Eddie Barclay & OthersArrangeur, Interprete, Et Producteur 1946 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 29.99
A huge tribute to a giant force in French music at midcentury – bandleader, arranger, and producer Eddie Barclay – a man who recorded plenty of records on his own, then went on to launch the Barclay label to showcase a generation worth of fresh French talent! The first two CDs provide an overdue look at Barclay's skills as a leader – with 48 instrumentals that move between jazz and larger instrumental modes – a bit like some of the Mercury Records work of the late 50s, especially when Barclay hits some groovier styles. CD3 focuses on his work on behalf of other artists – and the 24 tracks are almost a who's who of a whole generation of French artists – with work from Henri Salvador, Django Reinhardt, Eddie Constantine, Pierre Perret, Dalida, Jean-Paul Vignon, Vince Taylor, Leo Ferre, Dalida, Danyel Gerard, Charles Aznavour, and others! As with all of the sets on this great label, the package is very comprehensive – and comes with detailed notes in both French and English. (Jazz, French) CD

A moving tribute to the late, great Serge Gainsbourg – served up in a mix of film and songs from his famous partner Jane Birkin! ✨✧ Jane BirkinOh Pardon Tu Dormais ... CD
Universal (France), 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Wonderful work from the legendary Jane Birkin – and proof that true musical legends never die! Jane's sounding every bit as tremendous as on her 70s recordings for Philips – working here with Ettiene Daho and Jean Louis Pierot on production and songwriting – in a mode that uses plenty of the spacious orchestrations and gentle grooves that always seem to make the near-whispered vocals of Birkin so great! Yet there's also a difference here – a sense of maturity and life-lived that really brings a lot to the lyrics – in a voice that still sounds surprisingly young, but conveying a heart that's certainly seen a lot of ups and downs. Titles include "Ta Sentinelle", "Ces Murs Epais", "Max", "Ghosts", "A Maree Haute", "Pas D'Accord", and "Telle Est Ma Maladie Envers Toi". CD

Jacques Brel, Mort Shuman, Elly Stone, Joe MasiellJacques Brel Is Alive & Well & Living In Paris – Original Film Soundtrack ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
The film soundtrack version of this famous 60s musical, which was based around the sounds of Belgian singer Jacques Brel. The film version shares many similarities to the broadway one – translations by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman, vocals by Shuman and Elly Stone – but the overall sound is quite different, as the versions presented here are more subtle, less campy, possibly due to the freer range of expression allowed to the actors on a film soundstage. Plus, this version also includes a few of Brel's best songs that were left out of the original show – making for a total of 26 titles that include "The Bulls", "Sons Of", "The Desperate Ones", "Amsterdam", "The Statue", "Brussels", "Funeral Tango", "Bachelors Dance", "Carousel", and "Next". If you want Brel in English, this may well be the best way to get it – as nearly all other English language versions of his work (by Scott Walker, Marc Almond, and others) came from these translations. Chene NoirOrphee 2000 ... LP
Chene Noir/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
A spiritual set from 70s France – but one that has a very different origin than most! Chene Noir come from a theatrical background, and do a wonderful job of mixing up elements – that free-spirited sense of genre-stepping that took place on the French scene after the initial inspirations of visiting American avant players in the late 60s – given a fresh sense of expression in the Saravah generation, in modes that were often overlooked at the time by the rest of the world! The music here is definitely jazz, but brings in some sense of performance too – spoken passages, some vocals – served up in a mix of saxes, vibes, organ, Fender Rhodes, and percussion – the sort of work that someone like Pierre Barouh would have liked to capture in the studio. Titles include "Le Viel Orphee", "Musique De La Nuit", "Musique Du Vieux", "La Route De La Mer", "La Chute", "La Musique D'Orphee", and "Chemin D'Ou L'On Ne Revient Pas". (Jazz, French) LP, Vinyl record album
