DJ Spinna takes on P&P Records – and the results are sublime! Spinna's one of the most soulful talents to ever hit the decks – an artist we can always rely on for his crucial ear for older sounds – a really unique sense of taste that always has Spinna picking some of the best cuts from rare records – and finding a way to put them together that turns us on all over again to great music! Given that P&P is a treasure trove of rare grooves, Spinna's got plenty to work with here – and manages to dig into the label with effortless ease – coming up with a wicked blend of funky soul, soulful funk, underground club, and even a bit of hip hop too! This CD version features a full mix of 24 tracks – 80 minutes of music that's tweaked and touched-up here and there with some work on the decks. VariousEquidity Funk – Hard To Find Gems From The Vaults Of P&P Records ... CD
P&P, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
We're not sure what "equidity" means – but the grooves here are so great, we're hardly going to ask for a definition! The package is filled with plenty of the funk promised in the title – but often in ways that are really odd and offbeat – just what you'd expect from a mighty trip through the legendary P&P Records archives! Notes are a bit spare, but most tracks here appear to be from the late 70s and early 80s – mixing earlier funk modes with bits of club and old school hip hop – the latter of which makes for some of the best numbers here, cuts that really step out with a street party sort of feel. Titles include "Robot Dance" by Marvin Wright, "New York Computer Break Dance" by Stax, "Game Of Life (inst" by Lavara & E Mallison, "Gangster Rock" by Little Starsky, "Anyway I Can" by Milton Floyd, "Pound For Pound" by Le'O Roy, "Robot Dance" by Milton Wright, "Disco Hop" by Fly Guy, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "Funk Rap (inst)" by Ikim & Bacardi, "This Is The Way To Break Dance" by Super Coper & Clarence Breaker, and "Let's Do It" by Jesse Gee. VariousP&P Presents Happy Music & Friends – A Selection Of Classic & Cult Disco, Funk, & Soul ... CD
P&P/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
An amazing collection of grooves – all pulled from the legendary P&P Records family of labels from the New York underground – hand-selected by Japanese DJ/collectors Ken Hidaka and Frankie Valentine! If you don't know the P&P groove, this is a great place to start – as the label had a really unique, really wonderful sound – tracks from the disco era, but stripped down to their core – so that the rhythms are really raw, instrumentation is nice and funky, and most of the music has this searing power that's kept the P&P tracks on the hippest of dancefloors for decades! A number of the cuts have really cool electronics, some others bring in some old school modes, and there's an equal balance between vocals and instrumentals that really keeps things exciting. Titles include "I Got You Dancing" by Karisma with Jocelyn Brown, "Ain't It Time (inst)" by Queen Yahna, "Magic Carpet" by High Fidelity, "Pound For Pound" by Le'o Roy, "Spank Me (voc)" by Bobby Mann, "Smooth Talk (inst)" by Mr Fox, "Johnson Jumpin (12" mix)" by Johnson Products, "Got To Get Your Love (voc)" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, "Death Rap" by Margo's Kool Out Crew, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "African Rock" by Licky, "Stomp Your Feet & Dance (voc)" by Kim Taylor, "Roller Rink Funk" by Shift, "New York's Movin" by Ahzz, "Shake Off That Dream (disco)" by Eddie Owen, and "Freaktime" by Scott Davis & The Movements. ✨✧ VariousAmerican Boogie Down – America's Lost Disco, Funk, & Boogie ... CD
Past Due/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two great labels, teamed up in one mighty compilation – a massive batch of rare club tracks unearthed by Chicago's Past Due label, packaged together wonderfully by the folks at BBE! So far, Past Due's efforts have only surfaced as expensive 12" singles – so this collection is the first full length set to showcase the label's music – a treasure trove of under-discovered gems from the indie soul underground of the late 70s and early 80s! The music is to the far left of some of the better-known club work from the east coast of the time – including that of P&P Records – and most cuts here almost fall more in the upbeat funk mode than conventional disco grooves you'd find on bigger labels. Most numbers groove along in a wave of bumping bass, sweet keyboards, and other hip instrumental touches – and vocals are usually deep and soulful, much more so than in ordinary club. 2CD set features one CD of unmixed tracks, and one CD fully mixed with additional work from Paul Randolph – both with titles that include "Galaxy" by Visions Of Tomorrow, "Midnight Rhythm" by The Right Direction, "The Heat Is On" by Lonnie Givens, "Get Up Get Down & Let Your Body Pop" by Greyship Daviz, "Dance" by Destiny In Time Band, "Party" by Monofide, "Kiss You Everywhere" and "You Are Number One" by Devarne, "You Bring Out The Best In Me" by DIT, and "If You Like What We're Doing" by The Fabulous Kings. Mr Bongo (UK), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Brazilian Beats series gets a remake for this 4th volume – and heads into all-new territory to feature a great batch of remix and dancefloor tracks! The tunes include a number of tracks recorded for Mr Bongo over the past few years – the cream of work by some of their groundbreaking artists, many of whom are presented here in remixed versions that differ nicely from the versions on the albums! A proportion of the proceeds from the set go to help out the Street Angels foundation – but the grooves on the disc should be more than enough to make you want to pick this one up!
