PapeteBerimbau E Percussao – Music & Rhythms Of Brasil ... CD
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s-Early 80s. Used ... $24.99
Great stuff! This is Soul Jazz's compilation of the beautiful music of the Brazilian percussionist Papete. The work here spans a wide range of styles, but like all the Soul Jazz comps, it's put together in a fantastic way that spins and swirls through an amazing mix of music. Some cuts have a strident jazzy feel to them, like the album's great cover of "Ponteio", while others are much more stripped down and folkloric sounding. Never a dull moment, and Papete plays a range of instruments – from drums, to cuica, to tamborim, to marimbas – and a whole lot more! If you like some of Airto's stuff, or if you were one of the many who've bought the Quarteto Novo LP from us – you'll love this one! CD

Mario AdnetJobim Jazz ... CD
Adventure Music, 2007. Used ... $8.99
Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... CD
Atoll Music (France), 1967. Used ... $39.99
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Lisa OnoBrasil ... CD
Dream Music (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... $23.99
Lovely work from Lisa Ono – one of the first singers of the modern age to return to the genius of 60s bossa, and one of the few to keep getting it right over the years! Here, Lisa sings with studio help from Mario Adnet – that great contemporary bossa talent who's got a key ear for updating instrumentation without ever losing the charm of the past – keeping things live, spontaneous, and with just the right current of sadness – but all without ever just aping the styles of the 60s either. Lisa's voice is wonderful – maybe even better here than on her earlier records – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Roda", "Mas Que Nada", "O Cantador", "Lapinha", "Tim Dom Dom", "Sa Marina", "Bossa Na Praia", and "Chove Chuva". ✨✧ Moacir SantosChoros & Alegria ... CD
Adventure Music, 2005. Used ... $8.99
The first full album in years from the legendary Moacir Santos – and a beautiful little album that's filled with all the deep feeling and inventive arrangement of his older work! As the title might imply, the set borrows song structure and spirit from the Brazilian choro tradition – reworked here by Santos with his angular approach to rhythm and jazzy approach to instrumentation – so that the tunes slide warmly into one another, moving with a fluid, organic sense that we really like a lot. For the sessions, Santos pulled together a host of jazz and more traditional musicians – blending modes nicely to further enforce the creative spirit of the session, and mostly focusing on the instrumentation, but also occasionally offering a nice vocal as well. Titles are all originals, written over the course of Santos' lifetime – and titles include "Paraiso", "Outra Coisa", "Agora Eu Sei", "Ricaom", "Saudade De Jacques", "Cleonix", "Felipe", "Carroussel", and "Samba Diamante". A BolhaUm Passo A Frente (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... $14.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". CD is beautifully done – with full notes in the great Lion tradition – and bonus tracks that include "Sem Nada" and "18.30 Parte 1". (Rock, Brazil) CD

✨✧ AirtoSeeds On The Ground – The Natural Sounds Of Airto (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Buddah/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 32.99
Easily one of the greatest records that Brazilian percussionist Airto ever recorded – a stunning blend roots and jazzy currents, and a set that follows strongly off his work in the group Quarteto Novo! The set's got contributions from one of his key partners in that combo – reedman Hermeto Pascoal – and like Pascoal's material at this point, the whole thing is maybe one of the most perfect realizations of the musical vision that Airto was going for! There's none of the tighter, more polished sounds of his later fusion years – and this is the record that will show you just why his arrival on the American scene made such big waves at the time. Flora Purim also sings on the record – and titles include "Andei", "On Sonho", Papo Furado", and "O Galho da Rosiera". LP, Vinyl record album

AzymuthOutubro (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Wicked early work from Azymuth – one of the albums that the group recorded when they were really starting to take off on the global scene – burning strong with a soulful fusion vibe, lots of Brazilian rhythm currents, and always hitting all the right notes in their music! The sound here is still relatively spare, and sublimely reliant on the keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami – who plays Fender Rhodes, organ, and percussion on the set. Ivan Conti handles the main percussion, though – a great mix of tight work on the drum kit and rootsier, Airto-like elements that are totally great – and the whole thing's driven along nicely by bass and guitar from Alex Malheiros – a perfectly fused lineup that really hits their own groove on the set. Guests include Aleuda on percussion and vocals, Gordinho on surdo, and Doto on repinique – and titles include "Papasong", "Outubro", "Maracana", "Un Amigo", "Carta Pro Airto", and "Dear Limmertz". Maria BethaniaCiclo ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1983. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A nicely rootsy little album from Maria Bethania – recorded during a period when some of her music could often sound much fuller and more electric! The album's got subtle help from Toninho Horta, Dori Caymmi, and Guto Graca Mello – all of whom arrange Maria's vocals in a sophisticated singer/songwriter sort of mode – very personal, often spare, and used with a sensitivity to the lyrics that's really wonderful. The Terra Trio also play on the record, and titles include "Ciclo", "Filosofia Pura", "Motriz", "Vinho", "Lua", "Cantar Pra Fazer O Sol Adormecer", and "Rio De Janeiro". LP, Vinyl record album

Leonardo V BocciaHomenagem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lugar Alto (Brazil), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". Bruno ESao Paulo Jazz Rebels ... CD
Tratore (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Bruno E sounds fantastic here, and very different than the broken beat maestro we loved on his records from the early part of this century – as Bruno's moved into a much warmer jazz-based environment, and plays acoustic bass here with a very hip little combo! Most of the tracks are instrumental, and the group has trumpet, tenor, and trombone – all used with the rhythms in a way that's rooted in soul jazz, but which moves to sparkle with some of the more contemporary tones of club jazz groups from the Italian, Japanese, and Scandinavian scene – although the focus here isn't entirely on grooves, but on the richer feel of the music. Bruno also sings on a few cuts too – in English, which is great – with these mature, poetic lyrics that are unlike anything else he's ever given us – just one more great aspect of this really wonderful record! Titles include "Backstage Jazz", "Rua Artur Prado", "We Hostel", "At Jazz It Up", "O Do Borogodo", "Vegas", and "Av Paulista". CD

Chico BuarqueChico Buarque De Hollanda Vol 1 ... LP
RGE/Audio Clarity (UK), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The debut of a legend – Chico Buarque's first album for RGE, and a groundbreaking batch of tunes that helped shape the sound of popular music in Brazil for years to come! Buarque predates the Tropicalia era, but is working here in a style that clearly allowed for their later impact – a mode that draws on styles from bossa, folklore, and samba – but which somehow manages to rise into a groove that's all its own. Buarque's genius can immediately be summed up in classics on the set – like "Pedro Pedreiro", "A Rita", "Tem Mais Samba", "A Banda", and "Ole Ola" – all wonderful numbers that make the album an essential one in any collection! Chico BuarqueChico Buarque De Hollanda Vol 4 ... CD
Philips (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $24.99
Chico Buarque's fourth album – a mainstream Brazilian success at the time, but a record that's still as great as any of the more experimental sides from the time! Buarque has a sense of timing and charm here that are undeniable – an approach to the music that's aware of all the youthful inventions of the 60s, but which moves it to a much more sophisticated level, one that's especially touched by some of the European greats of the era. Backings range from simple samba to larger strings – and Chico's voice is incredible – with a slight rasp that would go on to influence a generation of popular Brazilian singers in years to come! Titles include "Rosa Dos Ventos", "Samba E Amor", "Pois E", "Cara A Cara", "Nao Fala De Maria", and "Gente Humilde". CD

Chico Buarque/Nara Leao/Maria BethaniaQuando O Carnaval Chegar ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1972. Used ... $16.99
A fantastic soundtrack recorded in the immediate post-Tropicalia years – featuring some of the best early 70s work by Chico Buarque, Nara Leao, Maria Bethania, and others! The cover has a mad image with Buarque, Leao, and Bethania in top hats and shiny uniforms – and the music follows up with a similarly lively spirit – samba-esque, with other touches of rock and jazz production that give the work an expansive and trippy feel. Roberto Menescal handled the arrangements – and titles include "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Mais Uma Estrela" by Nara Leao, "Soneto" by Orquesta De Cordas, "Soneto" by Nara Leao, "Partido Alto" by MPB-4, "Formosa" by Nara Leao & Maria Bethania, "Baioque" by Maria Bethania, and "Cantores De Radio" by Chico, Naria, and Maria together! Mario Castro-NevesBrazilian Mood ... LP
Phase 4 (UK), 1973. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A unique British session from bossa maestro Mario Castro-Neves – one that's got the same sweet and jazzy touches as his 60s records, but a slightly different feel as well! The style here is totally great – kind of the same maturation of sound that Sergio Mendes was hitting in the early 70s – thanks to the right placement of a few electric elements, and a generally warm style of production that creates a great blend of modes in Castro-Neves' music. Instrumentation features keyboards, percussion, and some larger orchestrations used in very spare and creative ways – and there's often some great electric bass bubbling along the bottom to groove things up nicely. Many tracks have wordless vocals, sung in a scatting, breezy way that's even groovier than Brasil 77 – and titles include "Macumba Mood", "The Whole Mess", "Xaxado Blues", "Call Me Up", "Helena & I", "Hold My Hand", and "Loud & Clear". Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
This isn't the first time that vibist Erik Charlston has paid tribute to the music of Hermeto Pascoal – but the set's definitely a cooker that lives up to the strong legacy of Brazilian music and jazz that we've always loved in Hermeto's creations! Songs are mostly by Pascoal, but the set also includes tunes by Egberto Gismonti and Lenine too – all transformed in the fresh, original arrangements by Erik – who plays vibes and marimba, and even sings a bit on one track – in a group that includes Ted Nash on saxes and flute, Mark Soskin on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and Rogerio Boccato on drums and percussion. Titles include "Voz E Vento", "Loro", "Nem Um Talvez", "Alegria Do Vaquerio", "A Gandaia Das Ondas/Pedra E Areia", "Aquela Coisa", and "A Fala Da Paixao". (Jazz, Brazil) CD

The clarinets and other woodwinds give things a mature set of tones and colors – and titles include "Cantiga Para Yara Dormir E Sonhar", "Nos Irracionais", "A Cumplice", "Cantata Para A Condessa Alessandra", "Que Saudade", and "Por Quem Sonha Ana Maria". Artezanal/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", "Unknown Song For Mario Telles", "Manha", "Duro De Roer", "Quem Tem Medo", "Juntos Mais Uma Vez", and "Bateria Do Mamao".
