VariousBrazil USA 70 – Brazilian Music In The USA In The 1970s ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Fantastic grooves from the 70s – tracks that are part of a great second wave of Brazilian music to hit our shores, then take off in a whole new direction! The US was no stranger to Brazilian sounds in the 60s – given the popularity of bossa nova and a few other styles – but as the 70s approached, a new generation of artists started to hit the American scene – often with richer, more sophisticated ideas that built on older bossa and samba modes, then combined them with new approaches to jazz, funk, and soul! This killer set presents a perfect portrait of that time – mixing familiar names with newcomers, or Brazilian recording artists with American studio talents – all in a batch of cuts that still stand as some of our favorite Brazilian grooves of all time – even if they didn't come from Rio or Sao Paulo. Titles include "Bahia Soul" by Luiz Bonfa, "Catavento" by Milton Nascimento, "Ain't No Sunshine" by Sivuca, "Braun Blek Blu" by Dom Um Romao, "Skyscrapers" by Deodato, "Sandalia Delia" by Duke Pearson with Flora Purim, "Samba De Flora" by Airto, "Consolacao" by Tamba 4, "Moon Dreams" by Flor Purim, "Andei" by Airto, "Almas Irmas" by Joao Donato, "Kathy" by Moacir Santos, "Tombo In 7/4" by Airto, "Rio Vermelho" by Milton Nascimento, and "Escravos De Jo" by Dom Um Romao. Lisa OnoBrasil ... CD
Dream Music (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... $32.99
Lovely work from Lisa Ono – one of the first singers of the modern age to return to the genius of 60s bossa, and one of the few to keep getting it right over the years! Here, Lisa sings with studio help from Mario Adnet – that great contemporary bossa talent who's got a key ear for updating instrumentation without ever losing the charm of the past – keeping things live, spontaneous, and with just the right current of sadness – but all without ever just aping the styles of the 60s either. Lisa's voice is wonderful – maybe even better here than on her earlier records – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Roda", "Mas Que Nada", "O Cantador", "Lapinha", "Tim Dom Dom", "Sa Marina", "Bossa Na Praia", and "Chove Chuva". Oneyda AlvarengaSongs & Dances Of Brazil ... CD
Folkways, 1956. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Not the usual sorts of Brazilian songs that you might expect – no tight samba or bossa, but instead a batch of rootsy music from Bahia – all with rhythmic qualities that strongly inspired both later genres! Percussion is the strongest element on most of these tunes, but there's also some sharp stringed instrumental lines too – similar to cavaquinho in samba, or guitar in bossa – all topped with vocals from Oneyda Alvarenga – who almost seems to blow the microphone into the red with the intensity she brings to some of the performances. The whole set was recorded in Mar Grande, Itaparica – and titles include "O Embole Embole", "Samba Urbano", "Marcha Larga", "E Foi A Vaca", "Pena Verde", "Embolada", "A Tempo De Samba", and "Movemento De Marcha". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Banda Black RioO Som Das Americas ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
Contemporary work from Banda Black Rio – the legendary Brazilian funk band who gave us some really great records in the 70s! Turns out, the group still sounds great after all the passage of years – more in a modern soul mode overall, with a few more sophisticated twists and turns alongside the grooves – and a wider style overall, to make room for guests who include Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elza Soares, Cesar Camargo Mariano, and others! Think of the music as a progression from earlier Brazilian soul modes – a bit in the way that early Ed Motta work was a step forward from the generation of Tim Maia – and amidst the great guest vocal work, there's also plenty of sharp instrumentation. Titles include "Arthur E O Gigante", "America Do Sul", "Labirintos", "Rir E Chorar", "Isabela", "Aos Pes Do Redentor", "Vento Leva", "Aguas Sabias", "Bossa Da Praia", and "Nove No Samba". CD

Bet.e & StefJazz/Bossa Nova ... LP
Bet.e & Stef Records/Return To Analog (Canada), 1997. New Copy ... $22.99
A beautiful selection of early work by the Candian bossa duo of Bet.e & Stef – a great team that makes some really musical magic together – with a vibe that's quite different than anything you might expect from the Great White North! The feel here is like perfect 60s bossa – light Astrud Gilberto-styled vocals, gentle Joao Gilberto-type guitar, and some straighter jazz elements that bring a bit of swing into the mix. Titles are a mix of standards and bossa classics – all done in a stripped-down, honest style – and titles include "Fever", "So Danco Samba", "Boomerang Baby", "I Put A Spell On You", "Agua De Beber", and "Black Coffee". Lo BorgesRio Da Lua ... CD
Deck Disk (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
Fantastic work from Lo Borges – the legendary Brazilian singer that we've loved since his first "corner club" work with Milton Nascimento in the 70s – and who looks as if he hasn't aged a bit in the photo included with the album! Borges was always one of the strongest Brazilian songwriters of his generation – and a sophisticated, subtle singer whose approach was always just right for his words – an approach that hasn't changed a bit, as Lo works here with older musical partner Nelson Angelo, whose help was so important on his first self-titled album from 1972! Backing is by a small group, nicely under-produced – and all songs are originals by Borges and Angelo, with titles that include "Rio Da Lua", "Profeta, "No Caminho", "Em Outras Cancoes", "Foto 3 x 4", "Antes Do Tempo", and "Partimos". Bruno ESao Paulo Jazz Rebels ... CD
Tratore (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
Bruno E sounds fantastic here, and very different than the broken beat maestro we loved on his records from the early part of this century – as Bruno's moved into a much warmer jazz-based environment, and plays acoustic bass here with a very hip little combo! Most of the tracks are instrumental, and the group has trumpet, tenor, and trombone – all used with the rhythms in a way that's rooted in soul jazz, but which moves to sparkle with some of the more contemporary tones of club jazz groups from the Italian, Japanese, and Scandinavian scene – although the focus here isn't entirely on grooves, but on the richer feel of the music. Bruno also sings on a few cuts too – in English, which is great – with these mature, poetic lyrics that are unlike anything else he's ever given us – just one more great aspect of this really wonderful record! Titles include "Backstage Jazz", "Rua Artur Prado", "We Hostel", "At Jazz It Up", "O Do Borogodo", "Vegas", and "Av Paulista". CD

Mario Castro-NevesBrazilian Mood ... LP
Phase 4 (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A unique British session from bossa maestro Mario Castro-Neves – one that's got the same sweet and jazzy touches as his 60s records, but a slightly different feel as well! The style here is totally great – kind of the same maturation of sound that Sergio Mendes was hitting in the early 70s – thanks to the right placement of a few electric elements, and a generally warm style of production that creates a great blend of modes in Castro-Neves' music. Instrumentation features keyboards, percussion, and some larger orchestrations used in very spare and creative ways – and there's often some great electric bass bubbling along the bottom to groove things up nicely. Many tracks have wordless vocals, sung in a scatting, breezy way that's even groovier than Brasil 77 – and titles include "Macumba Mood", "The Whole Mess", "Xaxado Blues", "Call Me Up", "Helena & I", "Hold My Hand", and "Loud & Clear". Erik Charlston Jazz BrasilHermeto – Voice & Wind ... CD
Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
This isn't the first time that vibist Erik Charlston has paid tribute to the music of Hermeto Pascoal – but the set's definitely a cooker that lives up to the strong legacy of Brazilian music and jazz that we've always loved in Hermeto's creations! Songs are mostly by Pascoal, but the set also includes tunes by Egberto Gismonti and Lenine too – all transformed in the fresh, original arrangements by Erik – who plays vibes and marimba, and even sings a bit on one track – in a group that includes Ted Nash on saxes and flute, Mark Soskin on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and Rogerio Boccato on drums and percussion. Titles include "Voz E Vento", "Loro", "Nem Um Talvez", "Alegria Do Vaquerio", "A Gandaia Das Ondas/Pedra E Areia", "Aquela Coisa", and "A Fala Da Paixao". (Jazz, Brazil) CD

Juca ChavesJuca Bom De Camera ... CD
Som Livre/Discobertas (Brazil), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99
Juca Chaves relaxes in bed on the cover, but he's actually sounding a bit more formal throughout the album – working with great arrangements from Radames Gnatalli, always heavy on woodwinds – and with a sophisticated style that brings a lot to his music. The clarinets and other woodwinds give things a mature set of tones and colors – and titles include "Cantiga Para Yara Dormir E Sonhar", "Nos Irracionais", "A Cumplice", "Cantata Para A Condessa Alessandra", "Que Saudade", and "Por Quem Sonha Ana Maria". AirtoAlue ... CD
Sesac (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the greatest albums in years from percussion Airto Moreira – a set that really lives up to the complex sort of grooves he first brought to our shores in the 70s! Airto's back home in Brazil for this set, and working with a really great lineup – a group that's heavy on acoustic elements, and which takes the musician back to the soaring spirit of his work in Quarteto Novo, and that time when both he and Hermeto Pascoal were getting the chance to start recording in America as well! There's none of the later fusion modes going on here – and production is nice and open, very organic – really allowing a fantastic flow from the mix of percussion, flute, guitar, saxes, and piano on the tunes. Honestly, the whole thing reminds us more of the album Seeds On The Ground or Natural Forces than it does most of Airto's records in later years – and titles include "Rosa Negra", "Misturada", "Alue", "Guarany", "Sea Horse", "Lua Flora", and "Nao Sei Pra Onde Mas Vai". ✨✧ AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". A great later album from samba singer Elizeth Cardoso – one that has a sophisticated sound that really matches her maturing vocals, thanks to a nice dose of jazz in the mix! Elizeth approaches the lyrics like a grand dame of Brazilian music – with a subtle sense of majesty touched by just the right of lived experience to really make the lyrics resonate – all warmed up by these really nice arrangements from Sergio Carvalho, who also plays a bit of acoustic and electric piano on the set too. Dori Caymmi arranges in a few points with Sergio, and also plays piano – and titles include "Prezado Amigo", "Viver Por Esperar", "Velha Poeira", "O Nosso Olhar", "Olha Moco", and "Bebeco E Doca". Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
Wickedly cool work from this overlooked Brazilian singer – a record that's got a strong sense of soul in the grooves, and a great sense of imagination in the choice of songs! Celia sings early work by Joyce, Lo Borges, Nelson Angelo, and others – with these shifting arrangements from the likes of Arthur Verocai, Rogerio Duprant, and Jose Briamonte – all in a mish-mash of modes that sometimes echoes the funky styles on EMI/Odeon of the period, sometimes even hits at Tropicalia touches – especially when guitarist Elody is given full run in the music to do his thing! Titles include "Abrace Paul McCartney", "Fotograma", "Adeus Batucada", "To Be", "David", "Durango Kid", "Zozoio Como E Que E", and "Lennon McCartney". LP, Vinyl record album
