✨✧ Flower MeguSasayaki, Tameki, & Modae (Sighs, Whispers, & Anguish) ... LP
Dan/Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really cool record from Japanese actress Flower Megu – one that came out at the latter end of the "pin up" years of the scene, in which a lovely face and sexy voice were often more than enough to make a record! That's definitely the case here – as Flower delivers a mix of spoken and sung material, maybe a bit in the territory of Jane Birkin during the same time – but with instrumentation that's a bit more varied. The set actually begins with a version of the classic "Je T'Aime", which Birkin sang with Serge Gainsbourg – and it moves through tunes in a variety of styles, with some light orchestrations, and some more 70s gentle pop modes. ✨✧ New OrderEverythings Gone Green/Cries & Whispers/Mesh ... 12-inch
Factory (Belgium), 1981. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first really catchy songs to ever come from New Order – but served up here on a single that still retains some of the moodier elements of their Joy Division years! At some level, "Everything's Gone Green" is almost a blueprint for everything that would follow – "Blue Monday" and beyond – but it's also more spare, and has the spacey guitar lines almost speaking more than the vocals! Backed here by the excellent "Cries & Whispers" and "Mesh". 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Recent UK 180 gram pressing. Cover has bumped corner, but looks great overall.)

Janus, 1972. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of their best LPs from the early 70's, back when they were less uptempo, and still focusing on good group harmony cuts that had more of a traditional mix of ballads and midtempo tracks. The LP includes a nice moody cover of "Speak Softly Love", plus "Here Comes Tomorrow", "Life & Breath", "Give Me A Little Love", "Does She Care", and "Can We Love Forever". LP, Vinyl record album

WhispersLove For Love ... CD
Solar/Right Stuff, 1983. Used ... $14.99
Love for Love, but still a pretty groove-heavy set too – one that continues the mix of "dancin and romancin" The Whispers served up on their previous album! Side one is heavy on "dancin" – and features some bass-heavy tunes that are very much in the best mainstream LA soul modes of the time – production by the group and Leon Sylvers, all in a sound that's heavy on basslines and keyboards, but which still has harmonies that are way ahead of most of the group's younger contemporaries! These harmonies come into play even more strongly on the "romancin" side of the record – a batch of ballads that have The Whispers in the mellower territory that first got them started – updated slightly here with an early 80s soul vibe, but sung with proof that the quintet were still at the top of the harmony game. Titles include "Tonight", "Keep On Lovin Me", "This Time", "Had It Not Been For You", "Try It Again", "Lay It On Me", and "Keep Your Love Around". CD

Classic Solar material by The Whispers, with two sides of tracks – one "for dancin", one "for romancin". The dancin side was produced by Leon Sylvers, has a tight 80s groove sound that's very nice, and includes the cuts "Turn Me Out", "In The Raw", and "Emergency". The romancin side is much more mellow, and features some good modern soul harmonies by the group, set to production by Wallace Scott. WhispersWhisper In Your Ear/Whispers/Imagination (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Robinsongs (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 24.99
A trio of classic albums from The Whispers – with bonus tracks too! On the first set, the mighty group does way more here than just Whisper in your ear – as they're completely on top of their game, ending the 70s with a wickedly sharp sound that would help them stand strong for years to come! The group started in fragile harmony soul modes, grew with confidence in the 70s, hit a bit of a dancefloor mode – and here step off with this mature style that's totally wonderful – the best of all worlds together as one – shaped by arrangements from Tom Tom 84, Gene Page, and Keni Burke! Titles include "Whisper In Your Ear", "Homemade Lovin'", "If I Don't Get Your Love", "Love At Its Best", "Can't Do Without Love", and "Pretty Lady". The 1979 Whispers album was one of a few to bear the group's name as its title – and it's also one of our favorite albums by The Whispers – a later gem with some really great songs, and a sound that shows the group strongly moving into hit territory! In some way, the album's almost a return to the mellow harmony soul of the group's roots – slowing down the pace from the disco years to craft some extremely great ballads and midtempo numbers. There's still a bunch of great club tracks too – like the classic "And The Beat Goes On" – but in a way, our favorite tracks are the mellower ones, like "Lady", "I Love You", and the sublime, "A Song For Donny", a tribute to the late Donny Hathaway, written around the music of his classic "This Christmas". On Imagination, the group takes off from the Philly groove style of their late 70s work, moving into a style that picks up all the best touches of the early 80s LA sound – electro keyboards, but not too much; quiet storm production, but not so much so that the album's smothered in it; and a professional approach to harmonies and songwriting that showed that the group was still an unstoppable force in soul music! Includes "Imagination", "It's A Love Thing", "Say You", "I Can Make It Better" and "Up On Soul Train". Bonus tracks include an instrumental of "Song For Donny" – plus 7" mixes of "Can't Do Without Love", "Can You Do The Boogie", "And The Beat Goes On", "It's A Love Thing", and "I Can Make It Better". ✨✧ WhispersWhispers – The Definitive Collection 1972 to 1987 (4CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/1980s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous testament to one of the greatest soul groups of the 70s – one with a legacy that goes far beyond the music in this set, but which is really captured here during the golden years of The Whispers on record! The group has roots that start in the vocal group underground of the late 50s and 60s – and spent most of that second decade perfecting their harmonies and vocal interplay – to a point where they emerged in the early 70s with real hit-making power, thanks to their effortless interpretation of mellow tracks and ballads! Yet the group were not without a groove – and as the decade moved on, they also proved to be equally great at clubbier tracks too – able to pick up the pace while still delivering meaningful lyrics, a quality that really set them apart from so many others at the time. As the 80s move in, the group continue to grow and develop their sound – staying sophisticated, but down to earth too – at a level that maybe gave The Whispers a longer run of all-great records than so many artists of their generation. This well-done package does a wonderful job of picking out all the best cuts from the long run of recordings covered inside – 63 tracks that provide a perfect place to start, if you're just getting into the group – and which together will offer you up a fantastic package if you're a longtime fan. VariousWhispers – Lounge Originals ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
One of the coolest collections we've seen from the Numero Group in a long time – an assortment of obscure lounge singers and groups who played the Midwest scene in the glory days of the cocktail bar – not exotica acts or jazz combos, but instead the kind of warm and mellow artists you might find working in the dim corner of some shag-laden lounge! These are artists who were clearly brought up in a world of rock first, jazz and other styles second – maybe with a homegrown AOR vibe, but a lot more stripped-down and personal too. The package is very cool – designed like a matchbook cover from one of the clubs, complete with a poster of other matchbooks inside – and artists include The Do's & Don'ts, Jan Tober & Ron Satterfield, Richard Powell, Terri Schmidt, Tom Dae, Nick Gillette, Mike Munoz, James, Mood Mystics, Cleveland Jones, and Blue Eyed Soul. Erma FranklinSoul Sister (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Lost funky work from one of the soulful sisters of Aretha Franklin! Erma's got a hard-hitting style that's right up there with Aretha's best for Atlantic – and on this album, she's working in Chicago with Johnny Pate, Sonny Sanders, and Willie Henderson – for a harder-hitting sound than her famous sis, really in the groove with the best of Brunswick from the late 60s! There's as much funk on the record as there is the deep soul you'd expect from the Franklin family, and Erma's vocals are incredible – equally at home with the original tracks on the record, as well as some late 60s hits that are nicely soulized by the boys in the band! Titles include "Hold On I'm Coming", "Baby I Love You", "Light My Fire", "You've Been Cancelled", "Can't See My Way", and "Gotta Find Me A Lover". CD features five bonus tracks – including "Whispers", "It Could've Been Me", "I Just Don't Need You", "Higher & Higher", and "I Get The Sweetest Feelin". CD

✨✧ Pierre HenryMalefices ... LP
Cacophonic (UK), 1961. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare 60s soundtrack from electronic genius Pierre Henry – and a record that features some of his spookiest sounds of the decade! Side one is full of music used in the film – and much of it is very spare, with lots of low-end electronic textures – especially some of those sighs and whispers that Henry was able to coax out of his early equipment before anyone else! There's a few slower keyboard passages, too – but these are also pretty murky and dark as well. Side two brings in a few extracts from other larger Henry compositions – but with a spirit that certainly fits the needs of the record as well. Titles include "Theme De Catherine", "Scene De La Trappe", "Apres Le Mort", "Generique", and "Catherine Malade". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alton McClain & DestinyIt Must Be Love/More Of You ... CD
Polydor/Expansion (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of overlooked female soul gems – back to back on a single CD! The first album is It Must Be Love – sweet late 70s modern soul from Alton McClain & Destiny – a great little female vocal trio with a sound that ranges from lightly funky with jazzy flourishes, to soaringly soulful! The group kind of follow in a tradition started by Honeycone and First Choice, and improved upon by The Emotions – and like that latter group, the girls move from the easier disco tracks that you'd normally expect, into a range of soulful styles that all come off equally well with their vocal technique. Webster Lewis handled some of the nice string arrangements – and players include Wah Wah Watson on guitar and Lee Ritenour on keys. titles include "Crazy Love", "Sweet Temptation", "Taking My Love For Granted", "My Empty Room", "Push & Pull", and "The Power Of Love". More Of You is one of the best records by this great little modern soul trio who should have gone onto bigger and better things. The session's got a strong mellow groove, typical of some of the non-hit soul coming out of labels like Polydor and Capitol at the end of the 70s – and tracks include "Stares & Whispers", "Love Waves", "More Of You", "99 1/2", "You Bring Me To My Morning Light", and "Thank Heaven For You". Nick NicholasBig Nick ... LP
India Navigation, 1985. Near Mint- ... $9.99 11.99
Big Nick Nicholas is one of these lost tenor stars that you always hear whispers about, but can never find on wax. Years ago, Coltrane honored him with the great composition "Big Nick", but despite that fame, Nicholas had never cut a record as a leader until this obscure session in 1985. The set's a perfect showcase for his tenor – as the quartet of Billy Hart, John Miller, and Dave Jackson sit back and let Nick take the lead on most tracks, blowing away in the comfortable style that he must have used in the Boston gigs that first got him noticed back in the late 40s. Titles include "Big Nick", "Down Home Blues", "Reincarnation Of Sonny Clark", and "Two For The Road". LP, Vinyl record album

A great entry in one of our favorite series for rare soul tracks these days – a really special sort of collection that brings together tracks with a vibe that's very much all its own! The set definitely serves up the "real side" that it promises in the title – tunes that aren't showy or full of fuss – and instead, these easygoing soul tracks that hit their mark, right from the start – then go long with tremendous staying power, and a sense of warmth that has us returning to the set again and again for repeated listenings! The choice of cuts is sublime – a few familiar numbers mixed with overlooked tracks from artists we know, but haven't heard from in this way before – served up on 20 tracks that include "Never Set Me Free" by Continental Showstoppers, "I'm Coming Home" by Gerald Taylor, "I Can Remember" by The Whispers, "I'd Believe Him" by Deniece Chandler, "What Does It Take" by The Electrifying Cashmeres, "If You Decide" by Bull & The Matadors, "Try Something New" by Eddie Billups, "When" by Joe Simon, "Lover Come Back" by Jackey Beavers, "Nobody But You" by Willie Hightower, "I Hate Hate" by Razzy Bailey, "Why Don't You Write" by Lee Bates, "Grooving With My Thing" by The DeVons, and "Smooth Sailing" by Three Shades Of Soul. Simply the best Philly 70s collection we've heard – ever! This one goes way past the hits, and moves into work from a variety of labels – not just the famous tunes on Philly International, but all of the Philly-produced gems that were coming out from other sources and other singers during the 1970s – a decade when the Philly sound had a golden touch that could transform the work of any singer into pure genius! The tracks on the set are really well thought-out – a sampling of work from a variety of different artists that you might not think to associate with the Philly groove at first glance, plus others who had their only really truly strong success through a brief link with the City of Brotherly Love. 18 tunes in all – and all of them warm clubby grooves with a perfectly smooth feel! Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
There have been lots of Lowrider soul compilations on the market over the years – documenting the great of of mellow cuts on the LA scene of the 60s – particularly the kind that could move slow, but with a heavy groove at the bottom – perfect for chilling out in the back of a car on an endless summer night! Yet few have ever done the job as well as this collection – because in the hands of Ace/Kent Records, the music finally gets proper historical context – moved past the jargon of the East LA in crowd, and presented with great sound, and the kind of detailed notes that really get at the special qualities that made the west coast soul scene so different than the east in the 60s! The set list is superb – fantastic mellow soul tracks that are perfect, even if you don't care about this history – and titles include "It's Not That Easy" by Reuben Bell with The Casanovas, "I Really Love You" by The Ambassadors, "As I Sit Here" by The Whispers, "One More Chance" by The Four Tees, "Take A Step" by Aesop's Fables, "Why'd You Put Me On" by Bobbi Row & The Englishmen, "I Wanna Chance" by The Vows, "Second Hand Happiness" by Jimmy Conwell, "Be Kind To Love" by The Interpreters, "As Long As I've Got You" by The Charmels, "Don't Forget About Me Baby" by Jeff Dale, "I'm A Lonely Man" by Bobby Burn, "Crying All By Myself" by William Bell, "I'm Just Passing Time" by Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles, "When You're Poor" by The Lovers, "It's So Hard To Break A Habit" by The Webs, "Find Me" by The Attractions, "Never Gonna Let Him Know" by Debbie Taylor, and "Pretending Dear" by The Lovelles. VariousTurn Off The Lights – Sweet Soul Music ... CD
Essential, Late 60s/Early 70s/2020. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A nice little set that delivers exactly what's promised in the title – sweet soul music from back in the day, plus a few tracks from the contemporary Philly scene! The cuts here nicely move between styles – many are the warm harmony cuts that were the calling card of Philly and New Jersey at the start of the 70s – and the rhythms here move from completely mellow to midtempo – that shift in harmony soul towards the club that was so influential from some of these artists at the time. Tracks include "Me & My Gemini" by First Class, "Carla My Love" by Softones, "Together" by Tony Strong & The Philly Soul, "Babies Having Babies" by Terry Tate, "Sure Thing" by New Birth, "Hypnotized" by Linda Jones, "My Ebony Princess" by Jimmy Briscoe & The Little Beavers, "Special Lady" by Ray Goodman & Brown, "Natural High" by Captain Sky, "Reunited" by Johnny Ingram with Sherena Khan, "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" by Glenn Leonard with Jean Carne, "Didn't Anyone Ever Tell You I Love You" by Philly Devotions, "Yes I'm Ready" by Barbara Mason, "A Lover's Stand" by Norma Jenkins & The Dolls, and "Your Love Is So Doggone Good" by The Whispers. ✨✧ VariousValley Of The Sun – The Field Guide To Inner Harmony (black & orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A set of tracks that take the new age into the space age – all served up from the Valley Of The Sun label, and presented here in a really well-done compilation! These tracks are the side of new age that's less acoustic and more electronic – some of the music that you might have listened to while meditating on the cosmos at night, out in the desert – served up on keyboards and electronics, but still with a warmly organic vibe overall! The approach is a bit like some of the sound library shift that was taking place at KPM as the 70s closed – but the presentation here is pure Numero – right down to the detailed notes that provide a history of the label and its scene! Titles include "Channel For The Light (part 2)" by David Storrs, "Sex Drive" by Slap & Powell, "I Am" by Gloria Thomas, "UFO" by Robert Slap, "Key West Afternoon V" by Steven Cooper, "Daystar" by Celestial Odysseys, "Sedona Sunrise" by David Storrs, "Temple In The Forest" by David Naegele, and "Celestial Whispers 2" by Upper Astral.
