✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Jazz & Soul – From The Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
WEA (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... $9.99
Tripped out jazz and funk! This great little set features some gems from the late 60s/early 70s years at Atlantic, Warner, and Elektra – and has a focus on tunes that draw more than a bit of influence from the fuzzed-out, long-haired late 60s scene. You're bound to recognize a few of the names on the set – but what you'll really appreciate is the way the tunes come together, grooving hard with a mixture of heavy jazz and trippy elements – staying soulful in most parts, and even hitting a bit of funk at just the right moments! Titles include "Back Home" by Yusef Lateef, "Threnody For Sharon Tate" by Freddie Hubbard, "Smoke Signals" by Eddie Harris, "Sorcery" by Charles Lloyd, "Mirror" by Charlie Mariano, "Raymond Winchester" by Yusef Lateef, "Freaks For The Festival" by Roland Kirk, "Vibrafinger" by Gary Burton, and "Spontaneous Simplicity" by Sun Ra. ✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Jazz & Soul 2 – More Psychedelic Jazz & Soul From The Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
WEA (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Tripped out grooves from one of our favorite musical eras – that end of the 60s time when people were letting their hair down, opening up their styles, and really creating some crazy work! As the title would imply, the collection's filled with mind-expanding jazz and soul tunes – often electric, and with subtle funky touches that go way past the obvious in search of groove-driven Nirvana! The assortment of artists is great – with killer cuts from bigger names, and some surprising gems from others that we wouldn't have thought of – all packaged with a great cover and tasty notes on the tunes. Titles include "Land Of 1000 Dances" by Nino & April, "Mortgage On My Soul" by Keith Jarrett, "Live Right Now" and "Lonely Is Today" by Eddie Harris, "Hang Em Up" by Freddie Hubbard, "It Ain't What You Do" by J Geils Band, "Chica Boom" by Jimmy & Vella, "Hideaway" by Freddie King, and "The Brain Of Oskar Panizza" by Michael Bundt. ✨✧ VariousStoned Soul Picnic – Illicit Grooves From the Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
WEA (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Here's a picnic we'd love to partake of – a wonderfully trippy set of jazz grooves from the heyday of the Atlantic and Warner funk years! The set pulls together a wealth of obscure numbers from older albums and singles – going for tunes that have a slightly psychedelic approach to the music, building on groovy soul jazz by adding in some of the weirder, wilder instrumentation that started to creep up in the late 60s. The result is really great stuff – tunes that start to groove towards 70s funk, but which also have an expansive consciousness of their own – taking earlier riffs by Cannonball and Herbie, and blowing them up a lot more with some really freewheeling performances! Titles include "The Ringer" and "Stoned Soul Picnic" by Roy Ayers, "Las Vegas Tango" by Gary Burton, "Stuff" by Chris Towns & The Townsmen, "Pharoah's Gold" by David Newman, "Universal Mother" by Don Cherry, "Stoned Soul" by Artie Christopher, "That Mellow Feeling" by Junior Mance, "Doin What I Wanna" by Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers, "Cantaloupe Island" by Nat Adderley, "Us" by Les McCann, and "Shop Talk" by Cold Blood. Ashford & SimpsonStay Free ... CD
Warner, 1979. Used ... $6.99
Great stuff! From Motown songwriters to world-class superstars, the trip was a well-deserved one for Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford – and this album's perhaps their crowning achievement in sophisticated club soul! The record's got a great groove that offers a more soulful version of disco than most of the competing albums on major labels at the time – a perfect summation of the care and craft that Ashford & Simpson had always put into their music right from the start! The pair handle all production on the record, and also contributed all the songs too – and the whole thing's so wonderfully tight, right, and on the money, the album soars to the top even before the vocals come into the mix. Titles include more than a few club classics, like "Found A Cure", "Stay Free", and "Nobody Knows" – plus the cuts "Dance Forever", "Crazy", "Follow Your Heart", and "Finally Got To Me". CD

Warner, 1976. Used ... $2.99
A super huge hit for George – the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar! The album features George playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, ones that mix together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation". The fourth nearly flawless album of heavy genius from Black Sabbath – featuring some of the mightiest rock riffs ever! Vol 4 is just the tiniest of notches below Master Of Reality and Paranoid in overall greatness – which is the tiniest of possible complaints given that those previous two albums are among the few truly perfect rock and roll albums ever recorded! But this one has "Supernaut". Enough said. Other titles include "Wheels Of Confusion", "Tomorrows Dreams", "Changes", "FX", "Snowblind", "Cornucopia", "Under The Sun" and more. CD

Bootsy's Rubber BandAhh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! ... CD
Warner, 1977. Used ... $4.99
Massive work from Bootsy Collins – one of his best-ever solo albums, and a perfect summation of the P-Funk groove – focused strongly through Bootsy's own sense of stardom! George Clinton worked with Collins on production, and the album's as tight as the best Parliament or Funkadelic work of the time – particularly the latter on their killer 70s sides for Warner, which was also the home for Bootsy. The Horny Horns are helping out on this one, which gives the album a strong instrumental drive – but the real star is Bootsy, whose sexy vocals and good sense of soul keep things firmly on track throughout. Features the cuts "What's A Telephone Bill?", "Munchies For Your Love", "We Want Bootsy", "The Pinocchio Theory", and "Rubber Duckie". CD

Bootsy CollinsBootsy? Player Of The Year ... CD
Warner, 1978. Used ... $4.99
What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth sly slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years, and in later sampling hip hop ones. The record's got a sophisticated soul approach that moves the music way past slapped basslines and funny glasses – and thanks to top-line musicianship, including some help from Fred Wesley, Bootsy avoids any cliches that might have buried this one under the mountain of P-Funk albums hitting the market at the same time. Includes the monster track "Hollywood Squares" – plus "May The Force Be With You", "Very Yes", "Bootsy?", and "Bootzilla". CD

CrackinSpecial Touch ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1978. Used ... $9.99
Crackin definitely have a special touch on this 70s set – a way of mixing together funk, soul, and jazz influences – all in a groove that's every bit as tight as contemporaries like Rufus or Average White Band, even though Crackin never reached the heights that they did! The core instrumentation is always right on the money, and never too overproduced – letting guitars and keyboards lay out the groove, then bringing in vocals from Leslie Smith and Arno Lucas, both great singers who sound especially nice when they come together. Tunes are wonderfully written – quite memorable, without ever sounding like commercial hits – and titles include "Nobody Else", "Double Love", "Too Young", "I Could Be Anything", "Don't Cha Love Me", "In Between", and "Kalalee". ✨✧ Randy CrawfordDon't Say It's Over ... CD
Warner, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great mix of jazz and soul from Randy Crawford – and a 90s set that almost takes us back to the best sounds of her early career in the 70s! The work here is nicely relaxed – not trying for a hit, even when things are smooth or a bit uptempo – especially given the mis-steps that Randy might have made with some of the mainstream genres of the time. A few cuts feature nicely restrained instrumentation – especially Crawford's leadoff duet with pianist Lou Levy on a version of "I'm Glad There Is You". Other tracks include "In My Life", "Why Can't We Take A Chance", "Year After Year", "Mad Over You", "Don't Say It's Over", and "Can We Bring It Back". CD

Randy CrawfordNow We May Begin ... CD
Warner (France), 1980. Used ... $9.99
A great little album cut by Randy during the height of her career! She'd just broken big with her vocals on "Street Life" by the Crusaders – and although that track's not on here, the Crusaders team of Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, and Joe Sample produced the album, and have given it a very similar sound to that track. There's a few weak moments where Randy's singing in a mellower style that lets her voice wobble a bit too much – but the stronger tracks have a good jazz funk groove, and these include "Blue Flame", "Last Night At Danceland", and "My Heart Is Not As Young As It Used To Be". Julee CruiseFloating Into The Night ... CD
Warner, 1989. Used ... $2.99
A haunting debut from singer Julee Cruise – collaborating with filmmaker/songwriter/producer David Lynch and his Twin Peaks soundtrack composer Angelo Badalamenti! The album was underappreciated at the time, perhaps because its loose connection to Lynch's Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet was too big of a pop culture hurdle for critical minds to clear, but it really deserves a reassessment. The mix of nostalgic 50s ballroom pop and ethereal modern dream pop is unique, kind of otherworldly, and Julee's gorgeous vocals carry it over with style to spare. Wierd and beautiful – there's really nothing else like it! Titles include "Floating", "Falling", "I Remember", "Mysteries Of Love", "Into The Night", "I Float Alone", "The Swan", "The World Spins" and more. CD

Warner, Late 80s. Used ... $3.99
Late live work from Miles Davis – a collection of material recorded in various concert settings during the last few years of the 80s – pulled together as a double-length tribute the trumpeter after he passed away! The quality of the performances here is great – very similar to some of Miles' early 80s work for Columbia, especially his great 2LP live set for them – and the players on the tracks vary a bit, given the setting – and include Adam Holzman, Joey DeFrancesco, and Robert Irving III on keyboards – plus Kenny Garrett on alto and flute, Benny Rietveld and Foley on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, and Marilyn Mazur on percussion. Titles include "Hannibal", "New Blues", "Intruder", "Time After Time", "Human Nature", "Full Nelson", "Wrinkle", and "Amandla". CD

Paul Desmond & Jim HallFirst Place Again (with bonus track) ... CD
Warner/Gambit (Spain), 1959. Used ... $16.99
The first big Paul Desmond solo album of the 60s – and a standout set that's very much in the tradition of his best work on RCA! This rare side was cut for Warner Brothers during a time when they were taking a brief dip into jazz – and it's a rarely-heard set that features Jim Hall on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Percy Heath on bass, all backing up Paul with a spare "after hours" sound that's a marked change from his tightly woven work with Brubeck. Desmond's alto is full of possibilities here – working wonders with familiar tunes like "Greensleeves", "You Go To My Head", "Time After Time", and "East Of The Sun" – as well as with the John Lewis modern number "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West". CD also features the bonus track "Susie". CD

A surprisingly wonderful record! Back in the day, we remember that we didn't like these later P-Funk albums because they weren't as druggy, trippy, or guitar heavy as the early stuff. Now, though, they sound pretty darn sweet to our ears – especially this one, which has lots of cool pre-electro grooves with sweet keyboards, vocoder vocals, and spacey basslines that blow out in deep rich waves of funky soul. The whole thing's an amazing evolution of the George Clinton groove – and titles include "Electric Spanking Of War Babies", "Funk Gets Stronger", "Shockwaves", "Icka-prick", "Brettino's Bounce", and a bonus instrumental version of "Electric Spanking Of War Babies". One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all! There's a sense of perfection to everything here – one that really gets the group past their tripped-out early years, and firmly into the sublime territory George Clinton hit with Parliament – an amazing sound that's wrapped up perfectly on every single track – grooves that definitely raised the bar for a huge amount of mainstream funk acts who were popping up at the time. Production is never too slick, and there's still lots of tasty guitar licks wrapped up in the mix – and titles include the classics "Freak Of The Week" and "Not Just Knee Deep" – plus "Field Maneuvers", "Holly Wants To Go To California", and "Foot Soldiers". Warner/Collectables, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Larry Graham's opening his sound up a fair bit for this one – bringing in a bit more of a rock influence than before, and letting the guitars fly all over the tunes! The style's one that's almost got a bit of a pre-Prince influence – more tightly poppy in the construction of the soul, and with a good crossover sound that might have earned Graham some of the "radio" in the title. Tracks include the tightly stepping groover "Is It Love", which has a great west coast slow funk approach, the P-Funky "Are You Happy", and the jazzy "Turn It Out", which has some particularly nice bass work. Other tracks include "Pow", "Boogie Witcha Baby", and "Mr Friend". CD

Larry Graham's still burning strong here – resisting the temptation to go disco that you might guess from the "dance" in the title, and if anything, pulling up the bass-heavy funk even more! The set's got a super-tight feel that's kind of a distillation of the successful Graham Central Station sound of earlier albums, but still comes together perfectly overall – in a mode that's clearly having a huge influence on the rest of west coast funk. Warner, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
The long strange trip the Grateful Dead began with Warner Bros in the late 60s culminated in this concise, pretty darn solid attempt at an early Best Of, appropriately called Skeletons In The Closet! The Dead would never be best known for their studio recordings, but this really is a good reminder that the band wrote and recorded a lot of wonderful songs in their heyday that feel uniquely, distinctively Dead even in the 3 to 6 minute studio versions. It's a worthy reminder of that for eternal fans, and an even better gateway to Dead fandom for newcomers. There really wasn't anything exactly like Jane's Addiction on a major label in their late 80s, very early 90s prime – and this first of 2 classic Warner albums from that early peak stand the test of time. Nothing's Shocking, then and now, is a strange mix of psychedelia and hard rock, weird enough to earn fans from the artier indie and college radio underbelly, and reach more mainstream hard rock fan – which really paved the way for 90s rock in ways they might not get enough credit for these days. The sound doesn't really get old, either. Includes the classic "Jane Says", plus "Idiots Rule", "Mountain Song", "Summertime Rolls", "Ted Just Admit It", and "Had A Dad". CD

Antonio Carlos JobimTerra Brasilis ... CD
Warner, 1980. Used ... $5.99
Pretty great sounds from the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim – an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that's pretty darn compelling! The album features larger orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, and in a way, it's similar to the Jobim album on Decca from 1973 (aka Maita Pere) – in that it's got all the simple elements of Jobim's earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we'd rank right up there with the modernist work of Gil Evans or Duke Ellington. A few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you'll hear English versions of some older bossa tunes. Warner/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1988. Used ... $8.99
A sweet 80s groover fro Chaka Khan – one that features a fair bit of beats and bassline – thanks to tight production from Prince, Chris Jasper, and Russ Titelman! Russ is actually the man behind most of the set – and he really shows off his great talent for a hook-heavy soul tune – keeping things relatively electro overall, but always letting Chaka be the star of the show with her wonderfully warm vocals – still soaring out every bit as much as in her previous work with Arif Mardin, and maybe even more essential in this setting! Titles include "Soul Talkin", "Sticky Wicked", "The End Of A Love Affair", "Make It Last", "I'll Be Around", and "Signed Sealed Delivered". CD

Chaka KhanWhat Cha' Gonna Do For Me (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1981. Used ... $6.99
Damn wonderful solo work from Chaka Khan – a record that holds onto all the best funky elements of her 70s music with Rufus – but also finds a way to put the lady even more strongly out front! There's maybe a bit more of a clubby vibe here than before, but never in a cheesy or commercial way – as the mighty Arif Mardin is at the production helm, and arguably does an even better job with Chaka than on his classic productions for Aretha Franklin! The vocals soar out beautifully, but the grooves are every bit as great – with these warm jazzy touches that make the album instantly seductive – and a level of sophistication that's kept this one strong for many many years. Titles include the wonderful stepper "Any Old Sunday", plus "We Got Each Other", "We Can Work It Out", "Night Moods", "What Cha Gonna Do For Me", and "Father He Said" – plus "I Know You, I Live You", a big Chicago house cut from the old days. MatrixWizard ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1978. Used ... $4.99
There's a wizard on the cover, but the set's way more fusion than fantasy – tightly jamming work from Matrix, a combo who shone brightly at the end of the 70s! There's more horns here than you'd find in the usual fusion group – as the group's a nonet, with Larry Darling and Jeff Pietrangelo on trumpets, Kurt Dietrich on trombone, Mike Hale on flugelhorn and trumpet, John Kirchberger on sax and flute, and Brad McDougall on trombone. John Harmon plays keyboards – both acoustic and electric – and some of the other group members handle keys as well. Titles include "Spring", "Mountolive", "Brown Boy", "Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder", and "Wizard". CD

MazeBack To Basics ... CD
Warner, 1993. Used ... $2.99
A really well-titled set from Frankie Beverly & Maze – as the album takes the group right back to the mellow-stepping sound that first made them great back in the 70s! Production's a bit more updated, but still very laidback – and there's a smoothly-grooving glow to the record we totally love – a perfect format for Frankie's always-amazing vocals, updated just slightly for the 90s. The production values are never too polished, and the songwriting is still great – on titles that include "Love Is", "the Morning After", "Laid Back Girl", 'What Goes Up", "In Time", "All Night Long", "Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", and "Twilight". MazeSilky Soul ... CD
Warner, 1989. Used ... $1.99
Silky soul indeed from the great Frankie Beverly – a late 80s album, but one that has the smooth soul genius very much at the top of his game! Frankie's work from the 70s inspired countless imitators in the next decade – but after so many other male singers trying to cop his game, Beverly can still do it better than the rest – with this easygoing, effortless style that's never commercial or cheesy – and which continues to raise the bar for sophisticated soul! Grooves are mostly in that perfect midtempo stepping style that seems to work best for Frankie – and the overall instrumentation and production are far more timeless than some of the other big records of the period – with a style that places the set very strongly in the best Maze tradition. Titles include "Can't Get Over You", "Silky Soul", "Just Us", "Love's On The Run", "Mandela", and "Songs Of Love". CD

MursMurs For President ... CD
Warner, 2008. Used ... $4.99
One of the kings of indie hip hop moves to the majors for his campaign for president – the mighty Murs – with production by 9th Wonder, Scoop DeVille, Nottz and others – plus unlikely guest appearances by Snoop Dogg & Will I Am. Murs can be a little preachy, but the funky hip hop pop productions work as a good counter balance for that, and with tracks this catchy we won't complain! Good stuff. Tracks include "I'm Innocent", "Lookin' Fly" feat Will I Am, "Can It Be", "Everything", "Sooo Comfortable", "Think You Know Me", "Me And This Jawn", "Time Is Now" feat Snoop Dogg, "A Part Of Me", "Breakthrough" and more. ✨✧ PrinceControversy ... CD
Warner, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic Prince – an album that signaled an end to the first part of Prince's storied career, leaning heavily on his fascination with new wave, mixed with the r&b grooves and 70s funk of his earliest LPs. Prince is definitely in a transitional mode here, the easy politics of the punk era – "Ronnie Talk To Russia", "Controversy" – are less controversial than Prince's frank sexuality on the record – best heard on tracks like "Jack U Off", "Do Me, Baby", and "Sexuality" – but the unbeatable pop groove of the title cut definitely points the way to Prince's big chart success to come. David SanbornSanborn ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1976. Used ... $8.99
A damn great early moment from David Sanborn – a record that really shows the reedman at his best – working some tight solos over soulful backings in the same 70s manner as Tom Scott or Wilton Felder! Like both of those players, David's got the chops to step out in front of the backings strongly – blowing some of his best notes with surprisingly little flourish, and crafting a soulful lead that's supported by work from Hiram Bullock on guitar, Rosalinda De Leon on keyboards, and Victor Lewis on drums. There's a bit of vocals on the album – courtesy of Patti Austin, Lain Groves, Phoebe Snow, and Paul Simon – and titles include "Indio", "Smile", "Concrete Boogie", "Mamacita", and "7th Ave". CD

Warner/Vivid (Japan), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
Percolating 80s soul from Sherrick – set to some catchy arrangements of keyboards, bass pedals, and synth drums! The approach here is surprisingly strong for the time, with a groove that's a bit more in the initial 80s groove style of the earlier part of the decade, and quite unusual for Warner Brothers at this point. The mellow cuts are nice, too, with a sweetly seductive quality that lingers long after the lyrics have left. Titles include "All Because Of You", "Baby I'm For Real", "Just Call", "Tell Me What It Is", "This Must Be Love", and "Let's Be Lovers Tonight". CD

Paul Simon's mid 80s landmark – a record that brought together Simon's unique voice and pop folk songwriting skill with South African, Chicano, zydeco other global musical styles – held together by some of the best songs Simon ever put together! With lesser material, this would feel like the well-intentioned "world music" album by an aging star, but Simon transcends that in a big way with catchy, intelligent songs and expert production. Includes "The Boy In The Bubble", "Graceland", "Duanonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes", "You Can Call Me Al", "Under African Skyes", "All Around The World Or The Myth Of Fingerprints" and more. CD

Warner, 1982. Used ... $5.99
The second essential LP from the Time that would solidify Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' position as a force to be dealt within commercial R&B for years to come, cut during the early 80s, when Minneapolis seemed like it was exploding at the seams with great music. With Morris Day's nice extended dance cut "The Walk" featuring a nice popping beat, plus the excellent and very Prince sounding slow jam "Gigolo's Get Lonely Too" and the percolating pre-New Jack funk of "777-9311". Warner, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the harder funk albums by Tower Of Power – done with a hard-driving horn-heavy groove, slathered up in East Bay Grease! The group's got a bit of the stoner funk sound that shows their Bay Area roots, but they're also a lot tighter than most of their California contemporaries, and feel more like some of the groups coming out of Memphis and Muscle Shoals at the same time. Lenny Williams is on lead vocals, Chester Thompson plays organ – and tracks include "Soul Vaccination", "What Is Hip", "So Very Hard To Go", "Just Another Day", "Clean Slate", "Get Yo' Feet Back On The Ground", and "Clever Girl".
