✨✧ Sergio MendesIn The Key Of Joy ... CD
Concord, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Back in the day, Sergio Mendes was best known for the core energy of his groups – the legendary Brasil 66 and Brasil 77 – but in the 21st Century, Sergio's also become quite a collaborator – part of a legacy that's definitely continued here on a set of tracks that features work from guests who include Common, Roge, Cali Y El Dandee, Sugar Joans, Shelea, and Buddy – as well as more familiar Brazilian talents Guinga, Hermeto Pascoal, and longtime vocalist Gracina Leporace! The style bounces along in a mix of modern R&B and older Rio elements – but there's also maybe a wider pan-Latin vision to the whole project, much more so than some of Mendes other 21st Century albums – proof that the man is alive and well, and always still working hard to build a bridge between cultures. Titles include "Love Came Between Us", "Sabor Do Rio", "Bora La", "La Noche Entera", "Samba In Heaven", "Catch The Wave", "Times Go By", "This Is It", and "Tangara". CD

✨✧ Tania MariaBrazil With My Soul (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Barclay (Japan), 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Tania Maria – recorded in France right before her departure for bigger fame in the US! The set's got a fully jazzy feel that we really really love – one that has Tania's fluid vocals and soulful piano alongside backings that are expanded past her usual trio – with trumpet, tenor, flute, and cello fleshing out the sound, range, and emotion of the tunes. And while the album has a mellow feel overall, there's a gentle grace that sweeps the whole thing up in a mature interpretation of the bossa idiom – a mode that really sets the stage for some of Maria's later work on Concord, but which is done here with a sense of personal poetry that we really treasure. Titles include "Passarella", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "Para Chick", "Tatiana", "Rua 17B", "Ze", and "Pecados Meus". CD
(Out of print.)
