A mindblowing record from the great Ed Motta – a set that continues all the warmer, English language elements of his recent albums – but one that also seems to have Ed hitting a new sort of sophistication too! The sound is incredible – almost out-AORing all the global AOR references that Motta's given us in both his own music, and some of the great collections he's done over the years – but there's also more of a special small combo vibe, with some instrumentation on the record that seems even more compelling than usual – and which includes some great guitar moments from Ed, in addition to Fender Rhodes. Nice overstuffed "best of" compilation that features work by Veloso that spans from his early Tropicalia years to the stuff he did as a pseudo-new wave artist in the early 80s. 7 cuts alone are from the pivotal year of 1968 – including "Shy Moon", "Lua De Sao Jorge", "Superbacana", and "Soy Loco Por Ti America" – and others are from the mid and late 70s, like "Beleza Pura", "Trilhos Urbanos", "Odara", "O Leaozinho", and "Qualquer Coisa". Not all of this material is available on the other CDs we carry, and the set itself is a great way to begin to get into the work of Veloso, who we feel is one of the greatest musical artists of the late 20th century! An amazing introduction to one of the most significant cultural movements in the latter half of the 20th Century – the groundbreaking years of Tropicalia in late 60s Brazil! The music and legacy of Tropicalia are referenced often, but hardly ever presented this well – and this package is everything we could have hoped for as an introduction to the movement – filled not just with great music, but also an overwhelming amount of notes that trace the history of Brazilian music and art through their changes in relation to Tropicalia! In fact, the notes are almost worth the price of the compilation alone – very densely written over 48 pages in the CD booklet, with more information in one place than we've ever seen before. New work from Baden Powell – one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th Century! This stripped-down set features Powell in solo mode, working through new and complicated versions of some older favorites and newer gems. The intimate setting is a perfect showcase for Powell's continued growth as a guitarist – as he plays here with a style that's light years ahead of his classic work from the 60s! By the mid 70s, Elis Regina had transformed from being a simple and strong bossa singer, into one of Brazil's best-ever singers – with a complicated emotional style that ranges with some of the best work of the 20th century (and we'd include singers like Sinatra, Scott Walker, and Jacques Brel in that territory!) This "best of" set was put together by Elis' longtime compatriot Roberto Menescal, and it features some of the best moments from her massive Philips albums of the early and mid 70s. Excellent work by some of the greatest Brazilian singers and songwriters of the 70s! The material was recorded exclusively for this TV soundtrack in 1976 – and although the scope of the story stretches back to the early 20th century, the feel of most of the material is prime mid 70s MPB. Overall, this is one of the more introspective titles in this series of classic Som Livre soundtracks – as you might guess from the range of material and performers.
