Barbara BrownGot To Be Somebody – The XL Sessions – 60s Memphis Gold ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A great full length collection of work by Memphis singer Barbara Brown – a vocalist who appeared both as a solo act, and with her sisters – on a variety of singles for labels like Cadet, Atlantic, Tower, and MGM in the late 60s and early 70s! Barbara's got a deep, rich voice that's clearly schooled in gospel, but pointed towards more secular ends – an approach that's very much in keeping with the best late 60s wave of soul from Atlantic Records, and which is carried off here with a sharpness and precision that's simply mindblowing! Why Brown never scored bigger is a real mystery to us, because these tunes come off like the cream of the crop of southern soul at the end of the 60s – not just obscurities for obscurity sake, but some of the highest level of soul a female soul singer could hope for at the time! Titles include "Can't Find No Happiness", "Plenty Of Room", "A Great Big Thing", "Things Have Gone To Pieces", "Man Around The House", "Play Thing", "I'm Gonna Start A War", "I Don't Want To Have To Wait", "It Hurts Me So Much", "Got To Be Somebody", "There's A Look On Your Face", and "If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl". King SunXL (special edition with bonus tracks) ... CD
Profile/Traffic, 1989. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
Tough, righteous rap from King Sun – 1989's XL – a set that still looms large after all these years! King Sun dropped knowledge from a Five Percenter influence with a flow that's as smooth, solid and authoritive as any Bronx rapper of the day – and the production by Sun Born sounds great to this this day. This one was out of print for far too long! Includes "Hey Love", which uses the "Moments In Love" sample by Art Of Noise, and is standout produced by Cut Master DC. Also includes "Lethal Weapon", 'Ft Tape", "It's A Heat Up" and "Time To Go". This long-awaited Traffic remastered edition includes the earlier single cuts "Mythological Rapper" and "Christmas In The City" – both on CD for the first time. CD

✨✧ Gotan ProjectLunatico ... CD
XL, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Gotan Project have waited 5 years to follow up their international smash debut – but hearing the set, it's clearly been worth the wait – as the group have expanded into wide new realms of sound! It would have been easy for Gotan to quickly churn out another batch of nuevo tango work as before – but here, they're really complicating things up a fair bit – bringing in some acoustic touches from Calexico, adding in strings recorded in Buenos Aires, spoken words from Jimi Santos, and vocals from Cristina Vilallonga – yet somehow making all of these elements work together beautifully! The vibe here is much deeper and darker than before – still heavily tango-styled with a bit of electronics, but moving past the simpler sound the Starbucks generation has embraced so strongly. Titles include "Lunatico", "Mi Confession", "Domingo", "Paris Texas", "Criminal", "Arrabal", "Celos", "Diferente", and "Notas". CD

Big Dada/XL, 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from Dizzee Rascal – a record that was one of the better UK hip hop efforts at the time, and which also went on to hint at a sound and style that many others would cop in years to come! Dizzee's nice and gritty here – using old school instrumentation at a time when it wasn't very cool, but in ways that bring lots of grit into the beats, bass, and keyboard parts – a sonic blast and bite that really matches the intensity of his lyrical presentation. Titles include "Stop Dat", "Sittin Here", "Brand New Day", "2 For", "Cut Em Off", "Hold Ya Mouf", "Round We Go", "Jezebel", "Seems 2 Be", "Do It", and "Jus A Rascal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gil Scott-Heron/Makaya McCravenWe're New Again – A Reimagining By Makaya McCraven ... CD
XL/International Anthem, 2010/2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to a fantastic record – one that takes all the core lyrical creations of Gil Scott Heron from I'm New Here, then adds in a wide array of new music from drummer/genius Makaya McCraven! The approach is similar to some of Makaya's own albums – which are both performed and re-cut – and the core of Gil's lyrics are in place, but with instrumentation that's maybe even more powerful and moving than the original release – and which takes on a slightly different shape, with some rearrangement of the songs – backed by McCraven on drums and keyboards, Joel Ross on vibes, Brandee Younger on harp, Jeff Parker on guitar, Junius Paul on bass, and some other key talents from the International Anthem side of the universe. Titles include "Certain Bad Things", "I'm New Here", "The Patch (Broken Home part 2)", "Lilly Scott (Broken Home part 3)", "People Of The Light", "Running", "Blessed Parents", "New York Is Killing Me", "The Crutch", "I've Been Me", and "Where Did The Night Go". VariousMemphis 70 – The City's Funk & Soul In The Decade After Otis 1968 to 1977 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A mind-expanding look at Memphis soul – one that gets way past common cliches about the city and its music! There's a heavy dose of funk in the mix on most numbers here – a gritty, fuzzy approach to the music that seems slightly borrowed from the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – then mixed with some rougher, rootsier southern soul styles too! But other tracks take on a more sophisticated sound too – some of the righteous elements that hit Stax in the post-1968 period, especially as Isaac Hayes and David Porter were working on their own great solo work. Yet unlike Hayes and Porter, most of the artists here are much lesser-known – singers and groups who never charted big, but who got the chance to record for Memphis labels like XL, Stax, Select-O-Hits, and Sounds Of Memphis. CD features 20 tracks in all – and titles include "Dig It" by The Optimistics, "Mississippi Mud" by Smithsonian, "Two Paces Ahead Of Love" by Willie Walker, "Pullin" by The Minits, "It's Bump Time" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Blackrock Yeah Yeah" by Blackrock, "Keep The Faith" by Mel & Tim, "Watch Dog (alt)" by Barbara & The Browns, "Come What May" by John Gary Williams, "Strange Things" by Art Jerry Miller, "Shake" by The Ovations, "Tip Toeing" by Alvin Cash, "The Way Of Me" by Hannon, "Take A Giant Step" by LaCleve Milon, "Papa Killed A Chicken" by Willie Toliver, and "Don't Boom Boom" by Lillian Hale. Ivan Makvel's wearing his sound well on the cover – a sweet 80s version of old school funky – heavy on bassy bits and keyboards, and served up with an ensemble of guest stars who definitely make the record feel like a family affair! Ivan provides some vocals – sometimes electrified via a talkbox – but the set also opens up with guest work on just about every track – contributions from XL Middleton, Funkmaster Ozone, Mofak, Moniquea, and others – who keep things moving and bumping, almost like they're a compressed version of the P-Funk family working with just a beatbox, keyboards, and basslines. Titles include "About You", "We Come To Jam", "How You Make Me Feel Good", "Keep Movin", "Get Down", "Essential Funk", and "A Family Affair". LP, Vinyl record album

Muhal Richard AbramsBlues Forever ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Used ... $9.99
Hardly the blues that you might expect from the title – although knowing Muhal Richard Abrams, there's no doubt some sort of blues influence lurking in the background of his complicated orchestrations for the date! The album's a suite of original compositions by Abrams – all numbers played by a largeish group with lots of wonderful horn patterns – complexly woven together with lots of shifting shapes and tones, then sometimes breaking out in bold, free moments of improvisation! It's records like these that show why Abrams was one of the leading lights of the AACM by the early 80s – as much an important composer as a musician – equally skilled at both levels, and very sensitive to the strengths of the players he chose to work with. Muhal plays piano here – and other group members include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, Wallace Laroy McMillan on baritone and flute, Jimmy Vass on alto and flute, Eugene Ghee on tenor and clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Jean-Paul Bourelly on guitar, Michael Logan on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Titles include "Cluster For Many Worlds", "Quartet To Quartet", "Ancient & Future Reflections", "Du King", "Chambea", and "Duet For One World". CD

Andre BrasseurLost Gems From The 70s ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $32.99
Fantastic sounds from Belgian Hammond hero Andre Brasseur – a musician who clearly cut a heck of a lot of records back in the 70s, as evidenced by the huge range of record covers and 45 sleeves inside! Yet Brasseur's also one of those guys who never fully got his due – a keyboard talent who could work both in mellow instrumental and popular thematic styles – but who also cut some overlooked funky tracks during the 70s – the best of which are brought together in this sweet little set! The Sdban label have given us some other Belgian grooves from years back, but this package may well be their best so far – as Brasseur's work here really runs a great gamut, all of it wonderful – from tight, straight, soul-drenched organ lines – to other moments that are filled with weird sounds and flourishes, but set to a totally tight groove. The album's a great introduction to his work – and with all the rare records pictured within, it's virtually a blueprint for future crate-digging too! Titles inxlude "Sundance", "Saturnus", "Wild Fury", "Ali", "Red Dust", "Mad Train", "Funky", "Relax", and "Stress". CD

Susan ChristiePaint A Lady ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 28.99
The first-ever release of some incredible funky folk tunes from vocalist Susan Christie – originally recorded as demos in the years before her work at Columbia Records, and arguably even better than those classic singles! Backings here are by John Hill, who inflects Susan's folksy style with a heavier undercurrent – one that's subtly funky at the best moments, and which also pushes fuller strings and more baroque instrumentation into the mix – all in a way that almost sounds like David Axlerod might, had he started making folk records! Titles include the amazing 9 minute "Yesterday, Where's My Mind" – a funky mini-suite that's worth the price of the record alone – plus "Paint A Lady", "Rainy Day", "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "Echo In Your Mind", "When Love Comes", and "For The Love Of A Soldier". Elvis Costello & OthersSpanish Model ... LP
Universal, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99 25.99
A new take on a classic set from Elvis Costello – a record that features all the tunes from the classic This Year's Model album, done anew, and with Spanish language vocals from a variety of global stars! The overall sound of the record is a bit more contemporary than the 70s release – with production by Sebastian Krys, directed by Costello – who conceived the project – and while we're not sure that the record is going to open up Elvis in a huge new market, the whole thing is both a fresh take on the classic, and a testament to its staying power over the years. Titles include "La Chica De Hoy" by Cami, "Mentira" by Pablo Lopez, "Chelsea" by Raquel Sofia Y Fuego, "Yo Te Vi" by Draco Rosa, "No Action" by Nina Diaz, "La Turba" by Jorge Drexler, "Lipstick Vogue" by Morat, "Crawling To The USA" by Gian Marco & Nicole Zignago, and "Radio Radio" by Fito Paez. ✨✧ Electric Prunes (with David Axelrod)Release Of An Oath ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Very Good+ ... $39.99
The second album done by David Axelrod for The Electric Prunes – and arguably the best! The album's a bit unusual, in that none of the original Prunes were actually working on the session – and instead, Axlerod's almost fully at the helm – putting together the set in a way that's quite similar to his own solo albums over at Capitol! As with those, there's a bold, spacious sort of instrumentation here – richly orchestral, but also quite funky at times – punctuated by great drums from Earl Palmer, bass from Carol Kaye, keyboards from Don Randi, and guitar from Howard Roberts – who's really tripping out nicely here! The work uses the Jewish Kol Nidre mass as its conceptual focus – but really takes off with plenty of tripped-out Axelrod flourishes that make the whole thing a fair bit more psychedelic than anything you'd ever hear in temple. Titles include "Holy Are You", "The Adoration", "Our Father, Our King", "Kol Nidre", and "General Confessional". LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans, Karin Krog, Archie Shepp, Bobby HutcheLive At The Festival ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
A very interesting batch of tracks – one tune apiece by each of the artists named in the title, recorded between the years 1970 and 1973 at the Festival Ljublijana, in Yugoslavia. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxley on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time! Gary Farr looks a bit sallow on the cover, and the title's a bit clunky too – but the album's got a tight roots rock vibe that's very different than what you might expect! Jerry Wexler produced the set at Muscle Shoals – and although Farr hails from the UK, he slides right into the best southern modes – turning out tracks that often have some nice twists that take them past the usual blue-eyed soul – as does his vocal delivery, which occasionally stretches farther than expectations, with some unusual phrasing that almost echoes some of the hipper singer/songwriter generation too. Instrumentation is by some of the best at Muscle Shoals – Roger Hawkins, David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett, and others – and titles include "Breakfast Boogaloo", "Mexican Sun", "Faith What A Face", "Wailing Wall", and "Muggsy The Lard". A well-done showcase of Aretha's best early work for Atlantic Records – a collection that really gets at the deepest soul side of her style, and focuses on the transformation of sound that occurred when Franklin moved over to the label from Columbia. The set's overflowing with greatness – a total of 14 tracks in all, with killer arrangements by Arif Mardin, and landmark production from Tom Dowd, Jerry Wexler, and Mardin. Titles include "Spanish Harlem", "Chain Of Fools", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Dr Feelgood", "Respect", "Baby I Love You", "I Never Loved A Man", "Call Me", and "You're All I Need To Get By". Hampton HawesNorthern Windows Plus – Northern Windows/Playin In The Yard ... CD
Prestige, 1973/1974. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Some of the greatest recordings ever made by pianist Hampton Hawes – extremely different from most of his earlier sides, done with loads of cool 70s electric touches! The first album on this 2-in-1 set is the excellent live album Playin In The Yard – a killer session at Montreux in 1973, done with a light open-ended groove that's got a sweet mellow feel. The record is similar to some of Ahmad Jamal's best work from the same time – with a sound that's not exactly funk, but which features some killer work on Fender Rhodes – stretched out over long tunes with a tremendously soulful approach! Titles include "Double Trouble", "Pink Peaches", "De De", and "Stella By Starlight". Next up is the David Axelrod-assisted album Northern Windows – a sweet batch of funky cuts with arrangements and backings handled by Axe! The record really bubbles with the warm and soulful approach Axelrod was using at Fantasy – kind of a step off his stark modern sound at Capitol, but still done with just the right amount of space and appreciation of a funky rhythm. The great Carol Kaye is on bass, and Hawes plays some totally sweeeeeeeet electric keys on the set – really stretching out on tracks that include "Sierra Morena", "Go Down Moses", "Web", "Tune Axle Grease", and "C&H Sugar". One of the first albums ever recorded by UK jazz singer Stacey Kent – the start of a great run of albums that would bring the vocalist great fame in the decade to come! The style here is nice and laidback – that strong commitment to reviving jazz vocal modes that made Kent such a standout in a generation of smoother jazz artists – a real no-nonsense approach that has Stacey singing strongly with backing from a small, tight combo! Players include Jim Tomlinson on tenor, Colin Oxley on guitar, and David Newton on piano – all of whom really flesh out the colors of the tunes, on titles that include "There's No You", "It's Delovely", "Close Your Eyes", "Dream Dancing", "Day In Day Out", "Sleep Warm", "Little White Lies", and "You Go To My Head". Capitol/Now Sounds (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A huge amount of material from the lovely Donna Loren – star of both the big and the small screen in the 60s – and a surprisingly great singer, too! The package features singles, unreleased tracks, and Loren's classic Capitol album Beach Blanket Bingo – which has great work from the team of HB Barnum and David Axelrod! The Barnum/Axlerod combo is perhaps a bit more pop-oriented here than on some of the pair's other Capitol work from the 60s – such as their work with Lou Rawls – but there's often a nice sense of space, groove, and timing to these tracks – a mode that mixes the sweeter pop of Donna's voice with a bit more bounce on the bottom – all in a jaunty groove that's pretty great! Titles include "Cycle Set", "Fly Boy", "I Am My Ideal", "New Love", "It Only Hurts When I Cry", "I Think You Think", and "Beach Blanket Bingo". But in addition to the 10 tracks on the album, this collection adds in 19 more bonus cuts – including "Drop The Drip", "Ninety Day Guarantee", "Woman In Love", "Just A Little Girl", "So Do The Zonk", "Call Me", "My Way", "Hold Your Head High", "Good Things", "Smokey Joe's", and "Leave Him To Me". A complete classic from British pianist Howard Riley – exactly the sort of record that made him as important a new voice on the piano as Cecil Taylor in the US or Alexander Schlippenbach and Martial Solal on the European scene! The set's got the free, fiery vibe of some of Taylor's best work – but with even more inventive sounds from the whole trio – which also includes Barry Guy on bass and Tony Oxley on drums and amplified percussion – a tremendous lineup that's equally matched, and brilliant throughout! Riley is as wonderful as on his solo sessions – but he's almost even more incredible here for the way he balances things between all the players, and gives both Oxley and Guy some key space to make themselves known. Deep deep work from Muhsinah – a singer with a sound that's plenty darn hip! The record's got a feel that's as spacey as you might expect from the cover – not the broken beats of the London scene, but more a pastiche of elements from a range of different sources – righteous jazz, underground soul, analogue electronics, and more – all filtered together with a trippy production style that often has the vocals, beats, and keyboards leaping nicely from speaker to speaker! The sound is quite fresh, and hard to describe accurately – and it's our bet that we'll be hearing plenty from Muhsinah in years to come. Not Two (Poland), 1972/1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Very rare work from this legendary improvising orchestra – two different recordings from the first decade or so of the group's existence, at a time when they were hardly making any records at all! The first two long tracks are from a 1972 performances in Germany – and feature an early version of the group conducted by Buxton Orr, but with leader Barry Guy in strong formation – in a very large lineup that includes saxes from Evan Parker, Mike Osborne, Trevor Watts, and Alan Wakeman; trumpets from Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Mark Charig, and Dave Holdsworth; trombones from Paul Rutherford, Mike Gibbs, and Paul Nieman; guitar from Derek Bailey; piano from Howard Riley; percussion and drums from Paul Lytton and Tony Oxley; and more bass from Jeff Clyne and Chris Laurence. The players' ability to move in ways that are both cohesive and individual is breathtaking – on the long selections "Watts Parker Beckett To Me Mr Riley" and "Statements III". Next are two more tracks recorded in London in 1980 – one live, one studio – with some of the same players, but also the addition of Peter Brotzmann and Tony Coe on saxes, Philipp Wachsmann on violin, and John Stevens on percussion – on the tracks "Quasimode III" and "Appolysian". Most likely our favorite album by John McLaughlin – and one that features him in a wonderfully spare setting – alongside John Surman on saxes, Brian Odges on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums. The playing has a free and loose quality that McLaughlin would later lose on some his more fusion-y outings, and the group runs through some excellent post bop originals and modal excursion – all done with a wide open sound and a great sense of dynamics. Titles include "Holy Are You", "The Adoration", "Our Father, Our King", "Kol Nidre", and "General Confessional". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Aretha FranklinAretha Franklin – The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967 to 1970 ... LP
Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! Jerry Wexler is at the production helm on all these numbers – as the man who really helped Aretha find her special style at the label – and the cuts also feature arrangements from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, both studio talents who'd really help Franklin open up with a new sense of power and majesty as the 60s moved on! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You".
