999. Used ... $16.99
A seminal set that really put Tony Allen back on top – a record that showed that Allen was way more than just Fela's drummer, or another Afro Funk artist in general – but instead a really free-thinking, deep-concept musician overall! The album comes from key time that Allen spent on the Paris scene in the 90s – really refining a new sound, while keeping all the best bits from before – creating this new sort of darker groove that almost mixes older percussion with kind of a spacey style that's echoes proggish funk from a range of groups from Can to Cymande! There's loads of cool keyboards and tight guitar lines, and even the vocals have some spacey production that makes them fit nicely with the grooves. Titles include "Asiko", "Get Together", "Black Voices", and "The Same Blood", and remixes of "Asiko" and "Black Voices". CD

Tony AllenLagos No Shaking ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 2006. Used ... $9.99
A real back to basics set from Tony Allen – much more strongly in his Afro Funk groove of the late 70s than other recent work, and recorded in Lagos with an earthy approach that's totally great! All the experiments and odd flourishes of recent sets have been stripped away – and Allen returns strongly to his role as a drummer and leader in the post-Fela mode – taking an array of talented musicians through grooves that have a sharp Africa 70 sound! Many tracks have some vocal component, but the real focus here is on the longer jamming sound that Tony first explored with Fela – heard beautifully on Allen's crackling percussion work throughout the set! Titles include "One Tree", "Kilode", "Ogogoro", "Moyege", "Ise Nla", "Morose", and "Aye Le". CD

Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A very different album than some of the more recent efforts from the legendary drummer Tony Allen – and a set that shows that, as the title proclaims, there is no end to the creative talents of the mighty musician – even after he departed our planet! This set has Allen working with a variety of singers and MCs – serving up tunes that mix Afro Funk elements with a heavy dose of hip hop – thanks to contributions from a shifting lineup of guests that includes Sampa The Great, Tsunami, Nah Eeto, Zelooperz, Koreatown Oddity, Danny Brown, Marlowe, and others! Co-production and other instrumentation are from Vincent Taeger and Vincent Taurelle – working here strongly alongside core contributions from Allen, and clearly helping shape the creative sound of the record – on titles that include "Mau Mau", "Coonta Kinte", "Rich Black", "Gang On Holiday", "Stumbling Down", "Tres Magnifique", "Cosmosis", and "My Own". AntibalasFu Chronicles (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Natik AwayezManbarani ... LP
Sublime Frequencies, 2021. New Copy ... $22.99
A contemporary album, but one with a very ancient vibe – recorded in Cairo on a mix of percussion and stringed instruments, and set to vocals that have a wonderful way of cascading over the grooves! From what we can tell, there's no electricity in the instrumentation – which furthers the timeless qualities of the music – and even though the language of the lyrics are beyond us, they're handled with a soulful style that's very transcendent – as is the instrumentation! Titles include "Aden", "The Exodus", "The South", "Manbarani", "You Don't Mind", and "The Land Of Exiles". LP, Vinyl record album

Bande GamboaHorizonte – Revamping Rare Gems From Guinea Bissau & Cabo Verde ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A really fantastic idea for a project – and one that comes off even better than we would have guessed – new versions of classic grooves from the nations of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau, performed by a really well-matched group of singers and musicians, in a mode that's quite different than the usual revival record of this nature! The songs are definitely classics, but the presentation is very contemporary – directed by producer Guts, and Francisco Sousa, with a special ear for avoiding the sorts of cliches that both mar a project like this, and some of the stereotypes that get reinforced by reissues on the market. Instead, there's a fresh criss-crossing of cultures, but one that never waters down the roots at all – maybe a bit like some of the best Parisian productions of the 70s and 80s post-colonial years. Titles include "Dunia Be Tene", "Riba Bass Di Mi", "Citi Ku Liti", "No Guinea", "Mulato Ferrera", "Segunda", and "Di Mas". CD

BelizMemoires ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 2009. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A really cool take on traditions of Guadeloupean musical traditions – served up in a style that echoes some of the blends of jazz and island elements from earlier generations! The group here is a trio – with the great Edmondy Krater on ka, djembe, and percussion – all instruments that are often used in ways that are as melodic as they are rhythmic – and blended with more percussion from Olivier Maurieres and harp from Anne Bacqueyrisse, the last of which is clearly a different variation on the instrument than the more familiar European mode – used to accent some great elements in the percussion with great colors and tones alongside the grooves. There's vocals on a number of tracks, but the percussion/harp interplay is key – and titles include "Natibel", "Mazunga", "Gwadeloup", "Armelance", "Metamorphoses", and "Arawak E Karayib". Crammed (Belgium), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
80s Afro grooves, recorded in Belgium – given a nice twist by the Crammed Discs label, which was one of the first to really open up African styles with more European elements! Bony Bikaye handles vocals, and Hector Zazou plays plenty of keyboards and adds in beat – so there's an electro-styled groove to most cuts, in a mode that's similar to some of the New Africa material on Celluloid Records from the same time! The remaining member of the group handles lots of saxophone solos – but the trio also get some studio help that includes more saxophone from Marc Hollander. Titles include "Angel", "Mr Manager", "Nostalgie", and "Soki Akei". Features the bonus track "Viva La Musica", "Signorina", and "Le Menteur". LP, Vinyl record album

Jo BissoAfrican Disco Experimentals 1974 to 1978 ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 32.99
Don't think "experimental", think funky club tracks – as Jo Bisso did a great job of crossing over to the American mainstream in the 70s, thanks in part to a famous album on TK Records! That work is referenced here, alongside some much more obscure tracks – all with an approach to club music that mixes African touches with some of the more unusual styles of the New York scene – including a few keyboard-heavy moments that would have been right at home on the P&P family of labels! The set's the first to really do justice to the creative talents of Bisso for the clubs – and titles include the long "Play Me" suite, plus "Your Love", "Let's Keep it Together", "Midnight", "Disco Madonna", "Lover's Concerto", "Don't Fight The Feeling", "Love Beat", "Tonight", "Chocodate", "The Mystery With Me", and "Don't Think About It". PMG (Austria), 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Their name may be a mouthful, but the Black Children Sledge Funk Band have a groove that's nice and lean – a wicked blend of basslines, percussion, and lots of riffing guitar – plus these very cool keyboards that wander over the grooves and give the whole thing a sweetly spacey vibe! These guys are definitely on the sharper side of the Afro funk spectrum – and occasionally have some trippy elements in their music – especially when the vocals come together from the group members, which creates a heady quality that lives up to the album's great cover image. Titles include "In Search Of Yesterday", "The Eye That Can See", "Grandfather", "Working Together", and "Boogie Saturday". CD

Blo have gone through a few different phases before this fantastic fourth album – but none of them as funky as the work on this set – which may well set a whole new standard for the Nigerian music legends! The groove here is super-tight, with lots of excellent bass and drums snapping at the bottom – and some of the darkness of their earlier work is replaced by a upbeat style that really lifts the music up – although never in ways that are trying to put a fake smile on things for commercial purposes! Instead, these guys just seem to have a great sense of their own energy – and maybe an even stronger influence from American funk than before, turned towards a grittier Nigerian groove, with some deeply soulful production. Titles include "Scandi Boogie", "Trace Of Suicide", "Music Makes You Happy", "Save Me", "You're So Kind", "Move Up", and "I Miss Your Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album

Sidiku BuariRevolution – Live Disco Show In New York City (180 gram pressing – 2 x 45rpm) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer". ChainoAfricana & Beyond! (Africana/Percussion For Playboys/bonus tracks) ... CD
Dionysus/Bacchus Archives, Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
A great collection of work from the legendary Chaino – music from two albums, plus bonus tracks too! First up is work from Africana – one of the greatest albums by this enigmatic percussionist – a west coast player who made some killer records during the exotica years of the late 50s and early 60s – most of them a lot more hardcore than some of the work by bigger artists on the scene! Africana is fantastic – a mix of hard percussion and spare drum-driven tunes – often with tribal qualities in both the percussion, and the way that vocals are used – usually more grunts or calls than anything else! There's a bit of guitar at times, some slight piano too – but this is hardly the territory of Martin Denny or Les Baxter – as you'll hear on the cuts "Slave Girl", "Poko Cha Cha", "Walking Bongos", "Swamp Girl", and "Breathing Bongos". The work on Percussion For Playboys is very cool – Chaino percussion, but mixed with some hip LA jazz elements – including excellent work on both tenor and flute, which brings out some really jazzy currents in the music – on titles that include "Watusi Ceremonial Dance", "Jungle Mood", "Johannesburg Blues", "Jungle Love Chant", and "Bad & Beautiful". CD continues with 12 more bonus tracks from a variety of other Chaino recordings over the same period – titles that include "Ubangi Rock", "Gone Ape", "Bongo Stick Boogie", "Jungle Chase", "Torture Of The Mau Mau", "Soo Mak", "Toomba Leero", and "Bongos & Whistling". ✨✧ Don CherryOm Shanti Om ... CD
Black Sweat (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
Rare 70s work from Don Cherry, and one of the most perfect realizations of his organic music concept – a quartet session recorded for Italian broadcast, with long songs that have a very spun-out, meditative vibe! Cherry's on pocket trumpet, but is way more than a horn player – as his vocalizations and spirit really guide the whole proceedings – played by a quartet that features Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, Gian Piero Pramaggiore on guitar, and Moki on tanpura! As you can imagine from the mix of instruments, there's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole set – really special sounds that come together with a natural beauty that may well make the record one of Don's most spiritual performances of the 70s – and that's really saying a lot. Titles include "Koye", "Flute Song", "Dissolution", "Nana's Solo", "Om Shanti Om", Luna Turca", and "Chenrezig". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD

Classic work from Stella Chiweshe – a set that gave mbira player Stella Chiweshe much wider exposure than some of her previous records, and a nicely bold sound to match! Stella sings lead vocals, and handles her instrument with amazing dexterity – and also uses a few other percussion instruments too – alongside addition mbira, two marimbas, bass, and drums – almost always moving at a nicely rhythmic clip that really pushes the music forward! The album's never too overproduced – still nicely shy of some of the crossover modes of the growing world music generation – but it does have a fuller quality than some of Chiweshe's earliest music, in part because she's an even more powerful vocalist. Sofrito/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the hippest sounds we've ever heard from Guadeloupe – served up by Erick Cosaque – a singer, percussionist, and key figure in the gwo-ka genre – yet an artist who works in a special space that's all his own! The tunes here definitely have the heavy percussion of gwo-ka, but they also bring in plenty of elements of funk and soul – the latter from Erick's amazing vocal style, which has this really deep flow that's wrapped around a set of French and Creole lyrics, but which has amazing power even if you can't understand the language! There's lots of great elements on keyboards and electric bass, which further helps underscore the funkier part of the music – and the whole thing is the kind of wonderful blend we've always loved from the criss-crossing of cultures in Guadeloupe, but also in a mode that's head and shoulders above most of the rest. Titles include "Joue Zizipan", "Donatien", "Embawgo", "De Chate Cole", "De Ti Mo Pawol Cweol", "L'Heureux Noir", "Jean La Line La Clere", and "Desere Nou De May". CD

The key to the record is its adherence to the idea that less is more – so that the tunes never try to fit too much in the mix, and always have this organic vibe that's mighty nice – and understated in all the right ways. Titles include "Siku", "Siete", "Criancada", "El Diablo Me Va A Llevar", "Arka", "Okami", "Senor De Las Piedras", and "Esu Enia". (New Grooves, Global Grooves) CD
