Jimmy RogersChicago Bound ... CD
Chess, 1950s. Used ... $6.99
The title's an apt one here, as Jimmy Rogers was one of the many bluesmen who started out in the south, but headed to Chicago for greater fame – which was a good thing for Chess Records, who managed to come some of these great sides in the 50s! Rogers both sings and plays guitar – the later of which has a sometimes snakey quality that almost echoes a slight bit of jazz – a mode that recalls some of the inventions T Bone Walker was putting down at the time, but a little bit rootsier overall. Players on these sessions include Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Otis Spann, and Willie Dixon – and tracks include "Money Marbles & Chalk", "Ludella", "You're The One", "Back Door Friend", "I Used To Have A Woman", "Sloppy Drunk", "Blues Leave Me Alone", and "Walking By Myself". ✨✧ Willie MabonShake That Thing ... CD
Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (France), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great date from this legendary Chicago musician – an artist who recorded in the early days for Chess Records, then seemed to find his most welcome recording home overseas on albums like this! The material is from a 1973 session in France, but has all the grit and growl of a Chicago recording – with Willie on vocals, piano, and a bit of harmonica – and some sweet electric lines on guitar from the team of Louis Myers on lead, and Jimmy Rogers on rhythm – alongside Dave Myers on bass and Fred Below on drums. There's almost a slight current of funk at times, which Willie emphasizes with his piano in a great way – and titles include "Got To Have Some", "Shake That Thing", "Poison Ivy", "I'm Mad", "Lover Girl", "I Enjoyed Myself In Pau", "Hungry", and "Hey Girl". CD features a number of unissued tracks – including a few recorded at the same time in The Netherlands with guest vocals on one track by Koko Taylor! CD

✨✧ AcesChicago Beat (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970/1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from this Chicago group – material recorded in France, but which wails with the best sound of the small blues clubs on the south side at the time! The core group features Louis Myers on guitar and harmonica, Dave Myers on bass, and Fred Below on drums – joined by Eddie Taylor, Mickey Baker, and Jimmy Rogers on guitar at points – plus a bit of piano from the great Willie Mabon! The whole thing's excellent – very true to form, and more Delmark than some of the slicker blues recordings that were starting to show up at the time – on titles that include "Ace's Shuffle", "Tell Me Mama", "Take A Little Walk With Me", "Whole Lot Of Lovin", "Blues For Marcelle", and "Money Marbles & Chalk". CD features lots of bonus tracks – 6 more tracks added to the original album! CD
