✨✧ Wild MagnoliasSmoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right) (mono, stereo) ... 7-inch
Polydor, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy, rolling bit of New Orleans funk from an all star group that featured the Gaturs' Willie Tee, Earl Turbinton, and other Crescent City session stalwarts like Larry Panna and Julius Farmer! The cut's got a nice jazzy breakdown in the middle – and a sweet electric groove throughout! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(White label promo. In a Polydor sleeve with an index number in pen.)

James BrownI Guess I'll Have To Cry, Cry, Cry/Just Plain Funk ... 7-inch
King, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Two nice ones! "Cry Cry Cry" is a beautiful tear-jerker – produced with strings and orchestral parts behind James, and stunning raw vocals right up front. The flip's an instrumental, with a very horn-driven groove, and a smoking organ solo in the middle! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a King sleeve.)

Lee DorseyHoly Cow/Operation Heartache ... 7-inch
Amy, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Holy cow is right! The a-side of this one is one of Lee's biggest classics – but the flip is even better! Although the track sounds like it's going to be a ballad – it's actually got this amazing New Orleans groove that pops right out of the bucket all the way through! Very catchy stuff, and a wonderful cut by Lee! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Blue label pressing. Label has a drill hole and a small sticker)

Syl JohnsonCome On Sock It To Me/Try Me ... 7-inch
Twilight, Late 60s. Good ... $3.99
Syl was always ready for a sock – and this track is no exception! The tune rolls out with a hard funky groove, and a nice sock-boogaloo groove that's right up there with Syl's best Twinight material. "Try Me" is very nice, too – and features a rolling uptempo horny groove, with raw lyrics from Syl! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Label has some wear.)

Piero Montanari/Roberto ConradoProperly/Acromatic ... 7-inch
Four Flies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99
"Properly" has these really fast drums right from the start – maybe electronic, maybe not – although the rest of the groove has a sweet electric vibe – kind of moogy elements that move up and down the scale to match the funkiness of the tune, cut up by a nice bit of funky guitar! There's lots more guitar on the flipside – as "Acromatic" almost feels like an Italian sound library copy of some Meters instrumental – from the funky bassline, to the timing of the groove, to the nicely scratchy guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited to 350 copies.)

✨✧ Nat BirchallObeah Man/Seeking ... 7-inch
Jazzman (UK), 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic track from the great Nat Birchall – a number that bounds right out of the gate with a modal rhythm that's completely wonderful – then really takes on a strong, soulful shape when Nat soars out on a soprano saxophone solo! "Seeking" has a different groove – drums that are romping and rhythmic – almost an old school soul jazz number, save for all the sharper edges that Birchall brings to his tenor solo! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Shawn Lee's Incredible Tabla BandApache/Bongo Rock ... 7-inch
Ubiquity, 2012/2020. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
That's the Incredible Tabla Band, not the Incredible Bongo Band – a very cool project by Shawn Lee that takes off on the famous bongo-led funk act of the 70s! Both cuts here are remakes of famous funk tunes by the IBB – and sound almost exactly like the originals right down at the core, from the horns, to the drums, to the cool organ swirls – save for the fact that instead of bongos, you'll hear tablas – and maybe a bit of sitar on the side, to further the Indian-styled groove of the music! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ 100% Pure PoisonWindy C Collection (2 x 7 inch set) ... 7-inch
Dynamite Cuts (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2 x 7 inch set (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
A double 7" package of work from one of the rarest soul records of the 70s – recorded in Germany by a bunch of American servicemen on leave, but with a sound that's right out of the Chicago or Detroit groove of the pre-disco years! The group's great with both the funky and soulful material – hitting hard with monster groovers like "Holes In My Shoes" and the jazzy break classic "Windy C" – almost like some of the jazzy soul albums on Fantasy from the mid 70s. Also includes a special 45 edit of "No More City No More Country" – and the track "Puppet On A Chain". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Gloria Ann TaylorLove Is A Hurtin Thing/Brother Less Than A Man (red colored vinyl pressing) ... 7-inch
Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Some mighty fierce, almost freaky guitar starts out this rare gem from Gloria Ann Taylor – before these weirdly exotic strings come in and warm things up, then set a course for Taylor's vocals to follow! Guitar returns strongly for this nice trippy solo in the middle – and really makes the track something unique! "Brother Less Than A Man" has a nicely righteous vibe – congas with the rhythms, and this gospelly lead from Gloria right at the start – before soaring into the fierce, powerful groove of the cut – which almost feels like one of Archie Shepp's more spiritual experiments from the early 70s – but with heavy guitar instead of tenor! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Red vinyl pressing!)

✨✧ James BrownGet Up, Get Into It, Get Involved (parts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
King, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A stormer! The groove is super-funky, very raw, and James belts out a political messge that will get you out of the house and into the situation! Bobby Byrd joins in on the chorus, for a nice raw sound next to James' tighter vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a King sleeve, with some pen and a sticker near the top right corner.)

Dining Rooms with Sean MartinWhen You Died (original, Massimo Martellotta rmx) ... 7-inch
Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $6.99
Sean Martin provides some great lead vocals on this slinky groove from The Dining Rooms – a tune that's got riffing guitar nestled right down in the rhythms, and a fuller, funkier feel as things move on! The remix on the flip really changes things up nicely – dropping the guitar for a more 80s-styled bassline that's also peppered with plenty of warm keys – an equally great setting for Martin's vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Johnny Griffith IncGrand Central Shuttle/My Love (RCA) ... 7-inch
RCA, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Funky work from this excellent Detroit keyboardist! "Grand Central" is a humming instrumental – one that begins with raw guitar licks and hi-hats, plucking out the groove before more guitar scratches on in, and Johnny comes over the top on some hard piano lines. Wah wah gets into the mix – and there's a funky breakdown that's right off a Lalo Schifrin 70s soundtrack. Very nice! The flip's a ballad – in case you were wondering – and pretty sleepy at that. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In an RCA sleeve, including jukebox strips.)

Young-Holt TrioWack Wack/This Little Light Of Mine ... 7-inch
Brunswick, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
One of the Young-Holt group's greatest tracks! "Wack Wack" is a stunning little jazzy groover – heavy left hand on the piano, with acoustic bass bouncing along on the groove, all very catchy, and with shouted vocals over the top! Great stuff – and proof that the guys were on the right track away from Ramsey Lewis! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Label has a small sticker.)

Star Creature, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky bass, spacey keys and cosmic club atmosphere from E Live! "Whisper To Me" has a bigger sound than you might expect from the title with a compelling beat, fusion funk keys and a thick bass groove. "Interglactic System Of Funk" picks up right were it leaves off, soaring off into a spacier realm from there. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ California PlayboysJust Say A Four Letter Word/She's A Real Sweet Woman ... 7-inch
Kent (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great bit of sharply-timed funk from the California Playboys – a tune that's got some great changes at the start, then rolls into a wicked groove that supports the vocals with this nicely-toned riffing guitar! The flipside has an equally great sound – the kind of funk group that can be right on the money without ever sounding slick – perfect for the vocals, which have more of a deep soul vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Five Stairsteps & CubieMadam Mary/Little Boy Blue ... 7-inch
Curtom, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Some heavy work from the 5 Stairsteps – rumbling along here with a tight Curtom groove! "Madam Mary" is a Curtis Mayfield tune that's arranged here by Donny Hathaway in a super-dope soundtracky approach – making it one of the group's more righteous tunes of the time! "Little Boy Blue" is another Curtis tune, again arranged by Donny, and showing a side of the group that sounds a lot like mid 60s Impressions! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Label has a drillhole.)

Partial matches22

Bobby JonesYou're A Devil/We'll Love Each Other (Love Me Forever) ... 7-inch
Expo, Late 60s. Good ... $2.99
Nice one! "You're A Devil" is a nice deep soul groover from this Chicago singer from the 60s. The track starts with a fuzzy fuzzy guitar, and rolls into a nice vocal that has Bobby's rich voice backed by some sweet arrangements. Very trippy on the intro – and the mad guitar really sets the pace of the tune! Bobby's voice is great, too – right up there with Tyrone Davis and Syl Johnson. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Partial matches23

Sonny LovallGhetto Boy (parts 1 & 2) ... 7-inch
Mystic, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A nice little groover – a righteous message cut, in case you couldn't guess by the title, with a smooth funky backing that has some nice clavinet. Sonny's got a deep soul voice that's almost southern – and the single was arranged by Dunn Pearson, with production by Lou Ragland. 7-inch, Vinyl record

A great little soul track by Frankie! All quite nice – a real party cut that mixes soul and funk in a really groovy way! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Label has some wear.)
