Tommy CollinsThis Is Tommy Collins/Words & Music Country Style ... CD
Capitol/Rural Routes, Mid 50s. Used ... $4.99
Two full albums from the many who was an important influence on California country giants Merle Haggard and Buck Owens! The first album is pure genius from the young Tommy Collins – an early figure on the Bakersfield scene, and an artist who almost single-handedly shaped the sound of the west coast scene with his Capitol Records material included here! Collins had a wonderful way of updating older hillbilly modes – traces of Texas and Arkansas, moved over to postwar Cali – where things got tightened up, became a bit more confident, and were given a razor-sharp sound by the excellent Capitol production. Every tune here is a classic – and many have a sense of double-entendre that rivals the hippest R&B work of the period, but with a very different sound overall – on titles that include "You Better Not Do That", "How Do I Say Goodbye", "It Tickles", "You Gotta Have A License", "Smooth Sailin", and "Whatcha Gonna Do Now". Words & Music Country Style features the wit, wisdom, and wild twang of the great Tommy Collins – brought together in a killer collection of early work for Capitol! The music here is the ultimate peak of the hillbilly generation – not the codified country of the Nashville scene to come, but much more rough-edged and wooley – with more than a few elements that could influence the sound of rock and roll as well! Titles include "The Feet Of The Traveler", "How Do I Say Goodbye", "Think It Over Boys", "Are You Ready To Go", and "All Of The Monkeys Ain't In The Zoo". CD

✨✧ Tim BuckleyDream Letter – Live In London 1968 ... CD
Enigma Retro, 1968. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A fantastic live outing from the legendary Tim Buckley – one that not only includes Tim singing unusual versions of some of his album tracks from the late 60s, but which also includes a number of songs that he never recorded elsewhere! Plus, the quartet on the date also features Dave Friedman on vibes – bringing in that wonderful blend of vibes and acoustic guitar that made Buckley's early work so great, and which really gave his songs such a different spirit than so many of his contemporaries! Tim also plays and sings alone on three of the album's tracks – further intensifying the musical quality of the set – a record that is completely essential, even if you own most of Buckley's classics already. Titles include "The Troubadour", "I've Been Out Walking", "Hallucinations", "Dolphins", "Who Do You Love", "The Earth Is Broken", "Carnival Song/Hi Lili Hi Lo", "Pleasant Street", "The Earth Is Broken", "Wayfaring Stranger", Happy Time", and "Once I Was". ✨✧ Tim BuckleyLook At The Fool ... LP
DiscReet, 1973. Near Mint- ... $16.99
The last album that Tim Buckley ever gave the world – and a great leaping-off point for speculation about what he might have done, had he not left the planet too soon! Tim's actually beginning to explore a bit of funk in his music here – still using that amazing voice with all of its range from the early Elektra years – but often set to backings that feature heavy drums from Earl Palmer, tight bass from Chuck Rainey, and keyboards from Mike Melvoin – all cats who can be tight, but never slick – and whose groove is more than loose enough to let Buckley direct the whole proceedings. Given that Tim has an occasional raw rasp, and a very offbeat way with his lyrics, the mix of elements is actually not that far from the funk of Betty Davis on her first two albums – with a similar shrug towards any easy genre categorizations. Titles include "Freeway Blues", "Look At The Fool", "Tijuana Moon", "Mexicali Voodoo", "Down In The Street", "Wanda Lou", and "Bring It On Up". (Rock, Folk/Country) LP, Vinyl record album
(Promo. Cover has light wear and a promo sticker.)

Sandy BullFantasias For Guitar & Banjo ... LP
Vanguard/Alternative Fox (UK), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Mindblowing minimalism from the legendary Sandy Bull – an artist who might have had acoustic roots in folk music, but who was instantly turning his music into something else – drawing on modal styles of Eastern music, European generations of expression on guitar, jazz-based improvisation – and maybe even prefiguring work to come from composers like Terry Riley and La Monte Young! This album's one of Bull's first, and it's pure genius right from the start – with a side-long performance on the incredible "Blend", which features slight drums from jazz musician Billy Higgins – which Sandy extrapolates these long passages on acoustic guitar. Side two features the fantastic "Carmina Burana Fantasy" on banjo – a kind of trans-historical performance that's right up there with John Fahey's best of the decade – alongside equally mindblowing "Non Nobis Domine" and "Little Maggie" – and the closing electric guitar genius of "Gospel Tune". Johnny CashMan Comes Around – American IV ... CD
American, 2002. Used CD & DVD ... $4.99
Cash's fourth volume of stark, sparely-arranged studio recordings for producer/set list provider Rick Rubin. As Johnny gets on in the years his always haunting voice, like Bob Dylan's, is weighted by age, but the heavily-breathed delivery only adds to the ghostly quality of the increasingly dark tunes. With this fourth set in the series we're far past being surprised by the choices of material – this time Cash conjures up spiritual takes on Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus", Trent Reznor's "Hurt", Lennon/McCartney's "In My Life", and more traditional material like Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and the eternally underrated Marty Robbins' "Big Iron". You can't forget that Cash's pen is still pretty sharp, too, as the really spooky imagery in the title track and others testify. The accompaniment includes the great Randy Scruggs, Beck/Tom Waits guitarist Smokey Hormel, Marty Stuart, Glen Campell, and backing vocals by Nick Cave and Fiona Apple. Another great one from the greatest! CD
(Includes bonus DVD with music video for "Hurt".)

Lynn CastleRose Colored Corner ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Never-heard sounds from Lynn Castle – a singer who was maybe more famous in 60s LA for her work as a hair stylist – even though she spent her free time turning out really beautiful songs like these! Castle only ever issued one 45 on Lee Hazlewood's label – but the work here is mostly from earlier demos she cut with legendary producer Jack Nitzsche – who wisely leaves Lynn to mostly stand out in the lead on vocals and guitar – which makes for music that's surprisingly dark-tinged overall, and quite different than you might expect from her sexy look on the cover! The vocals are often quite moody – almost in Nico territory, but more tuneful overall – and the songs are incredibly haunting, maybe along the lines of some of the Leonard Cohen material from the early days. Titles include "The Stranger", "The Puppet", "The Forest", "New York", "I'm Getting Tired", "She Thinks She Feels", "Rose Colored Corner", and "Lonesome Lookout". The set also includes both sides of Castle's only single on LHI – produced by Hazlewood, backed by Last Friday's Fire – and titled "The Lady Barber" and "Rose Colored Corner". (Rock, Folk/Country) CD
