Baby Huey & The BabysittersMighty Mighty Children (parts 1 & 2) (Radio Active pressing) ... 7-inch
Radio Active, 1969. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Classic soul from Chicago! The 300-pound Baby Huey was one of the city's premier party acts in the old days, and this single – his cover of the rollicking Curtis Mayfield tune (which was later done by Chicago soul descendents Earth, Wind & Fire) – is one of his best! The two-part track has a rolling party funk groove, with production by Curtis, and arrangements by Donny Hathaway! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Radio Active sleeve with light wear & pen.)

King Ernest BakerSomebody Somewhere (Is Playing With Yours) (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Funk Records, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A hard bluesy soul number – with a punchy funky sound that feels like it was recorded right off the west side! The best cut is actually the instrumental – as Ernest's vocals are dropped out, leaving more room for vamping guitars and a Hammond organ to take a solo. Backing is by The Pipes Of Peace, a groovy little Chicago combo – with lots of horns on this one! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Gene Chandler & Jaime LynnYou're The One/I Keep Coming Back For More ... 7-inch
Salsoul, Early 1980s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Although Gene Chandler is best known for his 60's Chicago soul hits, he also did some great modern soul tracks right around the turn of the 80's. This cut is one of them, and it's a sweet midtempo duet with Jaime Lynn that features some excellent mellow arrangements by Sonny Sanders. Gene's voice is as great as ever, and the production is very nice. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Mamie GaloreIt Ain't Necessary/Don't Think I Could Stand It ... 7-inch
St Lawrence, 1966. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Classic Chicago soul from Mamie Galore! "It Ain't Necessary" has a rolling party groove that fits Mamie's husky vocal style really well. Monk Higgins is leading the arrangements, and the tracks' got a soaring northern groove that's very nice! "Don't Think" shows off Mamie's work on a ballad number – with slow horns vamping behind her, and some additional femal vocals on the chorus. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have minimal wear.)

Garland GreenLet The Good Times Roll/You And I Go Good Together ... 7-inch
Spring, 1974. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Garland Green's great remake of this classic! He sings it with a nice deep Chicago soul style, augmented by some of the slightly modern/southern style production of the Spring label. "You & I Go Good" is even better, though – a sweetly stepping number that follows in the spirit of Garland's Uni classics – crackling vocals sounding wonderful on the top, while an undeniable groove bubbles in the back! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Spring sleeve with light pencil. Labels have some pen.)

Guys & DollsChinatown/Could This Be Love ... 7-inch
Karol, 1970. Very Good ... $4.99
One of our favorite ever singles from Chicago! "Chinatown" is a hilarous (and slightly racist) soul track about the asian community, with some great fake "Chinese" singing. Very much in the tradition of tracks like "Ling Ting Tong"! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Light Touch BandChic-C-A-G-O/Sexy Lady ... 7-inch
Magic Touch/Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 9.99
A really cool cut from the Chicago scene – a bassy boogie number, but one with a bit of a rap as well – a great tribute to our Windy City home, backed with a very catchy chorus! There's plenty of bass in "Sexy Lady" too – very old school, snapping, and with a rollerskating pace – in support of lyrics that are sung and spoken, often with some very cool processing to trip things out 7-inch, Vinyl record

Love, Devotion, & HappinessJoy, Sweet Joy/Yesterday's Fool ... 7-inch
P.E.U. Jadan, Early 70s. Very Good ... $14.99
Nice! We don't know if this is the same Love, Devotion, & Happiness that later recorded for RCA – but the single's an obscure one, on a tiny Chicago label, with arrangements by Tom Tom Washington. "Joy Sweet Joy" is a nice mellow mid-tempo track, with a dope production sound, and sweet soulful female vocals. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Vinyl has an edge chip, and plays with a click at the very beginning of "Joy")

✨✧ Cash McCallMore Power To You/I'll Always Love You ... 7-inch
PS Records, Early 70s. Very Good- ... $19.99
Excellent work from this Chicago soul great! "More Power" is one of Cash's best songs – and it's got a hard-rolling funky sound that reminds us a lot of some of Syl Johnson's work on Twinight. Like those cuts, it's got a rolling bass at the bottom – pushing Cash's voice over the top, and keeping the track humming all the way through. "I'll Always Love" is great too – a slower ballad number, but done beautifully, with raw vocals from Cash! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Bobby MooreYour Love & My Love Together/Give Me Your Love Right Now ... 7-inch
Checker, 1970. Very Good ... $19.99
Two sides recorded by Bobby with Cash McCall in Chicago – both original tunes by Bobby, handled with a deep soul approach. "Give Me Your Love" has a bit of a Tyrone Davis sort of swing to it – guitar working around the bouncing bassline, as Bobby's vocals swing out a bit more than usual, in a good way that makes the song nice and catchy! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo in a Chess sleeve.)

MystiqueSomebody Somebody To Love Me/It Took A Woman Like You ... 7-inch
Curtom, 1977. Near Mint- ... $4.99
The mellower side of Mystique – one of Chicago's more uptempo funk ensembles from the 70s! "Somebody Somebody" is a catchy little love tune – penned and arranged by Richard Rome, and produced by Bunny Sigler with a mellow sort of Philly feel. "It Took A Woman" is even better – more in a mellow Chicago soul mode, with a very laidback and slow-moving groove – and some great harmonies on the vocals of the tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jackie RossHoney Dear/We Can Do It ... 7-inch
Chess, 1965. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Sweet soul from one of Chicago's sweetest! "Honey Dear" has Jackie singing with a bit of a sad and wispy tone – almost quiet, but also sad and dreamy. "We Can Do It" is the better track, though – and has this introspective approach at the beginning, then builds with a proud stepping sound that's a much better illustration of the depth of Jackie at the height of her powers! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Paris Smith QuintetThought Seeds/Lilith Came ... 7-inch
Oracle/Jazzaggression (Finland), Mid 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99 19.99
Two amazing tracks from underground Chicago jazz legend Paris Smith – back to back on a limited 45! "Thought Seeds" is this amazing blend of vibes, alto sax, and haunting female vocals – a very righteous tune, and one with a spirit that's unlike anything else we can think of – dark, but vibrantly positive too – with a nice solo from Jimmy Ellis near the end! "Lilith Came" has never been on vinyl before – an overlooked gem from Paris CD-only release from the 90s – with more beautiful vibes, and a lyric that's as haunting as the title! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Star-TelsExterminator Man/What More Can I Ask For ... 7-inch
Lamarr, 1970. Very Good+ ... $23.99
Groovy Chicago soul group single! "Exterminator" is a sort of Temps-ish track about bugs – kind of a political number about the vermin in the ghetto! "What More" is even better – a fantastic group harmony track with a deep feeling, sweet vocals, and great production by Burgess Gardner. It's a wonderful late-nite cut – and it's "Bunky's Pick" too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have initials in pen, faint ring wear.)

Thunderfunk SymphonySky Blue/Hard Times ... 7-inch
Innovation 2, Late 70s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
An obscure one from this Chicago group – not nearly as thundering as their name might imply, but still pretty decent overall. "Hard Times" is kind of a rock funk number, with some weirdly flanged guitars that pep things up a bit – but the best cut is "Sky Blue", a good midtempo club number, with kind of a rolling east coast pre-disco groove, and some nice funky flute! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Toddlin' Town SoundsIt's Your Thing/Dud ... 7-inch
Toddlin Town, 1969. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Two nice funky instrumentals by the studio band for this obscure Chicago funk label! "It's Your Thing" is the famous Isleys track, and itgrooves as nicely as any cover of the track. "The Dud" has some nice weird instrumental moments, with horns chugging over equally chugging bass and drums. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Pink label pressing.)

Tomorrow's PeopleOpen Soul (T-Groove edit)/It Ain't Fair ... 7-inch
Stage Productions/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $18.99 24.99
Chicago's Tomorrow's People take on their classic anthem "Open Soul" – a 70s funky number with a great lyrical query into the nature of soul – served up here with a T-Groove edit that makes the tune funkier than ever! "It Ain't Fair" is fantastic, but in a very different way – slower righteous funky soul – stepping along nicely with a bassline that sets a groovy pace, and topped with heartbreaking lyrics that give way to an offbeat alto solo in the middle! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Limited Japanese pressing.)
