James Taylor QuartetTaste Of Cherry ... CD
Real Self (UK), 2006. Used ... $14.99
One of the best new records we've heard from the James Taylor Quartet in years – a soaringly soulful set that recalls some of Taylor's sweetest soul moments from the early 90s! The sound here is much warmer and tighter than some of James' recent deep funk outings – a groove that's similar to his sublime records with Noel McCoy, but served up here in a groove that's more instrumental overall. Taylor plays his usual Hammond, plus plenty of Fender Rhodes, moog, and a bit of vibes – and Snowboy's in the backing group on production, which is joined on a few numbers by vocalist Yvonne Yanney. The whole sound here is right on the money – tight, but never slick – that perfect classic approach to jazz funk that's always made the JTQ one of the best groups around when they manage to do things right – and this time around, they've done it plenty right! Titles include "Joe's Diversions", "Taste Of Cherry", "Your Kind Of Loving", "Dreaming Of You", "The In-Between", "Dr Grits", and "It's All Over". CD
