PapeteBerimbau E Percussao – Music & Rhythms Of Brasil ... CD
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s-Early 80s. Used ... $19.99
Great stuff! This is Soul Jazz's compilation of the beautiful music of the Brazilian percussionist Papete. The work here spans a wide range of styles, but like all the Soul Jazz comps, it's put together in a fantastic way that spins and swirls through an amazing mix of music. Some cuts have a strident jazzy feel to them, like the album's great cover of "Ponteio", while others are much more stripped down and folkloric sounding. Never a dull moment, and Papete plays a range of instruments – from drums, to cuica, to tamborim, to marimbas – and a whole lot more! If you like some of Airto's stuff, or if you were one of the many who've bought the Quarteto Novo LP from us – you'll love this one! CD

Mario AdnetJobim Jazz ... CD
Adventure Music, 2007. Used ... $6.99
Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... CD
Atoll Music (France), 1967. Used ... $33.99
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". ✨✧ Sergio MendesTimeless ... CD
Concord/Hear Music, 2006. Used ... $1.99
A new record by the legendary Sergio Mendes – bursting into the 21st century on a catchy wave of Will I Am production – reworking gems from the Brazilian songbook and more with guest appearances by Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, India Arie, Black Thought, Chali 2Na, Marcelo D2, John Legend and others! Will I Am has been annoying hip hop purists for years thanks to the relentless candy-coated pop gloss of recent Black Eyed Peas records – but he brings an intelligent, reverent and educated approach to the Brazilian keys legend Sergio Mendes – whose familiar grooves are a lovely accomplice to the sparkling hip hop/pop background. The guest stars seem to be here out of genuine love of the music – and provide far more graceful appearances than we would have expected! A very sweet surprise with bright, warm, and lovely moments – almost good enough for us to forgive Will I Am for "My Humps"! Tracks include "Mas Que Nada" feat Black Eyed Peas, "Berimbau/Consolacao" feat Stevie Wonder & Gracinha Leporace, "That Heat" feat Erykah Badu & Will I Am, "Let Me" feat Jill Scott & Will I Am, "Please Baby Don't" feat John Legend, "Samba Da Bencao" feat Marcelo D2, "Yes, Yes, Y'All" feat Black Thought, Chali 2Na & others and much more! Lisa OnoBrasil ... CD
Dream Music (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... $23.99
Lovely work from Lisa Ono – one of the first singers of the modern age to return to the genius of 60s bossa, and one of the few to keep getting it right over the years! Here, Lisa sings with studio help from Mario Adnet – that great contemporary bossa talent who's got a key ear for updating instrumentation without ever losing the charm of the past – keeping things live, spontaneous, and with just the right current of sadness – but all without ever just aping the styles of the 60s either. Lisa's voice is wonderful – maybe even better here than on her earlier records – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Roda", "Mas Que Nada", "O Cantador", "Lapinha", "Tim Dom Dom", "Sa Marina", "Bossa Na Praia", and "Chove Chuva". A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... $9.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". CD is beautifully done – with full notes in the great Lion tradition – and bonus tracks that include "Sem Nada" and "18.30 Parte 1". (Rock, Brazil) CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley & The Bossa Rio Sextet With Sergio Mendes ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Near Mint- ... $8.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". (Jazz, Brazil) LP, Vinyl record album

AirtoSeeds On The Ground – The Natural Sounds Of Airto (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Buddah/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Easily one of the greatest records that Brazilian percussionist Airto ever recorded – a stunning blend roots and jazzy currents, and a set that follows strongly off his work in the group Quarteto Novo! The set's got contributions from one of his key partners in that combo – reedman Hermeto Pascoal – and like Pascoal's material at this point, the whole thing is maybe one of the most perfect realizations of the musical vision that Airto was going for! There's none of the tighter, more polished sounds of his later fusion years – and this is the record that will show you just why his arrival on the American scene made such big waves at the time. Flora Purim also sings on the record – and titles include "Andei", "On Sonho", Papo Furado", and "O Galho da Rosiera". LP, Vinyl record album

Antonio Carlos & JocafiLouvado Seja ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1977. Used ... $19.99
A classic batch of funky samba tracks by this sublime 70s duo! Antonio Carlos and Jocafi transformed the sound of Brazilian music during the 70s – singing together on most recordings to create a spacious counterpoint style of vocals, which was often produced with slight electricity in the mix, flanging out the vocals to meet the funkiness of the rhythms, in a tightly dancing mode that quickly made them one of the best groups of the Samba Soul era! This 1977 set has a sweetly soulful edge that shows them growing a bit from earlier albums – and titles include "Cordel", "Homem e Homem", "Opus 2", "Rey Oxossi", and "Sossega Leao". CD

AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". AzymuthDemos 1973 to 1975 – Vol 1 ... LP
Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles on this first volume include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", and "Unknown Song For Mario Telles". LP, Vinyl record album

AzymuthOutubro (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Wicked early work from Azymuth – one of the albums that the group recorded when they were really starting to take off on the global scene – burning strong with a soulful fusion vibe, lots of Brazilian rhythm currents, and always hitting all the right notes in their music! The sound here is still relatively spare, and sublimely reliant on the keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami – who plays Fender Rhodes, organ, and percussion on the set. Ivan Conti handles the main percussion, though – a great mix of tight work on the drum kit and rootsier, Airto-like elements that are totally great – and the whole thing's driven along nicely by bass and guitar from Alex Malheiros – a perfectly fused lineup that really hits their own groove on the set. Guests include Aleuda on percussion and vocals, Gordinho on surdo, and Doto on repinique – and titles include "Papasong", "Outubro", "Maracana", "Un Amigo", "Carta Pro Airto", and "Dear Limmertz". Leonardo V BocciaHomenagem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lugar Alto (Brazil), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". Bruno ESao Paulo Jazz Rebels ... CD
Tratore (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Bruno E sounds fantastic here, and very different than the broken beat maestro we loved on his records from the early part of this century – as Bruno's moved into a much warmer jazz-based environment, and plays acoustic bass here with a very hip little combo! Most of the tracks are instrumental, and the group has trumpet, tenor, and trombone – all used with the rhythms in a way that's rooted in soul jazz, but which moves to sparkle with some of the more contemporary tones of club jazz groups from the Italian, Japanese, and Scandinavian scene – although the focus here isn't entirely on grooves, but on the richer feel of the music. Bruno also sings on a few cuts too – in English, which is great – with these mature, poetic lyrics that are unlike anything else he's ever given us – just one more great aspect of this really wonderful record! Titles include "Backstage Jazz", "Rua Artur Prado", "We Hostel", "At Jazz It Up", "O Do Borogodo", "Vegas", and "Av Paulista". CD

The debut of a legend – Chico Buarque's first album for RGE, and a groundbreaking batch of tunes that helped shape the sound of popular music in Brazil for years to come! Buarque predates the Tropicalia era, but is working here in a style that clearly allowed for their later impact – a mode that draws on styles from bossa, folklore, and samba – but which somehow manages to rise into a groove that's all its own. Buarque's genius can immediately be summed up in classics on the set – like "Pedro Pedreiro", "A Rita", "Tem Mais Samba", "A Banda", and "Ole Ola" – all wonderful numbers that make the album an essential one in any collection! Erasmo Carlos sounds even cooler here than usual – still working with tunes penned with his brother Roberto – but also taking on music by Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, and Marcos Valle too! There's a heady undercurrent to the record that's maybe a filtering-through of an earlier Tropicalia vibe – a mode that Erasmo never embraced, but which leaves its impression in some of the more striking arrangements here – especially in the way things trip out at all the best times! A seminal set from Erasmo Carlos – a record that has him stepping past the simpler rock modes of his youth, and really embracing some of the great changes going on in Brazilian music at the start of the 70s! These changes aren't just the expected psych modes, but also some of the more lofty, complicated arrangements used by artists like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo – a mode that comes through beautifully here and sets up Erasmo's vocals with these incredible backings that really make him sound fantastic – a bit funky here, a bit groovy there – and sometimes with this more cerebral sound that none of his listeners would have expected a few records back. Titles include "Estou Dez Anos Atrasado", "Jeep", "Teletema", "Sentado A Beira Do Caminho", "Coqueiro Verde", "A Bronca Da Galinha", "Menina", and "Saudosismo".
