✨✧ Moreno Veloso + 2 (Domenico/Kassin)Maquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... LP
Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousBrazil USA 70 – Brazilian Music In The USA In The 1970s ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Fantastic grooves from the 70s – tracks that are part of a great second wave of Brazilian music to hit our shores, then take off in a whole new direction! The US was no stranger to Brazilian sounds in the 60s – given the popularity of bossa nova and a few other styles – but as the 70s approached, a new generation of artists started to hit the American scene – often with richer, more sophisticated ideas that built on older bossa and samba modes, then combined them with new approaches to jazz, funk, and soul! This killer set presents a perfect portrait of that time – mixing familiar names with newcomers, or Brazilian recording artists with American studio talents – all in a batch of cuts that still stand as some of our favorite Brazilian grooves of all time – even if they didn't come from Rio or Sao Paulo. Titles include "Bahia Soul" by Luiz Bonfa, "Catavento" by Milton Nascimento, "Ain't No Sunshine" by Sivuca, "Braun Blek Blu" by Dom Um Romao, "Skyscrapers" by Deodato, "Sandalia Delia" by Duke Pearson with Flora Purim, "Samba De Flora" by Airto, "Consolacao" by Tamba 4, "Moon Dreams" by Flor Purim, "Andei" by Airto, "Almas Irmas" by Joao Donato, "Kathy" by Moacir Santos, "Tombo In 7/4" by Airto, "Rio Vermelho" by Milton Nascimento, and "Escravos De Jo" by Dom Um Romao. VariousNew Brazilian Music – Pernambuco ... CD
Trama (Brazil), 2005. Used ... $1.99
A wonderful overview of the rich strands of music that have been coming out of Brazil's Pernambuco region in recent years – a brilliant criss-crossing of styles that's some of the freshest new work we've heard in a while! Pernambuco is somewhat free from the confines of the bigger cities, and is a virtual crossroads of cultures in the north of Brazil – a place where older rhythms and instrumentation come into play with styles borrowed from Europe and Africa – not just old and acoustic, but new and electronic as well! Tracks on the set are highly rhythmic and extremely striking – rootsy one minute, but freshly modern the next. And although a few names here will be familiar to those interested in modern Brazilian music, there's some even more surprising lesser-known artists on the set! Titles include "Anum Azul" by Isaar, "Cordao De Prata" by Selma Do Coco, "Balao Azul" by Banda De Pifanos De Caruaru, "Poneteio Acutilado" by Antonio Nobrega, "Anjos Do Asfalto" by Otto, "Trancelim De Marfim" by DJ Dolores, "Blunt Of Judah" by Nacao Zumbi, "Fuloresta Do Samba" by Siba, "A Ponte" by Lenine, "A Missa" by Mombojo, and "Alice Williams" by Mundo Livra SA. CuruminJapan Pop Show ... CD
YB Music/Quannum, 2008. Used ... $6.99
Brazilian funk from Curumin – a contemporary set, but one that features a fair bit of old school influences as well! In a way, Curumin's music is sort of an update of the 70s samba soul sound with a bit more beats – taking the older Brazilian styles into a 21st Century range, and dropping in some surprising sounds and careful touches that really make the set sparkle! There's hardly a feel of gimmick here – especially once you get past the first track or two – and we're surprised at the depth of the music, as Curumin seems to be working here with even more sensitivity than before. Guests include Marku Ribas, Lucas Santtana, and Blackalicious – and titles include "Compacto", "Kyoto", "Dancando No Escuro", "Magrela Fever", "Caixa Preta", "Saida Bangu", "Misterio Stereo", "Mal Eestar Card", and "Sambito". Antonio AdolfoViralata ... LP
Artezanal/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 26.98
Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AirtoSeeds On The Ground – The Natural Sounds Of Airto (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Buddah/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 32.99
Easily one of the greatest records that Brazilian percussionist Airto ever recorded – a stunning blend roots and jazzy currents, and a set that follows strongly off his work in the group Quarteto Novo! The set's got contributions from one of his key partners in that combo – reedman Hermeto Pascoal – and like Pascoal's material at this point, the whole thing is maybe one of the most perfect realizations of the musical vision that Airto was going for! There's none of the tighter, more polished sounds of his later fusion years – and this is the record that will show you just why his arrival on the American scene made such big waves at the time. Flora Purim also sings on the record – and titles include "Andei", "On Sonho", Papo Furado", and "O Galho da Rosiera". LP, Vinyl record album

Antonio Carlos & JocafiLouvado Seja ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1977. Used ... $14.99
A classic batch of funky samba tracks by this sublime 70s duo! Antonio Carlos and Jocafi transformed the sound of Brazilian music during the 70s – singing together on most recordings to create a spacious counterpoint style of vocals, which was often produced with slight electricity in the mix, flanging out the vocals to meet the funkiness of the rhythms, in a tightly dancing mode that quickly made them one of the best groups of the Samba Soul era! This 1977 set has a sweetly soulful edge that shows them growing a bit from earlier albums – and titles include "Cordel", "Homem e Homem", "Opus 2", "Rey Oxossi", and "Sossega Leao". CD

Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". AzymuthDemos 1973 to 1975 ... CD
Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", "Unknown Song For Mario Telles", "Manha", "Duro De Roer", "Quem Tem Medo", "Juntos Mais Uma Vez", and "Bateria Do Mamao". Banda Black RioO Som Das Americas ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2019. Used ... $14.99
Contemporary work from Banda Black Rio – the legendary Brazilian funk band who gave us some really great records in the 70s! Turns out, the group still sounds great after all the passage of years – more in a modern soul mode overall, with a few more sophisticated twists and turns alongside the grooves – and a wider style overall, to make room for guests who include Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, Cesar Camargo Mariano, and others! Think of the music as a progression from earlier Brazilian soul modes – a bit in the way that early Ed Motta work was a step forward from the generation of Tim Maia – and amidst the great guest vocal work, there's also plenty of sharp instrumentation. Titles include "Arthur E O Gigante", "America Do Sul", "Labirintos", "Rir E Chorar", "Isabela", "Aos Pes Do Redentor", "Vento Leva", "Aguas Sabias", "Bossa Da Praia", and "Nove No Samba". CD

Banda Black RioSuper Nova Samba Funk ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A brilliant new vision for the legendary Banda Black Rio – the pioneering samba, soul and funk combo that broke so much ground in the 70s and remain vital to this day – led here by William Magalhaes, in a mode that celebrates decades of the best Brazilian music, while fearlessly moving it forward! William's father Oberdan Magalhaes was a driving force behind the original Banda Black Rio, and we couldn't really imagine a more appropriate new vision for the group than his son's. William wrote or co-wrote each track and he sings, plays keys and synth, guitar, bass, drums and more. The expansive group brings a depth of percussion, horns, strings and vocals – delivering timeless and dexterous jazzy Brazilian funk and dancefloor soul. The guest list includes classic and contemporary greats like Seu Jorge, Elza Soares, Marcio Local, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and others! Includes "Louis Lane" with Seu Jorge & Mano Brown, "Super Nova Samba Funk (9 No Samba)", "America Do Sul", "Isabela" feat Elza Soares and Cesar Camargo Mariano, "Samba Nova", "Quem Vem La" feat Marcio Local, "Deixa Estar" feat Aleh, "Lindos Olhos" feat Seu Jorge and Don Pixote, "Paname" feat Pyroman, "Final Feliz", "Irere" feat Gilberto Gil, "Aos Pes Do Redentor" feat Caetano Veloso and more. 16 tracks on the CD version. Trama (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $9.99
A delightful collision of music old and new – as acoustic Brazilian choro comes into play with more booty-styled beats – in a blend that's surprisingly great on the best numbers in the set! The style is one that might sound a bit hokey on paper, but it comes off well – never too overdone, and with an energy that makes the whole record crackle with the feel of new discovery. A big part of the credit goes to DJ Marcelinho, who produced the whole thing – and manages to balance things out nicely without letting the R&B side of the record overwhelm the classic one. Titles include "Mandinga Beat", "Quero Paz", "Beat 6", "Coisa Linda", "Favela Beat", "Samba Bem", "Som Estereofonico", "Meu Beatchoro", and "Kissanga No Kalunga". CD

Maria and Caetano share the stage on about half the cuts, dueting in a way that's even better than we expected – especially because Caetano's warm fragile vocals are a perfect counterpoint to Maria's deep rich ones. The other tracks feature one or the other singing solo – and given the time of the recording, they're both in prime form, and the set's a delight to hear whatever the format. Leonardo V BocciaHomenagem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lugar Alto (Brazil), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". Victor Assis BrasilEsperanto/Victor Assis Brasil Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Quartin/Far Out (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A fantastic double-length set – two full albums of music, essential for any fan of Brazilian jazz – or even jazz in general! First up is Esperanto – an incredible album from one of Brazil's greatest reed players of the 70s – the mighty Victor Assis Brasil – a free-thinking spirit who really took Brazilian jazz in bold new directions at the time! The record shows Victor absorbing a lot of post-Coltrane influences, and blending them with a tight approach to rhythm – laid down here by Dom Salvador on piano (and organ), Edison Lobo on bass, and Edson Machando on drums. The group is completed by Helio Delmiro on guitar, and Claudio Roditi plays trumpet on one track – but the real highlight is the amazing reed work by Brasil, which is filled with soul and warmth, plus a deep sense of exploration. The whole session was put together by Roberto Quartin in 1970 – and it's still extremely fresh today. Titles include "Children", "Gingerbread Boy", "Senegal", and "Marilia". Next is Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim – a fantastic album from this legendary Brazilian saxophonist – and one that's way different than the usual instrumental reading of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim! The setting is less of a bossa-inspired one than a post-Coltrane mode – as Victor Assis Brasil blows alto sax, and a bit of soprano – on long, stretched out versions of Jobim compositions – often given a bit of modal energy, thanks to the group's strong piano and organ performances by Dom Salvador. The rest of the players are all great, too – Helio Delmiro on guitar, Edson Lobo on bass, and Edison Machado on drums – all players who grew up in the bossa jazz years of the 60s, but who here are set free to explore new territory by producer Roberto Quartin. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Bonita", "Wave", "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce", and "Dindi". CD also features two bonus tracks – alternate takes of "Ao Amigo Quartin" and "Marilla". Bruno ESao Paulo Jazz Rebels ... CD
Tratore (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Bruno E sounds fantastic here, and very different than the broken beat maestro we loved on his records from the early part of this century – as Bruno's moved into a much warmer jazz-based environment, and plays acoustic bass here with a very hip little combo! Most of the tracks are instrumental, and the group has trumpet, tenor, and trombone – all used with the rhythms in a way that's rooted in soul jazz, but which moves to sparkle with some of the more contemporary tones of club jazz groups from the Italian, Japanese, and Scandinavian scene – although the focus here isn't entirely on grooves, but on the richer feel of the music. Bruno also sings on a few cuts too – in English, which is great – with these mature, poetic lyrics that are unlike anything else he's ever given us – just one more great aspect of this really wonderful record! Titles include "Backstage Jazz", "Rua Artur Prado", "We Hostel", "At Jazz It Up", "O Do Borogodo", "Vegas", and "Av Paulista". CD

Chico BuarqueCaravanas – Ao Vivo ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2018. Used 2CDs ... $12.99
A fantastic live follow-up to the Caravanas album by Chico Buarque – and done at a similar level that shows that Chico's lost none of his charms as the years go by! The set's got the man upfront, singing and playing acoustic guitar – with a combo behind him, kicking up the rhythms in a great way – maybe with a bit more force than on the studio album, as Chico and the group run through an extended lineup of songs that's really great all the way through! The whole thing's a fantastic reminder of the way that Brazilian culture never lets go of its musicians, even as they age – and the musicians themselves continue to grow great as they mature, only rewarding the culture with great gifts like this in the process. Titles include "Casualmente", "Minha Embaixanda Chegou Mambembe", "Dueto", "Injuriado", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "Tua Cantiga", "Sabia", "A Historia De Lilly Braun A Bela E A Fera", "Gota D'Agua", and "Geni E O Zepelim". Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2007. Used 2CDs ... $14.99
As great as he is in the studio, Chico Buarque's almost even better live – especially in a setting like this, where all his personality and charm can really shine through! The set's an extremely well done recording – one that features Chico working with backings that are full, but never clunky, nor competing with his vocals in the space of the arena. And if anything, the overall sound is an extension of the warm modes that Chico laid down on his great studio album Carioca – but made even more personal through the live performance here. The double-length set is overflowing with great tunes – and is another great illustration of the increasing depth of Buarque's music in his later years. Titles include "Renata Maria", "Outros Sonhos", "Imagina", "O Futebol", "A Historia De Lily Braun", "Ela Faz Cinema", "Eu Te Amo", "Bolero Blues", "Leve", "Futuros Amantes", "Joao E Maria", and "Quem Te Viu Quem Te Ve". The debut of a legend – Chico Buarque's first album for RGE, and a groundbreaking batch of tunes that helped shape the sound of popular music in Brazil for years to come! The album's almost a 21st Century realization of the sound that Azymuth was going for back in the day – cascading percussion with plenty of influences from Brazilian music and jazz, often given some electric elements along the way – but always in a style that's warmly organic, and right on the groove! Conti gets help from younger Azymuth and Incognito generations – as Alex Malherios plays bass on the record and Daniel Maunick handles keyboards, more percussion, and production – all at a level that never stomps on Ivan's vision at all – and which instead makes the whole thing as rewarding as any Azymuth session we've heard over the past few decades. Most tracks are instrumental, save for some airy wordless vocals – but Thiago Martins sings lead on "Que Legal", and other titles include "Aroeira", "Bacurau", "Poison Fruit", "Jemburi", "Ecos Da Mata", "Encontro", and "Tempestades". CD features bonus mixes – "Ilha Da Luz (Tenderlonius rmx)", "Encontro (Glenn Astro rmx)", "Que Legal (Reginald Omas Mamode IV rmx)", "Encontro (Max Graef rmx)", and "Poison Fruit (Dokta Venom's digital dub rmx)". Lula CortesRosa De Sangue (LP sleve edition) ... CD
Rozenblit/Time Lag Records, 1980. Used ... $6.99
The final chapter of Lula Cortes amazing run of music in 70s Brazil – a small label release that brilliantly blends together a range of psychedelic influences – all with a gritty edge that's quite different than what you might expect from the date of the album! Things here are every bit as tripped out as on some of Lula's other albums from years before – trippily poetic, occasionally folksy, and sometimes touched with heavier electric moments that really offset the gentler, more organic moments. The reissue features full notes on the music by Cortes himself – and the package offers a rare chance to hear an album whose original pressing was supposedly destroyed before it was ever released! Really great sound, and a lovely package that more than lives up to Lula's amazing music. CD
