✨✧ Bill HaleyWarner Brothers Years & More (6CD set) ... CD
Warner/Bear Family (Germany), 1960s. Used 6CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The lesser-known second chapter of the career of Bill Haley – material all recorded after his initial years at Decca and Essex, where he'd helped shape the sound of early rock and roll! Haley was going strong before rock came into the mix – a non-stop partier and very energetic bandleader – and his work of the 60s really shows a continued onslaught of activity, even though most folks don't know these records all that well! Haley starts out at Warner in a version of his Decca style, but soon shifts things up, gets a bit more groovy, then almost feels like he's getting raunchier for the rock revival years of the late 60s. The set's got lots of surprises – plenty of rare and unissued tracks, and a full live show recorded at the Bitter End in 1969, which really showcases some of the rawer side of Bill's energy. A surprisingly great package – with the usual copious amount of tracks and very detailed notes from Bear Family! CD

Herbie HancockMwandishi – The Complete Warner Brothers Recordings ... CD
Warner, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Essential set that brings together all of Herbie's key transitional recordings for Warner Brothers! Herbie started his years for the label playing in a more straight-ahead funky style – with perennial sample fave recordings like "Wiggle Waggle", "Fat Mama", and "Tell Me A Bedtime Story". Soon, however, he moved into more spacey territory – of the sort that he would later examine fully on his Columbia recordings of the early 70s. Tracks in this vein include "Sleeping Giant", "Water Torture", and "Wandering Spirit Song". The whole set features 3 full albums – Fat Mama, Crossings, and Mwandishi – and it's a great 2CD set filled with hard to find jazz funk classics! CD

Warner (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $8.99
Killer funk, soul, and jazz tunes from the Warner and Atlantic catalogs – including more than a few that rank with our favorite funky cuts of the era! As with previous volumes in this series, the titles are selected with a focus on tunes that have or can be sampled – so there's lots of sweet jazzy brakes, warm keyboards, and tasty drums on the package! Titles include "Wah Wah Man" by Young Holt Unlimited, "Nuki Suki" by Little Richard, "Mama Soul" by The Soul Survivors, "It's Love" by The Young Rascals, "Funky Canyon" by Phil Moore Jr, "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky" by Claudia Lennear, "Soul Bowl" by Memphis Horns, "Shiloh" by David Newman, "Let Me Fix It" by Brook Benton, "Angela, My Sister" by Richard Evans, "When She Made Me Promise" by The Beginning Of The End, "Moment Of Truth" by Earth, Wind, & Fire, "Bumpin On Young Street" by Young Holt Unlimited, and "Mortgage On My Soul" by Keith Jarrett. Laurie AndersonBig Science ... CD
Warner, 1982. Used ... $3.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". CD

✨✧ ApolloniaApollonia ... CD
Warner, 1988. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Solo work from Apollonia – working here past her time with both Apollonia 6 and her association with Prince – but still showing an equally strong talent for catchy 80s pop! The music is handled by a host of producers, and most numbers are in a beat-heavy mode that follows on her previous material – funky, but not always in a Prince-ish way – but always tuneful and heavy on the hooks! Titles include "Help Wanted", "Mismatch", "Sychronize", "The Same Dream", "Since I Fell For You", "You Can't Win", and "Your Eyes". CD

Atlantic StarrAll In The Name Of Love ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1986. Used ... $4.99
A mid 80s classic from Atlantic Starr – at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". BandLast Waltz ... CD
Warner, 1978. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
One of the most iconic rock and roll shows of all time – the late 70s farewell to The Band – and quite famously, much more than a final concert by an esteemed band, it's actually a rock, pop, folk, blues and soul summit that features The Band as the house band. This landmark document of the event has always been one of rock's more opulent releases – with appearances by Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, The Staples and more. Includes "The From The Last Waltz", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Shape I'm In", "Down In South New Orleans" with Bobby Charles, "Forever Young" with Bob Dylan, "I Shall Be Released (Finale)", "Rag Mama Rag", "Further Up The Road" with Eric Clapton, "Dry Your Eyes" with Eric Clapton, "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris, "The Weight" with The Staples and more. George BensonGive Me The Night ... CD
Warner, 1980. Used ... $5.99
Yipes! This one made everyone a bucket of money – especially Quincy Jones, whose new Qwest imprint the record was one of the first to grace. George has come a long way from his roots with Jack McDuff here – but in a way that kind of has us impressed, as he's grooving away slickly on guitar, laying down some smooth vocals that we never would have imagined from his mid 60s recordings. Includes the massive hit "Give Me The Night", a cover of "Moody's Mood", and the tracks "Star Of A Story (X)", "Midnight Love Affair", "What's On Your Mind", and "Dinorah, Dinorah". The sound of a million supermarkets and elevators during the 80s! CD

Warner, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Titles include "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "NIB", "Wicked World", and "Warning". CD

✨✧ Black SabbathParanoid ... CD
Warner, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

✨✧ Graham BondSolid Bond ... CD
Warner (UK), 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Certainly solid work from Graham Bond – working here with an all-star lineup who really make the record cook nicely! The set features some of Bond's best contemporaries – all players who, like him, had started out in simpler mod 60s modes, but had really matured strongly by the time of this date – moving into a range of complicated jazz and rockish expressions in their own music, but uniting here with Graham for a set that's still got a nice old school groove! In a time when some of the jazz rock groups were getting a bit excessive, this album's nicely restrained – shortish tracks that focus strongly on tight hooks and soulful rhythms, but all in ways that still sound plenty adventurous. Bond plays Hammond and sings, and other guests include Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John McLaughlin – on titles that include "Can't Stand It", "Walkin In The Park", "Long Legged Baby", "Doxy", "The Grass Is Greener", "It's Not Goodbye", "Neighbor Neighbor", and "Springtime In The City". Bootsy's Rubber BandAhh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! ... CD
Warner, 1977. Used ... $7.99
Massive work from Bootsy Collins – one of his best-ever solo albums, and a perfect summation of the P-Funk groove – focused strongly through Bootsy's own sense of stardom! George Clinton worked with Collins on production, and the album's as tight as the best Parliament or Funkadelic work of the time – particularly the latter on their killer 70s sides for Warner, which was also the home for Bootsy. The Horny Horns are helping out on this one, which gives the album a strong instrumental drive – but the real star is Bootsy, whose sexy vocals and good sense of soul keep things firmly on track throughout. Features the cuts "What's A Telephone Bill?", "Munchies For Your Love", "We Want Bootsy", "The Pinocchio Theory", and "Rubber Duckie". CD

✨✧ Gene ClarkNo Other (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Asylum/Warner (Germany), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty amazing effort from country rock progenitor Gene Clark! This one blends breezy songcraft that's not too far off from his previous couple of great solo albums – rustic harmonies and memorable lyricism flavored by acoustic guitars – with far more deft studio touches such as synths and densely layered backing vocals. There really was no other album in '74 like No Other, and initially it had the poor reception to show for it! It has a somewhat laidback and laconic vibe overall – infused with that Cali country rock groove that Gene helped invent – yet the production is richly produced on an epic scale, an effort that seems to seek flat out perfection. A couple years later, California fellow travelers would utilize a similar approach and sell LPs by the ton. Here's hoping those groups bought Gene a dinner or two to thank him for the inspiration! Includes "Life's Greatest Fool", "Silver Raven", "No Other", "Some Misunderstanding", "The True One", "Lady Of The North", "Strength Of Strings" and "From A Silver Phial". CD includes 7 bonus tracks. Bootsy CollinsOne Giveth, The Count Taketh Away ... CD
Warner, 1982. Used ... $11.99
Bootsy Collins steps strongly from the shadow of George Clinton here – and wrote, arranged, and produced most of the album himself! Of course, George was having plenty of his own troubles at the time – but that only allowed Bootsy to take the helm even more, and step out with a batch of grooves that still keeps his star power plenty high. Of course, he's got some great help here too – from Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns, Midnight Star, Godmomma, and P-Funk regulars Bernie Worrell and Gary Shider – all of whom help contribute some classic elements to grooves that include "Shine O Myte", "#1 Funkateer", "So Nice You Name Him Twice", "Take A Lickin & Keep On Kickin", and "Countracula". Alice ColtraneEternity ... CD
Warner (UK), 1976. Used ... $9.99
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneMy Favorite Things (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Warner (UK), 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful wonderful wonderful work from the legendary John Coltrane – and even though it's probably one of his best-selling albums of all time, it's still a treasure – and has an essential place in just about any jazz collection! We've heard the original title version of "My Favorite Things" a million times – but it still blows our mind the way Coltrane hits this incredibly soulful modal groove, twisting and turning on soprano sax, always keeping things interesting, so that we're surprised that the cut's 13 minutes have gone by so quickly! The rest of the record's equally great – and the 3 other long cuts are "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "Summertime" and "But Not for Me". As great today as when it was cut, and still one of Coltrane's most revelatory albums! With McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. CD

Warner, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Legendary live work from one of the greatest supergroups of all time – never-heard material from their famous concert tour of 1974! Neil Young is a key part of the lineup of Graham Nash, David Crosby, and Stephen Stills – and the quartet harmonize and trade leads beautifully on a set of tracks that bristle with even more intensity than their famous studio versions – almost with more of the sort of edge you'd find on Young's own recordings at the time. The guitar work is wonderful – very upfront and essential on most tracks, with different vibes than the studio versions – and titles include "Immigration Man", "Wooden Ships", "The Lee Shore", "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", "Chicago", "Ohio", "Long Time Gone", and "Johnny's Garden". ✨✧ Julee CruiseFloating Into The Night ... CD
Warner, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
A haunting debut from singer Julee Cruise – collaborating with filmmaker/songwriter/producer David Lynch and his Twin Peaks soundtrack composer Angelo Badalamenti! The album was underappreciated at the time, perhaps because its loose connection to Lynch's Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet was too big of a pop culture hurdle for critical minds to clear, but it really deserves a reassessment. The mix of nostalgic 50s ballroom pop and ethereal modern dream pop is unique, kind of otherworldly, and Julee's gorgeous vocals carry it over with style to spare. Wierd and beautiful – there's really nothing else like it! Titles include "Floating", "Falling", "I Remember", "Mysteries Of Love", "Into The Night", "I Float Alone", "The Swan", "The World Spins" and more. CD

The quality of the performances here is great – very similar to some of Miles' early 80s work for Columbia, especially his great 2LP live set for them – and the players on the tracks vary a bit, given the setting – and include Adam Holzman, Joey DeFrancesco, and Robert Irving III on keyboards – plus Kenny Garrett on alto and flute, Benny Rietveld and Foley on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, and Marilyn Mazur on percussion. The first big Paul Desmond solo album of the 60s – and a standout set that's very much in the tradition of his best work on RCA! This rare side was cut for Warner Brothers during a time when they were taking a brief dip into jazz – and it's a rarely-heard set that features Jim Hall on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Percy Heath on bass, all backing up Paul with a spare "after hours" sound that's a marked change from his tightly woven work with Brubeck. Desmond's alto is full of possibilities here – working wonders with familiar tunes like "Greensleeves", "You Go To My Head", "Time After Time", and "East Of The Sun" – as well as with the John Lewis modern number "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West". Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireNeed Of Love ... CD
Warner, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant garde jazz scene in Chicago. At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". Great to have back on reissue! CD

A beautiful pairing – the keyboards of Bill Evans and harmonica of Toots Thielemans – presented here in a space that marks the record as one of the best from both players in the 70s! Some tunes are sad and blue, and very spare – others a bit more upbeat and lyrical, almost taking us back to Bill's more sprightly modes of the early 60s – and the clear, clean sound offers up the best tones from both players in a perfect space. Other musicians include Marc Johnson on bass, Eliot Zigmund on drums, and Larry Schneider on flute, tenor, and soprano sax – and Evans plays a bit of electric piano in addition to acoustic, something we always love! Titles include "I Do It For Your Love", "The Days Of Wine & Roses", "Jesus' Last Ballad", "The Other Side Of Midnight", "Blue & Green", and "Tomato Kiss". CD

The first album ever from The Faces – a mighty merger of half of the old Small Faces with the young Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, fresh from the Jeff Beck group! The meeting of talents really set The Faces on fire – bringing even sharper focus to the group's previous sound, and giving it a stellar frontman in the face of Stewart – who was still brilliantly soulful here, and way far from all the cliches he'd spew in later years! The guitars are fantastic, the rhythms very raw – and the whole record romps along with this messy blend of rootsy elements and garagey power – never letting up the sonic onslaught for a minute. In the US, Warner still tried to market the group by using "Small Faces" on the cover – but trust us, the sound is way different than before – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Stone", "Around The Plynth", "Looking Out The Window", "Nobody Knows", "Wicked Messenger", and the classic "Three Button Hand Me Down". The second long player by The Faces – and one of their best! The group hits a real peak on Long Player, balancing real emotional grit with their unrivaled rock swagger – and they're just flat out fierce on the best songs here! On one hand, there grooving along so loosely that it feels like it could fall apart at any moment, but the the intensity of the rhythms and the force of Rod's vocals keep it all together. Exhilarating stuff! Includes "Bad N' Ruin", "Tell Everyone", "Sweet Lady Mary", one of the best-ever covers of "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Had A Real Good Time", "On The Beach", a rollicking version of Big Bill Broonzy's "I Feel So Good" and more. The third album from The Faces and a straight up masterpiece of charismatic, sweaty, swaggery early 70s rock and roll! We were pretty late in acknowledging the badassery of Rod Stewart during this period, both solo and with The Faces, and boy does this record ever sound amazing to us now! The love these Brits have for soul, rhythm and blues is real, too – which makes it work on a deeper level. Warner, 2009. Used 2CD & DVD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A late masterpiece from the Flaming Lips – one of their most unique and uncompromising records since they became leftfield hitmakers – and a record that works best as a whole! Embryonic is a grower, and the first record since The Soft Bulletin which, to our ears anyway, doesn't seem to have any illusions of a crossover ready single in the lineup. It's really a space rock record with fuzzy guitars and echoing noisiness, and a confident step out of "Do You Realize?" style speaks-to-everyone art pop, and into more of a dissonant, messy sound. It's a real thrill for us to see a longtime favorite not only get over into the mainstream consciousness and stay there for years, but to continue to challenge and innovate while they're hanging out there. Titles include "Convinced Of The Hex", "The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine", "Evil", "Aquarius Sabotage", "See The Leaves", "Your Bats", "Powerless", "Scorpio Sword", "Watching The Planets" and more. Warner, 1980. Used ... $9.99
Warm vocals, jazzy keyboards, and a wonderfully laidback set from Michael Franks – a perfect illustration of the kind of music he could make better than anyone else! Although recorded at the end of the 70s, the set's got a simplicity that few other records of the time could match – a stripped-down and honest quality that really sparkles, even amidst the top-shelf production and studio work supplied by Warner Brothers Records. Arrangements here are by Larry Williams, Clare Fischer, and others – but as before, the main focus is usually on the sweet vocals and keyboards – gliding out warmly over Michael Franks' well-penned and unique compositions. Titles include "One Bad Habit", "Still Life", "Loving You More & More", "Baseball", "Inside You", "Lotus Blossom", "He Tells Himself He's Happy", and "On My Way Home To You". CD

Warner, 1977. Used ... $5.99
A really brilliant little record – one of those gems that you've probably passed by so many times because it's ubiquitous, but which never fails to please over the years! Forget any pre-conceived notions you might have about Michael Franks, because at this early point in his career the man is a genre unto himself – working in a unique blend of jazz, pop, and a bit of soul – always served up sparely and with a great deal of understatement, but still filled with plenty of personal spirit on the lyrics. Franks' voice is beautifully compressed into the rest of the instrumentation by Tommy LiPuma – in a style that still holds up wonderfully over the years, and which is set to Claus Ogerman arrangements that make plenty great use of keyboards from Joe Sample of The Crusaders! Tunes are all originals by Franks – and there's some especially great Brazilian touches on the numbers "Antonio's Song" and "Down In Brazil". Other titles include "The Lady Wants To Know", "I Really Hope It's You", "Chain Reaction", and "In The Eye Of The Storm". CD

Arrangements this time around are by John Simon, and the session features plenty of jazzy work by Ben Riley, Seldon Powell, Bucky Pizzarelli, Flora Purim, Kenny Barron, and many others. A surprisingly wonderful record! Back in the day, we remember that we didn't like these later P-Funk albums because they weren't as druggy, trippy, or guitar heavy as the early stuff. Now, though, they sound pretty darn sweet to our ears – especially this one, which has lots of cool pre-electro grooves with sweet keyboards, vocoder vocals, and spacey basslines that blow out in deep rich waves of funky soul. The whole thing's an amazing evolution of the George Clinton groove – and titles include "Electric Spanking Of War Babies", "Funk Gets Stronger", "Shockwaves", "Icka-prick", "Brettino's Bounce", and a bonus instrumental version of "Electric Spanking Of War Babies". One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all! There's a sense of perfection to everything here – one that really gets the group past their tripped-out early years, and firmly into the sublime territory George Clinton hit with Parliament – an amazing sound that's wrapped up perfectly on every single track – grooves that definitely raised the bar for a huge amount of mainstream funk acts who were popping up at the time. Production is never too slick, and there's still lots of tasty guitar licks wrapped up in the mix – and titles include the classics "Freak Of The Week" and "Not Just Knee Deep" – plus "Field Maneuvers", "Holly Wants To Go To California", and "Foot Soldiers". Warner, 1977/1981. Used ... $5.99
A collection of two albums that Joao Gilberto did for Warner Brothers in the late 70s/early 80s. Amoroso is some pretty sweet stuff from Joao Gilberto – featuring a core jazz combo playing along with a larger set of arrangements, in a manner that's similar to some of Jobim's work from the 70s. The album features a nice vocal version of Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", plus the tracks "Estate", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". On Brasil, Joao Gilberto meets the younger generation of Brazilian vocalists – Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania – and the four of them lay down some nice jazzy stuff, with all the vocals weaving in and out. Tracks are nice and long, and titles include "Cordeiro De Nana", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Milagre", and "Bahia Com H". Johnny Mandel conducted, and Joao produced. CD

A definite victory for Larry Graham – an album that really put him on top of the early 80s mainstream soul crowd with a great mix of styles! Some of the tunes here are in the bouncy, bubbly mode you might expect from Larry's 70s work – but they're also tuned a bit more towards an 80s groove – basslines brought up from the bottom, and other instrumentation turned towards a clean, lean sound. Other tracks have Graham hitting some of the mellower modes of his Just Be My Lady record – a mature romantic style that showed a whole new side of his talents in this decade. Production, arrangements, and most of the songwriting is handled by Larry – and titles include "You've Been", "Just Call My Name", "I Never Forgot Your Eyes", "Baby", "I'd Rather Be Loving You", and "Victory". The long strange trip the Grateful Dead began with Warner Bros in the late 60s culminated in this concise, pretty darn solid attempt at an early Best Of, appropriately called Skeletons In The Closet! The Dead would never be best known for their studio recordings, but this really is a good reminder that the band wrote and recorded a lot of wonderful songs in their heyday that feel uniquely, distinctively Dead even in the 3 to 6 minute studio versions. It's a worthy reminder of that for eternal fans, and an even better gateway to Dead fandom for newcomers. One of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". The pieces cover a pretty far range of styles – from the meandering and mellow Jarrett piano that begins "Birth", to the wonderful, heaving funky bass work on "Mortgage On My Soul (Wah Wah)" – which also includes some squalling soprano sax by Jarrett, who gives the piano a rest for this wild tune! Later on the album, he picks up a banjo, too! Other tracks include "Spirit", "Forget Your Memories (And They'll Remind You)" and "Remorse". CD

A sweet 80s groover fro Chaka Khan – one that features a fair bit of beats and bassline – thanks to tight production from Prince, Chris Jasper, and Russ Titelman! Russ is actually the man behind most of the set – and he really shows off his great talent for a hook-heavy soul tune – keeping things relatively electro overall, but always letting Chaka be the star of the show with her wonderfully warm vocals – still soaring out every bit as much as in her previous work with Arif Mardin, and maybe even more essential in this setting! Warner (Japan), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn wonderful solo work from Chaka Khan – a record that holds onto all the best funky elements of her 70s music with Rufus – but also finds a way to put the lady even more strongly out front! There's maybe a bit more of a clubby vibe here than before, but never in a cheesy or commercial way – as the mighty Arif Mardin is at the production helm, and arguably does an even better job with Chaka than on his classic productions for Aretha Franklin! The vocals soar out beautifully, but the grooves are every bit as great – with these warm jazzy touches that make the album instantly seductive – and a level of sophistication that's kept this one strong for many many years. Titles include the wonderful stepper "Any Old Sunday", plus "We Got Each Other", "We Can Work It Out", "Night Moods", "What Cha Gonna Do For Me", and "Father He Said" – plus "I Know You, I Live You", a big Chicago house cut from the old days.
