WhispersLove For Love ... CD
Solar/Right Stuff, 1983. Used ... $14.99
Love for Love, but still a pretty groove-heavy set too – one that continues the mix of "dancin and romancin" The Whispers served up on their previous album! Side one is heavy on "dancin" – and features some bass-heavy tunes that are very much in the best mainstream LA soul modes of the time – production by the group and Leon Sylvers, all in a sound that's heavy on basslines and keyboards, but which still has harmonies that are way ahead of most of the group's younger contemporaries! These harmonies come into play even more strongly on the "romancin" side of the record – a batch of ballads that have The Whispers in the mellower territory that first got them started – updated slightly here with an early 80s soul vibe, but sung with proof that the quintet were still at the top of the harmony game. Titles include "Tonight", "Keep On Lovin Me", "This Time", "Had It Not Been For You", "Try It Again", "Lay It On Me", and "Keep Your Love Around". CD

✨✧ WhispersWhispers – The Definitive Collection 1972 to 1987 (4CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/1980s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous testament to one of the greatest soul groups of the 70s – one with a legacy that goes far beyond the music in this set, but which is really captured here during the golden years of The Whispers on record! The group has roots that start in the vocal group underground of the late 50s and 60s – and spent most of that second decade perfecting their harmonies and vocal interplay – to a point where they emerged in the early 70s with real hit-making power, thanks to their effortless interpretation of mellow tracks and ballads! Yet the group were not without a groove – and as the decade moved on, they also proved to be equally great at clubbier tracks too – able to pick up the pace while still delivering meaningful lyrics, a quality that really set them apart from so many others at the time. As the 80s move in, the group continue to grow and develop their sound – staying sophisticated, but down to earth too – at a level that maybe gave The Whispers a longer run of all-great records than so many artists of their generation. This well-done package does a wonderful job of picking out all the best cuts from the long run of recordings covered inside – 63 tracks that provide a perfect place to start, if you're just getting into the group – and which together will offer you up a fantastic package if you're a longtime fan. ✨✧ VariousComplete 80's Soul Weekender (3CD set) ... CD
WSM (UK), 1970s/1980s. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A motherlode of soul hits from the 80s – 3CDs worth of music, and a collection that goes way past the hits! The 52 tracks on the set include a surprising amount of rare groove gems – some of which were actually recorded in the 70s, but had a new life on the British scene of the 80s (something you might have guessed from the "weekender" allusion in the title.) The set's not much on notes, but it offers up a heck of a great musical punch for the money – with titles that include "Searching" by Change, "Joy & Pain" by Maze, "Expansions" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume, "All This Love That I'm Givin" by Gwen McCrae, "I Found Lovin" by Fatback Band, "You're The One For Me" by D Train, "Love Has Come Around" by Donald Byrd, "Just A Touch Of Love" by Slave, "We Got The Funk" by Positive Funk, "It's A Love Thing" by The Whispers, "Ain't No Stoppin Us Now" by McFadden & Whitehead, "Walking On Sunshine" by Rockers Revenge, "Let The Music Play" by Shannon, "Can You Handle It" by Sharon Redd, "Get Touch" by Keeer, "Never Too Much" by Luther Vandross, "Always" by Atlantic Starr, and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" by Rose Royce. VariousSlow Jams Christmas Volume 2 ... CD
Right Stuff, 1960s/1970s/1980s. Used ... $3.99
The Slow Jam Christmas continues – with a host of mellow Holiday soul tracks from the 60s through the 80s! The set mixes up the groove a fair bit as the titles roll on, but the overall feel here is still quite solid – and we're surprised at how nice a few of the older tunes sound next to more recent numbers. Titles include "Soul Santa" by Brook Benton, "Christmas Love" by Rotary Connection, "Merry Christmas" by Darryl Tookes, "I Can Hardly Wait Til Christmas" by The O'Jays, "Auld Lang Syne" by Lou Rawls, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Al Green, "Christmas Song" by Al Jarreau, "My Christmas Gifts" by Alexander O'Neal, and "A Very Special Holiday" by The Whispers. ✨✧ VariousSpirit Of Philadelphia ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Simply the best Philly 70s collection we've heard – ever! This one goes way past the hits, and moves into work from a variety of labels – not just the famous tunes on Philly International, but all of the Philly-produced gems that were coming out from other sources and other singers during the 1970s – a decade when the Philly sound had a golden touch that could transform the work of any singer into pure genius! The tracks on the set are really well thought-out – a sampling of work from a variety of different artists that you might not think to associate with the Philly groove at first glance, plus others who had their only really truly strong success through a brief link with the City of Brotherly Love. 18 tunes in all – and all of them warm clubby grooves with a perfectly smooth feel! Titles include "Look On The Good Side" by The Invitations, "Make It Last" by Barbara Mason & The Futures, "Good For The Gander" by Jermaine Jackson, "Stay With Me" by The Futures, "Who Loves You" by The Joneses, "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" by Touch Of Class, "Hurt So Bad" by The Philly Devotions, "Will You Be Mine" by The Whispers, "Now OR Never" by Little Dooley, "One More Time" by Dianne Steinberg, "Where It's Warm" by Revelation, and "A Little Bit Or Love" by Charen Cotton. VariousThis Is Lowrider Soul – 1962 to 1970 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. Used ... $9.99
There have been lots of Lowrider soul compilations on the market over the years – documenting the great of of mellow cuts on the LA scene of the 60s – particularly the kind that could move slow, but with a heavy groove at the bottom – perfect for chilling out in the back of a car on an endless summer night! Yet few have ever done the job as well as this collection – because in the hands of Ace/Kent Records, the music finally gets proper historical context – moved past the jargon of the East LA in crowd, and presented with great sound, and the kind of detailed notes that really get at the special qualities that made the west coast soul scene so different than the east in the 60s!
