✨✧ African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". EdiigwuMusic Of The Idoma Of Nigeria – Ediigwu Sings The Ancient Songs Of Oturkpo, Nigeria ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
One of the darkest field recordings on the Folkways label – a set of Ichicha musicmusic traditionally performed during the wake of a funeral – actually recorded during a funeral! Some of the songs are just Ediigwu, but the others are call and response with a full chorus and the ajigo, or kettle drum and the okanga, a two membrane drum, carried slung over a shoulder – and given the setting of the record, there's a very strong undercurrent of sadness in most of the music – not faked or forced in the studio, but genuinely felt emotion at the event. Tracks include "Alekwu Chants", "Onugbu & Oko", "Journey To Igbira", and more. CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

Heerlens Percussie EnsembleBiologic Music ... LP
Hot Mule (France), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really unusual little album – one that partly embraces a globe's worth of acoustic percussion, partly expresses itself in the minimal percussion legacy after Steve Reich's Drumming, and partly embraces some of the electric/acoustic sounds of the New York downtown scene of the early 80s – in work by artists like David Van Tieghem or Peter Gordon! The group use a mix of vibes, balafon, marimbas, and other percussion instruments – then add in occasional beats or other electric elements, but usually in a subtle way – that blend of global and European modes that was also surfacing a bit on the Crammed label at the time. All tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Black Africa", "Back To The Factory", "Kpanlogo", "Biologic Music", and "Adowa". (Out Sound, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ustad Ali Akbar Khan/Ustad Vilayat KhanMusic Of India – Morning & Evening Ragas ... LP
Angel, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Early international recordings made by these two masters of Indian music. The first half features 50s sides by Ali Akbar Khan – oddly narrated with an introduction on each number by Yehudi Menuhin, then giving way to a much longer instrumental passage that features Khan's amazing work on sarod – a multi-stringed, lute-like instrument. Titles include "Rag Sindhu Bhairavi" and "Rag Pilu Baroowa". The second half features work by Ustad Vilayat Khan – possibly the second-best known sitar player in the world in the 60s after Ravi Shankhar, but one with a sound that was sometimes a bit more precise. The tracks by Vilayat Khan are all a bit shorter, and filled with amazing sitar work – eerie tones and notes that dance together beautifully in patterns that unfold slowly. Titles include "Raga Des", "Raga Pahadi", "Raga Shandrakauns Asthai", "Raga Bihag", and "Bhatiyali Dhun". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonafric/Nubiphone (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the funkiest groups we've ever heard from the Cameroon scene – a combo who play with a super-tight sound that often has as much interplay between the vocals as the instruments at the core! As you'd guess from the three guitarists on top of the van in the cover, the group's sound is heavy on guitars – often riffing in these funky ways as the players seem to challenge each other, and create this great flow that moves between American funk and more homegrown styles. Vocals come fast and furious, and often shift between group members – really keeping pace with the energy of all the other instruments too. Titles include "Boo A Nun Muna", "Special Nkumu Asenge", "Kodi", "Pitie", "Kundug Bidza Bidza", "Annie", "Bia Tak Ayi Los", and "Esele Mulema Moam". LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestra BaobabNight At Club Baobab – Senegalese Dance Music Of The 70s ... CD
Oriki (France), 1970s. Used ... $13.99
A tremendous compilation of rare work by one of the hippest African groups of the 70s – the mighty Orchestra Baobab, a combo who wove together many different strands of jazz, funk, and soul! The tunes here are all live ones – recorded in the mid 70s in the group's home turf at Club Baobab, and often done in a looser, more open mode than some of their better-known sessions – a perfect setting for the complicated rhythms, snakey horn parts, and soulful vocals that emerge as the set moves on! A few tracks here get nice and funky – funkier than even we would have expected from the group – and others maintain a compellingly creative sound that really keeps things interesting, with plenty of exotic overtones and otherworldly styles! The whole thing's great – way more than just a collection of 70s Afro Funk, and a record that's nicely links up the worlds of both Fela and Mulatu through its creative interplay of sounds. CD features 13 tracks that include "Jin Ma Jin Ma", "Souleymane", "Saf Mana Dem", "Kelen Ati Leen", "Seeri Koko", "Liti Liti", "Dirarabi", "On Verra", "Cabral", "Wango", "Sey", and "Yolanda". CD

The instrumentation just features bass and drums alongside all the pans – which leaves the sound to come almost exclusively from the combined colors and tones of the mighty steel lineup – all used in a way that's much more complex and fluid than some of the simpler projects of this nature, which usually just try to add a bit of swing to a core Caribbean approach. ✨✧ Selda BagcanSelda ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1975. Used ... $16.99
Funky breaks and fuzzy guitars – one of the most amazing albums to come out of the Turkish scene of the 70s – and one with a sound that really defies categorization! Although the sweet image of a girl and guitar on the cover might make you think the record's a folk set, the overall production is heavily electric – filled with fuzzed-up touches on the guitars, and usually supported by some funky drumming that gives most of the record a cool Eastern break sort of feel! Lyrics aren't in English, but they're oddly compelling even if you don't know what they mean – as Selda's voice has a weird other-wordly quality, and comes off with the same tripped-out qualities as the music! Titles include "Ince Ince", "Nasirli Eller", "Mehmet Emmi", "Dost Uyan", "Gitme", "Kizil Dere", "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz", and "Meydan Sizindir". CD features 5 bonus tracks – but it's not like you've got the original album, and needed those as an incentive to buy the reissue! (Rock, Global Grooves) CD

Ananda ShankarAnanda Shankar (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 27.98
Insanely fantastic! Ananda Shankar was one of the hippest sitar players of the 60s – an artist who was not only steeped in the strongest traditions of Indian music heard in other more mainstream players, but one who also had a keen ear for modder and funkier grooves of the time! This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever – a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work – done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock – all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style – but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk – and the set includes great covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire", plus great original tracks like "Sagar (The Ocean)", "Snow Flower", "Dance Indra", and "Metamorphosis". A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! The set is upbeat and funky, but not entirely disco – more this very groovy blend of Mid-East elements and more familiar keyboards – all moving and grooving in ways that are a lot hipper than any other belly dance music we've heard! Music features piano and organ, plus a very cool "string synthesizer" by played by the leader – and there's also plenty of percussion at the core of the set, making for a nice juxtaposition with the electric elements. AmabanoAmsterdam Ticket (with bonus download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". AntibalasAntibalas ... CD
Daptone, 2012. Used ... $5.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". CD

Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". CD features the bonus track "Fist Of Flowers". CD

Arat Kilo blend together sounds of West Africa, currents of hip hop, and older Mid East modes – all filtered through their unique Parisian perspective, and topped here with help from Mike Ladd and Mamani Keita on vocals! The record's a great evolution of older world music blends that never seemed to gel this well – but which maybe took the efforts of a younger multicultural outfit like this to really hold together! Rhythms are heavy on real percussion, and titles include "Seeds", "Toulo", "Dou Coula", "American Juju", "Soul Flood", "Chaos Embedded", "Yala", "Cilaos", and "Angafile". 2LP set seems to have bonus material from the CD – titles that include "Seeds (inst)", "Dia Barani Tropikal (Kamo rmx)", and "Eshi Swost". Ariya Astrobeat ArkestraTowards Other Worlds ... CD
First Word (UK), 2012. Used ... $9.99
Not Afrobeat, but Astrobeat – a unique hybrid of older funk modes and contemporary cosmic touches – all served up beautifully by Ariya! The album definitely echoes older modes from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – particularly the chugging rhythms and tightly vamping instrumentation that you might know from the work of Fela or Tony Allen – but there's also some more 21st Century elements on the keyboards, which have a crackling bit of electricity that goes beyond the usual electric piano used back in the day – and which really helps give the record a different feel. Don't get us wrong – because nothing here is too slick, overproduced, or remix-heavy – the music is definitely Afro Funk at the core, just inflected in some really sweet ways – and served up mostly instrumental, on cuts that include "Blood In The Water", "Turncoat", "Future Ancestors", "New Frontiers", "Towards Other Worlds", and "Old Ground". Okyerema AsanteSabi ... LP
Atumpan/Kalita (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A lost set from percussionist Okyerema Asante – an African percussionist, but one who made some great music as part of the Black Fire/Oneness Of Juju collective on the DC scene in the 70s! This album follows with a spirit that's a bit like the later work of Oneness – and in fact, the group also features its leader, the excellent Plunky Nakabinde on a variety of saxes and flute. There's a strong dancefloor current at times – mixing funk and soul with deeper roots – similar to Oneness on their Make A Change album, inflected with lots of clubby rhythms and a bit of electronics. The best cut is "That's My Girl" – a 15 minute number that grooves on with some good sax bits from Plunky, and a catchy hook that comes off quite soulfully – but the other long track, "Sabi (Get Down)", is pretty great too. Pascal Atangana is a hell of a singer – one who can move quickly, but with lots of deft changes – over the very dynamic rhythms provided by his excellent backing group! The set was originally issued as a part of a series to showcase the music of Cameroon in the 70s – but it's got a unique quality that's very much its own – often delivered with a very propulsive blend of percussion and fast-moving guitars – rhythms that cascade forward without ever missing a beat, while Pascal does an amazing job of keeping up the pace, and bringing lots of personal inflections to the sound as well. Titles include "Ye Mot Ai Kare Mot", "Amayang Wom", "Aluk Adang Ayia", "Za Ayana Ma", "Oyene Nyolo Ane Nyobok", and "Komedeng". LP, Vinyl record album

Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". Kollington/Soul Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 32.99
An album of heavy righteous power from Alhaji Kollington Ayinla and his Fuji 78 ensemble – a group who bring a very different sound to this record than some of the more mainstream Afro Funk work of the Nigerian scene at the time! The group are heavily percussive, and also use their drums in these inflected ways that open up next to the vocals – yet they're also not afraid to throw in a bit of synth and keyboards, but with modes that are never trying to overwhelm the core fuji energy of the music – which really comes from the hard-driving percussion, and the rising of group vocals next to the lead of Ayinla – all in ways that almost have the righteous energy of prayer, but tuned here towards much more secular politics in the end. The whole record has a timeless power that's undeniable – and titles include "Pataki L'Omo", "To Ba Jisoro Mi", "Won Ti Gbe Oye Fun Mi", "Adio Shile", "E Ye Ika Se", and "Odu Titun De". Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". Ojo BalingoAfrotunes – Best of Juju Vol 2 – Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 26.98
Sorry BambaSorry Bamba Vol 1 – 1970 to 1979 ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 1970s. Used Gatefold ... $11.99
A wonderful testament to the legacy of Malian singer, flute player and group leader Sorry Bamba – documenting his years leading the Kanaga Orchestra Of Mopti throughout the 1970s – and a great, vital release on Thrill Jockey! The region's musical heritage is intergral to Sorry Bamba's music, but it's also relevant and contemporary to its period and ours – with guitar, bass, organ and horns along with more earthy percussion. His style of songs is pretty amazing, too – and often done with a sense of humor that could be easy to overlook to outsiders – but there's no overlooking how great the music is. Beautifully done by Thrill Jockey, compilers Alex Minoff & Ian Eagleson – with input and insight from Sorry Bamba himself. Includes "Yayoroba", "Boro", "Gambari", "Astan Kelly", "Sekou Amadou", "Sayouwe", "Porry", "Aisse", "Bayadjourou" and "Sare Mabo". CD

Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". CD

BelenouEmosyon Tambou-a ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". Rupa BiswasDisco Jazz ... CD
Numero, 1982. New Copy ... $9.99 16.98
A record that's got to be one of the coolest recorded in Calgary during the early 80s – as it offers up a really unusual blend of modes that definitely lives up to its title, and which also borrows a bit from Indian music as well! Singer Rupa Biswas fronts a group that's equally strong on the instrumental tip, and which allow for plenty of room in the tracks to let the players stretch out and solo – in a blend of keyboards and guitar with more traditional sarod and tablas! Rhythms are mostly upbeat, but in ways that are more interesting than the "disco" title implies – especially in 1982 – and the whole thing's maybe first a funky fusion record, which then borrows a bit from Indian percussion, then adds in Rupa's vocals in the lead. Titles include "Aaj Shanibar", "Moja Bhari Moja", "East West Shuffle", and the side-long jam "Ayee Morshume/Be Reham Duniya". CD

Franck Biyong with Cristina ViolleTrouble – Anywhere Trouble (club mix, radio edit, inst)/Trouble (beats) ... 12-inch
Hot Casa (France), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $24.99
A great little funky single from Franck Biyong – part of his continuing evolution and growth as one of the leading lights in the contemporary Afro Funk underground – an artist who's really moved past some of the slavish styles of years behind! Franck adds in both live drums and rhythm programs here – chanting out the vocals with Cristina Violle alongside him in the lead – while keyboardist Florian Pellissier and a jazzy combo keep things moving in the back! All three vocal mixes of the tune are great, but the club mix may well be the best – although the whole four track single works together almost as a mini suite based on the music! ✨✧ BloChapters & Phases – The Complete Albums 1973 to 1975 (Chapter One/Phase II) ... CD
Rev-Ola (UK), 1973/1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest groups of the Nigerian scene of the 70s – presented here in two classic albums, back to back on a single CD! Chapter One is a landmark set of African grooves – very unusual in both conception and execution – with a feel that's unlike anything we can think of! There's definitely a rock influence in the set, but the music isn't rock at all – it's a very dark, almost dubby groove at points – and a bit more straightforwardly funk at others – almost a post-colonial style that clearly comes from a London influence, given to the group by a previous association with Ginger Baker. Rhythms are quite tight, and the bass is as strong as the drums – mixed up nicely with riffing guitar, and moody vocals that color the whole thing nicely. Titles include "Preacherman", "Time To Face The Sun", "We Are Out Together", "Chant To Mother Earth", "Miss Sagitt", "Beware", and "We Gonna Have A Party". Phase II is a critical next step for the group – music that's even deeper than before, but a bit funkier too! There's clearly some touches here of other African funk of the time – especially in the way the guitar parts groove with the rhythms – although those heavy Blo basslines from before are still nicely in place, as are some of the fuzzier production elements too. Titles include "Whole Lot Of Sh*t", "Atide", "Blo", "It's Gonna Be A Good Day", "Native Doctor", and "Don't Take Her Away From Me". CD

BloPhase IV (with bonus download) ... LP
PMG (Austria), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Blo have gone through a few different phases before this fantastic fourth album – but none of them as funky as the work on this set – which may well set a whole new standard for the Nigerian music legends! The groove here is super-tight, with lots of excellent bass and drums snapping at the bottom – and some of the darkness of their earlier work is replaced by a upbeat style that really lifts the music up – although never in ways that are trying to put a fake smile on things for commercial purposes! Instead, these guys just seem to have a great sense of their own energy – and maybe an even stronger influence from American funk than before, turned towards a grittier Nigerian groove, with some deeply soulful production. Titles include "Scandi Boogie", "Trace Of Suicide", "Music Makes You Happy", "Save Me", "You're So Kind", "Move Up", and "I Miss Your Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album

Jagger BotchwayOdze Odze (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Sweet African funk from Jagger Botchway – a musician with roots in The Barons, Hedzoleh Soundz, and Kelenkye Band – stepping out here on his own in a heady brew of percussion, guitar lines, and horns! Some of the cuts are vocal, some are instrumental – and the mix of melody and rhythm is very unique – almost with Caribbean elements filtered into the more Ghanian styles you'd expect from Jagger – with a brightness in the grooves that fits well with the horn parts in the mix! And this special package doubles the content of the original record – by offering up all the album tracks, then adding in a full album of remixes too – which further emphasize the grit in the grooves. Titles include "Odze Odze", "Take Time", "Obleku", "Chapter 5", "Kake Odzole Oye", "Moko Le Dzen", "Odze Oldze (Africaine 808 rmx)", "Moko Le Dzen (Ruf Dug disco dub)", "Take Time (GRC rmx)", "Odze Odze (Alma Negra rmx)", and "Moko Le Dzen (GRC rmx)". Sidiku BuariFeelings In Africa/Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters ... CD
Precious/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A pair of rare records by Sidiku Buari – issued back to back on a single CD! Feelings is a record that was issued on the tiny Precious label – home to only two Buari albums in its tiny catalog – and the set follows strongly on the work that Sidiku recorded in New York during the 70s, records that were initially issued just under his last name! The groove on some tracks is full of early 80s NYC touches – sweet electro keyboards that provide some great middle-ground shocks to the tunes – while beats crackle crispy at the bottom, and Buari sings these slinky soul vocals that are a lot more American than you'd guess from the Ghanaian recording of the album. But other numbers have more of a West Africa vibe – that updating of older modes that was taking place in Nigeria too. Titles include "Music", "Feelings", "Anowar", and "Yayo Papa". Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters has a groove that definitely lives up to its name – a sweet 80s crackle with lots of tunes that jam in an old school funk style – keyboards, basslines, and rhythms right on the money – in a great Transatlantic bridge between Ghana and New York City! The set begins with the super-funky "Let's Go To Funky Town" – a tune with a break on the intro to rival some of the best funky club work of the time – and the vibe continues strongly through the rest of the set, on titles that include "Sophisticated Jammer", "Power To My People", "Rhythm Of Africa", "Minsumobo", and "Karambani". BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 28.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer". King Sunny AdeGems From The Classic Years – 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Shanachie, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $11.99
A well-done collection of some of King Sunny Ade's first recordings in Nigeria – presented in a package with great sound, and a heck of a lot of music overall! The work here has been reissued on other CDs by African Songs in the UK, but this collection is much more all-encompassing – and features a whopping 75 minutes of music, pulled from a variety of different releases. Sunny's at the lead on guitar and vocals on all tracks – and the music is a nicely spare approach to juju, one that's different from his better-known later work on Island. Many titles here are extended medley numbers that are over 15 minutes in length – and tracks include "Ori Mmi Maje N'Te", "Nibi Lekeleke Gbe Nfosho", "I Sele Yi Leju", and "Sunny Special". CD

✨✧ Tony AllenFilm Of Life ... CD
Jazz Village (France), 2014. Used ... $18.99
Maybe the best album we've heard from Tony Allen in years – a really compelling set that still holds onto all the elements we love in his music, but which also introduces all these great other bits as well! The sound's never unfocused or confused – and instead, it kind of allows Allen to leap off in even more expressive styles – still grounded in rhythms that run back to his roots – but filled with creative instrumentation from an array of guests, and some spacey, electric touches that recall the fire in Tony's music when he first sprang back on the scene about a decade ago! Allen adds a few pointed lyrics at points – furthering the "life" presented in the title and great cover image – and titles include "Go Back", "Ire Omo", "Ewa", "Afro Kungfu Beat", "Moving On", "Boat Journey", and "African Man". Camarao OrkestraNacao Africa ... LP
Favorite (France), 2020. New Copy ... $24.99
A great release by this really unique combo – a Brazilian group, but one who are equally interested in the African roots in their music – but in ways that are completely different than any other contemporary act we can think of! Camarao Orkestra aren't one of those Fela-styled Afro Funk combos that have popped up on nearly every scene around the globe in recent years – and instead, the music here is this really beautiful blend of Brazilian percussion, warmer production styles, and some deeper modes borrowed from the other side of the Atlantic – all fused together with instrumentation that's live, spontaneous, and never overproduced – in ways that really take us back to some of the best Brazilian musical experiments of years past! As part of that, the group take on one of the key tunes from the Afro Sambas project of Baden Powell and Vinicius De Moraes – "Canto De Imenja" – and move into their own tunes on other tracks that include "Canto Da Bahia", "Dia De Verao", "Nacao Africa", "Copacabana", and "Guerreiro Yoruba". Julie CokerLife In The Limelight – Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife 1976 to 1981 ... LP
Kalita, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
Classic tracks from the short-but-strong music career of Julie Coker – a huge figure in Nigerian culture, both for her work onscreen and off! Coker recorded a handful of records at the end of the 70s – right at the height of her career – and the tracks here are from two of the three from the time – the albums Tomorrow and Ere Yon. Ere Yon is a very compelling take on more traditional modes of the time – a bit highlife, but often nicely stripped-down, and with these occasional keyboard parts that give a cool spacey sound to the whole thing – a mode that works perfectly with Coker's strong vocal range. The music on Tomorrow is from a few years later, and has a warmer, clubbier vibe – a bit more of the Lagos disco promised in the title, but again handled in a way that's still very unique. Titles include "Iyo Re", "Elelemi", "Ere Yon", "Re Hese", "It's All For You", "Sogio", and "Gossiper Scandal Monger". LP, Vinyl record album
