Art Blakey —
WitchDoctor ... LP Blue Note, 1961. Very Good- ...

One of our favorite albums ever from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – but a set that was unreleased by Blue Note for quite a few years! The set's one of two gems the group recorded in 1961, but which were held back until the end of the 60s – and it features a stellar version of the group with Wayne Shorter on tenor, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all wonderful players who were really coming into their own at the time, and starting to bring a richness to the Messengers sound that would leave its mark in jazz for many years to come! The group is razor-sharp on the rhythms, but also really able to take new chances with their phrasing and timing – on a host of wonderful tracks that include "Those Who Sit & Wait", "The WitchDoctor", and "A Little Busy" – all real classics from this special group. LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a split top seam, small spine split, ring & edge wear, peel spot on the back cover paste-on at the top.)
A great collection of some of Tito's best dancers for the RCA label – cut during the late 50s and early 60s, and featuring classics like "Ti Mon Bo" and "Ran Kan Kan", two of the cuts that really put Tito on the map! Other tracks include "WitchDoctor's Nightmare", "Almendra", "Tito Timbero", "Cao Cao Mani Picao", and "La Ola Marina". LP, Vinyl record album
The final recording from the good Captain and his last crew, and one of our favorites. Sideways rhythms collide with arthritic guitar parts in a remarkable gumbo topped off by Don Van Vliet's unique lyrical vision. A modern classic! Includes "Ice Cream For Crow", "Semi Multi Coloured Caucasian", "Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat", "The Past Sure Is Tense", "The WitchDoctor Life" and "81 Poop Hatch". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)
One of the best-remembered records by this classic ensemble – thanks to a sweet vocal take on "Nina Never Knew", the playful sound of "Doodletown Fifers", and other cuts that include "Eddie & The WitchDoctor", "Azure-Te", "Stop Sit Down Relax Think", and "Rain". Classic Jim Flora cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Silver & red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some surface wear, yellowing from age, and half split seams.)
