✨✧ Vince GuaraldiComplete Warner Brothers/Seven Arts Recordings (Oh Good Grief/Eclectic/Alma-Ville/bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Omnivore, 1968/1969. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A trio of wonderful records – plus rare bonus tracks too! First up is the classic Oh Good Grief – one of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi nicely expands Vince's sound of earlier years – by taking his lyrical piano groove and adding in a bit of electric harpsichord – plus slightly larger arrangements that feature a bit of electric bass, guitar, and just the right light touches of strings. The resulting sound is wonderful – as deeply reflective as some of Vince's better-known work, but with some cool late 60s touches that really give the album a fresh kind of feel. And heck, Vince even sings on 2 Tim Hardin tracks – "Black Sheep Boy" and "Reason To Believe" – using a great raspy style of vocals that we didn't even know he had! Other titles include a great electric version of "The Beat Goes On", plus cool originals "Nobody Else", "Coffee and Doe-Nuts", and "Lucifer's Lady". Alma-Ville was cut during Vince's late 60s hipster phase – and it combines work on piano with a bit of electric playing, plus hip LA arrangements that include drums by Dom Um Romao, guitar by Herb Ellis, and added percussion by Rubens Bassini. Tracks are mostly originals – short groovers and sing-song numbers, a lot cooler than some of Vince's earlier work – all dancing along in a sweetly breezy groove that makes for a heck of a delightful little album! Titles include "Rio From The Air", "Cristo Redentor", "Uno Y Uno", "Detained In San Ysidro", "Jambos", "Alma Ville", and "The Masked Marvel". 2CD set features 4 bonus tracks – "Oh Happy Day", "The Sharecropper's Daughter", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose (take 15)", and 'The BEat Goes On (alt take 14)". ✨✧ VariousWhat It Is – Funky Soul & Rare Grooves From The Vaults Of Atlantic, Atco & Warner Bros Records 1967 to 1977 (4CD box set) ... CD
Rhino, Late 60s/1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest box sets we've ever seen – and amazingly issued by an American major label! The 4CD package is a treasure trove of funky work from a decade of Warner Brothers, Atlantic Records, and related labels – tunes pulled both from mainstream album releases and much more obscure 45s – all expertly collected here into a whopping batch of 91 tracks, all packaged in a cool little box with an 80 page booklet! This one goes way past some of the silly "decade" sets from Rhino, and really displays a new level of cool and connoisseurship – one that finally appreciates the rich depths of funky work at their fingertips, most of which has not been properly reissued in the US! Titles include "Almendra" by Macondo, "Goin Down" by Allen Toussaint, "Wah Wah Man" by Young Holt Unlimited, "Spinning Wheel" by Wade Marcus, "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters, "What's So Never The Dance (parts 1 & 2)" by Houseguests, "8 Days On The Road" by Howard Tate, "Getting Uptown" by United 8, "Wanoah" by Black Heat, "Let It Crawl" by Society's Bag, "Flute Thing" by Seatrain, "Try It Again" by Bobby Byrd, "Funky To The Bone" by Freddi Henchi & The Soul Setters, "Improve" by Darrow Fletcher, "Rien Ne Va Plus" by Funk Factory, "Gossip" by Cyril Neville, "Spreadin Honey" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, "Stoned Soul" by Artie Christopher, "Sexy Coffee Pot" by Tony Alvon & The Belaires, "Tampin" by The Rhine Oaks, "Jan Jan" by The Fabulous Counts, "Sing A Simple Song" by The Noble Knights, "It's All In Your Mind" by Soul Angels, "Funky John" by Johnny Cameron, "Don't Come Around Here Any More" by Mark Putney, "Keep On Dancing" by The Commodores, "Right On Brother (part 1)" by South Shore Commission, "Pop Popcorn Children" by Eldridge Holmes, and "The Deacon" by Brute Force. ✨✧ Ashford & SimpsonPerformance ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An expanded double-length set from Ashford & Simpson – one that features three sides of live material, plus some great studio work as well! The concert material makes up the core of the album – a really wonderful demonstration of the genius of Nick and Valerie away from the studio – still every bit as tight as on previous Warner albums, with perhaps an even more jaw-dropping appreciation of their talents – given the way they put things together on a stage! Things are nicely changed up – some cuts extended, some shortened, and the duo are clearly as great of live entertainers as they are in the studio – if we can judge from the crowd response. Live cuts include "Don't Cost You Nothing", "Landlord/Clouds/The Boss/Is It Still Good To Ya", "Love Don't Make It Right", "Bourgie Bourgie (inst)", "Nobody Knows", "You're All I Need/Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing/Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and "It Seems To Hang On". Studio cuts are great too – and include "It Shows In The Eyes", "It's The Long Run", and "Come On Pretty Baby". CD

✨✧ AvalanchesSki Surfin ... CD
Warner/Collectors Choice, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not a surf record, but a ski record – one recorded in a style that's very much in the best surf instrumental mode of the time – with guitars from Tommy Tedesco and Billy Strange, plus super-tight drums from the legendary Hal Blaine! Given the power of the group in the studio, the sound is plenty darn great – tightly focused and very well recorded at Gold Star Studios – with a sound that's arguably even better than most of the other straight surf groups on the market at the time. A few tracks are surf-styled versions of "winter" tunes – like "Canadian Sunset", "Sleigh Ride", "Baby It's Cold Outside", and "Winter Wonderland" – and others are originals, or familiar covers redone. Additional titles include "Avalanche", "Ski Surfin", "Winter Evening Nocturne", and "Midnight Sun". CD

✨✧ BandLast Waltz (4CD box set) ... CD
Warner, 1978. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most iconic rock and roll shows of all time – the late 70s farewell to The Band – and quite famously, much more final concert by an esteemed band, it's actually a rock, pop, folk, blues and soul summit that features The Band as the house band. This landmark document of the event has always been one of rock's more opulent releases – but this 4CD box set edition nearly doubles the original 1978 release – including more tracks with Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John – plus other previously unreleased Band-only tunes, rehearsal pieces and more. The last version of the Last Waltz you'll ever need! (Probably. . .right?) 54 tracks on 4CDs: "The From The Last Waltz", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Shape I'm In", "Down In South New Orleans" with Bobby Charles, "Forever Young" with Bob Dylan, "I Shall Be Released (Finale)", "Rag Mama Rag", "Further Up The Road" with Eric Clapton, "Dry Your Eyes" with Eric Clapton, "Evangeline" with Emmylou Harris, "The Weight" with The Staples", "Caravan" with Van Morrison, "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "Shadows And Light" with Joni Mitchell, "This Wheel's On Fire", "Caldonia" with Muddy Waters and much more! Warner, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A super huge hit for George – the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar! The album features George playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, ones that mix together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation". Warner, 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Yipes! This one made everyone a bucket of money – especially Quincy Jones, whose new Qwest imprint the record was one of the first to grace. George has come a long way from his roots with Jack McDuff here – but in a way that kind of has us impressed, as he's grooving away slickly on guitar, laying down some smooth vocals that we never would have imagined from his mid 60s recordings. Includes the massive hit "Give Me The Night", a cover of "Moody's Mood", and the tracks "Star Of A Story (X)", "Midnight Love Affair", "What's On Your Mind", and "Dinorah, Dinorah". The sound of a million supermarkets and elevators during the 80s! CD

✨✧ George BensonIn Your Eyes ... CD
Warner, 1983. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweetly jazzy soul from George Benson – a key classic from his great run at Warner Brothers Records, and the kind of record that George did better than anyone else at the time! Back in the 60s, we'd never have guessed that Benson's sweetly crackling vocals would dominate popular jazz more than his great guitar work – but hearing George here, it's clear that his soul work could easily outshine his guitar, especially when set up in a package like this! Atlantic soul maestro Arif Mardin produced, and as with his Chaka Khan productions for Warner at the time, he gives Benson a clean, clear modern style that's certainly pop, but also a lot less cluttered and clunky than modes used with other artists at the time. George is mostly on the vocal tip for the set, and Kashif helps out on one track – no surprise, given that Kashif was soon to walk down the path that Benson had started with his first few vocal albums in the 70s. Titles include "Love Will Come Again", "Use Me", "Late At Night", "In Search Of A Dream", "Lady Love Me", "In Your Eyes", and "Never Too Far To Fall". CD

The fourth nearly flawless album of heavy genius from Black Sabbath – featuring some of the mightiest rock riffs ever! Vol 4 is just the tiniest of notches below Master Of Reality and Paranoid in overall greatness – which is the tiniest of possible complaints given that those previous two albums are among the few truly perfect rock and roll albums ever recorded! Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". CD

ChangeGlow Of Love ... CD
Warner, 1980. Used ... $6.99
The classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. The set's filled with sharp rhythms and sweet jazzy changes – and titles include the classics "The Glow Of Love" and "Searching", both with Luther, plus "Lover's Holiday", "Angel In My Pocket", and "The End". Warner, 1978. Used ... $7.99
A brilliant set of post-post-post Konitz jazz – a late 70s Warne Marsh session, produced by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan! Despite the smooth jazz feeling of Becker & Fagan's own work, the pair are completely respectful to Marsh and his twin-tenor frontman Pete Christlieb – recording them along with Lou Levy on piano, Jim Hughart on bass, and Nick Ceroli on drums, in a setting that's got a warm, acoustic feel. There's no tricks or electricity on the set – just a tight, angular approach to modern jazz – crafted in the twin-sax mode that Marsh recorded in often during the 50s. Titles include "Magnatism", "317 E 32nd", "Rapunzel", and "Tenors Of The Time". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Lunarcy", "Love Me", and "How About You". CD

Alice Cooper at his most sinister – crossing over big, but still keeping plenty of the lean, mean edge from the early days! The package does more than enough to live up to the hype that was building around Cooper at the time – building hip up as much as a baby-chopping monster as much as a hard Detroit rocker – and the album's filled with well-focused tunes that definitely helped propel hard rock into the American mainstream! Titles include the classic "No More Mr Nice Guy" – plus "Elected", "I Love The Dead", "Hello Hurray", "Sick Things", and "Billion Dollar Babies". CD

Pure early genius from Alice Cooper – a set that might not have been as big of a hit as some of his other early 70s albums, but which also shows the singer to be very much at the top of his game! Some of the tracks here follow familiar Cooper territory – sinister, hard-rocking energy with a no-nonsense approach – but there's also some deeper elements handled nicely by Bob Erzin – with qualities that now feel years ahead of their time, and maybe even an influence to later folks who never would have admitted such a link! Titles include the fantastic "Halo Of Flies" – plus "Under My Wheels", "Be My Lover", "You Drive Me Nervous", "Yeah Yeah Yeah", "Dead Babies", and "Killer". CD

Randy Crawford's working here with arrangements and production from Reggie Lucas – all very much in that sweet 80s style he was bringing to work with other artists at the time! There's plenty of beats, guitars, and keyboards in the instrumentation – pushing an overall sound that's more electric than some of Randy's jazzier sides from the early days. But Ms Crawford's vocals come out strongly on top of it all – with a poised presence that's clearly the main focus of the set. A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. As much of the recording here is overdubbed, with many multiple instruments played by Miller, it doesn't have the improvised vibe of Miles' classic performances, but the songwriting and arrangements are head and shoulders above much of the contemporary jazz being recorded at the time, Miles is in great form, and the glossy production sits better with us now than ever before. Warner/Bananastan, 1971. Used CD/DVD ... $11.99
A classic album of steel band grooving – a sound that made a surprising crossover in the American soul market in the early 70s! This album's one of the most famous of the genre – a session that was originally produced by Van Dyke Parks for Warner Brothers, and which has a nice blend of Caribbean and American soul styles. From our end, the highlight seems to be a cover of "I Want You Back", a cool groover that's done in a nice jangly way that works well with the steel drums. Other tracks include "Come To The Sunshine", a wonderful Van Dyke Parks composition that actually seems to be mixed here with some bits of the original recording – plus "Ride On Sammy", "Aquarium", "Sabre Dance", and an insane version of The Kinks' "Apeman". Also includes a bonus DVD – which documents the group's 1973 US tour, released here for the first time ever! CD

Bill's working here with a sound as sensitive and picturesque as the cover image – never pushing things too hard, but letting each tune unfold organically in waves of sound few other players could conjure up! Trio musicians include Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums – and titles on this first volume include "Quiet Now", "My Romance", "Noelle's Theme", "I Loves You Porgy", and "Up With The Lark". Everly BrothersRoots ... CD
Warner/Collectors Choice, 1968. Used ... $11.99
Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. ✨✧ FacesFirst Step ... CD
Warner, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album ever from The Faces – a mighty merger of half of the old Small Faces with the young Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, fresh from the Jeff Beck group! The meeting of talents really set The Faces on fire – bringing even sharper focus to the group's previous sound, and giving it a stellar frontman in the face of Stewart – who was still brilliantly soulful here, and way far from all the cliches he'd spew in later years! The guitars are fantastic, the rhythms very raw – and the whole record romps along with this messy blend of rootsy elements and garagey power – never letting up the sonic onslaught for a minute. In the US, Warner still tried to market the group by using "Small Faces" on the cover – but trust us, the sound is way different than before – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Stone", "Around The Plynth", "Looking Out The Window", "Nobody Knows", "Wicked Messenger", and the classic "Three Button Hand Me Down". The second long player by The Faces – and one of their best! The group hits a real peak on Long Player, balancing real emotional grit with their unrivaled rock swagger – and they're just flat out fierce on the best songs here! On one hand, there grooving along so loosely that it feels like it could fall apart at any moment, but the the intensity of the rhythms and the force of Rod's vocals keep it all together. Exhilarating stuff! Includes "Bad N' Ruin", "Tell Everyone", "Sweet Lady Mary", one of the best-ever covers of "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Had A Real Good Time", "On The Beach", a rollicking version of Big Bill Broonzy's "I Feel So Good" and more. The third album from The Faces and a straight up masterpiece of charismatic, sweaty, swaggery early 70s rock and roll! We were pretty late in acknowledging the badassery of Rod Stewart during this period, both solo and with The Faces, and boy does this record ever sound amazing to us now! The love these Brits have for soul, rhythm and blues is real, too – which makes it work on a deeper level. Titles Includes "Miss Judy's Farm", "You're So Rude", "Last Orders Please", "Love Lives Here", "Debris", a great cover of "Memphis", Too Bad" the breakthrough superhit "Stay With Me" and That's All You Need". Warner, 1982. Used ... $3.99
A bit of jazzy magic from Fagen – stepping out from the cover of Steely Dan after the Gaucho album, and sounding pretty darn great on his own! The record is almost nostalgic, going back to a 50s of Brubeck, abstract expressionism, and pre-Castro Havana – filled with images that are a bit less oblique than those of Fagen's work with Steely Dan, and a love for the subject matter that makes us like the record even more. Musically, the set follows strongly from Gaucho, but has perhaps a bit more straight jazz – and titles include "The Goodbye Look", "Walk Between Raindrops", "IGY", "Green Flower Street", and "New Frontier". One of the most classic albums of the 70s – a never-ending hit that's continued to inspire generations! Back in the early years of punk, we were thinking that Rumours was a record that would pass by quickly – but it turns out to have a fair bit more staying power than Never Mind The Bollocks – and continues to get new interest and new appreciation as the years go on! And, after decades, we're finally on board with the greatness of the record, and everything the group was going through, and put into the songs within – a classic lineup that includes "Dreams", "Don't Stop", "Never Going Back Again", "Go Your Own Way", "The Chain", "You Make Loving Fun", "Oh Daddy", and "Gold Dust Woman". A surprisingly wonderful record! Back in the day, we remember that we didn't like these later P-Funk albums because they weren't as druggy, trippy, or guitar heavy as the early stuff. Now, though, they sound pretty darn sweet to our ears – especially this one, which has lots of cool pre-electro grooves with sweet keyboards, vocoder vocals, and spacey basslines that blow out in deep rich waves of funky soul. The whole thing's an amazing evolution of the George Clinton groove – and titles include "Electric Spanking Of War Babies", "Funk Gets Stronger", "Shockwaves", "Icka-prick", "Brettino's Bounce", and a bonus instrumental version of "Electric Spanking Of War Babies". A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was bringing real magic to the records of pianist Bill Evans at the time – and music is by a core combo that includes American jazz musicians Ralph Grierson on keyboards and Grady Tate on drums – with some additional larger arrangements from Claus Ogerman, but used in a way that never clutters up the sound at all. Instead, Joao sounds beautiful right up front in the mix – with those sublime raspy vocals, and perfectly-placed lines on acoustic guitar – on titles that include a fabulous reading of "Estate", plus Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", and the tracks "Caminha Cruzados", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". Larry Graham and crew are definitely going for a fuller sound on this set – starting off the record with a funky marching band, in Tusk-like fashion – then rolling into some bass-heavy funk that tops even their previous records for tightness! The groove is a key element in the growth of west coast funk in the 70s – bass in the lead, but keyboards percolating in all over the place, in a style that's almost got touches of jazz – and which sets the stage for many of the Zapp-sounding projects of the future! A surprisingly great little record – and one we like almost better than the first few! Titles include "Love", "Mirror", "Entrow", "Do Yah", "Save Me", and "I Got A Reason". CD

The second album by Larry Graham and his Graham Central Station – and as powerful a batch of LA 70s funk as you'll ever find! Graham's bass is in the lead, giving the record the same deep punch he gave the work of Sly Stone back when he was in the Family Stone – but the whole group's pretty darn tight, and the album's got some great quirky elements that come through a strongly electrified use of keyboards and vocal processing next to the bass! Think of this one as the blueprint for countless LA funk records to come – and enjoy the original grooves in titles that include "Release Yourself", "Feel The Need", "Today", "Got To Go Through It To Get To It", and the "GCS" theme. One of the first giant hits by the Grateful Dead – and a record that has the group tightening things up a bit more, and stepping into some of the country-tinged territory of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers! Turns out, the move is a great one – as the songs come across with a real down to earth charm that maybe humanizes the group a bit more for the uninitiated listener – a mix of northern Cali pastoral with some of the musical dexterity they'd brought with them from the Haight – folded together perfectly, with a quality that's made the album one of their best-remembered over the decades. Warner/Rhino Handmade, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massively tripped-out set of guitar-based funk – played to perfection by the legendary Eddie Hazel, best known for his work in the George Clinton P-Funk empire! The album offers a different side of Eddie's talents – one that's produced with a smoothly compressed California groove, in a mode that's almost an extension of some of the themes explored by Shuggie Otis on his own 70s albums – taken with a bit more of a P-Funk style. George Clinton produced the set with Eddie – and the tunes have a nice slow-stepping groove that really opens up the guitar solos wonderfully. The record kicks off with a massive cover of "California Dreamin" – but the whole thing's great, with a wonderfully unified feel throughout! Other titles include "Frantic Moment", "What About It?", "So Goes The Story", "Physical Love", and a great cover of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Plus, the CD features 4 bonus tracks – "Unkutt Funk", "Smedley Smorganoff", "Lampoc Boogie", and "From The Bottom Of My Soul". CD

The cover might be a bit gimmicky – with a giant image of a hot dog – but the album's actually one of the more sensitive outings from keyboardist Bob James at the time – a really refreshing blend of modes and styles, served up on Fender Rhodes, Oberheim, and acoustic piano! There's some fairly large arrangements in the mix, but they're never that overdone – and instead often leave plenty of room for the leader to solo out front – a bit like the way that larger charts worked for Hubert Laws during his time at CTI. Bob produced and arranged – and the record's still got some funkier moments in the mix as well. Soulful 80s work from Bob James – a record that features him working a bit with Rod Temperton of Heatwave, in a style that's got a few more soul-based modes than before! Temperton wrote half of the tracks on the record – the tighter, catchier ones that often use a bit of backing vocals alongside Bob's keyboards – in a style that nicely breaks the mold a bit from the CTI years, and helps slide his smoother jazz groove into crossover R&B territory. And while you might wince at such a thought, James is actually better suited than most to do this sort of thing – as his sense of presence on the keys is still quite strong, and his traditional feeling for space still keeps the tunes nicely lean overall. Sweet electric keys from the great Bob James – a record that's a bit smoother than some of his first few classics for CTI, but still plenty darn nice! The set's got Bob working with a range of key fusion and studio players who include Steve Gadd, Earl Klugh, Eric Gale, Hubert Laws, Mongo Santamaria, and Idris Muhammad – all coming together into the compressed 70s Bob James approach to funky jazz – a sound that's possibly best summed up in the album's extended take on "Angela" (also known as "Theme To Taxi"), done here with a slightly funky undercurrent that's totally great. Other tracks are a bit brighter and warmer – but still wonderfully soulful – and James has a way of hitting the keys on the Fender Rhodes that makes them "plunk" with this sweet sweet tone that's unlike anybody else on the instrument!
