Contemporary funk singer Rickey Calloway owes plenty to James Brown's work of the 60s – and he makes that connection very clear here, by serving up a totally smoking version of James' classic "There Was A Time"! Rickey takes the track at a clip that's amazing – even faster than some of The Godfather's live recordings – and his group keep things lean and funky throughout – even on the instrumental! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A beautiful contemporary bit of sweet soul – a tune that dips and swells in a mighty nice way, with a slow funk groove at the bottom, and these heartbreaking vocals from Marietta Smithover the top! "Suns Of Marvin" is faster and funkier, and instrumental – with a great drum/bass/riffing guitar line that feels like some rare funky 45 from back in the day – right down to the gritty production that really sends things over the top! Nice vibes solo in the middle, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Soul singer Marietta Smith steps out with a gentle glide over the funky stepping rhythms of "Tumblin Down" – really helping open up the motion of the tune as she works with a very distinct vocal approach! The flipside's an instrumental, "Return Of The Soul Sabre" – one that has the group really kicking it with great funky drums, a catchy organ line, and some cool spacey touches on the guitar that make the whole thing sound spacey and spooky – but funky too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Nothing halting about this killer cut – a fuzzy, funky number that has lots of tripped-out guitar over heavy drums – and some phase-shifting chromatic element in the mix that may be processed vibes, or something far more mysterious! "Euler Spiral" is equally heady, but a very different number – a slow, spacey groove that takes its funk very slow – almost like some of the cool Johnny Harris instrumentals from years back! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Legendary Latin Soul singer Joe Bataan joins the Funkool Orchestra on "Can't Keep Foolin" – a cut that makes really great use of those heartbreaking vocals that made Joe such a sweet soul giant at the end of the 60s! The tune's got an unusual approach – as it moves fast at points, then slows, then grooves again – and Joe's vocally great in both modes! The flipside features a different singer, and has a Latin funk vibe that's very old school overall! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A slow-building monster – nice bass that rumbles around in a cool wavy pattern, topped with this gently cascading electric piano line that builds in a really cool way, and tangled with these echoey guitar lines – as the whole thing builds and rises, ebbs then flows! "Catching Stars" has a similar slow funk vibe, but more break in the drums this time around – peppered by great Fender Rhodes – and production on both tracks has almost a Johnny Harris sort of vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A wonderfully trippy bit of funk – a cut that begins with monkish vocals to suit the title, then moves into a sweet sitar line once the funky drums kick things up – moving at a slow-stepping groove as the sitar gives way to fuzzy guitar! "Medicine Bag" is nice and funky too – more massive drums, and this cool spooky psych-styled production – almost in a Stark Reality vein! 7-inch, Vinyl record
The bass dives deep, but the percussion percolates nicely over the top – almost a Miami 70s funk groove, but more offbeat overall – as are the cool reed lines that get voiced over the groove in an excellent way! The percussion's even better on the flipside, which has a TK Records-style drum break at the beginning – as the cut then opens up to all sorts of cool psychedelic guitar, produced to perfection by Misha Panfilov! 7-inch, Vinyl record
The breaks are in the house – and definitely very much as promised in the title – as "Stardust" has a really wicked drum break that skips along nicely, with some conga bits next to the drums – while a splashy, bassy keyboard part does all sorts of cool things in the middle! "Space Break" has funky drums moving at a different pace, but with an equally sharp quality – and the tune has lots more cool moogy and spacey keyboards! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Smith is Marietta Smith, whose soulful vocals really send both cuts here over the top! "Shadows" has a great mix of soaring horns and funky drums – this kind of quick strutting groove that's pumped up in all sorts of cool ways by the vocals, which also do great things on a breakdown in the middle! "Nothing Lasts Forever" has a cool bass/percussion break that populates the groove – richer than the standard sort of funk rhythm, which only serves to open up Smith even more! 7-inch, Vinyl record
"Wireman" has a groove that owes plenty to The Meters, but in the best way possible – as Harbans takes a mix of funky drums, organ, and riffing guitar – then makes it his own with a nicely jazzy sax solo, which has almost a laidback Stanley Turrentine CTI sort of vibe! "Beyond The Cosmic Ray" is slower and spookier – funky drums, but a very cool vibey keyboard sound that makes you feel like you're not getting away from the cosmic ray after all! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A mighty nice take on this tune you'll recognize as a funky classic from the Talking Heads – done here with a massive drum break at the beginning, which sets the tone for an even funkier version of the cut than the familiar one – as do the vocals of Coko, a soulful singer with just the right sense of timing to bring the best out of the lyrics! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A totally great take on the Joe McPhee funky classic "Shakey Jake" – done in a way that's tighter and even more compact than the original – but with some fantastic horn work throughout! There's lots of riffing guitar next to organ over fast-romping drums – and the tenor, trumpet, and other horns criss-cross in this really wonderful way! "Night Dream" is a slower number with a wide-open approach to funk – great drums and congas slow-stepping together to set up the groove – then warmed up by a nice long solo on Fender Rhodes! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A trio of heavy hitters from the DeWolfe sound library – all pulled from the super-rare Night Moves album! "Night Moves" is a great bit of slow funk – heavy drums stepping carefully while a clavi line does all these cool things in the middle! "Bank Job" is nicely slow – like they're setting up the heist with Fender Rhodes, and taking their time to get things right! "Zero Hour" is maybe a bit more urgent, but still nicely laidback – funky punching drums at the bottom, peppered by riffing guitar and some mighty nice keyboards! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Nice one from Shorty Long – and much more in the vein of his funk work, than his soul stuff. The a-side's a shouted vocal version of this stormer, but we like the flip even better, as it's a cool instrumental, with Shorty laying down some firey organ licks! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Beautiful harmony soul from Act 1 – a group we totally love when they're in this mode – just grooving enough to open up the vocals a bit, stepping along with some great east coast sweet soul production! "Night Of The Wolf" is a completely different track, but equally groovy – a sharp funky instrumental with all sorts of fast-riffing guitar, taken from a rare Italian sound library album of the 70s – and topped with a cool whistle that almost has a spaghetti western vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record
One of the blueprints of hip hop! At the time, Chic's "Good Times" just seemed like a wickedly funky pop tune – but who knew that that bass and guitar groove would inspire a whole generation of hip hoppers, bouncing along in a groove that was at once at home on the roller rink or the wheels of steel! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Groundbreaking early work from James! We're not sure when "Let Yourself Go" was released – but it's got these fantastic guitars on the beat, very much in the "Papa's Brand New Bag" or "Out Of Sight" mode, although a bit rawer and rootsier. Proof though, that James had a handle on funk as early as he wanted to! Great stuff – and one of those cuts that should be discovered a bit more! 7-inch, Vinyl record
