One of the funkiest cuts ever from reedman Harold Alexander – served up here in the 45rpm single version, which is short, tight, and really concentrates on the funky drums at the core – although still also topped with plenty of fierce funky flute from the man himself! Speaking of funky drums, Pretty Purdie is on the flipside with "Heavy Soul Slinger" – a cut that definitely earns its name, as the funky drums mix with great conga, massive bass, and this warm organ line that really sends the whole thing home! 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of the best versions of "Funky Four Corners" we've ever heard! The bass is rattling along at a level so loud and heavy that it's bound to pop the top off your speaker – while Jerry screams and shouts his way through the lyrics in a way that would make James Brown proud, a fact that he even acknowledges when he shouts "Sorry JB!" at one point in the cut! "Soul Lover" is fantastic too – a funky answer song to "Tramp", with a similar hard sock beat, and a hard break at the intro, which is augmented here by conga work! Chicago's Tomorrow's People take on their classic anthem "Open Soul" – a 70s funky number with a great lyrical query into the nature of soul – served up here with a T-Groove edit that makes the tune funkier than ever! "It Ain't Fair" is fantastic, but in a very different way – slower righteous funky soul – stepping along nicely with a bassline that sets a groovy pace, and topped with heartbreaking lyrics that give way to an offbeat alto solo in the middle! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A really romping single from the lesser-known Connie Austin – a cut that's as funky as is soulful, with a set of backings that comes down right on the money, while a little conga line kicks things right back over the top! The approach allows Connie's vocals to really soar – giving the whole thing an unexpectedly righteous vibe! Charles Spurling steps out on the flipside – a storming Northern Soul number recorded in the 60s, but which appears here on a 45 for the first time ever! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Although Gene Chandler is best known for his 60's Chicago soul hits, he also did some great modern soul tracks right around the turn of the 80's. This cut is one of them, and it's a sweet midtempo duet with Jaime Lynn that features some excellent mellow arrangements by Sonny Sanders. Gene's voice is as great as ever, and the production is very nice. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Some of the earliest work ever issued by the great Georgie Fame – a 4-track EP that features all instrumental tracks with Georgie on the Hammond – serving up a unique groove that really spoke to the changing London scene of the time! The rhythms here are part of the package, and definitely echo some of the new immigrants and their styles arriving in West London – while Fame's solos on organ also show plenty of influence from American players too, both in the jazz and soul instrumental modes! Titles include "Rik's Tune", "JA Blues", "Orange Street", and "Stop Right Here". 7-inch, Vinyl record

The biggest hit ever by The Free Movement – issued here in a pre-Columbia 45 on Decca! The track's got a sad slow style that's almost LA pop-soul – and builds with the vocals into a very nice harmony track. The flip's pretty nice too – chugging and a little funky, but ultimately in the same sort of style. 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of our favorite ever singles from Chicago! "Chinatown" is a hilarous (and slightly racist) soul track about the asian community, with some great fake "Chinese" singing. Very much in the tradition of tracks like "Ling Ting Tong"! 7-inch, Vinyl record

"Keep It To Yourself" is a fantastic fantastic fantastic soul track, and probably the greatest cut ever to come from the pen of Billy Butler. Billy performs it here with his group Infinity, and the track rivals anything his brother Jerry ever did. It's got a sweet sad ballad feel, and some amazing arrangements, courtesy of Vince Willis. Very nice, and we don't believe it's on his LP with the group. Plus, the flip's a nice uptempo progressive soul cut, with good vocals. 7-inch, Vinyl record

A killer bit of New Jersey soul from the 70s – and one of our favorite Moments tracks ever! Harry Ray steps out as the lead of the group on this one – but is still supported by some great Moments harmonies at times. But the real appeal of the track is the amazing arrangement – which starts out with echoey piano over a funky beat – then keeps this snapping Sylvia-like groove that runs throughout! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A couple of smooth numbers by this fatastic harmony group who only ever issued a couple singles on the MGM subsidiary Lion. Both numbers hit a righteous sweet soul harmony groove over some great soaring production touches! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Amazing stuff from Otis Clay. "Easier Said Than Done" is a nice hard uptempo soul cut, with very raw vocals – but it's the slower religiosity of "Flame In Your Heart" that leaves us breathless. It's got a hard, heavy, moanin' style, and Otis' voice hit notes that we've hardly ever heard him hit before. 7-inch, Vinyl record

A whole different side of this Chicago soul special agent! "Too Many Memories" has Mamie working with Willie Henderson – singing sad, but soulfully, over a stomping groove that's laid out with bass, drum, and this nice kind of snapping percussion. A well-paced dancefloor track – and backed with the deep deep soul ballad "Have Faith In Me". What a great singer! Why didn't she ever cut a full LP? 7-inch, Vinyl record
