✨✧ Tower Of PowerBack To Oakland ... CD
Warner, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tower Of Power are back in Oakland, after recording their previous album down south – cooking up plenty of East Bay grease with their horn-heavy groove at the height of its power! These guys were always a cut above any other band who tried for this territory – and this early version of the ensemble still features tremendous keyboard work from the mighty Chester Thompson on organ and Fender Rhodes – plus later soul legend Lenny Williams on lead vocals. The rest of the group are all in great young form too – Emilio Castillo, Steve Kupka, Greg Adams, Lenny Pickett, and the rest – and titles include "Oakland Stroke", "I Got The Chop", "Time Will Tell", "Squib Cakes", and "Man From the Past". Tower Of PowerYou Ought To Be Havin Fun – The Columbia/Epic Anthology ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Mid 90s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 24.99
Two slices of work from Tower Of Power – both recorded for Sony/CBS, but with over a decade between them! First up, the set presents 19 killer cuts from the Columbia Records years of Tower Of Power – a time when the group moved away from Warner Brothers, where they were maybe losing a little steam – and forged this fantastic sense of soul that was missing from some of their earlier records! At the start, TOP were a rock-solid funk act – but here, they also bring a stronger soul approach to their vocals and songwriting – in a way that mixes their always-sharp instrumentation with a deeper, more developed vibe – super-strong material that sometimes doesn't always get its due. The set brings together Columbia tracks from albums, singles, and even some b-sides – with tracks that include "You Ought To Be Havin Fun", "Am I A Fool", "Lovin You Is Gonna See Me Thru", "Ain't Nothin Stoppin Us Now", "Because I Think The World Of You", "We Came To Play", "Love Bug", "While We Went To The Moon", "Somewhere Down The Road", "Deal With It", "By Your Side", and "Heaven Must Have Made You". The second half of the package features tunes the group recorded for Epic Records during the mid 90s – material that was only issued on CD at the time, and which shows TOP to continue the strengths of their earlier years! Some of the cuts go for a retro funk approach, others have a more contemporary soul vibe – and the set features 16 Epic tracks that include "A Little Knowledge", "Recapture The Magic", "Soul With A Capital S", "Please Come Back To Stay", "You", "Rhythm & Business", "Come To A Decision", "Undercurrent", "Diggin On James Brown", and "How Could This Happen To Me". SantanaSantana III ... CD
Columbia, 1971. Used ... $4.99
One of the most searing, soaring albums ever from Santana – a set that takes all the power of the previous two records, and packs it into one tight little set! There's plenty of Latin influences going on – mixed with heavy fuzz from Carlos, and lots of jazz and funky touches too – way more happening on the rhythm tip than most of Santana's contemporaries – which is why the record continues to find such a wonderfully wide audience over the years. Drop cuts like "Batuka","Toussaint L'Overture", "Jungle Strut", or "Para Los Rumberos" next to tracks by War, Mandrill or Tower Of Power and you'll see what we mean – and titles also include "No One To Depend On","Taboo", "Guajira" and "Everything's Coming Our Way". Chester ThompsonPowerhouse ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse". Legacy/MCA/Experience Hendrix, Late 60s. Used ... $4.99
Hard blues and soul loving material from Hendrix – the excellent South Saturn Delta compilation of rarities, alternate mixes and other bits from throughout Jimi's too short life and career! It's killer stuff that stands up today as well as any posthumous Hendrix release, really pulling together the breadth of stylistic range over the years. Includes "Look Over Yonder", "Here He Comes (Lover Man)", "South Saturn Delta", "Tax Free", "Midnight", "Drifter's Escape", "Midnight Lightning", "All Along The Watchtower", "Power Of Soul" and more. Stan KentonContemporary Concepts (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1955. Used ... $7.99
Contemporary concepts that are as bold today as they were when first released in the mid 50s! Stan's at the height of his powers here – working with the brilliant Bill Holman to craft some incredible versions of tunes that had become jazz standards, tired ones at that – but which explode into new colors and tones in the hands of the Kenton magic! Titles include sublime readings of "What's New", "Stella By Starlight", "Yesterdays", "Cherokee", and "I've Got You Under My Skin" – and the CD features bonus material that includes "Opus In Chartreuse", "Opus In Turquoise", "Opus In Beige", and "Sunset Tower" – most of which were arranged by Gene Roland, and are even more modern than some of the other material.
