Bobbie GentryDelta Sweete (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 21.99
A sublime album from the great Bobbie Gentry – and maybe her strongest full-length set recorded during the classic Capitol years! The title's "sweete" is a hillbilly play on the word "suite" – and the album definitely works as an extended suite of tracks – almost a concept album, and one that mixes lots of Bobbie's own tunes with a few well-chosen covers – all set to larger arrangements that feature strings from Jimmie Haskell and horns directed by Shorty Rogers – all while Gentry leads the combo at the core! Later Capitol albums had Gentry doing a lot of covers, and maybe losing her identity a bit – but this set is more of an expansion on the mode she brought to the "Billie Joe" single – with tracks that include "Reunion", "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Penduli Pendulum", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Courtyard", "Okolona River Bottom Band", and "Refractions". 2CD version features a brand new stereo mix from the original tapes, the original mono mix of the album, and bonus tracks that include demos of "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Louisiana Man", "Refractions", "The Way I Do", and "Feelin Good" – plus an instrumental of "Okolona River Bottom Band", and an alternate take of "Mississippi Delta". ✨✧ Bobbie GentryGirl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters (Ode To Billie Joe/Delta Sweete/Local Gentry/Touch Em With Love/Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell/Fancy/Patchwork/BBC/bonus tracks) (8CD set) ... CD
Capitol (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 8CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on the original debut album here – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This huge package features everything that Bobbie ever recorded for the label – not just some great full albums, but also some rare singles, demos, and alternate takes – plus 75 unreleased tracks (!) – and then a full incredible album Live At The BBC – which features 26 tracks of Gentry really knocking it out of the park. The BBC material has these really dark, brooding orchestrations – almost like Bobbie's getting some Scott Walker late 60s backings – and the whole box set might be worth it alone for that double-length album! The package is a very cool 10" slipcover – with a huge booklet of notes, postcards, lyric inserts, and more – 177 tracks in all, with albums that include Ode To Billie Joe, The Delta Sweete, Local Gentry, Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Touch Em With Love, Fancy, Patchwork, and Live At The BBC. ✨✧ VariousWhy The Mountains Are Black – Primeval Greek Village Music 1907 to 1960 ... CD
Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy 2CDs ... $15.99 16.98
It's hard to imagine Greece in the 20th century being described as primeval, but there's definitely a timeless vibe to the music on this collection – all pulled from vintage 78rpm discs that are filled with earthy percussion, exotic reed lines, and some especially nice stringed instrumentation! Most numbers seem to be instrumental, and although the date range in the title is large, the bulk of the recordings here are from the late 20s and early 30s – prime material for the expansion of the 78 market into more regional territories – of the sort that have been documented on similar collections by the Honest Jons or Dust To Digital labels. This collection is an initial foray by the Third Man group, in collaboration with collector Christopher King – who provided all the discs used in the collection – and despite the age and the format, there's a strong sense of clarity throughout – possibly because most of the material was recorded in studios rather than in the field. The set comes with a nice set of notes, a cover illustration by Robert Crumb, and 28 tracks that include "Sousta Rethymniotiki" by G Canteris and G Gombakis, "Ousak Tsiftelli" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Selfos" by Demetrios Jalkias", "Golfo" (Anonymous), "Syrtos Politikos" by Kyr Keravnos, "Kritiki Sousta" by A Karavitas & G Marianos, "Tzarama" by Nikos Karakostas and M Lakkergis, "Platanos" by Athanasios Lavidas, "Mirologi-Epirotiko Makedoniko" by Elias Karathimos, and "Kotta Mou" by Antonios Sakelarou. (Global Grooves, Folk/Country) CD
