Aloe BlaccGood Things ... CD
Stones Throw, 2010. Used ... $4.99
Cinematic soul rooted in the rawer organ, drums and horns vibes that resonated deeply in records from north to south in the 70s – done with a lean, tight and head nodding groove no doubt informed by Aloe Blacc's own roots in hip hop – on his best album yet and one of best raw soul styled albums ever to come from our friends at Stones Throw! Good Things is a giant leap ahead of Shine Through, Aloe's previous full length on the label. We loved that record for its gritty, unique approach to funky soul, but, Good Things reaches for the heights of Aloe's heroes from Donny Hathaway to Marvin Gaye – and comes closer than we could have imagined! It's produced by the Truth & Soul team, with a timeless funk & soul vibe comparable to their work with the great Lee Fields. We have a feeling we'll still be listening to this album 10-15-20 years from now. Essential! Titles include the underground breakout "I Need A Dollar", an incredible cover of The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" (we must have dropped the needle on that 50 times in the first couple days we had it), "Green Lights", "Miss Fortune", "Good Things", "Loving You Is Killing Me", "Mama Hold My Hand", "Hey Brother" and more. Stones Throw, 2007. Near Mint- ... $13.99
The long awaited sides C & D in Madlib's incredible blend of Bombay soundtrack-styled funk, blunted Eastern beats, and all round stunning Middle Eastern accented hip hop instros! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Amazing! "Get It Right", "More Rice", "Indian Bells", "Club Scene", "Duel", "Organ Stroll", "In The Cave", "Malfunction", "Victory", "Smoke Circle", "Raw Ground Wire", "New Bombay", "Shah Sound", "Another Getaway", and more. ✨✧ BumpsBumps ... CD
Stones Throw, 2007. Used ... $1.99
Breaks, beats and funky drums from Bumps – aka Dan Bitney, John Herndon and John McEntire of Tortoise – a mightily thumping set that sounds very little like their much vaunted flagship operation – serving up raw, funky beatcraft all the way through! Tortoise has always worked with bottom heavy grooving elements, beyond the experimentalism, and have never really gotten enough credit for that aspect of their sound. Bumps really lets them roll with it! Nothing but beats here – drawing from a diverse wellspring of funk, avant garde jazz and dubby influences! Titles include "A Safe Balm, "Biotic Discussion", "As Bond Did", "Crass Jenny", "Deal, Tree", "Hello, Leo", "Can You See", "A Dumb Month", "Exponent Memoir", "Nashira", "Fun Injury", "Intermission Pt 1", "Intermission Pt 2", "Don't Cry, My Son", "Swingland Hit" and more. VariousPeanut Butter Wolf – Jukebox 45s ... CD
Stones Throw, 2002. Used ... $7.99
If our jukebox was like this, we'd be rich! The compilation's a much-needed overview of the limited edition 45s issued by the Stones Throw label – a genre-busting blend of hip hop, deep funk, and turntable work – always exciting, and with a style that's unlike anything else we can think of! The package really offers a great sampling of the work on these hard-to-find singles – 22 ultra-hip titles that are as appealing to any fan of classic funk as they are a fan of underground hip hop. Titles include "Getcho Soul Togetha (part 2)" by Breakestra, "Rocket Ship" by Stark Reality, "Harlem River Drive Interlude" and "I Am Singing" by Yesterday's New Quintet, "My 2600" by Captain Funkaho, "Breaks Of Meditate" and "Chops & Thangs" by Beat Conductor, "Things Could Be Better" by Ernie & The Top Notes, "On Point" by Lootpack, "Poppin Popcorn" by The Highlighters, "Devotion 92" by Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf, "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls, "Color" by LA Carnival, "Enter Ralph Wiggum" by A Trak, and "Place Your Bet" by Medaphor. ✨✧ Aloe BlaccShine Through ... CD
Stones Throw, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A batch of eclectic postmodern soul that's as original and instantly gratifying as anything we've heard on Stones Throw! Aloe Blacc more than lives up to the expectations we had for him after hearing his first couple of Stones Throw singles. His previous work in the adventurous hip hop outfit Emanon really only hints at his solo work – and it's even more bold in its idiosyncratic approach to an appealing groove! The almost entirely self-produced Shine Through (Oh No and Madlib produce one track each) is rife with an electronic sheen, touching on a bubbling psychedelic soul vibe we've never really heard before. A couple of tracks have guitar, bass, and keys that bring a more organic, but still kind of otherworldly groove – even touching on a cosmic Latin vibe on a couple of tunes! Tracks include "Whole World", a totally re-imagined take on Sam Cooke's "Long Time Coming" (produced by Oh No), "Are You Ready", "Busking", "Bailar", "Nascimento", "Dance For Life", "Patria Mia", "Shine Through", "Caged Birdsong", "Arrive", "Want Me", "One Inna" (produced by Madlib) and "I'm Beautiful". ✨✧ Tony CookBack To Reality ... CD
Stones Throw, Mid 80s/2011. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The unreleased album from Tony Cook – recorded between 1982 and 1986 – newly remixed by Peanut Butter Wolf and given a ceremonial release by Stones Throw! Like the couple of Cook singles from the era we were previously hip to, it's a nice mix of cosmic soul and homespun charm – lots of groovy synth and period programmed beats, heavy bass grooves and searing soul guitar when the groove calls for it. Lean boogie funk and soul with guests including Dam-Funk, Vernon Cheely, Tavell, Vanessa Jean and The Party People. Includes "Get To The Point" feat Vernon Cheely, "Later For Dancing (Stay The Night)", feat Tavell, "Video Rock" feat Tavell, "What's On Your Mind" feat Dam-Funk, "The Rap" feat The Kids,On The Floor (Rock-It)" feat The Party Kids, "Mighty Fine" feat Vanessa Jean and more. ✨✧ Yesterdays New Quintet/Breakestra/Mr. DibbsSuite For Weldon ... 12-inch
Stones Throw, 2003. Very Good+ (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful tribute to the genius of the late Weldon Irvine – one of the greatest keyboard players in jazz funk history, and a masterfully cosmic talent who's touched our life for years! Weldon tragically took his own life in 2002, stunning any of us who'd met him, and who'd been touched by his music over the years. The folks at Stones Throw records were as stunned as the rest of us, but they actually managed to do something to express their loss – and hustled some of their best artists in the studio to record this brilliant tribute to Weldon's genius. The set's only an EP – sadly – but every track is a jazz funk gem, of the sort that would really make Weldon smile in that wry little way he had. Yesterday's New Quintet deliver a superb 10 minute "Suite For Weldon Irvine" – filled with great Fender Rhodes licks, and featuring snips from some of his greatest tunes. Breakestra go wild on a nice electric cover of Weldon's classic "Sister Sanctified" – famously recorded by Stanley Turrentine for CTI, sampled later by BDP, and re-done beautifully by the group! Mr Dibbs cuts it up a bit on "Divine Spirit", a mix of older parts of Weldon's records – and Weldon himself makes an appearance on the sweet keyboard funky "Outro", recorded in Nashville in 1999. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hazy beatcraft steeped in Indian soundtrack style funk, strings and percussion from the indefatigable Madlib – Volume 3 in the increasingly adventurous and conceptual outings of the Beat Konducta! ✨✧ Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 1 & 2 – Movie Scenes/Movie Scenes, The Sequel ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
The epic CD compilation of the ever prolific, ever satisfying Madlib's first 2 LPs as Beat Konducta – a instrumental song suite of beats for films that do not exist anywhere but the fevered mind of the genius beatcrafter! 'Lib's production work has always had a bit of a filmic groove, and this set collects and assembles the most cinematic of said beats into an (unsurprisingly) incredible whole. The soundscapes really kind of run the gamut of his hip hop styles – always soulful, and always funky, whether he's rocking a stone funk or an electro-modeled groove. Honestly, how much longer is it going to take for the mainstream to finally catch up with this genius!?! Collects tracks from the 2 separate volumes of vinyl: "The Comeback (Madlib)", "The Payback (Gotta)", "Face The Sun (Africa)", "Stax (Strings)", "Left On Silverlake (Ride)", "Offbeat (Grooves)", "Pyramids (Change)", "Eternal Broadcaster (Authentic)", "The Rock (Humps)", "Filthy (Untouched)", "Money Hugger (Gold Diggin'", "Black Mozart (Opus II)", "Snake Charmer (Heads Up)", "African Walk (Zamunda)", "The Forest (Greens)", "Outerlimit (Space Ho)" and more! ✨✧ Connie Price & The KeystonesWildflowers (expanded edition) ... CD
Now Again, 2004. Used ... $6.99
A damn funky little album – and one of the best Stones Throw albums of the past 20 years! Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates – even some of the offbeat psych and rock that the label has reissued from around the globe! There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their work – taking the core instrumentation of funky drums, choppy guitars, smoking keyboards, and soulful sax – and pushing it out with a Stark Reality-ish vibe that really makes the group stand out from the rest of the deep funk underground! The album's a brilliant debut that we'll be digging for years – and it also feature appearances by Malcolm Catto, and members of Funk Inc, Poets Of Rhythm, and The LA Carnival! Titles include "Sticks & Stones", "Sucker Punch", "The Buzzard", "Double Dutch", "Wild Flowers", "Tall Dry Grass", "Fuzz & Them", and "The Shadows Of Leaves". Expanded version features 9 more bonus tracks – including "Raga Doll", "Afro Som", "Hurricane Malcolm", "Hello I'm Inside Out", "Sticks Dub", and "Attack Of The Killer Penguins". CD

✨✧ Eric Boss (Myron & E)Modern Love (with bonus download) ... LP
Mocambo (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The solo debut of Eric Boss – a singer you might know as part of the duo of Myron & E – who gave us some great harmony soul records on Stones Throw and Timmion! Here, Eric is a much straighter soul singer overall – working with a sharp funky punch in the backings, with plenty of Mighty Mocambo help that you'd guess from the record's placement on their label! Tunes move nicely between 60s and 70s funky soul modes, but often with a more complex, contemporary vibe on the rhythms – and although the set features guest work from Gizelle Smith and Gift Of Gab, Eric hardly needs any help to make a strong statement on his own. Titles include "Bad Luck", "Closer To The Spirit", "I Wanna Ride", "Spiders", "Get Next To You", "Forward", "Merry Jane", and "Your Life Is Up To You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download with bonus instrumentals!)
