Bruno BerleNo Reino Dos Afetos ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $26.99 32.99
A really lovely little record – one that feels like an instant classic in the world of MPB – the sort of long-overdue new release by a Brazilian artist that we hope we'll be hearing plenty from in years to come! As with the elite list of our Brazilian favorites of the past 20 years, Bruno's got a way of reaching into the past to grab just a bit here and there – then folds things together with a style that's crispily fresh, and very much his own – soulful, yet not mainstream soul at all – electronic at times, but with a warmly beating acoustic heart – and the kind of music that will grab you instantly upon first listen, at a level that our words could never hope to convey! Titles include "So Nois Dois", "Some Nyame", "Quero Dizer", "Ate Meu Violao", "Virginia Talk", "Sereno", "Arraiada", and "Beat 1". LP, Vinyl record album

Chico BuarqueChico Buarque De Hollanda Vol 4 ... CD
Philips (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $11.99 13.99
Chico Buarque's fourth album – a mainstream Brazilian success at the time, but a record that's still as great as any of the more experimental sides from the time! Buarque has a sense of timing and charm here that are undeniable – an approach to the music that's aware of all the youthful inventions of the 60s, but which moves it to a much more sophisticated level, one that's especially touched by some of the European greats of the era. Backings range from simple samba to larger strings – and Chico's voice is incredible – with a slight rasp that would go on to influence a generation of popular Brazilian singers in years to come! Titles include "Rosa Dos Ventos", "Samba E Amor", "Pois E", "Cara A Cara", "Nao Fala De Maria", and "Gente Humilde". CD
(2001 pressing, still sealed!)

Xenia FrancaEm Nome Das Estrela ... CD
Think (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... $22.99 28.99
Gorgeous sounds from Xenia Franca – a Brazilian soul singer with a sound and style that should make her huge, if the world has any justice – but who's also more than great enough as the kind of special discovery that keeps us searching for unusual music from around the globe! Xenia's got a voice that's incredible – every bit as rich and powerful as any American female soul singer in recent years, but set to arrangements and instrumentation that are more inventive than anything in the mainstream – and which seem to get a special sort of crispy crackle from the Portuguese in the lyrics. We loved her first album, but this one is even more amazing – with titles that include "Magica", "From The Heights", "Ancestral Infinito", "Futurivel", "Interstelar", and "Animus X Anima", which features a guest appearance from Arthur Verocai! Tribalistas (Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown, & Marisa Monte)Tribalistas ... CD
EMI, 2002. Used ... $2.99
A groundbreaking collaboration from the start of the century – the union of three of Brazil's most important artists of the decade before – coming together in a mode that's even deeper than any of their previous albums as solo acts! There's clearly a Tropicalia inspiration taking place here – but there's also rootsier elements that have the trio moving even more firmly away from the mainstream – with genre-blurring modes that are an especially strong revelation as a vehicle for Marisa Monte. Titles include "Carnavalia", "La De Longe", "O Amor E Feio", "Passe Em Casa", "Velha Infancia", and "Ja Sei Namorar". CD

✨✧ DjavanSeduzir ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spare, simple work from Djavan – the kind of soulful set that made him one of the most dramatic mainstream talents in Brazil at the start of the 80s – and one of the few of his generation to reach out to a larger global market! The album's got a very Milton Nascimento sort of vibe – Djavan's incredible vocals set over arrangements that are sophisticated, but relatively straightforward too – with bits of jazz and more baroque elements, and occasional touches of fusion as well. Most tracks are originals – beautifully penned by Djavan – and titles include "Faltando Um Pedaco", "A Ilha", "Pedro Brasil", "Seduzir", "Jogral", and "Nvula". CD

✨✧ Elis ReginaViva A Brotolandia/Poema De Amor ... CD
El (UK), 1961/1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Elis Regina – issued here on a set that brings together her first two albums in one package! The sound here is quite different than the Elis Regina sound of the 70s – a lot brighter and more youthful, without as many of the somber overtones – yet still with an undeniable charm and a sense of joy that's really amazing! Even at this young age, Elis is a tremendous interpreter of tunes – and the titles mix together bossa and pop arrangements, hitting a style that's far lighter than some of the mainstream Brazilian divas of the period. Backings are by the orchestras of Severino Filho, Renato De Oliveira, Severino Araujo, and Guerra Peixe – and the CD features 22 titles that include "Tu Seras", "Da Sorte", "Dor De Cotovelo", "Amor Amor", "Poema", "Pororo-Popo", "Confissao", "Podes Voltar", "Vou Comprar Um Coracao", and "Las Secretarias". ✨✧ AzymuthCascades/Rapid Transit ... CD
Milestone, 1982/1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublimely soulful work from Azymuth – 2 albums back to back on a single CD! Cascades is fantastic fusion from a group who just couldn't miss during these early 80s California years! The sound here is smooth, but never slick – always a little offbeat, and quite different from more mainstream US fusion of the time – thanks to the genius of Jose Roberto Bertrami's keyboards, which glide one moment, dip the next, and often have these slight changes in speed that are totally great. Other members of the core trio include Alex Malheiros on bass and guitar and Ivan Conti on drums and percussion – and the set also features guest work by Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, Jose Carlos on flute, and Sidney Moreira on percussion. Titles include "Remembering Milton", "Club Morocco", "Through The Window", "Festa Nativa", "Cascade Of The Seven Waterfalls", and "Indian Pepper". Rapid Transit is a set with a really warm groove overall – hardly the too-fast, or too-urban record you might expect from the title! Instead, there's a nicely organic sensibility going on here – a sound that feels fresh and spontaneous, even when it's in the highly electric territory of Jose Roberto Bertami's keyboards. There's a slight bit of added flute and percussion on the set, but most of the sounds here are from the core Azymuth trio – who even vocalize wordlessly on one of the album's best tracks. Titles include "Missing Doto", "Make Mine Guarana", "Gate Of Time", "I'm Just Looking Around", "Somewhere In Brazil", and "Afternoon". CD

✨✧ Luiz BonfaBrazilian Scene ... LP
Philips, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great little session from Luiz Bonfa – one that features a hip core combo mixed with slightly larger backings – all in a groove that really stands out from other mainstream bossa albums of the 60s! Bonfa's acoustic guitar is set up here with Jerome Richardson on flute, Don Payne on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sound that's lightly touched with occasional bits of strings or woodwinds from Hal Mooney – never too much to over-sweeten the music, and often in ways that underscore the bluer, sadder tones in the music. Bonfa contributed to me great original tunes to the record that really stand out – numbers that include "Avocado", "Moonlight In Rio", "Embolada", "Her Face", "Dream Girl", "Sambalero", and "Zomba" – all of which make the record stand out from other familiar bossa tunes of the time. LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear a small drillhole through the center. Label has a small drillhole.)

✨✧ Ivan LinsAwa Yio ... CD
Reprise, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record cut at a time when Brazilian singer Ivan Lins was enjoying a great wave of international fame – a moment that resulted in music that almost had him reaching out as a majestic singer, able to inspire the whole world at once, rather than just the mainstream audiences back home in Brazil! The set's got this quality that's very positive and uplifting – almost as if Lins is borrowing a bit from the production and arrangements that Milton Nascimento was using, but giving it a more personal twist with his excellent songwriting. And the whole thing's tight, but never slick – that careful balance that Brazilian artists could always reach, at a time when American singers would always sound too clunkily commercial. Ivan's voice is wonderful throughout – able to communicate volumes, even if you can't understand his language – and titles include "Pontas Cardeias", "Leva E Traz", "Clareou", "Awa Yio", and "Cru Cre Corroro". CD
