Roberto Menescal & OthersPure Bossa Nova – A View On The Music Of Roberto Menescal ... CD
Universal, 1960s/1970s. Used ... $6.99
Although not as well-known in the US as Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Roberto Menescal had an undeniable influence on the sound and growth of bossa nova in the 60s – not only through his own recordings, but also from his wonderful talents as a composer and arranger! This tasty little set really gives Menescal his due – and presents key recordings by Roberto's own small combo of the 60s, plus other later interpretations of his work by other singers. 14 tracks in all – including "A Morte De Um Deus De Sal", "Rio", "Nos E O Mar", and "Voce" by Menescal himself – plus "Vagamente" by Sylvia Telles, "Errinho A Toa" by Lelia Pinheiro, "Moca Da Praia" by Lucio Alves, "Ah Se Eu Pudesse" by Tamba Trio, and "A Volta" by Marcia. CuruminJapan Pop Show ... CD
YB Music (Brazil), 2008. Used ... $4.99
Brazilian funk from Curumin – a contemporary set, but one that features a fair bit of old school influences as well! In a way, Curumin's music is sort of an update of the 70s samba soul sound with a bit more beats – taking the older Brazilian styles into a 21st Century range, and dropping in some surprising sounds and careful touches that really make the set sparkle! There's hardly a feel of gimmick here – especially once you get past the first track or two – and we're surprised at the depth of the music, as Curumin seems to be working here with even more sensitivity than before. Guests include Marku Ribas, Lucas Santtana, and Blackalicious – and titles include "Compacto", "Kyoto", "Dancando No Escuro", "Magrela Fever", "Caixa Preta", "Saida Bangu", "Misterio Stereo", "Mal Eestar Card", and "Sambito". Airto & Flora PurimAirto Moreira & Flora Purim – Live At Jazzfest Bremen 1988 ... CD
Made In Germany (Germany), 1988. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A later live set from the legendary Brazilian duo of Flora Purim on vocals and Airto on percussion – but a set that's every bit as strong as some of the best work they cut together in the 70s! The vibe here is nice and lean – as the group's just a quintet, with Gary Meek on tenor, Robert Harrison on bass, and Marcos Silva on some great keyboards – which leap, soar, and swell along with Flora's wonderful vocals – spun out in that mix of scatting, vocalese, and lyricism that's always made her such a dynamic, important artist in the history of both jazz and Brazilian music. Titles include "Garimpo", "Dona Olimpia", "Colo De Rio", "Fancy Talk", "Brazilian People", "I'll Be Here", "Struck By Lighting", and "Improvisation No 1 & 2". CD

A great recent live set by one of the founding fathers of bossa nova! Alf actually predated most of the bossa stars, and began his career as a romantic singer/pianist in the 50s – but the strength of his body of work has always been his bossa compositions, many of which are nicely reprised in this recent live set, recorded to celebrate Alf's 40th anniversary of working with the music. Backing is by a small combo, with sax, bass, and drums backing up Alf's piano. Titles include "Plexus", "Ilusao A Toa", "Oxum", "O Grande Amor", "E Ai?", and "Eu E A Brisa". CD

Capitol (Japan), 1962. New Copy ... $13.99
A sweet little album from Laurindo Almeida and his "Bossa Nova All Stars" – not a group of Brazilian musicians, and instead a hip set of LA players who really help make the set sparkle! There's a bit more jazz here than on some of Laurindo's other Capitol records of the time – a great 60s update to the groove he first forged in the 50s with Bud Shank – featuring even more swinging rhythms, inventive instrumentation, and a slightly larger group with players who include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Howard Roberts on guitar, Bob Cooper on tenor, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Justin Gordon on flute, and Shelly Manne, Chico Guerrero, and Milt Holland on percussion! The use of organ is especially nice – a warm wave of sound on top of some great bossa rhythms – and titles include "Naked City Theme", "Teach Me Tonight", "Desafinado", "Mr Lucky", "Theme From Route 66", and "One Note Samba". Bento AraujoLindo Sonho Delirante Vol 3 – 100 Fearless Records From Brazil 1986 to 2000 ... Book
Poeira Zine (Brazil), 2021. New Copy ... $34.99 39.00
Author Bento Araujo has given us previous examinations of crucial Brazilian records in the 60s and 70s – and this important third volume shows just how strongly the spirit of experimentation continued well into the 21st Century – as the CD era opened up new frontiers for sonic exploration, and Brazilian artists moved far past the familiar styles of the past! Given that much of this music has not been reissued over the years, the volume is maybe even more important than the previous two – and like those, it presents page-by-page listing of records – with a full page reproduction of the cover art, listings of tracks and titles, other details, and a page of notes on each record in both English and Portuguese. There's plenty of titles here that we're betting you don't have in your record collection – and the book is a great guide to digging much deeper into the wealth of amazing sounds from Brazil. 229 pages, softcover, full color throughout. Mariana AydarCavaleiro Selvagem Aqui Te Sigo ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2011. Used ... $6.99
Mariana Aydar's really blowing our mind since the last time we heard her on record – stepping forth here with her deepest, most complex material ever – an album as rich in sounds and styles as some of our favorite Brazilian material from the 70s! There's this confidence to the presentation that's completely genre-transcendent – that feel of making new musical space we loved in the Tropicalia era, and the MPB generation of the 70s – a mode that few other Brazilian singers, especially female ones, can match this well these days. The record speaks volumes on its own – so much so that we'd be daft to try to pin it down with just a few words – but we can definitely say that once you hang on for the ride, Mariana got plenty of places to take you through the course of the set. Titles include a great remake of "Nine Out Of Ten", plus "Galope Rasante", "Floresta", "A Saga Do Cavaleiro", "Solitude", "Vinheta Da Alegria", "Cavaleiro Selvagem", and "Porto". CD

Banda Black RioSuper Nova Samba Funk ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A brilliant new vision for the legendary Banda Black Rio – the pioneering samba, soul and funk combo that broke so much ground in the 70s and remain vital to this day – led here by William Magalhaes, in a mode that celebrates decades of the best Brazilian music, while fearlessly moving it forward! William's father Oberdan Magalhaes was a driving force behind the original Banda Black Rio, and we couldn't really imagine a more appropriate new vision for the group than his son's. William wrote or co-wrote each track and he sings, plays keys and synth, guitar, bass, drums and more. The expansive group brings a depth of percussion, horns, strings and vocals – delivering timeless and dexterous jazzy Brazilian funk and dancefloor soul. The guest list includes classic and contemporary greats like Seu Jorge, Elza Soares, Marcio Local, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and others! Includes "Louis Lane" with Seu Jorge & Mano Brown, "Super Nova Samba Funk (9 No Samba)", "America Do Sul", "Isabela" feat Elza Soares and Cesar Camargo Mariano, "Samba Nova", "Quem Vem La" feat Marcio Local, "Deixa Estar" feat Aleh, "Lindos Olhos" feat Seu Jorge and Don Pixote, "Paname" feat Pyroman, "Final Feliz", "Irere" feat Gilberto Gil, "Aos Pes Do Redentor" feat Caetano Veloso and more. 16 tracks on the CD version. ✨✧ Maria Bethania25 Anos ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... $13.99
A beautiful tribute to 25 years in Brazilian music by Maria Bethania – and a record that's easily one of her greatest efforts from later years! The album's something of an all-star effort – with guest vocals from Nina Simone, Joao Gilberto, Gal Costa, and others – and tremendous instrumentation from Wagner Tiso, Hermeto Pascoal, Jaime Alem, Sivuca, and Jose Roberto Bertrami – all of whom help to give the record a sense of majesty that matches Bethania's tremendous vocals. There's none of the overwrought "tour de force" quality going on here – and instead, the guests all make relatively restrained contributions – always letting Maria keep center stage, in a way that shows their support simply, and subtly. Titles include "Quase", "Maria/Linda Flor", "Tomara", "Flor De Lr Embora", "Awo/Inhansa", "Palavra/Apesar De Voce", "Tocando Em Frendte", and "Logrador". CD

✨✧ Maria BethaniaAlibi ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99
Strong work by Maria Bethania from the late 70s – a session that has her tightening up her sound a bit more than before, but without any loss of her sense of drama or emotion! The album was recorded with a number of different musical backgrounds, including many small group settings with guitar by Rosinha De Valenca – an artist we love on her own, and who adds in a nicely personal touch to this album's mix of strings, keyboards, and rootsier percussion. The guitar works nicely with Maria's voice, and is perhaps second in the mix behind her singing – giving the songs a nice focus even when the backings are quite large. Songs are a mix of tunes by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and other likely suspects – and titles include "Calice", "Interior", "De Todas As Maneiras", "O Meu Amor", "Ronda", and "Diamante Verdadeiro". Ropeadope, 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A set recorded in Brooklyn, but one with plenty of Brazilian spirit in the music – served up in a mix of English and Portuguese lyrics, with a breathy sort of charm that really takes us back to the 60s! The album's more jazz vocals than bossa nova, but definitely has some of the latter – and the group features Piano and Rhodes from Vitor Goncalves, trumpet from Michael Leonhart, and guitar from Jake Owen – who moves between acoustic and electric to give the songs just the right vibe. Alexia sings wonderfully – with the sort of patience that allows a tune to develop in the right way – ala Astrud Gilberto at her best – and tracks include "Mais Devagar", "Grao", "Even Now", "Fim De Sonho", "Serpente", "Floating Away", and "Evergreen" – plus one Japanese track as well. Victor Assis BrasilEsperanto/Victor Assis Brasil Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Quartin/Far Out (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A fantastic double-length set – two full albums of music, essential for any fan of Brazilian jazz – or even jazz in general! First up is Esperanto – an incredible album from one of Brazil's greatest reed players of the 70s – the mighty Victor Assis Brasil – a free-thinking spirit who really took Brazilian jazz in bold new directions at the time! The record shows Victor absorbing a lot of post-Coltrane influences, and blending them with a tight approach to rhythm – laid down here by Dom Salvador on piano (and organ), Edison Lobo on bass, and Edson Machando on drums. The group is completed by Helio Delmiro on guitar, and Claudio Roditi plays trumpet on one track – but the real highlight is the amazing reed work by Brasil, which is filled with soul and warmth, plus a deep sense of exploration. The whole session was put together by Roberto Quartin in 1970 – and it's still extremely fresh today. Titles include "Children", "Gingerbread Boy", "Senegal", and "Marilia". Next is Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim – a fantastic album from this legendary Brazilian saxophonist – and one that's way different than the usual instrumental reading of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim! The setting is less of a bossa-inspired one than a post-Coltrane mode – as Victor Assis Brasil blows alto sax, and a bit of soprano – on long, stretched out versions of Jobim compositions – often given a bit of modal energy, thanks to the group's strong piano and organ performances by Dom Salvador. The rest of the players are all great, too – Helio Delmiro on guitar, Edson Lobo on bass, and Edison Machado on drums – all players who grew up in the bossa jazz years of the 60s, but who here are set free to explore new territory by producer Roberto Quartin. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Bonita", "Wave", "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce", and "Dindi". CD also features two bonus tracks – alternate takes of "Ao Amigo Quartin" and "Marilla". Metro Blue, 1998. Used ... $3.99
Surprisingly catchy batch of modern funky Brazilian tracks from Carlinhos Brown, set off on what appears to be an incredibly well-reviewed solo career, after working with the group Timbalada. The session was produced by Marisa Monte, and it's got a nice mix of funky stylings, Brazilian rhythms, and psychedelicate guitars – with a style that almost evokes other current "timeless" production, such as that used with Lenny Kravitz. Add some strings into the mix, and you've got a sound that's filled with a lot more surprises and nice moments than we'd expect! Titles include "Omlete Man", "Vitamina Ser", "Soul By Soul", "Water My Girl", "Tribal United Dance", "Cachorro Louco", and "Musico". CD

Philips/Universal (Brazil), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $54.99 79.99
Genius work from Chico Buarque – one of his most complicated, sophisticated, and fully-realized albums – a great summation of all the brilliance he'd already brought to Brazilian music – moved forward into new territory for the 70s! The album's of the same vintage as the more experimental Construcao album, but has a much more subtle approach – a larger production spearheaded with Roberto Menescal, and given some backings that almost match the majesty of Edu Lobo's work at the same time – inflections from jazzy sources, but taken to other places in a rich tapestry of sound – over which Buarque's vocals float with a sense of grace and power that's simply amazing. A fantastic live follow-up to the Caravanas album by Chico Buarque – and done at a similar level that shows that Chico's lost none of his charms as the years go by! The set's got the man upfront, singing and playing acoustic guitar – with a combo behind him, kicking up the rhythms in a great way – maybe with a bit more force than on the studio album, as Chico and the group run through an extended lineup of songs that's really great all the way through! The whole thing's a fantastic reminder of the way that Brazilian culture never lets go of its musicians, even as they age – and the musicians themselves continue to grow great as they mature, only rewarding the culture with great gifts like this in the process. Titles include "Casualmente", "Minha Embaixanda Chegou Mambembe", "Dueto", "Injuriado", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "Tua Cantiga", "Sabia", "A Historia De Lilly Braun A Bela E A Fera", "Gota D'Agua", and "Geni E O Zepelim". BMG/RCA (Brazil), 1990. Used ... $5.99
Live work by Chico Buarque – a surprisingly nice set overall, and a great demonstration of the way the energy of his live albums almost took over force from his studio sets at this point in his career! The double-length performance features some great musical direction from Cristovao Bastos – and mixes together some of Chico's more upbeat modes with other tunes that have a moodier feel, quite spare, dark, and somber – touching on a side of Chico that's not always heard in studio work from the time! Titles include "Vai Passar", "O Que Sera", "Joao E Maria", "Rio 42", "Todo O Sentimento", "Partido Alto", "Desalento", and "A Rita". Amazing package, too – comes in a hardcover book-style jacket, with a bonus 42 page book that also includes full color images, with lots of vintage photos, plus notes on the record in Portuguese! The whole thing's sort of an update of the old Abril Cultural style of the 70s – brought into the CD generation. CD

A wonderful collection of work from Chico Buarque – one of the most important figures in Brazilian music of the past 50 years! Chico's initial recordings predated the Tropicalia generation, but along with them, he helped develop a style that continued to evolve and forever shape the sound of MPB! The set starts with Chico's earliest days, then moves up through important 70s recordings, and even goes onto later years – showing the rich depth that Chico always brought to his music. 23 tracks in all – with titles that include "Filosofia", "A Banda", "Samba De Orly", "Tatuagem", "Sem Fantasia", "Sonho De Um Carnaval", "Barbara", "Ole Ola", "Tanto Mar", "Bye Bye Brasil", and "Apesar De Voce". Sunnyside, 2015. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A truly beautiful tribute to the classic songcraft of Antonio Carlos Jobim – done with warmth, reverence and soul-stirring voice and guitar by Vinicius Cantuaria! The Tom Jobim songbook is timeless, of course, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that one of the finer Brazilian voices of a later generation could handle it, but this set is exceptionally strong! Some of the best numbers are on the spare side, with Cantuaria's voice up front in the mix, giving it an intimate quality that we love – but it also includes some wonderful musicians from both Rio and Tokyo – where the tracks were recorded – plus some nice guest guitar work by Bill Frisell on a couple tunes and a lovely duet with Joyce. Includes "Ligua", "Caminhos Cruzados" featuring Joyce, "Vivo Sonhando", "So Danco Samba", "Este Seu Ohlar", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "Felicade", "Insensatez", "Inutil Paisagem", "Voce Vai Ver", "Por Causa De Voce" and more. 13 in all. The album's like the sort of great fusion we used to hear from the European scene 20 years back – a combo who clearly love the classic styles of Brazilian music, but also come up with something very new, and very much their own – with lots of jazzy live instrumentation, and work on acoustic guitar, percussion, and Fender Rhodes as part of the standout elements in the mix. Elizete CardosoCancao Do Amor Demais ... CD
Festa (Brazil), 1958. Used ... $18.99
A beautiful early album by Elizete Cardoso – arguably one of the first bossa nova records ever, and a set that features some great early tracks penned by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes! The record is a haunting showcase for the genius of Jobim and Vinicius, and it includes early recordings of many many tracks that have now become bossa standards – like "Chega De Saudade", "Outra Vez", "Modinha", "Janelas Abertas", and "Cancao Do Amor Demais". The orchestrations are beautiful – arranged by Jobim, who also plays piano – and featuring a bit of guitar from Joao Gilberto, amidst flute, trombone, trumpet, and a bit of strings. Elizete's voice is richer and more emotional than that of most of the later bossa divas – and the record is a key link in a number of Brazilian musical traditions! CD

This set has a nicely lean vibe – the best Elenco Records style, served up with Jobim's sense of space and timing – as a perfect match for the vocals of Caymmi, who maybe sounds his best in this mode! There's lots of jazzy instrumentation on the set too – including great work on flute from Danilio Caymmi and guitar from the young Dori Caymmi – both soon to become big talents on their own. Titles include "Abrace Paul McCartney", "Fotograma", "Adeus Batucada", "To Be", "David", "Durango Kid", "Zozoio Como E Que E", and "Lennon McCartney". LP, Vinyl record album

Ivan Mamao ContiPoison Fruit ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
Really mindblowing work from legendary drummer Ivan "Mamao" Conti – a key part of Azymuth through that group's many years – and still going strong here as a solo artist on his own! The album's almost a 21st Century realization of the sound that Azymuth was going for back in the day – cascading percussion with plenty of influences from Brazilian music and jazz, often given some electric elements along the way – but always in a style that's warmly organic, and right on the groove! Conti gets help from younger Azymuth and Incognito generations – as Alex Malherios plays bass on the record and Daniel Maunick handles keyboards, more percussion, and production – all at a level that never stomps on Ivan's vision at all – and which instead makes the whole thing as rewarding as any Azymuth session we've heard over the past few decades. Most tracks are instrumental, save for some airy wordless vocals – but Thiago Martins sings lead on "Que Legal", and other titles include "Aroeira", "Bacurau", "Poison Fruit", "Jemburi", "Ecos Da Mata", "Encontro", and "Tempestades". CD features bonus mixes – "Ilha Da Luz (Tenderlonius rmx)", "Encontro (Glenn Astro rmx)", "Que Legal (Reginald Omas Mamode IV rmx)", "Encontro (Max Graef rmx)", and "Poison Fruit (Dokta Venom's digital dub rmx)". Lula CortesRosa De Sangue (LP sleve edition) ... CD
Rozenblit/Time Lag Records, 1980. Used ... $6.99
The final chapter of Lula Cortes amazing run of music in 70s Brazil – a small label release that brilliantly blends together a range of psychedelic influences – all with a gritty edge that's quite different than what you might expect from the date of the album! Things here are every bit as tripped out as on some of Lula's other albums from years before – trippily poetic, occasionally folksy, and sometimes touched with heavier electric moments that really offset the gentler, more organic moments. The reissue features full notes on the music by Cortes himself – and the package offers a rare chance to hear an album whose original pressing was supposedly destroyed before it was ever released! Really great sound, and a lovely package that more than lives up to Lula's amazing music. CD

Gal CostaEstratosferica ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2015. Used ... $12.99
Gal Costa looks surpisingly youthful on the cover – and she's also sounding more youthful in her music than we've heard in many years – thanks to a key collaboration with Kassin and Moreno Veloso! Both of the younger musicians really find a fresh space for Gal to work with – a nice shift away from some of the more staid, mature modes of her other recent records – and a style that brings out all the creativity that made us fall in love with Costa so many years ago! This shift isn't a return to Tropicalia, but instead a move towards that playful, genre-stepping territory that you'll find in both Veloso and Kassin's music, especially the latter. One of Costa's best in years – and with titles that include "Amor Se Aclame", "Anuviar", "Espelho D'Agua", "Ecstasy", "Jabitaca", and "Sem Medo Nem Esperanca". CD

Gal CostaIndia ... CD
Philips/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". The whole thing's incredibly beautiful – and it's got Gal in a wild bikini cover, too! CD
