San Sebastian Strings/Rod McKuen/Anita KerrWith Love ... LP
Warner, 1975. Sealed ... $2.99
The last album to stem from the long collaboration of Rod McKuen and Anita Kerr – but quite possibly the best as well! There's a depth and sentiment here that goes farther than any other San Sebastian Strings album – quite possibly because the pair realized it was their swan song, or perhaps because after so many records together, they'd really wanted to push the boundaries a bit more than usual. Kerr's arrangements are especially brilliant – juxtaposing some slightly dramatic touches with the sense of space and timing that made For Lovers such a great record. And there's also a nice bit of 70s "adult" instrumentation here – never cheesy, or too electric – but echoing out with the class of a late 60s ad for Johnnie Walker Red, which sounds great next to Rod's boozy heavy-whisper vocals. Titles include "With Love", "Boxing Lessons", "Cycles", "The Runner", "School/The Distance To Monterey", "Furrows/Do It With Love", and "Tearing Down Walls".
