✨✧ Velvet UndergroundVelvet Underground & Nico (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Verve, Late 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". ✨✧ Velvet UndergroundVU - A Collection Of Previously Unreleased Recordings ... LP
Verve, 1968/1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A slice of Velvet Underground that's almost as essential as the group's first few albums for Verve – material recorded during those years, but never issued at the time – finally put together in a legitimate package in the mid 80s, after years of circulating around as bootlegs! The songwriting here is really great – a strong extension of the group's work on White Light White Heat and their third, self-titled album – especially the latter, because there's some nicely sweet and spacey moments. Titles include "Stephanie Says", "Ocean", "I Can't Stand It", "Foggy Notion", "I'm Sticking With You", "Temptation Inside Your Heart", "Lisa Says", "One Of These Days", "Andy's Chest", and "She's My Best Friend". Velvet UndergroundWhite Light/White Heat ... LP
Verve, 1968. Very Good ... $99.99
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing, in the skull cover with "There She Comes Now" and "lead guitar" for Lou Reed on back. Cover has some light ringwear, a bit of seam splitting on the bottom, and a name on the back upper corner.)

Rare material from The Velvet Underground – early 1966 recordings by the group, done at Scepter Studios, and with a very different feel than the material you'll know from their first album! The release is a great treasure – an early look at this group in formation, and already more powerful than sounds from almost all their contemporaries – and certainly most of the folks recording at Scepter! Titles include early versions of "Heroin", "Femme Fatale", "Run Run Run", "Waiting For The Man", "I'll Be Your Mirror", "Black Angel's Death Song", and "European Son". LP, Vinyl record album

Beau BrummelsTriangle/Bradley's Barn ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1967/1968. New Copy ... On July 31, 2020
Genius work from The Beau Brummels – two albums that no fan of underground 60s rock should be without! First up is Triangle – a tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! At some level, the group's a folk-rock outfit – with the left-of-center feel of some of Fred Neil's best work for Capitol, and a similar blend of east coast honesty and west coast mind expansion. The format here is remarkably simple, but handled with some nice touches by producer Lenny Waronker, who really brings a lot more out of the band than on their earlier indie recordings. Titles include "Are You Happy", "The Wolf Of Velvet Fortune", "The Keeper Of Time", "Only Dreaming Now", "Magic Hollow", "Painter Of Women", and "Triangle". Bradley's Barn is a crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! Tremendous stuff – and titles include "Jessica", "Bless You California", "I'm A Sleeper", "Little Bird", "Turn Around", and "An Added Attraction". CD

BedheadWhatFunLifeWas ... LP
Trance, 1994. Very Good+ ... $43.99
The first album from Bedhead – a 1994 record that helped usher in something of a quiet revolution in 90s indie rock – paving the way for lusher, moodier and slower soundscapes, soon be dubbed slowcore! Bedhead is as much a breath of fresh air a couple decades later, delivering a timeless, moody sound that takes some cues from the vibe of the Velvet Underground at their mellowest, and more recent trailblazers like Spaceman 3 – but ultimately deliver their own distinctive, and now oft-imitated sound. Includes "Liferaft", "Haywire", "Bedside Table", "The Unpredictable", "Landlord", "Crushing", "Unfinished", "Powder", "Foaming Love", "To The Ground", "Living Well" and "Wind Down". ✨✧ John CaleHelen Of Troy (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Island/Culture Factory (France), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of John Cale's greatest moments as a solo artist – a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Titles include "Cable Hogue", "Engine", "Save Us", "My Maria", "I Keep A Close Watch", "Helen Of Troy", and "Sudden Death" – plus a cover of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso". CD

Eternal Womb DeliriumEternal Womb Delirium #1 ... CD
Super Fuji Discs (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
A pretty wild set of experimental work from mid 70s Japan – as you might guess from the name of the group! The lineup actually features a young Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano, but his work on that instrument is often overshadowed by the electronics and keyboards, and heavy guitar at some points – soaring out out with plenty of fierce fuzz and distortion when needed! Yet there's also a lot more going on here than just guitar and keyboards – as the tracks are all quite long, and go through lots of offbeat trippy changes that might be right at home with the Velvet Underground generation – not in a similar sound, but definitely in a similar spirit. All three long tracks are in Japanese – and the album's definitely a wild blend of psych, electronics, and other experimental modes. CD

✨✧ Human SwitchboardWho's Landing In My Hangar? (with bonus download) ... LP
Faulty/Fat Possum, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The only full album from Human Switchboard – one of the leading lights of the Cleveland scene during that city's heady late 70s years – and a group whose mix of quirk and tunefulness would have made them huge, had they been working on the coasts! There's a great sound going on here – the tightness of the power pop generation, which you might guess from the trio lineup – mixed with some of the weirder strains that were coming out of the Midwest underground – sometimes coming through in the Farfisa organ work of Myrna Marcarian, sometimes in the Feelies-like guitar jams of Robert Pfeifer, which are only urged on more by the complex mix of drums and percussion by Ron Metz! Song structures really open up, too – the record revels in the unexpected – and although some folks might make comparisons between the group and The Velvet Underground, they're much more their own sort of thing – with the individuality and earnestness of the early CBGB scene at its best. Titles include "Refrigerator Door", "In This Town", "Who's Landing In My Hangar", "Say No To Saturday's Girl", "Don't Follow Me Home", "Book On Looks", "Where The Light Breaks", and "I Can Walk Alone". ✨✧ NicoChelsea Girl (smoke swirl vinyl pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records of the 60s – and a sublime debut from Nico, sounding fresher and less dreary here than on many of her later sides – although still pretty chilling overall! The record features larger orchestral backings on most tracks – never too heavy, but with light strings that really help Nico depart from the sound of her work with The Velvet Underground. This style adds a new level of sophistication to her vocals, and really helps in her interpretation of the unusual material culled for the set – tunes that include a few key numbers by old partners in The Velvets, as well as some especially great tracks by a young Jackson Browne – a romantic interest of Nico at the time! The whole thing's incredible – on a par with the best from Scott Walker during the same stretch, although very different overall – and a key entry in the darker side of the non-hippie end of the 60s spectrum. Titles include "These Days", "It Was A Pleasure Then", "Eulogy To Lenny Bruce", and the incredible title cut, "Chelsea Girls". Fantastic! LP, Vinyl record album

Universal (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. ✨✧ Mick RonsonOnly After Dark – The Complete Mainman Recordings (Slaughter On 10th Avenue/Play Don't Worry/1976 sessions/rarities) (4CD set) ... CD
RCA/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Ziggy Stardust guitar genius Mick Ronson issued a pair of 70s albums on the David Bowie Mainman imprint for RCA – and both of those records are included here, plus a huge amount of never-issued tracks and bonus material too! First up is Slaughter On 10th Avenue – Mick Ronson's first and probably best solo album – an adventurous set of glam pop that's both weird and catchy, naturally featuring some fantastic guitar pyrotechnics. Fascinatingly, Ronson starts the record with a crooning cover of "Love Me Tender", with his recognizable riffs kicking in a bit after his plaintive vocals – but it's that kind of anything goes weirdness that makes the album loads of fun, kind of closer to Queen style pomp than Bowie's astral trailblazing. Titles include "Growing Up & I'm Fine", "Music Is Lethal", I'm The One" and the Richard Rodgers penned title tune. Next is Play Don't Worry – catchy glam pop from guitarist Mick Ronson – the blazing player best remembered for his work with Bowie, here blending punchy riffs and heavier sounds with bubbly hooks and playful production touches. Our favorite tunes showcase the heavy guitar fuzz, but the oddball cutesy songs are endearing in their strange way. Ronson kind of throws a bunch of stuff at the wall here, and the stuff that sticks gets you nodding your head and smiling at the more innocuous touches. Titles include "Billy Porter", "This Is For You", a weird, piano peppered cover of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat", "Empty Bed", "This Is For You", "Woman" and more. Both albums come with bonus tracks that include live tracks and rare demos, plus some outtakes and an interview too. CD3 features rare 1976 sessions – with titles that include "Hard Life", "Takin A Train", "I'd Give Anything To See You", "Hard Headed Woman", "Roll Like The River", "Angel No 9", and "Junkie For Your Love". CD4 features more rarities – tracks that include demo and live takes of material on CD3 – the live material of which was recorded in Buffalo in 1976. 60 tracks in all – and a nice booklet of notes! ✨✧ VariousCapital Revolution – Le Canzoni Che Hanno Cambiato Il Mondo ... CD
Universal (Italy), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Yet here, the time is 1968, the place the Italian scene – illustrated in a set of 42 tracks by artists who include Equipe 84, Caterina Caselli, Gianno Morandi, The Byrds, Beach Boys, I Dik Dik, I Nomadi, The Who, Lucia Dall, Temptations, The Band, The Rokes, Lugi Tengo, I Camaleonti, Buffalo Springfield, Velvet Underground, Otis Redding, Francoise Hardi, Giorgio Gaber, Fabrizio De Andre, Canned Heat, New Trolls, The Monkees, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mina. Even includes "I Sole E Di Tutti" by Stevie Wonder – an Italian version of "A Place In The Sun"! CD

VariousHallelujah – The Songs Of Leonard Cohen ... CD
Ace (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
A wonderful tribute to the songwriting genius of Leonard Cohen – one that begins with some of his key contemporaries taking on his important songs – then stretches out over the space of decades, to show just how important Cohen's material has been to more contemporary performers! In fact, given that Leonard never really cracked the charts during his early run for Columbia Records, he's actually maybe been one of those artists who are more "musicians' musicians", or "singers' singers" – because his talents have been a huge inspiration to so many other creators – a bit like the statement once made about the Velvet Underground, that they never sold many records – but every one of those records seemed to find a place in the hands of people who were then inspired by them. The package features the usual great Ace Records attention to detail, which includes copious notes on the material, and lots of the history behind the songs – for titles that include "Tower Of Song" by Marianne Faithfull, "Sisters Of Mercy" by Dion, "Lover Lover Lover" by David Blue, "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" by Judy Collins, "Everybody Knows" by Barb Jungr, "Heart With No Companion" by Ron Sexsmith, "True Love Leaves No Traces" by Tom Northcott, "First We Take Manhattan" by Joe Cocker, "Avalanche" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, "Chelsea Hotel No 2" by Rufus Wainwright, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Marissa Nadler, "Suzanne" by Nina Simone, "Come Spend The Morning" by Lee Hazlewood, and "God Is Alive Magic Is Afoot" by Buffy Sainte Marie. Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 22.99
Writer Jon Savage has given us some great dips into key years of the 60s – thanks to a wonderful series on Ace Records, which offered up a special mix of styles on every disc – but this time around, he focuses on a few years at the start of the 70s – and serves up an all-rock collection with a really heavy sound! Savage is never one to point out the ordinary – and the set does a really great job of exposing all these special shifts in the music at the time – sounds that never would have emerged just a few years before, and which have gone from having more open ties to their influences, to special territory that really shows both UK and American scenes making some great inventions of their own. As before, the notes are superb – and titles include "Broad Daylight" by Free, "Peace Loving Man" by Blossom Toes, "The War Machine" by Leviathan, "Magic Potion" by The Open Mind, "Rock & Roll Queen" by Mott The Hoople, "Devil Came From Kansas" by Procol Harum, "King Kong" by The Kinks, "Bad Night At The Whiskey" by The Byrds, "Comin Home" by Delaney & Bonnie, "Flying" by Faces, "Funk #48" by James Gang, "1969" by The Stooges, "Lie To Me" by Kaleidoscope, "Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Marsha Hunt, "Plynth" by Jeff Beck Group, "American Ruse" by MC5, "Sweet Jane" by Velvet Underground, "Rock & Roll" by Detroit, "Travelin In The Dark" by Mountain, "Yesterday's Numbers" by Flamin Groovies, and "Natural Magic" by Jack Nitzsche. HoZac, 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Noirish French rock from The Liminanas – the second great record in a row from multi-instrumentalist Lionel and sultry singer/drummer Marie! Crystal Anis is their first album for Hozac – and one that equals, if not tops their underground instant classic debut for Trouble In Mind. Honestly, no other neo-classic garage psych revivalists anywhere in the world hits our sweet spot like The Liminanas. They carry a darkness-tinged, fuzzy guitar vibe inspired by early Velvets, the sometimes spoken, sometimes sung sexiness of Serge Gainsbourg and his chanteuses on the vocal tip, and an overall narcotic vibe that sinks in and doesn't let up. Yes, the influences are familiar, but what they do with them is uniquely hypnotic and wholly distinctive. The songs jump back and forth from French to English, but it's really all about the mood here. We can't recommend 'em highly enough! Titles Include "Salvation", "Longanisse", "AF3458", "Kinam", "Hospital Boogie", "Bad Lady Goes To Jail", "Crystal Anis", "Belmondo", "Betty And Johnny", "Une Ballade Pour Clive" and the closing instrumental "I'm Dead".
