✨✧ VariousTempo Jazz Volume 2 ... CD
Right Tempo (Italy), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of obscure jazzy groovers – the excellent 2nd entry in the Tempo Jazz series, and every bit as wonderful and eye-opening as the first! The vibe is incredible – soulful, spiritual, and free-thinking – with just the right touches of modernism to keep things sharp, but enough of an emphasis on the groove to help a few of these cross over to the dancefloor! The set's filled with great numbers you'll never find in the original – like "Funky Billard" by Renato Sellani, "Bankok" by Giorgio Azzolini, "Bloom" by Gianni Basso, "Eskimo Fakiro" by Cladio Fasoli, "Tin Tin Deo" by Tullio de Piscopo – and the fantastic "Duke" by Roberto Mussolini, which has a beautiful mellow electric groove, and this haunting whistling throughout. One of fave tracks ever, and the rest of the stuff's excellent too! CD

✨✧ VariousBad Education Vol 1 – Soul Hits Of Timmion Records ... CD
Timmion/Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic soul tracks from a label we've been loving right from the start – the long-running Timmion Records – a Finnish imprint with an amazing ear for vintage sounds and funky grooves! We know what you're thinking – Finland is a very unlikely source for great soul music – but the company's also worked with American artists right from the start, and has a deep deep appreciation for the classic modes of the vintage 45 underground – which is why this whole package feels like a stack of rare singles you might have found in the back of a New Jersey record store from the 70s! Most numbers here are mellow or midtempo, and are in a mix of deep and sweet soul modes – all handled with superb instrumentation and production from Cold Diamond & Mink, who ensure that the whole thing has just the right vibe. Titles include "Tell Me That You Love Me" by Jonny Benavidez, "Lost Lost Lost" by Pratt & Moody, "Paint Me In A Corner" by Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, "Until You're Mine" by Wanda Felicia, "I'm Still A Man" by Willie West, "This Is What Love Looks Like" by Carlton Jumel Smith, "Bad Education" by Bardo Martinez, "Don't Believe You Like That" by Emilia Sisco, "This Love (part 1)" by Bobby Oroza, and "The Scorpio Walk" by Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators. Factory/Warner, Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 8LP ... $143.99 149.99
A massive package of work from the legendary Factory Records label – that important Manchester home to Joy Division, New Order, and a host of other important UK groups in the post-punk years – a company that got plenty of our pocket change when we were young! Factory was always a cut above the rest – a company that let its artists be freely creative and always adventurous – as they recorded music that went on to have a huge impact on the shape and sound of modern music on both sides of the Atlantic, with a legacy that lasted long after the label closed its doors in the early 90s. This huge 8LP set brings together lots of magic moments from Factory – not just hits, but some great underground gems – titles that include "Deaf" by Crispy Ambulance, "Watching The Hydroplanes" by Tunnelvision, "Time Goes By So Slow" by The Distractions, "Digital" by Joy Division, "Brighter" by Railway Children, "Tasty Fish" by The Other Two, "Kinky Afro" by Happy Mondays, "Compressor" by Biting Tongues, "All At Once" by Stockholm Monsters, "Trickery" by Kalima, "Yashar (John Robie mix)" by Cabaret Voltaire, "Talk About The Past" by The Wake, "Cool As Ice" by 52nd Street, "Taste What's Rhythm" by Swamp Children, "Art On 45" by Royal Family & The Poor, "Knife Slits Water (LP version)" by A Certain Ratio, "Temptation" by New Order, "Messidor" by Durutti Column, "Love Tempo" by Quando Quango, "It's Hard To Be An Egg" by John Dowie, "Dirty Disco" by Section 25, "Nightshift" by The Names, "English Black Boys" by X O Dus, "Shack Up" by A Certain Ratio, "Eletricity (Factory version)" by OMD, and "Dolphin's Spurt" by Minny Pops. ✨✧ VariousFrom The Archive – Compiled By Volcov ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
The archive here appears to be Volcov's own record collection – but that's A-OK with us, because he's got some wonderfully groovy, wonderfully soulful, wonderfully under-discovered records he wants to share with us! The set's got a wicked blend of obscure tracks from decades back, and some contemporary cuts that share a similar vibe – music that's in a really special place between soul, jazz, and fusion – often with a cosmic vibe that gives the whole collection a very righteous sound! Liner notes are by Patrick Forge, who points out how obscure most of these tracks are, and what a special collection this is – and we definitely agree with his words, as most of these tracks are new to us, too. Titles include "Keep The Same Old Feeling" by Hot Quisine, "Do The Right Thing" by JOB, "Go (Chez Damien classic mix)" by The Urban Cru, "The Sound Of The Memory Of Many Living People" by Are & Be, "Arigo (Volcov edit)" by Manfredo Fest, "Turning On To Me" by Oneness Of Juju, "Footprints On The Sand (Shannon Harris Urbanicity reinterpretation)" by Chanan Hanspal, "Sophisticated Disco (Volcov edit)" by O'Donel Levy, "Simon's Melody" by The Antilles, "Part 4" by Shakazulu, and "Sun On My Back" by Bembe Segue. VariousGo Bang – Sleeping Bag 80s Club Classics ... CD
Sleeping Bag/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $29.99
A mighty double-length collection of cuts from the Sleeping Bag label – an important 80s indie that grew up almost completely during the generation of hip hop – which meant that right from the start, the company had a very different approach to soul music and contemporary club! There's plenty of hip hop elements at work here – harder beats, more electro modes, and other street soul elements – mixed with a rising current of house music, but again with a style that's much more tuned towards a New York vibe than the rest. 2CD set features 24 tracks in all – most of them rare 12" mixes – and titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Tiger Stripes (ext mix)" by Felix, "Radio Rhythm (short voc)" by Clandestine, "Weekend (club the wam bam mix)" by Todd Terry, Happiness (orig Frankie Knuckles club 12" mix)" by Nicole, "Let Me Love You For Tonight (orig house club 12")" by Kariya, "Just Waiting For You (master dub 12")" by Ann Marie, "Come Into My Life (Mantronix 12")" by Joyce Sims, "A Little Bit Of Lovin (clubby dubby mix)" by Chocolette, "Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Chill Pill (Danny Krivit mix)" by Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn, and "What Am I Gonna Do About You (Steve Anderson silk on steel mix)" by Tafuri. ✨✧ VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vols 7 & 8 – Calypso, Palm Wine, Mento, Joropo, Steel, & Stringband/Lord Kitchener In England 1948 to 1962 ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare grooves galore – served up by Chicago DJ Sadar Bahar, with just the right kind of depth we'd expect! The set's one of the funkiest in years from the BBE label – and bristles with great energy right from the start – loads of obscure uptempo funky cuts that almost hit a disco mode, but not entirely – laying back instead in that more spontaneous, more live approach to funky music – with a few nice touches of jazz as well! The package includes some real gems from the 70s, plus a few more bits from later years – and titles include "Comin On Strong" by Calender, "Odyssey (part 1)" by Johnny Harris, "Bail Out" by Maxayn, "French Fried Boogie" by Puzzle People, "Striving For Tomorrow" by Moses, "Free" by Seawind, "Scorcher" by Carl Grubbs, "Trying To Get Over" by Sparkles, "Funkyfied" by Chuck Higgins & The Wild Bunch, "Spirit" by Frederic Mercier, and "Mystery Of Ages" by Carlos Garnett. ✨✧ VariousSoul Desirables – 15 Modern Soul Delicacies ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 90s/Early 2000s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's a bit clunky, but the grooves are wonderfully smooth – a great assortment of hard to find tracks from recent years, all brought together in one totally wicked set! The cuts here are pulled from a variety of sources – Japanese-only CDs, previously unreleased sessions, and now out of print albums – all with a warmly contemporary vibe, but one that's steeped in older soul modes from the 70s and early 80s. Many of the artists here are familiar, but they're represented by tracks you probably don't have in your collection – tunes that are definitely "desirables", both for their quality and rarity! Titles include "Bad Company" by Luther Vandross, "Dance" by Sara Devine, "Tell Me" by Tiffany, "For You" by Jack Herrera, "It's Good To Be Loved" by Ronee Martin, "For Goodness Sake" by K Fox, "Cloud 9 (DJ Spinna rmx)" by Donnie, "Dreamin Of One" by Trina Broussard, "Where Did We Go Wrong (so right mix)" by Incognito, "Days Like This (black sand mix)" by Kenny Lattimore, "No Matter What I'll Do" by Donald McCollum, and "Can't Get Over You" by Brigette McWilliams. ✨✧ VariousSoul Spectrum Vol 1 – Dancefloor Soul, Rare Boogie, & Soulful Disco ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent collection of tight modern soul and funky uptempo numbers – cuts that aren't really disco, but which are smoother than the usual funk you'd hear on the Jazzman label – a really unique hybrid that's hand-picked by the mighty Fryer! Lots of the grooves here have a cool indie feel – a bit like Fantasy Records funky soul of the late 70s, and a bit like some of the more soulful club of the east coast scene at the time – and given the tightness of the instrumentation, there's often some nice jazzy touches in the mix – making some of the solos as appealing as the vocals! Most tracks here are of late 70s vintage, although there's a few bits from other years too – and titles include "People" by Elipsis", "Simple Song" by Zebra, "Life Goes On" by Freak, "Rollercoaster" by George Smallwood, "Mellow Feeling" by Barbara Lynn, "Funktown" by Nate Calhoun, "I've Got It" by Tolbert, "Party & Get On Down" by Big Apple Band, "Give Me One More Chance" by Target, "You're The One" by Kings Go Forth, "You're The Best" by Larom Baker, "What About The Child" by Gold, and "Keep Her Happy" by Phillip Wright. VariousSoul Togetherness 2018 – 15 Modern Soul Room Gems ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
A sublime entry in this always-great series – a selection of cuts that are mostly contemporary, but which bubble with a classic soul vibe all the way through! And by "classic", we mean the sound of the early years of modern soul – those late 70s/early 80s groovers from the period when disco started to wane, and a new, more sophisticated groove came into the mix – often more of a midtempo mode, with great songwriting, instrumentation, and an impeccable sense of presentation! There's a few older cuts in the mix, too – and also some nice surprises along the way – and titles include "Your Love" by Kenny Thomas, "That Feelin" by Cornell CC Carter, "Right On Time" by The Apx, "I'll Take Your Word For It" by Lexi, "He's A Hurricane (boogie back ext mix)" by James Day with Cheryl Pepsii Riley & Joe Cunningham, "Pleasure" by Mousse T with Peven Everett, "All Night Long (ext mix)" by John Reid, "Hit Or Miss (album mix)" by Change, "One More Praise" by Brian Courtney Wilson, "One & Only" by The Ritchie Family, "About Your Love (ext mix)" by Jaki Graham, "Lies (groovy soul rmx)" by DJ Spen with Asia Yarwood,"Around The World" by Imaa, and "Shine Your Light (main mix)" by Prefix One with Andrae Melody Palmer. Expansion (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
A killer collection of contemporary soul – served up in a way that really understands what makes classic soul music so great, then finds a way to provide a similar vibe from music that's new! And by that, we don't mean that the music is retro, or old-sounding at all – just that it's got the right balance of righteous energy, warm grooves, and all-out joy that we love in some of the older music that we first started loving from both Soul Togetherness and Expansion Records – a great team when it comes to finding the best of the best of the contemporary underground soul universe! Titles include "What Turns You On" by Lukas Setto, "Giving It Up" by Terri Green Project, "Thirty One" by Laville, "Tell Me" by Solatimsic, "When I Get Back" by Tre Williams, "Good Life (ext)" by Rockie Robbins, "Need Somebody To Love" by TL Shider, "Still Really Love" by Magoo, "All My Life (long version)" by Steve Doc Willoughby, "You & Me (R&B version)" by Glenn Jones, "Make It Last Forever" by Steal Vybe with Alexa Gold, and "Need To Know" by Raheem DeVaughn & Jamecia Bennett. VariousSpring NYC Soul ... CD
Spring (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A fantastic look at the Spring Records label in New York – a company that had a few big crossover hits in the 70s, but also issued a lot more rare and obscure material over the years – with a long legacy that even hit the early years of the old school scene! One of Spring's great contributions was finding a way for fast funk groups to shift into a disco mode when the earliest years of the clubs got going – but there's also a lot more going on here too – including some great deep soul ballads, warm midtempo steppers, and cuts that point the way towards the modern soul generation on the rise. The package also features six never-issued cuts, alongside some well-chosen and overlooked Spring Records gems – all put together with the usual strong notes and excellent sound we love from Ace/Kent! Titles include "If We Get Caught I Don't Know You" by Prince Philip Mitchell, "Falling In Love" by Victor Tavares, "Save The Best For Me" by The Determinations, "Do You Feel Me" by Act I, "I'm The Other Half Of You" by Maxine Weldon, "If You Could Turn Into Me" by The Fatback Band, "Magic's In The Air" by Ronnie Walker, "Hold On" by Ray Godfrey, "If You Say You Love Me" by Us, "The Storm Is Passing Over" by Jackie Verdell, "Beauty" by The Joneses, "Kill The Monster" by Flower Shoppe, "I Ride Alone" by The Internationals, "Get Right" by Richard Barbary, "Daddy's Coming Home" by Prince Harold, and "Of Your Life" by Vernon Brown. ✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! (New Grooves, Funky Compilations) CD

Disco Soul Gold (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Don't let the title fool you – as these aren't the common soul tracks you'd find on the pop charts – and instead represent a great slice of the UK underground scene – soul cuts that are tight and together, but nicely far from the mainstream! The set follows in the mode of the previous set on the Disco Soul Gold label – with elements that hearken back towards more classic soul years, but given a nice contemporary spin – lean, groovy, and very nicely done – more than a few groovers in the mix, but some nice mellower moments too! Titles include "Chill" by Tilly Grace, "For Always" by Ronny Wright, "Be Free (T Groove rmx)" by Yuma Hara feat Monique Dehane, "Your Love (Nigel Lowis chicacadelic mix)" by Kenny Thomas, "Cotton Candy" by Al Lindsay, "Where Will I Go" by Miracle Thomas, "Friday Night (soulful sounds mix)" by Regina Troupe, "Fall Back (UK soul bop)" by Rai, "Can't Love You More" by Tyra Levone, "Come On Home To Me" by Show Tyme, "Best Friend" by Regi Myrix feat Lina, and "I'm There Girl (Ed's R&B mix)" by Ed The Red.
