✨✧ SpeedometerFour Flights Up ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four flights up, and still plenty darn funky – thanks to top-shelf work from one of the UK's funkiest combos! Speedometer get better and better with each new record – and this time around, they've risen to the upper level of grooving in the deep funk underground – sitting nicely next to the best from the Daptone, Soul Fire, and Tru Thoughts camp with an approach that's heavy on the drums, filled with funky guitars, and topped with plenty of horns! Vocals are great too – thanks to guest appearances from Ria Currie and Miami soul legend Robert Moore – both of whom really flesh out the tunes wonderfully with their soulful styles. Core instrumentation is as tight as it can be, and it looks like the move to the Freestyle label has really been a great one for the group! Titles include "Four Flights Up", "Meter's Running", "No Man Worries", "Same Old Thing", "Make It Alright", "Am I Your Woman", "Chicken Run", "This Ain't Movin", "Safari Of Soul", "Do Right Man", and "The Real Me". ✨✧ SpeedometerOur Kind Of Movement ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Speedometer have been giving us great funky music for many many years – yet this album may well have the group hitting a whole new level in sound – able to hold on to all the gritty elements of their early days, while also expanding in ways that touch onto Afro Funk, psychedelic funk, and cinematic funky modes too! The core instrumentation is great – with a lineup that's maybe bigger than at the start, but which also adapts to some well-placed shifts in style – on tunes that are half instrumental, and half vocal – the latter of which feature contributions from Vanessa Jamie, Najwa Ezzaher Perso, and James Jr. Titles include "We Gave Up Too Soon", "Abuja Sunrise", "Kashmir", "Edge Of Fear", "Mo Crunch", "Funky Amigo", "Mind Escape", "Look No Further", and "Time To Slow It Down". SpeedometerSoul Groovin' ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... $9.99
Heavy funk from Speedometer – one of the coolest combos cooking in the contemporary deep funk underground! The album offers a great chance to hear the group live – playing with a sound that's every bit as sharp as on their studio records, with an edge that's even grittier – proof that these guys have plenty going on in the instrumental department, as they deliver a full-on assault filled with heavy drums, burning Hammond, choppy guitar, and lots of great work on horns! Ria Currie joins the group for some very soulful lead vocals on a few tracks – and titles include "At The Speakeasy", "Soul Grooving", "Kool & The Gang/Let The Music Take Your Mind", "Work It Out", "No Man Worries", "Am I Your Woman", "Kool To Be Uncool", and "Answer to Mother Popcorn". ✨✧ Billy Wooten & SpeedometerLive At The Jazz Cafe ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer set of funky jazz from veteran vibes man Billy Wooten – backed by mod funk masters Speedometer – live at the London's Jazz Cafe! The hour + set was captured back in 2003, and the players are in fantastic form, sounding like they've worked together for years. They totally roll with a funky vibe, too, not so much on the gritty side of the sound, but with a deft, controlled energy that's phenomenal. Wooten's vibes out from of guitar, sax trumpet, flute, keys, drums and percussion of the mighty Speedometer. We wish we were there! Titles include groovy takes "Open Up JB (Paarty)", plus "Sookie Sookie", "In The Rain", "In The Middle", "Steve's Song", plus Wooten's "Chicango (Chicago Land)", "Monkey Hips & Rice" and more. ✨✧ VariousMocambo Funk 45s – A Selection Of Today's Rarest Vinyl Singles ... CD
Mocambo (Germany), 2007. Used ... $8.99
Contemporary funk, but with a groove deep enough to warrant the "rare" promised in the title – as most of these numbers would stand strongly next to the best funky 45s from the late 60s and early 70s! The production is great throughout – very hard-edged, and with a back-to-basics feel that really focuses on the best elements of the tunes – the snapping drums, funky basslines, blasting horn parts, and other great instrumental bits that make these tracks great. And while we'd always paid attention to the Mocambo label, this set clearly shows that they've got a lot more to offer than we'd ever realized – a completely solid body of work that's presented wonderfully in this super-tight CD! 18 tracks in all – including "Listen Up" by Glover Crockett & Glover, "Free Vibes (parts 1 & 2)" by Gizelle Smith & The Mocambo Allstars, "The Getaway" by Delta Rhythm Section, "Hustle The Mustle" by Speedometer, "Chicano Chaser" by Ian Langley, "Highway Patrol" by James Taylor Quartet, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, "The Prophet" by Glover Crockett & Glover, and "Funkin Fever" by Delta Rhythm Section.
