Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... $5.99
Even more soulful stuff than before from The Baker Brothers – a record that really has them getting past the gritty funk of earlier records, and hitting a fuller groove that's totally great! The sound here is expanded past the guitar-heavy sounds that we first came to love from the Bakers – and while there's still plenty of funk going on in the set, we're even more impressed at the added range of instrumentation – more keyboards, bits of horns and Hammond, and a rich sound that's pure 70s soul all the way through! Almost all the cuts here are covers – really well-done versions of older numbers, both rare and classic – and most numbers have some vocals, sung by group members, and Vanessa Freeman guesting on one track – a great version of "Family Tree". Other cuts include "Space Funk", "Street Player", "Shack Up", "Couldn't Get It Right", "Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Fly Like An Eagle", "Cola Bottle Baby", "The Mexican", and "Rock Creek Park". CD

Acid Jazz (UK), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard hitting funky 45 material – supposedly recorded by a "lost" funk group from the 70s, but actually the James Taylor Quartet playing under a different name! That little bit of name trickery doesn't stop the album from being a nice batch of funky jazz tracks, though – with lots of hard drums and nice organ solos in the lead, hitting hard like the best early work by the Taylor Quartet, but with a few nice 70s funk touches in the mix! Lots of nice tracks, including "Dream Waves", "On Or Off", "Green Screen", and "Smokin". CD
