VariousTudo Ben – Jorge Ben Covered ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A stunning tribute to the music of Jorge Ben – a host of classic covers from the 60s and 70s, all of which share Jorge's love for an upbeat, soulful groove! The set's exploding with life and energy – that new sort of groove that Ben first unleashed on Brazilian music in the 60s, which was quickly taken up by most of his contemporaries – as you'll hear on the wonderful tunes in this set! There's a ridiculous amount of music on the collection – over two dozen tunes, a number of which we'd never heard before – and although Jorge doesn't sing on any of them, the vocalists are all clearly inspired by his sense of warmth and soul. Every cut's a groover – and titles include "Quem Mandou" by Osmar Milito, "Zazueira" by Wilson Simonal, "Pulo Pulo" by Elza Soares, "Se Voce Quiser Mas Sem Bronquear" by Doris Monteiro, "Tenha Fe Pois Amanha Um Lindo Dia Vai Nascer" and "La Vem Salgueiro" by Os Originais Do Samba, "Carolina Carol Bela" by Os Brazoes, "Speed" by Sonia Santos, "Rei Do Maracatu" by Cyro Aguiar, "Cosa Nostra" by Os Mutreteiros Grilados, "Fio Maravilha" by Marijo, "Pais Tropical" by Wilson Simonal, and "Mas Que Nada" by Elza Soares. ✨✧ VariousGilles Peterson In Brazil ... CD
Ether (UK), 1960s/2004. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A soaring selection of Brazilian groove – selected by the great Gilles Peterson – one of the best collections ever assembled by the world famous DJ! Gilles goes way past the obvious for the sets, which are divided into two discs – one for classic tracks (many of which are actually woefully under-appreciated, in the grand scheme) and a second disc of recent tracks and remixes. The mood is really soaring and soulful throughout – groovy sambas mingle with Brazilian jazz and soul tunes, and cheeky psychedelia-steeped 60s sunshine on the first disc. The mood on disc two is wholly reverent of the samba roots, but it's also awash in modern club grooves – with sputtering post drum & bass, a hip hop beat track sensibility on others, and a straight driving club groove on still others! Disc one (Classicos) includes "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem" by Wilson Simonal, "Berimbau" by Golden Boys, "No Caminho Do Bem" by Tim Maia, "Serrado" by Djavan, "Nana" by Os Cobras, "Zanzibar" by Sergio Mendos & Brasil '77, "Sob O Mar by Jaime E Nair, "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" by Quarteto Em Cy and more. Disc two (Da Hora) includes "Bob" by Otto (Edu K mix feat Bebel Gilberto), "Menino" by Patricia Marx & 4 Hero, "Parabens" by Marcos Valle, "Green Gold" by Spiritual South, "Malandragem" by Drumagick, "Beyond The Rains" (Drumagick city mix) by Mitchell & Dewbury featuring Billie Godfrey, "Moments Of Lust" by DJ Marky & XRS featuring Vikter Duplaix and more.
