A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Continental/Groovie/Lion, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". Bonus tracks include "Sem Nada" and "18:30 Parte 1". (Rock, Brazil) LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley & The Bossa Rio Sextet With Sergio Mendes ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Very Good ... $14.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". (Jazz, Brazil) LP, Vinyl record album

Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $18.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles on this first volume include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", and "Unknown Song For Mario Telles". LP, Vinyl record album

CID/Far Out (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
A very weird record – and an odd parody of both Os Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso! The album's recorded live, and it's very much in the spirit of early work by Os Novos Baianos – with loads of tunes that have a funky samba style, with some nice rough touches – but there's also a laugh track to the set, clearly marking the record as a comedy effort! From what we know, the set's a parody of the artists named in the title, and their laidback approach to music – but since we can't really understand the lyrics, we just enjoy the grooves – as the record's got plenty of strong rootsy groovers that stand out, even if you can't get the jokes! Philips/Survival Research (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... About September 25, 2019
An overlooked treasure from the great Jorge Ben – an album recorded between the fame of his "Taj Mahal" hit and Africa Brasil classic – and a set that's every bit as wonderful as those two records! There's a tight, choppy groove to most of the set – that mix of samba, soul, and currents of American funk that Jorge created in his music – turned here towards some of the unusual themes that showed up on his Tabua De Esmeralda album, but maybe given a bit more punch, too – so that even without the benefit of language, the vocals and grooves on the set are completely captivating to a global audience! There's loads of fresh sounds here – some real under-discovered gems from Jorge's key 70s years – and titles include "Cuidado Com O Bulldog", "Zagueiro", "Para Ouvir No Radio (Luciana)", "Jorge De Capadocia", "Dumingaz", "Se Segura Malandro", and "Jesualda". Magical work from this amazing duo – the lovely Bet.e & Stef, a Candian pair with a wonderful Brazilian sound, clearly destined for stardom! Imagine all the best bits of the 60s recordings by Astrud and Joao Gilberto, filtered through the best early work of Tracey Thorn or Sade, handled with a stripped-down indie sound – and you've still only got part of the picture! The CD's really great – a very fresh breath of air in a world of fake music, stepping out with an honest quality that's quite inspiring, and done with a depth of soul that shows that we're only at the beginning of the great music we'll be able to hear from this incredible pair! Philips (Holland), 1982. Very Good- ... $6.99
A great little live set from Maria Bethania – one recorded with the lighter, looser sound she was using in the early 80s – and which stands as a nice contrast to her more dramatic concert performances of the 70s! The music director for the show is Gilberto Gil, and there's a bit of the warmer overtones that Gil was using in his own music at the time – not really the soulful modes, but stronger use of electric keyboards and flowing rhythms that bring in a bit of jazz and a nice sense of fullness. Titles include "Prenda", "Luzes De Ribalta", "Gas Neon", "O Que E O Que E", "Cantico Negro", "Cancao Da Volta", "De Noite E De Dia", and "Nossos Momentos". LP, Vinyl record album

Mario BiondiBrasil (with bonus track) ... CD
Sony (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic new setting for the magnificent voice of Mario Biondi – a set that has the Italian crooner working alongside co-producer Kassin – who helps give Mario this very groovy take on Brazilian music! The style is mostly upbeat and soulful – a bit like the grooves on early albums by Ed Motta – but there's also plenty of the inventive touches we love in the music of Kassin – a great balance that keeps things from ever sounding too commercial, even though the songs are all pretty darn catchy! Biondi sings in both English and Portuguese – and although the whole album is a real change from his jazz-based work, it's completely delightful – and we hope the start of more music like this! Titles include "Take Me To The Stars", "Devotion", "Upside Down", "Sophia", "It's You I'll Always Love", "Luiza", "Mundo Coloridao", and a version of "Smooth Operator" with guest work by Till Bronner! The debut of a legend – Chico Buarque's first album for RGE, and a groundbreaking batch of tunes that helped shape the sound of popular music in Brazil for years to come! Buarque predates the Tropicalia era, but is working here in a style that clearly allowed for their later impact – a mode that draws on styles from bossa, folklore, and samba – but which somehow manages to rise into a groove that's all its own. Buarque's genius can immediately be summed up in classics on the set – like "Pedro Pedreiro", "A Rita", "Tem Mais Samba", "A Banda", and "Ole Ola" – all wonderful numbers that make the album an essential one in any collection! Chico Buarque's fourth album – a mainstream Brazilian success at the time, but a record that's still as great as any of the more experimental sides from the period! Buarque has a sense of timing and charm here that are undeniable – an approach to the music that's aware of all the youthful inventions of the 60s, but which moves it to a much more sophisticated level, one that's especially touched by some of the European greats of the era. Backings range from simple samba to larger strings – and Chico's voice is incredible – with a slight rasp that would go on to influence a generation of popular Brazilian singers in years to come! A fantastic illustration of the live music tradition on Brazil – one that really arose on records during the 60s, and blossomed strongly on 70s records like this – which feel almost more like an event than a recorded document! The concert features a magnificent meeting of Chico Buarque and Maria Bethania – both very strong talents on their own, balanced in this really great way amidst larger backings from Maestro Gaya – duetting on tunes that really turn into something special from their performance – never a challenge of egos, but instead a wonderful folding of strong ideals. Terra Trio provide the rhythms – and most numbers are Buarque originals – with titles that include "Flor Da Idade", "Vai Levando", "Bem Querer", "Noite Dos Mascarados", "Tanto Mar", "Gota D'Agua", "Com Acucar E Com Afeto", and "Sem Fantasia". Columbia/Polysom (Brazil), 1968. Sealed ... $16.99
A really compelling record from Erasmo Carlos – recorded in that crucial Brazilian music year of 1968! At some level, the record's got the crossover pop modes of Carlos from earlier in his career – but as you might guess from the cover, there's also some occasional deeper ideas going on too – especially on some of the rhythms, which move along in that blend of funky and baroque styles that were coming into play during the best of the EMI/Odeon sessions of the time. Arrangements are by Os Tremendoes on about half the record, and they do a great job – and others are by Laercio De Freitas and Vicente Salivia – all of whom really move Carlos past the simpler sounds of the jovem guarda years. Titles include a nice take on the haunting Tim Maia tune "Nao Quero Nem Saber" – plus "Senhor Aqui Estou", "Mil Bikinis", "Todas As Mulheres Do Mundo", "Baby Baby", "A Proxima Danca", "Para O Diabo Os Conselhos De Voces", and "Vou Chorar Vou Chorar Vou Chorar". A unique British session from bossa maestro Mario Castro-Neves – one that's got the same sweet and jazzy touches as his 60s records, but a slightly different feel as well! The style here is totally great – kind of the same maturation of sound that Sergio Mendes was hitting in the early 70s – thanks to the right placement of a few electric elements, and a generally warm style of production that creates a great blend of modes in Castro-Neves' music. Instrumentation features keyboards, percussion, and some larger orchestrations used in very spare and creative ways – and there's often some great electric bass bubbling along the bottom to groove things up nicely. Many tracks have wordless vocals, sung in a scatting, breezy way that's even groovier than Brasil 77 – and titles include "Macumba Mood", "The Whole Mess", "Xaxado Blues", "Call Me Up", "Helena & I", "Hold My Hand", and "Loud & Clear". Really mindblowing work from legendary drummer Ivan "Mamao" Conti – a key part of Azymuth through that group's many years – and still going strong here as a solo artist on his own! The album's almost a 21st Century realization of the sound that Azymuth was going for back in the day – cascading percussion with plenty of influences from Brazilian music and jazz, often given some electric elements along the way – but always in a style that's warmly organic, and right on the groove! Conti gets help from younger Azymuth and Incognito generations – as Alex Malherios plays bass on the record and Daniel Maunick handles keyboards, more percussion, and production – all at a level that never stomps on Ivan's vision at all – and which instead makes the whole thing as rewarding as any Azymuth session we've heard over the past few decades. One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". The whole thing's incredibly beautiful – and it's got Gal in a wild bikini cover, too! CD
