Angelilo & HamelComplicite ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A jazz record, but one with so much going on it's impossible to pin down – strands of influences from Latin, Brazilian, and other modes – mixed with occasional vocal contributions too! The vibe is a bit like some of those really creative criss-crossings on the French scene of the 70s – maybe like a record on Saravah – and maybe that's no surprise, given that the set is French Canadian – a meeting in the studio between bassist/arranger Vic Angelillo and pianist Henri Hamel – in a lineup that features guitars, trumpet, alto, soprano sax, flute, and some nice electric piano too! Vocalists include Ranee Lee, Leo Monast, Yolanda Lisi, and Claude Leveilee – and the whole thing has a really groovy vibe. Titles include "Quand On Verra Mon Ame", "Paix", "On Ne Sait Plus", "Un Ile Perdue", "Le Gout D'Aimer", "L'Eau De L'Ennui", and "Valse D'Une Ile". (Jazz, French) LP, Vinyl record album

Les DifferentsLes Differents ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
Fantastic fuzz from a French Canadian combo of the 60s – one of the coolest garage bands we've ever heard from up north at the time, romping here with a style that's equal parts Sunset Strip and some of the hipper Parisian groups of the time! Lyrics are all in French, and the production has this nice sense of darkness that makes echo out of the organ lines, jangly guitar, and nice touches of fuzz – all flowing together with a style that sounds plenty magic all the way through, even if you can't always understand the lyrics. Some of the guys in the group were still teens at the time of recording, which you can hear in the youthful energy of the songs – and titles include "Je T'Aime", "Abandonne", "La Solitude", "Seul Sur Terre", "Je Ne Veux Plus", "Aimes Proudemment", and "Soyons Differents". Les SinnersSatan (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Disques Merite/Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A rare bit of Canadian psych from the start of the 70s – served up by a group with a sound that's all their own! Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. There's plenty of searing guitars and very offbeat French lyrics – and the record's got a very nice sense of variety from tune to tune. Titles include "Quebec Nous T'Aimons", "Groovy", "Petite Fille T'Es Down", "OK L'Chien", "Charogne", "Heavy", and "Aux Petits Oiseux" – which is a very cool psychedelic raga that rounds out the record! Return To Analog (Canada), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from this French Canadian group – a contemporary set, but one that has lots of echoes of the past! There's a vibe here that has plenty of groovy 60s modes filtered through a 90s sensibility – somewhere in the territory of Stereolab, especially given the French lyrics – but with less electronics, and more catchy guitar overall! Production is nice and watery, too – maybe like Creation Records at its best – and vocals and main guitar are handled by the lovely Rachel Leblanc – on titles that include "Fleur", "Nouvelle Vague", "L'Ete Bleu", "Si Je Pleure", "Phoneme", "Les Jours Manques", and "Carte Du Ciel".
