Maria Bethania25 Anos ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A beautiful tribute to 25 years in Brazilian music by Maria Bethania – and a record that's easily one of her greatest efforts from later years! The album's something of an all-star effort – with guest vocals from Nina Simone, Joao Gilberto, Gal Costa, and others – and tremendous instrumentation from Wagner Tiso, Hermeto Pascoal, Jaime Alem, Sivuca, and Jose Roberto Bertrami – all of whom help to give the record a sense of majesty that matches Bethania's tremendous vocals. There's none of the overwrought "tour de force" quality going on here – and instead, the guests all make relatively restrained contributions – always letting Maria keep center stage, in a way that shows their support simply, and subtly. Titles include "Quase", "Maria/Linda Flor", "Tomara", "Flor De Lr Embora", "Awo/Inhansa", "Palavra/Apesar De Voce", "Tocando Em Frendte", and "Logrador". CD
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, July 21.

✨✧ Maria BethaniaA Tua Presenca ... LP
Philips/Universal (Brazil), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $54.99 79.99
Wonderful early work from Maria Bethania – an album that's put together with a very sophisticated sound, and a really powerful feel overall! The orchestrations are relatively baroque – sometimes using strings in odd ways, other times bringing in bits of voices – all very much in keeping with the genius that was brewing at the time in albums by Gal Costa or Nara Leao. And oddly, the backings for the album are not credited at all – save possibly to Manoel Barenbein, who's listed as the director of the production – and we're guessing that Maria had a good deal to do with the overall sound of the set, not just the vocals! Titles include a wonderful groover called "Mano Caetano", done as a duet with Jorge Ben, and very much in Ben's best style from the time – and other tracks include "Janelas Abertas No 2", "Jesus Cristo", "Que Me Dera", "Folha Morta", "Mariana, Mariana", and "A Tua Presenca Morena". Maria BethaniaAlibi ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Strong work by Maria Bethania from the late 70s – a session that has her tightening up her sound a bit more than before, but without any loss of her sense of drama or emotion! The album was recorded with a number of different musical backgrounds, including many small group settings with guitar by Rosinha De Valenca – an artist we love on her own, and who adds in a nicely personal touch to this album's mix of strings, keyboards, and rootsier percussion. The guitar works nicely with Maria's voice, and is perhaps second in the mix behind her singing – giving the songs a nice focus even when the backings are quite large. Songs are a mix of tunes by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and other likely suspects – and titles include "Calice", "Interior", "De Todas As Maneiras", "O Meu Amor", "Ronda", and "Diamante Verdadeiro". Maria BethaniaAs Cancoes Que Voce Fez Pra Mim ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1993. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A set of compositions penned by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos – sung by Maria Bethania in a warmly personal setting! The style here gets away from any of the too-romantic qualities that can sometimes mar presentation of the Carlos' brothers work – and instead, Bethania uses her innate sense of power and drama to give these tunes a subtle edge they might not have in the hands of other singers. Backings are sometimes full, but also in a subtle way – using strings slightly to flesh out other instrumentation that's more prominent in the mix. Titles include "Olha", "Detalhes", "Voce Nao Sabe", "Emocoes", "Seu Corpo", "Fera Ferida", "Palavras", and "Costumes". CD

Maria BethaniaMemoria De Pele ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
One of Maria Bethania's great collaborations with arranger Jaime Alem – an artist we loved as part of the team of Jaime & Nair back in the 70s, and who's really helping Bethania find some deeper space here in the middle years of her career! At a time when Maria had moved into some of the warmer, more electric modes of her contemporaries, Alem helped her regain the sense of power heard in her classic 70s work – but at a level that was quite different than on those records, with a more restrained sensibility overall – making some especially great use of the aging qualities of her voice. Titles include "Junho", "Confesso", "Tenha Calma", "Reconvexo", "Memoria Da Pele", "Salve As Folhas", "Guerra No Mar", and "Vinganca". CD

Edu Lobo & Maria BethaniaEdu & Bethania ... CD
Elenco/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A pivotal album in the careers of Edu Lobo and Maria Bethania – united in a series of unique duets for this classic Elenco session from 1966! The album pre-dates most of Bethania's other work, and is done in a style that's got all the best touches of Lobo's baroque post-bossa arranging style – but with an overall sound that's a bit more stripped-down and rootsy. Edu and Maria duet on about half the tracks, trading vocals back and forth over some incredibly beautiful arrangements – and the remaining tracks feature each artist singing solo. The whole thing's amazing, and titles include great versions of "Upa Neguinho", "Lua Nova", "Candeias", "Veleiro", "So Me Fez Bem", "O Tempo E O Rio", and "Boranda". CD

✨✧ Maria BethaniaRecital En La Boite Barroco ... LP
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1971. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of Maria Bethania's first albums, and a beautiful set of live recordings – with a vibe that's a lot more uptempo and swinging than some of her later work! The style here almost has traces of bossa – a lighter, groovier feel at times than some of the more emotive modes that Bethania became known for during her run of 70s MPB. Backing here is by the bossa-esque Terra Trio, and they accompany her deep rich voice nicely on tracks like "Marina", "Carinhoso", "Marginalia II", "Ele Valava Nisso Todo Dia", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Baby". Very cool cover, too – with a trippy painting that has Maria's nude torso covered with flowers and bugs! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono green & white label pressing. Cover is housed in a plastic sleeve laminate which has some aging.)

Joao Gilberto/Caetano Veloso/Gilberto Gil/Maria BBrasil ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
The best of Brazil, old and new – as Joao Gilberto meets up with a younger generation of Brazilian vocalists – Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania – all for a wonderful session of stripped-down bossa! The work is very much in Joao's best style of the early 70s – a back to basics return, handled with even more intimacy than before – with production by Gilberto, and some beautifully understated arrangements from Johnny Mandel! Tracks are all nice and long, and allow for lots of vocal interplay between the four singers on the set. Titles include "Cordeiro De Nana", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Milagre", and "Bahia Com H". CD

Edu Lobo70 Anos ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2014. Used ... $9.99
Edu Lobo at 70 – looking better than we did at 30 – working here in a wonderfully rich record that returns him to the glory of his most sophisticated sides from decades back! The performance is a live one – with a full orchestra behind the smaller combo – and Edu sings, and contributed all songs – and also gets wonderful help from guests who include Maria Bethania, Chico Buarque, Bena Lobo, and Monica Salmaso – all artists who duet with Lobo on a few tracks each, then all join together at the end! The approach is beautiful – more collaborative than most other albums from Edu, but in a way that still retains the magic and majesty of his music. Titles include "Noite De Verao", "Ponteio", "Cheganca", "Vento Bravo", "Ave Rara", "Corcacao Cigano", "Valsa Brasileira", and "Canto Triste". CD

✨✧ Joao GilbertoAmoroso/Brasil ... CD
Warner, 1977/1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of two albums that Joao Gilberto did for Warner Brothers in the late 70s/early 80s. Amoroso is some pretty sweet stuff from Joao Gilberto – featuring a core jazz combo playing along with a larger set of arrangements, in a manner that's similar to some of Jobim's work from the 70s. The album features a nice vocal version of Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", plus the tracks "Estate", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". On Brasil, Joao Gilberto meets the younger generation of Brazilian vocalists – Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania – and the four of them lay down some nice jazzy stuff, with all the vocals weaving in and out. Tracks are nice and long, and titles include "Cordeiro De Nana", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Milagre", and "Bahia Com H". Johnny Mandel conducted, and Joao produced. CD

✨✧ Marisa MonteVerdade Uma Ilusao – Tour 2012/2013 ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really lovely live work from Marisa Monte – an artist who's kept on making marvelous records over the years – even long after the initial wave of attention that brought her some global fame! This set's got Monte working in a mature mode that's almost in the territory of Gal Costa or Maria Bethania – stepping out front of some commanding arrangements that sometimes use bits of strings, sometimes have a smaller spontaneous group – but which are always topped by Monte's proud, confident vocals. There's a classic feel here that's almost better than some of her studio work over the past decade or so – although that's all pretty great too – and title sinclude "Arrepio", "Descalco No Parque", "Diariamente", "ECT", "De Mais Ninguem", "Dizem", "Lencinho Querido", and 'Sono Come Tu Mi Vuoi". ✨✧ Caetano VelosoMTV Ao Vivo Caetano Zii & Zie ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2011. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Caetano Veloso live on MTV – but sounding a lot hipper than anything you'd get from the network in this country! Veloso's working here with his small Zii E Zie combo – a great back-to-basics quartet that helps keep the sound lean and mean – almost intimate at times, with a great focus on Caetano's lovely vocals and guitar work. The tunes are straightforward, but often have a slightly offbeat edge – and the set mixes together some new material by the group and older Veloso favorites from years back. Titles include "A Voz Do Morto", "Sem Cais", "Perdeu", "Trem Das Cores", "Por Quem", "Maria Bethania", "Volver", "Irene", "Lapa", "Agua", and "Eu Sou Neguinha". CD

✨✧ VariousBeleza Tropical – Brazil Classics Vol 1 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! Most of the artists here are the bigger names of the MPB generation of the 70s – but many are still very under-represented in the US market – which makes the collection of work here completely essential. The styles range from samba soul of Jorge Ben to the lyrical poetry of Caetano Veloso to the soulful drama of Milton Nascimento – and titles include "Ponta De Lanca Africano" and "Fio Varavilha" by Jorge Ben, "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Quilombo O El Dorado Negro" and "So Quero Um Xodo" by Gilberto Gil, "Quiexa" and "O Leaozinho" by Caetano Veloso, "Sonho Meu" by Maria Bethania & Gal Costa, "Caixa De Sol" by Nazare Pereira, and "Anima" by Milton Nascimento.
