Bobbie GentryOde To Billie Joe (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol/Elemental (Spain), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 30.99
A key late 60s country crossover set, but one that also inspired a fair bit of funk as well! The title cut's a well-known gem – one that's been covered instrumentally in some break-heavy versions, but which sounds even more amazing here in Bobbie's original version – one of the moodiest pop tunes we've ever heard, with lyrics, and a way of presenting them, that still leaves us breathless all these many years later. There's also some other funky bits here too – Gentry's raspy "Mississippi Delta" – an original number that almost seems to unseat Tina Turner for down-home soul – and the groovy "Sunday Best", "Niki Hoeky", "Papa Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You", and "Chickasaw Country Child", all numbers that echo the same lilting acoustic guitar grooves of "Billie Joe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 1000 – on heavyweight vinyl!)

✨✧ Bobbie GentryDelta Sweete (2LP 180 gram deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Capitol, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A sublime album from the great Bobbie Gentry – and maybe her strongest full-length set recorded during the classic Capitol years! The title's "sweete" is a hillbilly play on the word "suite" – and the album definitely works as an extended suite of tracks – almost a concept album, and one that mixes lots of Bobbie's own tunes with a few well-chosen covers – all set to larger arrangements that feature strings from Jimmie Haskell and horns directed by Shorty Rogers – all while Gentry leads the combo at the core! Later Capitol albums had Gentry doing a lot of covers, and maybe losing her identity a bit – but this set is more of an expansion on the mode she brought to the "Billie Joe" single – with tracks that include "Reunion", "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Penduli Pendulum", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Courtyard", "Okolona River Bottom Band", and "Refractions". 2LP version features a brand new stereo mix from the original tapes – plus bonus tracks that include demos of "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Louisiana Man", "Refractions", "The Way I Do", and "Feelin Good" – plus an instrumental of "Okolona River Bottom Band", and an alternate take of "Mississippi Delta". ✨✧ Bobbie GentryLive At The BBC ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from the great Bobbie Gentry – material recorded at the same time as her big Captiol Records hits in the US, but with a different vibe overall! Bobbie's singing here on a BBC show, one that ran for a number of episodes – and her backings are handled by the great John Cameron (of Donovan and sound library fame) – who shades things in with all these cool little touches that really unlock the darkness in her tunes! The music is fantastic – almost with echoes of Scott Walker at times – and the kind of thing that will make you realize that Gentry was a lot deeper than you might have guessed.
