✨✧ Centre El MuusaMoonlight Horses/Catching Stars ... 7-inch
Funk Night, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A slow-building monster – nice bass that rumbles around in a cool wavy pattern, topped with this gently cascading electric piano line that builds in a really cool way, and tangled with these echoey guitar lines – as the whole thing builds and rises, ebbs then flows! "Catching Stars" has a similar slow funk vibe, but more break in the drums this time around – peppered by great Fender Rhodes – and production on both tracks has almost a Johnny Harris sort of vibe! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk) 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ El Michels AffairAbominable EP (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Crown, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A short set of work from El Michels Affair – but as with most of their records, a set that delivers a heck of a lot more than you'd get from other groups in their scene! If the cover looks a bit familiar, it's because the cuts here were recorded during the sessions for the Yeti Season album, but didn't get issued at the time – but they've got a weirder, wilder vibe than that record too – almost as if the already-trippy funk of El Michels were run through a special filter to make things sound even more exotic, yet all without ever losing the groove! Titles include "Poison Song", "Progress", "Nasir", "Messy Grass", "Cham Cham", "Uncut Gem", "Smoked", and "Running Hot". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Michels AffairAdult Themes ... LP
Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". ✨✧ El Michels AffairYeti Season ... LP
Big Crown, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A new and amazing chapter in the always-evolving sound of this wonderful funk ensemble – a set that holds onto all the unusual elements of previous records, but also brings in some beautiful vocals from singer Piya Malik on a number of tracks! Malik really fleshes out the sound on the numbers she handles – and the overall style is very hard to pin down – a globe's worth of influences, as El Michels blend together post-Wu Tang, post-Ethiopiques, post-Arabesk modes – yet all infused with a classic sense of funk that's not only very faithful to the 70s, but also has a cinematic sense of majesty! The blend is great – and Piya really helps open up the sound on the album's vocal tracks – served up in a mix of titles that include "Dhuaan", "Lesson Learned", "Murkit Gem", "Fazed Out", "Ala Vida", "Unathi", "Last Blast", "Zaharila", and "Silver Lining". ✨✧ El Michels Affair & Liam BaileyEkundayo Inversions ... LP
Big Crown, 2021. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really new setting for the vocals of singer Liam Bailey – and one that's a bit different for El Michels Affair! The group here are still very funky, and filled with all the fantastic sonic touches that we've always loved from leader Leon Michels – but the setting is more in a reggae mode, with lots of dubby elements at the bottom that are balanced out by soulful falsetto vocals from Liam – sometimes in a way that's heavily processed, sometimes a bit more straight up in the mix! As always with El Michels, the whole thing is like hearing the sounds of the past, but refracted with a unique contemporary vision – topped off here with guest work from Lee Scratch Perry and Black Thought too. Titles include "Conquer & Divide", "Ugly Truths", "Faded", "Lucky Man", "I Love NY", "Superstar", "Angel Face", "Walk With Me", "King", and "No One Else". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ El Michels Affair featuring Piya MalikUnathi/Zaharila ... 7-inch
Big Crown, 2018. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit unusual for a single by El Michels Affair, and the music is too – especially given that group here work with singer Piya Malik – whose entrancing vocals really bring a new sound to their groove! "Unathi" has some elements that are in the familiar El Michel's mode – that swirling exotic take on funk – but the vocals really transform the tune, and give it all sorts of different points of energy in a really great way. "Zaharila" is a bit mellower and mooder – but still has the same wonderful sort of east-meets-west approach! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk) 7-inch, Vinyl record

El Michels Affair & Black ThoughtGlorious Game ... LP
Big Crown, 2023. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Leon Michels has given us plenty of hip hop-inspired funk over the years, but this might be his first real hip hop project overall – a stunning set that mixes the live instrumentation of El Michels Affair with rhymes from Black Thought of The Roots – all at a level that might well set a new standard for both styles of music! The grooves are great – that subtle sense of drama that Michels always brings to the music – informed by old school action scores, but with the lean energy of a funky 45 – and although Black Thought has had live backing before, the El Michels approach here really seems to unlock something different in his vocals – maybe more power and drama than we might have guessed. Titles include "I'm Still Somehow", "Miracle", "Glorious Game", "That Girl", "The Weather", "I Would Never", "Grateful", and "Hollow Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Kevin Fingier CollectiveEl Sonido De Fingier Records ... CD
Fingier/Acid Jazz (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A really cool collection of cuts that were originally issued as 7" singles in recent years, but which work perfectly together here as a full length set that introduces the world to the deeply funky talents of Kevin Finigier! Kevin hails from Argentina, but has a deep love of American soul and funk, particularly the 60s variant that was big in the UK mod scene – and here, he serves up some wicked grooves that may well be some of the best contemporary work in this mode we've heard for years! The production is nice and gritty – really back at the level of the indie funky 45 scene from back in the day – and the set mixes instrumental numbers that have a wicked sharp explosion of sounds with some heavy vocal tracks that are equally nice. The Kevin Fingier Collective deliver the cuts "Addis Ababa", "Sunglasses After Dark", "El Basement", "Latin Dynamite", and "Cocktail De Medianoche" – and other tracks include "I Love Without A Love" by Jo Ann Hamilton, "Why Don't You Go Home" by Diane Ward, "Um Brilho Novo" by Josi Dias, "Kairo Bancou Moulu" by Abdoulaye Badiane, and "Don't Wanna Cry No More" by Gerri Granger. ✨✧ KhruangbinCon Todo El Mundo ... CD
Dead Oceans, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky combo, but one with a real difference – as they seem to find whole new corners of the globe in which to work their magic – almost an imagined space of cultural criss-crossing, all set to some mighty funky bass and drums! The core element here is the guitar – which echoes exotic modes that seem to move from Mexican folk, to contemporary Tuareg sounds, and even a bit of southwest guitar instrumental echo – but all in ways that are very fresh and different, and which also sound quite unusual compared to the usual use of guitar in a funky combo! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but really the guitar is the main "voice" – and one that speaks volumes – on titles that include "Lady & Man", "Como Te Quiero", "Shades Of Man", "Maria Tambien", "Como Me Quieres", "A Hymn", and "Rules". KhruangbinHasta El Cielo (with bonus 7 inch) ... LP
Dead Oceans, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
A trippier version of Khruangbin than we're used to – but that's maybe no surprise, given that the whole album's a dub version of the Con Todo El Mundo record – with all the best funky currents of that sweet set, and some wilder modes as well! Drums and bass really get a great workout – and the production isn't the usual Jamaican-inspired dub, but a mode that's maybe partly got a David Axelrod quality – as these guys use the instrumental moments to open up into all these dark, moody corners – while still keeping things nicely funky overall. Titles include "With All The World", "Sisters & Brothers", "How I Love", "Four Of Five", "Hasta El Cielo", and "Order Of Operations". Also includes bonus Scientist mixes on a 7" single – "Rules (Scientist dub)" and "Como Te Quiero (Scientist dub)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Orquesta El MacabeoLluvia Con Sol ... LP
Disco De Hoy, 2013. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
These guys just keep getting better and better – and this time around, they've got such a tight groove, it's hard not to compare the group with some of the best of the 70s salsa generation! Rhythms are right on the money, and the instrumentation is completely sublime – very jazzy, with lots of rich inflections – yet also able to hone to the groove at all the right moments, especially on the trombone and trumpet parts that give the record so much soul! Vocals are strong, too – and the use of tenor sax at just the right points almost acts like a second "voice" for the record – furthering the richness of the whole set. Titles include "Me Repito", "La Sensacion", "Boda", "No Te Debo Nada", "Macacoa", "Olvidame", and "Lluvia Con Sol". (Latin, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

Nestor AlvarezMelting Pot ... LP
Original Gravity (UK), 2024. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
A blistering album of Latin funk – a set that's got a lean vibe but a very classic sound – one that's put together in the same mode as the excellent run of funky 45s from the long-running Original Gravity label! Nestor Alvarez is Neil Anderson – who handles drums, guitars, keyboards, percussion, and plenty more too – layered in with contributions from funky horn combo The O'Gees, and added keyboards, trumpet, trombone, and flute – depending on the cuts. And despite the one man activity at the core, the sound is very live, and very real – especially as the presence of the others really expand out the groove – and make the whole thing feel like a fresh take on the late 60s world of Latin soul and Latin jazz! Titles include "Joanna", "Un Bucanero Mas", "Original Gravity (parts 1 & 2)", "Melting Pot", "En Candela", and "El Ladron En La Noche". LP, Vinyl record album

Timmion, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An instrumental version of the set that the group cut with Jeb Loy Nichols – and one that's really overflowing with the group's wonderful deep funk vibe! The core group features Hammond, bass, and drums – but there's also some added horns on the top, handled by Jukka Eskola – who you might know from his own groovy records, and who really helps add a whole layer of classic soul to the set! Most tunes are in a lightly-tripping version of funk – mellow and laidback, in a way that's not too far from the El Michel's side of the spectrum, but captured with more of the edge of some rare indie label 45. Titles include "My Love", "Like A Rainy Day", "Cry Me Another One", "Living It Up", "Not There Yet", "Help Me Along", "The World Loves A Fool", and "We Gotta Work On It". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dr JohnLocked Down ... CD
Nonesuch, 2012. Used Gatefold ... $5.99
The best record in years – maybe decades – from the legendary Dr John – and a set that stands up strongly next to the messed-up Crescent City vibe of his 70s classics! Big thanks are due to Black Keys' guitarist Dan Auerbach – who produced and supervised the whole recording – and helped create the kind of rootsy studio proceedings that make for just the right vibe to help the Doctor hit all his best classic modes! Leon Michels brings in some great keyboards, too – and an undercurrent of El Michels funk – and Dr John's vocals really sparkle in the setting – stepping out with all the weird raspy elements we love so much. Titles include "Ice Age", "Getaway", "Kingdom Of Izzness", "You Lie", "Eleggua", "My Children My Angels", "Locked Down", and "Big Shot". (Soul, Deep Funk) CD

✨✧ Lee Fields & The ExpressionsMy World ... CD
Truth & Soul, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best new soul records we've heard in years – a tremendous accomplishment for the mighty Lee Fields, and a set that's quite different than any of his other work! We've always loved Lee's funk and deep soul sides, but this album's something new altogether – almost done in the hard-edge, downtempo mode of the east coast harmony scene of the late 60s and early 70s – like some of the best group soul work coming out of New Jersey or Philly, with some super-dope production and instrumentation that's really amazing! The grooves follow strongly in the same laidback style as recent El Michels work – no surprise, given the El Michels connection to the music – with beats that are hard, but slow – and instrumentation that's funky, but in a mellow sort of way. Lee's vocals are as deep as ever – very much trained in the James Brown tradition, but turned here towards a really unique groove that makes us completely reevaluate his talents – an amazing achievement not just for Fields, but also for the whole Truth & Soul/El Michels crew! An instant classic – with tracks that include "My World", "Ladies", "Expressions Theme", "Honey Dove", "Money I$ King", "Love Comes & Goes", "Do You Love Me", and "Last Ride". CD

The Funk Ark floats mighty high on this sweet little set – charting a course on the sea of grooves with strong currents of African and Latin rhythms in the mix! The group are a funk combo at the core, but they've got a great ear for all sounds global – complex rhythms, unusual instrumental inflections, and a forward-moving groove that's able to pull in plenty of different strands, and keep things funky throughout! Funk Ark work here with sweet production from Adrian Quesada, who helps them find just the right sort of vibe in the studio – with the crisp crackle of some of his own work – and titles include "Road To Coba", "High Noon", "Riconcito", "Wayward Bill", "El Rancho Motel", and "Green Tree Yellow Sky". Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsNaturally ... CD
Daptone, 2005. Used ... $5.99
The long-anticipated second album from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings is a stunner – undoubtedly stronger than the group's fantastic debut – and a record that not only transcends the late model funk revival genre, but stands on footing as solid as the best hard funky soul of the late 60s and early 70s! If you're expecting a rehash of the heavy funk jams that burned on the Dap Dippin' album you won't be disappointed, but get ready for a deep, natural (hence the title) soulfulness that not only caught us off guard, but really forms the big, hard-beating heart of the album. The frothing, frenetic funk is as tight as ever, and in spots just as furious, but the attention to songcraft this time out is just as searing and indelible. The eight piece Dap Kings continue to be the best band in the land – with El Michels on baritone sax, Neal Sugarman on tenor, Homer Steinweiss on drums, not-so-secret weapon Bosco Mann on bass, vibes and piano. Guest appearances include fellow Daptone powerhouse vocalist Lee Fields on the the duet "Stranded In Your Love", and strings courtesy of the Bushwick Philharmonic, but make no mistake, this is the band's album. Amazing stuff from in indispensable group – an album that'll keep spinning in our circles for as many years as the great albums by the gritty soul forefathers do! Tracks include "How Do I Let A Good Man Down?", "Natural Born Lover", "My Man Is A Mean Man", a soulful reading of Woodie Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land", "Your Thing Is A Drag", "Fish In A Dish" and "All Over Again". Deep funk, but with a compelling twist – bits of South American styles filtering into the mix from time to time, but in subtle ways that never lose the groove! The album's a soundtrack, but works more like a funk album on its own – and is a great full length follow-up to some of the hip 45 work we've heard from the Colemine label – showing that they may well be on the deeper path of a label like Daptone! The added elements make for some hip exotic inflections from time to time – almost echoes of El Michels, but in a different way – and titles include "Pablo's Dilemma", "High Noon", "Sigamos El Sol", "El Conquistador", "Nadie Puede Escpar", "Andean Folk Song", and "Mirror Door". Excellent work from Setenta – a Parisian combo who work with a great blend of Latin roots and funk – served up with lots of percussion at the core, topped with Fender Rhodes and other keyboards from jazz genius Florian Pellissier! The acoustic percussion and electric keys are perfectly balanced – as you might find on a mid 70s album from Mongo Santamaria, but with a different flavor too – given that these guys explore some Afro roots in their music as well, which creates shifting patterns of rhythms throughout the set. Most tracks have vocals, and titles include "If We Ever Get There", "Permiso", "Mecanica Bestial", "DIA (parts 1 & 2)", "Materia Negra", and "Llego El Malo". LP, Vinyl record album

A very different entry in this always-great series – one that doesn't focus on a specific artist, or just the instrumentation of the two leaders – but instead has this great range of artists coming together in a very jazz-based style! Things here are even more organic and flowing than on some of the other volumes – as there's a very cool array of players that shift nicely from track to track, while still giving the record a unified vibe – work from Jeff Parker on guitar, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Tony Allen on drums, Henry Franklin on bass, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Wendell Harrison on bass clarinet, Jaman Laws on tenor, Phillip Wack on alto, and Scott Mayo on flute – all players who work with Younge and Muhammad to create soulful and funky elements that bring us back to the spirit of the Black Jazz label in the 70s Even if you've heard other titles in the series, this one still really advances the concept even further – and with more live, spontaneous energy in the studio – on titles that include "Running With The Tribe", "Phoenix", "Come As You Are", "Ebun", "El Cambio Es Necesario", "The Avenues", and "The Griot".
