A great criss-crossing of modes at the end of the 60s – music that has roots in country, but which comes off with plenty of funk and soul as well – in styles that were burning strong from LA on eastward, all the way across the south at the time! Some of the grooves here might fall into the "swamp rock" mode of the time – while others showcase hip LA artists mixing rootsy elements with tighter studio production – and a few more have genre-crossing country artists trying on some more soulful modes for good measure. The range of work is really great – and quite surprising, too – and the whole thing's got a great look that really illuminates the music within. DJ Deep does it again – and takes us on a magical journey across decades and cities – bringing back some lost house music gems from Chicago, Detroit, and New York – most of which are from the late 80s and early 90s independent years of the scene! James Brown left a mighty legacy in soul music over the years – not just his own recordings, but a host of other great work inspired by his own genius – recorded by artists who all do a pretty darn good job of copping his groove! This excellent set looks at the prime years of that legacy – the late 60s/early 70s funky 45 underground, which was filled with James Brown-inspired tunes from a variety of artists from all over the country. Yet like most attempts to imitate genius, the real charm here is when the groups go slightly wrong – when they step out of line from straight JB copycatism, and bring either their own genius, or own mistakes into play on the tracks. Compiler Gilles Petard has done a wonderful job of pulling together the best of these tracks – tunes that start out sounding a lot like James Brown, but nicely take a left turn somewhere along the way – often with surprising results! And almost even better, many of these numbers veer into real James Brown jamming territory – that great "part 2" that was almost the better part of the James Brown legacy than part 1! They call it Lowrider Soul on the west coast – and back east, it's maybe known more as sweet soul, or harmony soul – especially given that there's so many groups who are important to the sound! But whatever you want to call it, think of the work here as the perfect sort of slow-stepping, mellow moving soul cuts that sound even better when the lights go down – not because they're sleepy, but because the burning energy of the groups seems to work a very special sort of magic after dark! One of the trippiest entries into the Trip series – and one of the newest selections of tunes too! While most of the other Trip collections bring together some older bits from the Universal catalog, this one mostly sticks to recent years – and melds together a nice blend of electronica and left-of-center pop and rock tracks from the past decade or so – all picked by Gary Lightbody with a bit of help from Roy Kerr. The 2CD version is mixed on both discs – with the tracks sliding into one another nicely. A fantastic entry in this long running series – a batch of compilations that normally focuses on rare disco grooves, but which also features a fair bit of funky soul nuggets this time around! The groove is still mostly uptempo, but with all these wonderfully weird, wild funky elements in the mix too – not gimmicky tracks, but the kind of unusually-crafted cuts that are quite far from the mainstream – and which show that there were often some really amazing things happening in the farther reaches of the soul music underground at the end of the 70s! A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. A fantastic entry in this excellent series – in part because more than half of the music here appears for the first time ever! Yet despite the unreleased status of the tracks, they definitely live up to the "masterpieces" promised by the title – great grooves from a time when more sophisticated production was coming into soul music, but never in a way that was too commercial or chartbound! Instead, these tracks mix all the raw vocals and righteous energy of the early 70s with some more sophisticated styles of arrangement and production – really taking soul music to a new level for the growing generation of the time – with results that were so ahead of their time, even the cuts here that got pressed on wax hardly got much circulation back in the day!
