A funky classic! "Funky Chicken" needs no introduction – as it's chirping guitar grooves and heavy soul vocals are well known to any fan of funk. "Turn Your Damper Down" is a nice little funk tune too – not as hard and heavy, but still pretty nice. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Two lesser known tracks from Booker T – but both nice! "Slim Jenkins" has kind of a slight western tinge on the guitar – stepping around a saloon floor with the kind of edgey approach you'd expect from a guy named "Slim"! "Groovin" is a nice instrumental take on the big crossover hit – done with easily sliding organ and guitar that kind of hint at the later Melting Pot years! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Nice original single that features the MG's hit "Soul Limbo" on one side, and the groovy instrumental "Heads Or Tails" on the other. "Soul Limbo" is a slightly Caribbean track from Booker T and the combo – one that snaps along with a brightly pulsating groove that's a bit of a change, but which still features some nice Hammond over the top! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Frederick Knight was to 70s Stax what William Bell was to the label in the 60s – a smooth, sweet sophisticated singer that was perfect at the southern ballad style. "I've Been Lonely" is one of his best tracks ever – and it's backed here by another number that's equally nice, and which is not the Bill Withers song of similar vintage! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Otis sings James Brown – and with some great results! "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" is done live – with the kind of hard party groove that the track really deserves. "Direct Me" is a slow rolling Memphis number – an original by Steve Cropper and Otis, with the kind of bubbling soul groove that's all-Stax all the way through! 7-inch, Vinyl record

The a-side's a great Stax Records groove from the excellent Soul Children – a track that mixes their wonderful male/female harmonies with warm electric piano lines, and a midtempo groove that really lets the vocal solos soar! "Put Me In The Mood" is a piano-driven romper with an easygoing groove – a bright, sunny number that's topped with this warmly crackling vocal from Sylvia – who really sends the whole thing over the top! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A bit of soul history!!!! This was one of the first-ever singles issued by the early Satellite label that later became Stax. The record was their first big hit – and the fame of the single brought them into conflict with another label called Satellite, who told them they had to change their name. 7-inch, Vinyl record

A rare gem on the tiny Shiptown label – issued here in a very cool pic sleeve for the very first time! "Just A Sad Xmas" is a beautifully slow-burning bit of soul – plenty of organ next to the heartbreaking vocals – as the tune steps along nicely, the builds up as things soar over the top – with a depth that almost feels like classic Stax Records!
