✨✧ Bastards Of SoulSpinnin (with bonus download) ... LP
Eastwood Music Group, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really special sort of record from the Bastards Of Soul – a Texas group, but one who work in this great mix of deep soul and slight southern rock touches – at a level that almost makes this album feel like some lost nugget from the vaults of Capricorn Records! Vocals are by male singer Chadwick Murray – not the lovely lady on the cover – and there's a cool crossover vibe here that takes us back to work by 70s genius talents like Eddie Hinton or Dan Penn, with guitar lines that are strong, but balanced by these warmer organ currents that really underscore the more soulful elements in the music – as do the laidback rhythms on the tunes. Titles include "I've Got The Key", "Funky Ham & Eggs", "Back To The City", "Spinning Out Of Control", "The Way It Should Be", "The Waiting Time", and "Your Love Has Turned My Heart To Bitterness". HeliocentricsInfinity Of Now ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
A fantastic mix of heady sounds and heavy funk from The Heliocentrics – and a record that continues the vibe of their previous set – in which the team of Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson were joined by the lovely vocals of Barbora Patkova! Patkova's presence is just what the group needs to really ground their sound – a female singer up front, but one who's as equally comfortable with distortion, fuzz, and echoey spaces as the two instrumentalists – a trio who continue that unique tradition of psychedelic funk that we first loved in Catto's early work on Mo Wax! Titles include "99% Revolution", "Hanging By A Thread", "Nonsense (part 1)", "Light In The Dark", "People Wake Up", "Burning Wooden Ship", and "Elephant Walk". CD
Also available Infinity Of Now ... LP 19.99

✨✧ New MastersoundsShake It (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Color Red, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The New Mastersounds shake it strongly here – still with all the great core energy of their classic quartet lineup – but further expanded with excellent lead vocals from Lamar Williams, plus a bit of tenor and trumpet too! The group have always been funky, but they've got a nicely different focus here when working with a singer – maybe more snapping and sock-soul, yet still driven strongly by the excellent guitar solos of Eddie Roberts too – not to mention Joe Tatton on keyboard, Pete Shand on bass, and Simon Allen on drums! Titles include "Life Life Free", "Lovely Daze", "Kings & Queens", "Love They Deserve", "Shake It", "Let's Go Back", and "Too Late To Worry". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SoothsayersOne More Reason ... CD
Soothsayers/Red Earth (UK), 2009. Used ... $6.99
Brixton's Soothsayers self described style of "tangled roots" has always been an appealing blend of Afro-inspired funk, soul, jazz and rhythms – and they've added another strand this time out, with some reverent reggae and dub sounds! One More Reason could have gone wrong in a number of ways, but the group manages to bring the Caribbean grooves into their already rich blend of influences very well – and the guests list is quite impressive, to boot – with Johnny Clarke, Linval Thompson and others – plus a Mad Professor remix. Somehow, they don't undermine the the sounds we've come to appreciate from their past records, with Fela influences and lovely group harmonies out front. Nice stuff! Titles include "Music", "We Better Learn", "Slown Down", "Tears Of Sorrow" with Michael Prophet, "Irie" with Mellow Baku & Michie One, "Your Love" with Johnny Clarke, "History" with Linval Thomson, "Tears In Dub" and more. Jo StanceJo Stance – The Stance Brothers Introduces A Magnificent New Talent ... CD
Ricky Tick (Finland), 2010. Used ... $11.99
A whole new groove for The Stance Brothers – every bit as funky as before, but with an added soul component as well! The lovely lady on the front cover is Johanna Forsti – aka Jo Stance – a vocalist with a sound that's got plenty of 60s soul modes overall – warm and smooth one minute, hard and raspy the next – giving the whole album the feel of a batch of lost singles from the late 60s US – particularly the more mod versions of soul that might have played big on the UK scene! All the best Stance grooves are firmly in place – augmented by trumpet from Jukka Eskola and saxes from Timo Lassy – and the shift to soul is a wonderful expansion in sound for the Ricky Tick label, who handle this mode as well as they do classic jazz. Titles include "Changes", "Sticky", "I'll Find You", "Until Tomorrow", "Treated", "Shout", "Stand Tall", "Me & You", and "Tell Me/Girls". (New Grooves, Deep Funk) CD
