Big deal, indeed – as this excellent set looks at a really under-tapped source of sound library funk from the 70s – a small British company who was turning out glorious grooves in the same classic years as KPM or DeWolfe! The players here are mostly British, and many are more obscure than the other UK sound library musicians who worked for the bigger labels – and often had soundtrack and jazz studio recordings as well. These guys are fresh names, with fresh sounds, and some heavy grooves that have hardly seen the light of day after their limited 70s circulation on non-commercial albums. You've got a taste of a few Weinberger tracks on the Bosworth Library Sessions from Strut many years back – but these are all different grooves, chosen with the great ear for jazzy funk we expect from the Sonorama label. Stunningly great compilation of rare jazz tracks from the East German state-run Amiga label. The tracks, which span the dates in the title, were selected by the group Jazzanova for Compost Records, and the material has the same sort of uptempo jazzy sound as some of the best records on Compost. Far from the heavy dirgey sound you might expect from East Germany in the 60's, most of this stuff's surprisingly light, lyrical, and very groovy. There's loads of wonderful modal tracks that you'll never find on original release, and the album is an essential peek at a jazz culture that's even fairly hard to approach by serious collectors! The notes are good, and the compilation includes work by Manfred-Ludwig Sextett, Theo Schumann Combo, Werner Pfuller Quintett, Modern Jazz Big Band '65, and Orchester Klaus Lenz. You may not know the names, but trust us, this stuff's great, and well worth dipping into! CD

Don't be fooled by the title, because the music here isn't really techno – but more the roots of techno – pulled from an array of older jazz, soul, house, and club recordings – brought together in a weird mix of styles by Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig!
