Jack E LeonardRock & Roll Music For Kids Over Sixteen ... LP
Vik, 1956. Very Good ... $4.99
Kind of a rock and roll parody album, but one that also has some nice aspects in the instrumentation – which makes the whole thing feel more like a stack of oddball 45s from the farther reaches of the late 50s underground! The set features assistance from The Four Fives and Will Stomp & His Cannoneers – and titles include "The Genie", "Middle Aged Juvenile Delinquent", "Take Your Cottin Pickin Hands Off My Leather Jacket", "Hello There", and "Rock & Roll Party In The Sky". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam and some aging, with a promo ink stamp and a bit of pen on back.)

✨✧ Tony SchwartzMusic In The Streets – A Fascinating Collection Of Music & Musicians Recorded On The Streets On New York City ... CD
Folkways, 1957. New Copy ... About November 1, 2019
A vivid audio document of New York City in the late 50s – put together by creative sound recorder Tony Schwartz! The set's one of a few amazing albums put together by Schwartz – who spent a lot of time on the streets with his microphones and recorder, then really got creative putting the whole thing together in the studio – so that there's some good structure, and almost a sense of narrative to the record – yet in a way that also preserves all of the vivid, spontaneous aspects of the "on the street" recordings. Schwartz narrates a bit, includes some interviews, background sounds from certain areas of the city, and a range of performances in styles that run from jazz to folk to gospel and beyond! CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! (Out Sound, Comedy/Spoken) LP, Vinyl record album

Amiri BarakaIt's Nation Time ... LP
Black Forum/Motown, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99
An amazing record that's as powerful as the political message of the title – the hippest record ever cut by Amiri Baraka, and that's saying a heck of a lot! Baraka delivers a long and complex set of poetic reflections on the state of Black America, spiritual awakening, and political redemption – set to musical backings that shift from funky, to jazz, to avant, and back again. Players on the set include Gary Bartz, Lonnie Liston Smith, Idris Muhammad, and Reggie Workman – and there's a host of additional players, percussionists, and vocalists that join Amiri in the delivery of his message. Titles include "Answers In Progress", "Peace In Place", "Bad News For Your Highness", "Was Gon Happen", "All In The Street", "Pamoja Tutashinda", and "Pull The Covers Off". One to listen to when you get past your Last Poets records! LP, Vinyl record album

Albert BrooksComedy Minus One ... LP
ABC, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
Albert Brooks' famous takeoff on the Music Minus One series – and a cracker of a comedy record, too! In addition to the title gag – which even includes a script and mirror so you can be the co-star – the record also features Brooks' excellent "Another Kooky Krazy Kall", plus "Other Things", "Special Stereo Demonstration", and "Rewriting The National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

Lenny BruceInterviews Of Our Times ... LP
Fantasy, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Not necessarily a record of interviews – as the title might make you think – but one of Bruce's best records for Fantasy! The album's got some very edgey bits that approximate his live material, and which take the best part of his cleaner act, and transfer them well to record. Titles include "Dijinni In The Candy Store", "Enchanting Transylvania", "Interview With Dr Sholem Stein", "The Interview", "All Broadway Musicals Sound The Same, Especially The Baritones", and "The March Of High Fidelity". LP, Vinyl record album
(Brown label pressing.)

Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali)I Am The Greatest (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1963. New Copy ... $3.99
A great little record – and proof that Muhammad Ali was star material, even in his early years! The record is kind of in the spoken word mode – but has added music by Peter Katz – and features Ali delivering some of his famous poetic "zinger" type material, of the sort that would come to prominence even more strongly during the 70s, as Ali's fame and press presence rose. There's a brashness to his presentation that's totally great, and almost a precursor to more righteous male performance in 60s soul – and the titles of the tunes kind of say it all, and include "The Knockout", "I Have Written A Drama He Said Playfully", "Funny You Should Ask", "I Am The Greatest", and "I Am The Double Greatest". Plus, the CD features 3 bonus tracks – including a version of "Stand By Me"! CD
