Paolo Achenza 4Branches ... CD
A.MA (Italy), 2017. Used ... $6.99
It's been many years since we last heard from Paolo Achenza – the Italian keyboardist who was one of the first to bring the Fender Rhodes back in the early 90s – and an important early force on the Italian label Schema Records! It's been nearly 20 years since Paolo's last for Schema – but in that time, he's clearly grown a lot as an artist – and although still very much in a funky jazz vein, also opens his ears to a wider range of influences – as you'll hear in this really well-crafted set! Achenza's Rhodes is certainly in the lead, but the record also has contributions from many others too – including singers Richard Sinclair and Nicaleo – who each work on a track – as well as Vito Scavo on trombone, Donny Balice on trumpet, Alberto Parmegiani on guitar, and Franceso Walsh on sitar – artists who each add in different shadings to Paolo's core quartet of bass, drums, and percussion. Achenza was one of the first to really take the Italian electric sound of the 70s forward – and all these many years later, he's still one of the best. Titles include "Solar Whip", "Branches", "Achenzology", "In The Name Of What", "Kinky Habits", "One For Little P", and "Settimo Continente". (Jazz, Deep Funk) CD

BrainstoryBuck (clear with yellow & purple splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
A funky trio with a really unique sort of vibe – vocals that are somewhere in the sweet soul territory of the early 70s, set to spacious instrumentation that's got some nicely trippy touches! The core lineup features guitar, bass, and drums next to the harmonized vocals of Kevin and Tony Martin – but Leon "El" Michels produced the set, and also adds in a bit of keyboards – and the whole record really benefits from the open-ended sound he can bring to an affair of this nature! Things are never overdone, and these guys never try to sound too forcedly soulful – really finding the best qualities in their vocals, and reminding us that sometimes the right fit is the most important thing of all. Titles include "Beautyful Beauti", "Mnemophobia", "Sorry", "Reclaim", "Dead End", and "Breathe". LP, Vinyl record album
(On clear with translucent purple & yellow splatter vinyl pressing.)

✨✧ Express RisingExpress Rising (2nd album) ... CD
Numero, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A warm batch of instrumental beats and atmospherics from Express Rising – and a much-anticipated second project from funk archivist Dante Carfagna! Dante's a name you probably know best from his work writing liner notes or Wax Poetics – and helping out in countless important compilations over the years – but a decade ago, Dante dropped his first mysterious project under the Express Rising name – and finally returns here with a second album! The sound is even more enticing this time around – still drawing a bit from the world of DJ Shadow – a frequent Carfagna collaborator on archive projects – but the sound is also surprisingly warm and lyrical too – bits of beats, layers of older sounds, and these spare keyboard bits all served up together in a style that's really unique – and which avoids any of the cliches of both the downtempo world, and the instrumental hip hop scene The approach is often quite poetic, yet still soulful as well – and the whole thing's got a laidback vibe that's neither sleepy nor muddled – a really sort of special space between the grooves. Titles include "Horse Opera", "Dark Early", "Answering Echo So Near", "Winter The Heart", "A Treasure Smile", "Rooms Between Us", and "Memorabilia". CD

✨✧ Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsSoul Time ... CD
Daptone, 2011. Used ... $7.99
Damn damn damn – maybe the funkiest album ever from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings! The group have always been great, but there's something here that goes even farther than usual – an especially funky snap on the drums at the bottom, even on more laidback tunes – and a stone classic approach to funky soul, one that's definitely been honed to a "T" through their important work on the road during the previous few years! And Sharon Jones is great – with vocals that are way deeper and much longer-lasting than any rehab outpatient wannabe – sending home these tunes with a quality that may well pass most of her classic female soul inspirations from back in the day. And even though the set brings together some older singles and other odd bits, it's got a rock-solid punch that makes it a very unified album throughout! Titles include "Settling In", "I'm Not Gonna Cry", "When I Come Home", "Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects", "New Shoes", "Without A Trace", and "Inspiration Information". CD
(Includes slipcase.)
