VariousHong Kong Score ... LP
Wan Chai (Hong Kong), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
Very cool grooves from the world of Hong Kong cinema – not just familiar styles from kung fu movies, but a nice range of different modes too! The music is often funky, but not always – and some tracks have vocals, while others are completely instrumental – brought forth here in a mix of sounds that's really wonderful overall, with a very strong 70s vibe on most numbers! The notes are a bit obscure – so it's not entirely easy to tell when and where all the songs are from – but given that most collections of this nature in the past have been completely in Chinese or Japanese, we're happy to take what we can. Titles include "Where Is My Love" by Lena Lim, "Sister Rainbow" by Li Tai Hsiang, "Violin" by Teresa Teng, "Memories" by The Apollo, "Johnny Guitar" by Soul Dance Music, "Huaye League" by New Wave Orchestra, "Lonely Heart" by Chang Siao Ying, and "Warm" by Yuan Ye San Chong Chang. ✨✧ BeatlesPlease Please Me ... CD
Apple, 1963. Used ... $4.99
An overstuffed album of early greatness – served up with a classic image of the Fab Four on the cover! The tunes are a mix of Lennon/McCartney originals and American soul and rock numbers that are reinterpreted wonderfully by the group – in ways that perfectly show why, unlike most of their contemporaries, The Beatles weren't just trying for slavish imitation of American authenticity – and instead were already taking off with new ideas inspired by the music! Titles include "Please Please Me", "Love Me Do", "Misery", "Anna", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Boys", "Baby IT's You", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Twist & Shout", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Chains". ✨✧ Michael FranksSleeping Gypsy ... CD
Warner, 1977. Used ... $5.99
A really brilliant little record – one of those gems that you've probably passed by so many times because it's ubiquitous, but which never fails to please over the years! Forget any pre-conceived notions you might have about Michael Franks, because at this early point in his career the man is a genre unto himself – working in a unique blend of jazz, pop, and a bit of soul – always served up sparely and with a great deal of understatement, but still filled with plenty of personal spirit on the lyrics. Franks' voice is beautifully compressed into the rest of the instrumentation by Tommy LiPuma – in a style that still holds up wonderfully over the years, and which is set to Claus Ogerman arrangements that make plenty great use of keyboards from Joe Sample of The Crusaders! Tunes are all originals by Franks – and there's some especially great Brazilian touches on the numbers "Antonio's Song" and "Down In Brazil". Other titles include "The Lady Wants To Know", "I Really Hope It's You", "Chain Reaction", and "In The Eye Of The Storm". CD

Future & OthersSuperfly ... LP
Epic, 2018. Sealed 2LP ... $14.99
A strong soundtrack album put together by Future! Of course Future doesn't set out to replicate the sound and style of the classic early 70s soundtrack to the original film by Curtis Mayfield, so we can honestly say there's really no reason to cry sacrilege here. It's mostly done in Future's & co.'s signature contemporary style, but with some moody, cinematic touches – after kicking off with with Mayfield homage by Sleepy Brown that's nice and appropriate as opposed to obvious and perfunctory – and other guests include Young Thug, Lil Wayne, 21 Savage, PartyNextDoor and more. Includes "If You Want It" by Sleepy Brown, The Future tracks "Walk On Minks", "Stains", "Nowhere", "What's Up With That" with 21 Savage, "No Shame" with PartyNextDoor, "Tie My Shoes", "Drive Itself" with Lil Wayne, "Snow My Chain Some Love" with Young Thug, "RAN" by Miguel and more. 13 tracks in all. Stonewall JacksonThat's Why I'm Walkin – Singles A's & B's 1957 to 1962 ... CD
Columbia/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
Stonewall Jackson may not be one of the best-remembered singers of his generation, but during the time covered in this set he really delivered a fantastic string of singles for Columbia Records – the kind of classic country gems that are often equally great on both sides of the record! Jackson's got this raw twang on his vocals on most of these tracks – a warbling charm that's somewhere in the Lefty Frizell side of the spectrum – and even as he moves into some folksier material during the second stretch of this set, his vocal charms hold things very strong – especially as he moves back to straighter country towards the end. 32 tracks in all – with titles that include "Hungry For Love", "Leona", "That's Why I'm Walkin", "Waterloo", "Don't Be Angry", "A Broken Heart A Wedding Band", "I Need You Real Bad", "A Wound Time Can't Erase", "Can't Hang Up The Phone", "Slowly", "Thirty Links Of Chain", "Run", "Grieving In My Heart", and "Gettin Older". Sire, 1979. New Copy 4CD & 2LP ... $71.99 79.98
Prime live material from the Ramones – recorded on the final night of 1977, right when the group was at the height of their power! If you ever got a chance to see The Ramones back in the day, the sound was really amazing – every bit as short, sharp, and focused as the studio records – but even more so, as the group would work through their set list with razor-sharp intensity, almost this juggernaut of punk rock sound that never lets up from start to finish! That quality is definitely in place here, as the whole thing tears through an incredible set list that includes "California Sun", "Rockaway Beach", "Teenage Lobotomy", "I Wanna Be A Good Boy", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker", "Suzy Is A Headbanger", "I Don't Care", "Havana Affair", "We're A Happy Family", "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", "Let's Dance", "Chainsaw", "Do You Wanna Dance", "You're Gonna Kill That Girl", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", "Glad To See You Go", and "Blitzkrieg Bop". Amazing anniversary package – with the full album, remastered – presented as both CD1, and 2LPs in the 12" book-style package – along with very long, never-issued concert material from the same stretch in 1977! CD2, CD3, and CD4 each feature shows recorded in England on the three days before the main set recorded for the album – each 27 tracks in length. Also features new liner notes from Steve Albini and Ed Stasium – and packaged in a very very cool book-style hardcover. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousMen In The Glass Booth – Groundbreaking Re-edits & Remixes By The Disco Era's Most Influential DJs (3CD set) ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. ✨✧ Jackson 5Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic first record from the Jackson 5 – and very much the stuff of legend all the way through! The tracks feature a number of tunes sung previously by other artists – but the quintet are already at a level that really transforms the material – not just through their unified sense of soulful harmonies, but especially from the breakout leads – which have a fresh, vibrant style that's really unlike any soul group that ever came before – especially when the young Michael steps forth, and shows us he's one hell of a charmer! Production is from Bobby Taylor and The Corporation – and the former definitely brings in some of the deeper, headier tones you'd hear in his music – one more aspect that really keeps the record from being just a kiddie soul novelty – and which instead makes it a truly lasting Motown gem! Titles include the always-wonderful "I Want You Back", one of those tunes that we've heard a million times, but still love to death – plus the tracks "Nobody", "Chained", "Born To Love You", "Stand", "My Cherie Amour", and "Standing In The Shadows of Love". Hell, even their version of "Zip A Dee Doo Dah" is pretty darn great! CD

✨✧ Sid King & The Five StringsGonna Shake This Shake Tonight ... CD
Columbia/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer collection of rare mid 50s Columbia Records singles by Sid King – a key figure in helping hillbilly music transition to rock and roll! Sid is probably more country than some of his rocking contemporaries, and the work here actually seems to be perfectly balanced between the two modes – maybe in part because the group hails from Texas, and in part because much of the production is handled by Don Law – the Columbia country powerhouse, and a studio talent who's got an especially strong ear for making the guitar ring out in the mix! There's a great sense of growth going on over the space of the years in these tunes – definitely hillbilly in the early 50s cuts, but hard rockabilly genius on the later ones too. CD features 29 tracks in all – including "Put Something In The Pot Boy", "Crazy Little Heart", "I Like It", "Warmed Over Kisses Left Over Love", "Booger Red", "Mama I Want You", "But I Don't Care", "Purr Kitty Purr", "Good Rockin Baby", "Ooby Dooby", "Who Put The Turtle In Myrtle's Girdle", and "Hello There Rockin Chair". Johnny BurnetteRock N Roll Trio/Tear It Up ... CD
Coral/BGO (UK), 1956/1957. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A pair of full length albums from Johnny Burnette – one of the greatest talents in the early years of rock and roll! First up is the seminal Rock & Roll Trio album on Coral from 1956 – a stunning little record and one that's had an undeniable influence on the sound of guitar-based music for generations to come – from rockabilly to garage, psych, and punk – thanks to groundbreaking work from the Johnny Burnette Trio! The album's one of the first really raw records to be cut as a full length rock release – not a handful of previous singles mixed with filler, but a nonstop jammer that has the core trio occasionally augmented by larger horns, but never losing the energy of their sound – or that incredible bite on guitar. The use of fuzz here is landmark – especially on the classic "Train Kept A Rollin" – the group's remake of a Tiny Bradshaw tune, refocused in energy that would later be picked up by The Yardbirds. But the whole thing's great, too – and other titles include "Sweet Love On My Mind", "Lonesome Train", "Honey Hush", "I Just Found Out", "Chains Of Love", "I Love You So", and "Rock Billy Boogie". Tear It Up was a later 90s album that pulled together more obscure moments from the trio – but the quality of the work is rock-solid throughout – as Johnny and Dorsey Burnette play with raw intensity and razor-sharp musicianship. Titles include "Shattered Dreams", "My Love You're A Stranger", "Oh Baby Babe", "Tear It Up", "You're Undecided", "Midnight Train", and "If You Want It Enough". CD

The final entry in the Good Morning Vietnam trilogy from veteran underground rhymer/writer MF Grimm and producer Drasar Monumental – perhaps the rawest and hardest hitting of the three! The smart, dexterous rhymes are laced with wartime imagery and backed by thematic samples throughout, always walking the fineline between hypnotic heaviness and sensory overload. It's a delicate balance – and they make it work strongly once again on this closing entry in the series –always with enough jazzy funk and cracking soul in the beats to keep your heads nodding, even in the heaviest moments. Heavy funk and soaring soul from the Mainstream Records family of the mid 70s – a rare batch of tracks that were only ever issued as singles by the label, and by the smaller Brown Dog and IX Chains imprints! Most of the cuts here are right from the middle of the 70s – and are a mix of small combo grooving and some fuller, Philly-styled backings – all in support of a range of great singers who often bring some deeper soul vocals into the mix. Most of the cuts here have never been reissued before, and the package is a whopping 17 track look at this under-acknowledged side of the Mainstream Records story – with rare tracks that include "Let The People Talk" by Steptones, "Seven Day Lover" by Raymond Smith, "Be Here In The Morning" by 2nd Verse, "I'm Gonna Get You" by Frankie Floyd, "Let The Music Play" by JG Lewis, "Gonna Have A Good Time" by Crystal Image, "You Are The Spice Of My Life" by Nia Johnson, "Wind Up Toy" by Zebra, "These Memories" by Almeta Lattimore, "Super Guy Flying High" by The Last Crusade, "Get Down Get Down" by South Side Coalition, "You've Got A Lot To Give" by Chocolate Syrup, "You're A Friend Of Mine" by Words Of Wisdom, and "If You Wanna Party" by Spectrum. A great collection of grooves both old and new – pulled from a decades-old tradition of soul music, with a vibe that really lives up to the piles of dusty old records on the cover! The set begins with rare 70s soul, then moves up to the present – and all along the way, there's a focus on well-crafted tracks that really stand out from the mainstream – definitely a few cuts by bigger artists, but not their hits at all – mixed with some great gems from up-and-comers, in a way that makes the whole thing a fantastic discovery in soul! The collection's got a total of 30 tracks in all – all handled by Tony Monson, who gave us the excellent Ethereal Magic collections – with titles that include "Body" by Foreign Exchange, "Don't Let Me Down" by Vesta Williams, "Roster" by Jahiem, "Breaking It Down (downtown orig mix)" by Petalpusher, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "Rio De Janeiro" by Ugly Duckling, "Don't Be Lonely" by Cameo, "Running Stop Lights" by Mel Waiters, "Don't Wanna Wait" by Lew Kirton, "Twenty Four Seven (Yoruba mix)" by 1968 Featuring Rasheed Ali, "Rescue You" by Ryan Leslie, "Something Inside My Head" by Gene Dunlap, "Afro Jump (nick mix)" by Solodinjgo, "Hangin On" by The Affair, "New York City Blues" by Mark Winkler, "Happier" by Lisa Grand, "Saved By Love" by David Lasley, and "Music & Wine (funkaphonic voc mix)" by Blue Six. Invictus/Demon (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99
Massive soul from the start of the 70s – some of the heaviest cuts ever put together by the Holland Dozier Holland team – all issued on their own family of labels after the trio split with Motown! The work here is way deeper than their Motown sides – maybe more in the territory of Norman Whitfield, Westbound Records, and some of the other great work coming out in that second wave of soul from Detroit – more progressive and more righteous overall, often with more emphasis on the bottom groove too! As you'd guess from the cover, the tunes all appeared on the HDH labels Invictus, Hot Wax, and Music Merchant – and titles include "Cheeba" by The 8th Day, "New Breed Kinda Woman" by Lamont Dozier, "Love Factory" by Eloise Laws, "Sliced Tomatoes" by The Just Brothers, "Crumbs Off The Table" by Laura Lee, "Working On A Building Of Love" by Chairmen Of The Board, "Unhooked Generation" by Freda Payne, "Sunday Morning People" by Harrison Kennedy, "Don't Leave Me (inst)" by Lamont Dozier, "Breakdown" by Parliament, "I Shall Not Be Moved" by Barrino Brothers, "Sittin On A Time Bomb" by Lee Charles, "The World We Live In" by The Politicians, "I'm Bugging Your Phone (part 1)" by Smith Connection, "I Got It (part 1)" by New York Port Authority, and "Want Ads" by Honey Cone. Totally great! 28 tracks in all: "Tear It Up", "You're Undecided", "Train Kept A-Rollin'" (one of coolest, scariest rockabilly songs ever recorded, if you care what we think), "Chains Of Love", "Honey Hush", "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee", "My Love, Your A Stranger", "I Love You So", "Sweet Love On My Mind", "Touch Me", "Eagle Beaver Baby", "Butterfingers", "If You Want It Enough" and more!
