Hugo MoolenaarMocko Jumbie EP ... LP
Frederiksberg, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $29.99 44.99
Mocko Jumbie is an unusual skill – a the word stands for stilt dancing at carnival time – something that Hugo Moolenaar could do very well, as you'll see on the cover – although he's even better here on record in a musical mode! The EP brings together four of the best tracks from Hugo's rare records – all of them funky, but in a Caribbean mode – with all these light colors bursting over the top of the lively rhythms – riffing guitar next to basslines, percussion, and keyboards – while Hugo calls out the lyrics with plenty of charm throughout. Titles include "Big Man Cry", "Give It Your Best Shot", "We Can Live Together", and "Children Children". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wganda KenyaWganda Kenya ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Massive rhythms from this legendary 70s group – one created in the Discos Fuentes studios in Colombia – as a way to combine some of the bigger African and Caribbean rhythms of the time! The sound is very percussive, and very raw – lots of acoustic elements in the rhythms, mixed with occasional guitar lines here and there – and topped with vocals that are often collaboratively chanted – creating this really strong vibe to the set as the grooves roll on! There's never a dull moment on the set – plenty to please fans of classic Discos Fuentes, and also echoes of other South American scenes – on titles that include "Por Una Negrita", "El Yoyo", "Bayesta", "Fayab Fayab", "El Evangelio", and "An Naus". (Latin, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissue features two non-LP bonus tracks!)

✨✧ Africa NegraAfrica Negra – Antologia No 1 ... LP
Bongo Joe (Switzerland), 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A collection of work from one of the biggest bands on the scene in Sao Tome & Principe years ago – combo who rocked the small island nation with a great blend of West African modes and more tropical sounds! The guitar work is often very lively, and percolating strongly with the rhythms – which themselves maybe have a bit more punch than usual, almost hitting funky drummer moments at times – while the larger ensemble top the sound with these gently cascading horn parts that have the same unified feel as the vocals! Given that the group never got much circulation at the time, and that some of the cuts here were only issued on cassette, the well-done collection is a great addition to our ever-growing knowledge of sounds from this part of the globe – served up on titles that include "Saozinha", "Vence Vitoria", "Carambola", "Ple Can", "Zun Zon Pedelelu", "San Tome Plodozu", "Pedlelo", and "12 De Julho". ✨✧ VariousA Moi La Liberte – Early Electronic Rai – Algerie 1983 to 1990 ... LP
Born Bad (France), 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully well-done collection – one that brings together some of the more hard-hitting tracks from the early days of Algerian rai music – cuts that stand in a really strong contrast to the more polished mode that showed up on record charts during the big years of world music! This isn't the music of the major labels and associated imprints – and instead, almost all the cuts here were issued on small cassette-only releases, which almost seems to be the perfect format for the lo-fi approach of the cuts – often just beats, keyboards, and slight instrumentation – topped by vocals that are incredibly expressive, even beyond the boundaries of language – and which soar out in a wonderful way! The leaner instrumentation only seems to enforce the strength of the singers – in ways that didn't always happen with later rai – and the set brings together 14 rare tracks, with work from Cheb Hader, Nordine Staifi, Chaba Ahmed, Tchier Abdelgani, Cheb Hindi, Houari Benchenet, Chab Mohamed Sghir, Benchenet, and Chab Hamouda. Kokolo100 Fevers/Ciento Fiebres ... LP
Peace & Rhythm, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Kokolo do a great job of mixing up modes here – but maybe that's no surprise, as producer/singer Ray Lugo's been giving us great work for many many years – the kind of globe-opening grooves that really marks a generation who were raised on equal parts American funk and overseas modes! Those influences share center stage here – in grooves that are a bit Latin, a bit Afro-styled, and always pretty darn funky – topped with tight horns, but really driven from the bottom by the basslines and percussion. Titles include "Ethiopia", "How We Gonna Work It Out", "Ghost Riders", "100 Fevers", "La Buena Fe", "The Big Bamboo", and "Afrika Man". LP, Vinyl record album
