Aaron CohenMove On Up – Chicago Soul Music & Black Cultural Power ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. Rudi EschElectri City – The Dusseldorf School Of Electronic Music ... Book
Omnibus (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 26.99
A beautifully-done book on the scene in one of Germany's hippest cities in the 70s – the Dusseldorf world of electronic music – home to Kraftwerk, Neu, DAF, and many others! The book was put together by Ridu Esch, bass player in Die Krupps – themselves a pretty cool group – and it's got an unusual format that folds together material from over 50 different interviews, so that the different voices are almost coming forth in conversation – as Esch presents a year-by-year portrait of the changes and growth in Dusseldorf, starting in 1970, and running all the way up to 1986. The book features lots of side-steps along the way – including a look ag interactions with American and British musicians, and the way that German electronics of the 70s influenced British pop in the decade to come – all with lots of images and a very playful presentation of text. The whole thing is 413 pages, softcover, and filled with black and white images. Book

Nina Blackwood/Mark Goodman/Alan Hunter/Martha Quin/Gavin EdwardsVJ – The Unplugged Adventures Of MTV's First Wave ... Book
Atria, 2013. New Copy ... $2.99 17.00
The first big voices of MTV tell the tales of the early days of the influential music network – as Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn all spent quite a bit of time as on air "VJs" – which was the music television version of a radio jock! Back at the start, long before they started making their own shows, MTV was a showcase for short video clips by a huge variety of music artists – and the VJs would announce between videos, provide news content, and eventually grow into a role that had the network wielding surprisingly strong political power with young audiences by the end of the 80s. Writer Gavin Edwards helps shape the stories of the four VJs, but still retains their individual voices – as the book presents a few dozen short chapters, on a variety of subjects and moments in MTV history – with each VJ contributing thoughts and memories, almost like a roundtable discussion. Softcover, 318 pages. Book

✨✧ Billy BraggRoots Radicals & Rockers – How Skiffle Changed The World (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
You'll know Billy Bragg as a singer/songwriter, but he's also a surprisingly strong historian and author here – giving us a vivid look at the rise of skiffle bands on the UK scene at the end of the 50s! Skiffle was something that never played as strongly on our shores, but was inspired by American blues and folk – influences that younger UK artists used to create raw acoustic music that was heavy on rhythm, and a great contrast to the overproduced pop of England's post-war years! Long before the Beatles and the Stones, skiffle bands were the hippest things going in the British underground – and Billy Bragg does a great job of tracing the movement and showing its impact – something that's long overdue in the annals of music writing that's often too America-centric on the influences of British rockers in the 60s. 431 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Voyageur, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 40.00
A hefty book on the short-lived New Barbarians – a rock and roll supergroup founded by guitarist Ron Wood – with members that include bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Joseph Modeliste of The Meters, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and the legendary Keith Richards! The book is filled with photos from the group's years of touring in 1979 and 1980 – mostly bold action shots on stage, paired with shorter bits of text that almost serve like diary entries on the music. Plus, the book features a bonus CD – with 10 previously unreleased tracks all taken from 1979 rehearsals and live shows! Book is both color and black and white – depending on the photos – and is 199 pages, hardcover. Book

Rob ChapmanPsychedelia & Other Colours (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 36.00
An incredibly dense book on the psychedelic scene of the 60s – a huge volume that not only looks at an impressive array of music, but also the wider trippy culture, too – but all with a level of text that goes far beyond most of the thinner volumes on the period! Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

Chuck DChuck D Presents This Day In Rap & Hip Hop History (hardcover) ... Book
Octopus Books (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 39.99
A day-by-day list of important dates in hip hop – starting in 1973, and running all the way up to the present! Given that Chuck D's the man in charge, the set focuses most strongly on the 80s and early 90s – with very strong chapters on 1984 through 1995 – where date after date seems to resonate with the kind of important hip hop event that we can hardly believe actually "happened", as it's such a part of musical history now! Each date gets a small paragraph about the significance of the event that's named at the top – and these listings are interspersed with lots of full color images of hip hop legends – drawings, paintings, and other images provided by the book's co-contributors. 342 pages, hardcover, with lots of color images.
