Joao GilbertoAmoroso ... CD
Warner, 1977. Used ... $5.99
A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was bringing real magic to the records of pianist Bill Evans at the time – and music is by a core combo that includes American jazz musicians Ralph Grierson on keyboards and Grady Tate on drums – with some additional larger arrangements from Claus Ogerman, but used in a way that never clutters up the sound at all. Instead, Joao sounds beautiful right up front in the mix – with those sublime raspy vocals, and perfectly-placed lines on acoustic guitar – on titles that include a fabulous reading of "Estate", plus Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", and the tracks "Caminha Cruzados", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". Maria RitaSamba Meu ... CD
Warner, 2007. Used ... $5.99
A really beautiful little record by Maria Rita – and a wonderful departure from her previous sets! This time around, as you might guess from the title, Maria's serving up a host of samba tunes – done in a mostly-acoustic mode that crackles with live percussion, acoustic guitar, and other Brazilian instrumentation – a beautifully unfettered setting that almost has Rita sounding even better than before – a lot more human and a lot more personal, shaking off the personal heritage that served well to introduce her to the world, but which also somehow held her back. It's clear from the notes that Maria's a relative newcomer to the samba, but she takes to the style perfectly here – and brings in a sense of warmth and jazz that in turn really help liven up the genre. The balance here is beautiful, and the album's way more than we could have expected – a true treasure from an artist who's finally beginning to make us sit up and take notice. Titles include "Corpitcho", "Novo Amor", "Trajetoria", "O Que E O Amor", "Samba Meu", "O Homem Falou", "Ta Perdoado", "Num Corpo So","Maltratar Nao E Direito", and "Maria Do Socorro". CD

✨✧ Secos & MolhadosSecos e Molhados (1973/1974) ... CD
Warner (Brazil), 1973/1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Essential Brazilian rock from the 70s! Secos e Molhados were a post-Tropicalia group that drew on some of the work of Brazilian groups before them, and mixed it up with hard rock and glam styles that were coming from America and the UK. The leader of the group was singer Ney Matogrosso, who went onto become a bigger star in his own right – and their music has a haunting sound that mixes nice vocal production with spare arrangements supported by guitar, piano, and bass. Difficult to describe, but very compelling – and a key line in a Brazilian tradition that includes Os Mutantes and the early solo work of Rita Lee. This CD features 26 tracks from their only two albums – including "Tercer Mundo", "Prece Cosmica", "Rondo Do Capitao", "Sangue Latino", "O Vira", "Delirio", "O Hierofante", "Angustia", and "Primavera Nos Dentes". Tom ZeSerie 2 Momentos Vol 1 – Se O Caso E Chorar/Todos Os Olhos ... CD
Warner (Brazil), 1972/1973. Used ... $19.99
A collection of two wonderful early 70s albums from Tom Ze, recorded just after the Tropicalia years! Se O Caso E Chorar has a number of tracks with a samba sound at the base – but there's more than enough fantastic material to keep the record fresh, and Tom's writing is as great as ever. There's a vocal group that sings with Ze on many of the tracks on the record – but they also seem to sometimes act as a Greek chorus, in response to breakway vocal passages that are dominated by Ze. Includes the excellent baroque funky number "Dor E Dor", plus the tracks "Sonho Colorido De Um Pintor", "A Baba", "O Sandalo", "A Briga Do Edificio Italia Com O Hilton Hotel", and "Happy End". Todos Os Olhos is the record with the famous cover of a marble balanced on an asshole (!) – and it further refines Tom Ze's distinctive approach to songwriting with an over the top approach that moves far beyond the experimentation of Tropicalia! The record is incredible, with a mix of amazing songs that piece together hard percussion, spare production, quirky guitar, and some of the strangest vocals ever recorded in Brazil. Includes the tracks "Complexo De Epico", "A Noite Do Meu Bem", "Dodo E Zeze", "Brigitte Bardot", and "O Riso E A Faca". Plus the CD booklet reproduces the artwork and inserts of the original albums. Herbie Mann & Joao GilbertoHerbie Mann & Joao Gilberto With Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Atlantic, 1966. Used ... $12.99
Although Herbie and Joao are listed together in the artist credits together for the record, they don't really play together on the record – as did Joao and Stan Getz on their album together. Instead, they trade off tracks of bossa nova material, recorded with Jobim in Rio – Joao's by EMI/Odeon, Herbie's by Atlantic. The set includes a host of great light breezy bossa stuff – like "Amor Em Paz", "O Barquinho", "Bim Bom", "Bolinha De Papel", and "Deve Ser Amor". Not totally over the top, but a very nice batch of breezy bossa tracks with lots of light flute and guitar lines floating around! CD
(Out of print, 2011 digipack pressing from Warner Brasil. Back cover has a small, light stain.)
