ApostlesBlack Is Beautiful (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Tidal Waves, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
A tight little set from one of the grooviest groups on the Nigerian scene of the 70s – a combo who could play with a familiar mix of fuzz and funk, but also throw in some deeper soul touches on the vocals – in a way that makes the whole album a much richer set than work by some of their contemporaries! Some of the songs are heavy on message – both personal and political – and the rhythms have these complicated basslines that really keep things interesting, and which keep The Apostles from sounding too much like anyone else – almost a cross-cultural take on West African rhythms, on titles that include "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry", "Black Is Beautiful", "Don't Huzzle For Love", "Enyim", "Please Yourself", "Ndi Nkwa", and "Today Is The Tomorrow". AricaHeaven (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Just Sunshine/Tidal Waves, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99
An early musical moment from the Arica Institute – a spiritual collective whose many members supposedly recorded this album over the course of a night spent at the Electric Lady studio – with such a shifting lineup of sounds and participants, the album doesn't list any particular musicians at all! The work is on the farther side of cosmic jazz – almost hearkening towards more meditative modes at times – such as the later recordings of Laraaji – but with elements that are also borrowed from Indian music and other global sources, often presented and produced in a way that the sonic elements bubble into a heady aural space that's difficult to navigate without letting yourself go entirely. Titles include "Lake", "Wind", "Ocean", "Thorn", "River", "Candle", and "Utoh". LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Derrick Total ExperienceYou Betcha! – Live At Fiddlers ... LP
PS Records/Tidal Waves, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A pretty hip batch of soul jazz tracks – recorded by drummer Frank Derrick live at Fiddler's nightclub in Chicago. Derrick's group plays a bit of everything – from Eddie Harris funky jazz to driving big band numbers to organ-heavy soul jazz numbers – all with a nicely heavy bottom that really gives the tracks an edge! The recording quality is nicely rumbly at times – almost giving the record the feel of some of those great local school band records from the same period – but the album's even better than those, because the tunes here are all original numbers – with a great overall conception that's a lot fresher than the usual album of this sort! Titles include "No Jive", "Jazz Scene", "Variations In Jazz", "Inspiration", and "Socialite Suburbanite". LP, Vinyl record album

Norman FeelsNorman Feels (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Just Sunshine/Tidal Waves, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
Mellow soul, sweeping strings, and sweet electric keys – a stone 70s classic from Norman Feels – one of the greatest soul singers you've never heard before! The album's Norman's first (of two), and is a vastly under-recognized gem – the kind of record that easily stands next to some of the best male sweet soul of the time – and which is awash in some of the best studio touches coming from the Philly or New Jersey scenes of the time. Norman's got a totally righteous voice – one that crackles with Marvin Gaye-like personality, yet which also glides along with the subtler soul of Ronnie McNeir – and he's arranged to perfection here by David Van De Pitte, who slides just the right amount of funk into the bottom of the grooves on the set. Titles include "Everything Is Going Our Way", "Something In Me", "They Said It Couldn't Be Done", "Something About Yo", "Don't", "Yes You Did" and "Today". LP, Vinyl record album

Antonio L NewtonNovaphonia ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1987. New Copy ... $23.99 26.99
A soul record, but one with a fair bit of "something else" going on as well – and a set that was originally only issued on cassette, which might be why it was missed the first time around! Antonio L Newton, aka Tony Newton, has a long legacy in soul music – including work with Motown groups, especially the Miracles – yet by the time of this record, he clearly is off into territory that's all his own – using new technologies of the 80s to work in the studio all by himself, and serving up a set of keyboard-heavy tracks that really have a nice sense of variety! Some tunes have a very upbeat vibe – almost 80s sound library or soundtrack action material – while others are more mellow and meditative – soundscapes carved out of work on Roland, Yamaha, and Wersi keyboards. Titles include "Lento", "Odyssey", "Star Romance", "Novatron 2", "Breakthrough", and "Astro". LP, Vinyl record album

Purple ImagePurple Image ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
A key album in the post-Hendrix tradition of funky black rock – and the only album ever recorded by Cleveland's Purple Image! The approach here follows nicely in the same territory worked by Funkadelic and Fugi in the early days – a heady, fuzzed-up blend of trippy guitars, heavy rhythms, and some nice sweeter soul touches – all in a mode that swings nicely between really messed-up tunes, and others with a lighter, more soul-based approach. Side two of the record is dominated by the great jamming track "Marching to a Different Drummer" – easily enough to rival anything on Funkadelic's Free Your Mind album – and other cuts include "Living In the Ghetto", "Why", "Lady", and "We Got To Pull Together". StreetlifeNite Songs (180 gram pressing) ... LP
DC Records/Tidal Waves, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 30.98
A rare funky gem from this obscure Florida group – a combo with roots in the more-famous Winstons – that legendary group who gave the world "Amen Brother" at the end of the 60s! The work here is equally funky, but in a different sort of way – tight 70s ensemble funk, with instrumentation that's sharp enough to have some nice jazzy currents – and a completely on the money approach that blends nice horn work with some strongly-grooving rhythms! Vocals shift around nicely from track to track – and there's a lot of jazzy work throughout – on titles that include "What Am I Gonna Do", "Everlasting Love", "Head Over Heels", "Livin Lovin Lady", "I Need A Woman", "Interlude", and "Night Songs". Bubbha ThomasLife & Times ... LP
Lightnin/Tidal Waves, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
An obscure later set from Texas legend Bubbha Thomas – a drummer you'll know from his work with the legendary Lightmen group in the 70s – working here in an 80s-styled extrapolation of some of the ideas from that previous combo! The music is much leaner than before – heavy on basslines, beats, and keyboards – and Bubbha does a great job of sliding into electro-styled funk and soul modes, while still holding on to some of his own sound too. The record's maybe more New York than you'd expect from something recorded in Houston – and titles include "Livin On Love", "Skipp Hopp", "Life & Times (Of Daddy Jive)", and "Let Me Play The Music". Marcos Valle & AzymuthBrazil By Music – Fly Cruzeiro (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cruzeiro/Tidal Waves, Mid 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99
A really unique little album – one that features sounds created in collaboration between Marcos Valle and Azymuth – all done as a specialty album for an airline in Brazil! The sound is breezy and dreamy – different than some of Azymuth's earliest music, but not that far off – and inflected with the warmer touches that Valle used on his records as the 70s moved in – that almost-soundtrack style of sophistication, but still lean enough to groove! The music is rich in keyboards from Jose Roberto Bertrami – and the whole thing's got a breezy vibe that would have been perfect kicking back in a leather seat in first class, looking down at the beaches of Rio below! Titles include the "Jingle Cruzeiro" – plus versions of "Asa Branca", "Samba De Verao", "Nao Tem Solucao/Marina/Rosas", "Ate Pensei", "Pais Do Futebol", "Zazueira/Mas Que Nada", and "Wave". Albert WashingtonSad & Lonely (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Eastbound/Tidal Waves, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 26.99
An obscure bit of heavy soul – and the only vocal album on the jazz-based Eastbound imprint of Detroit's legendary Westbound Records! Albert's a blues artist, and sings in a soulful electric style that's similar to some of the Stax work of Albert King – but which has a bit more of a funk twist to it. Albert's vocals are definitely in the bluesy mode, but the backing is more in a Memphis soul style, with hints of Stax production styles in the mix, and lots of swirling organ underneath the vocals, in that Hi Records mode from the early 70s. Titles include "You're Messing Up My Mind", "Mischievous", "Feel The Need", "I Can't Stand It No More", "No Matter What The Cost Might Be", and "My Mother's Prayer". A pretty solid soul album all the way through – with a strong deep soul feel that's different than the usual Westbound/Eastbound bag! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Norman FeelsWhere Or When (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Just Sunshine/Tidal Waves, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius work from Norman Feels – a virtually unknown mellow soul singer from the 70s, but one who should have been huge! Norman sings with this sweetly crackling style that we loved the moment we first heard it – a sound that's somewhere in territory covered by Marvin Gaye or Leroy Hutson at the time, but which has a personality and intimacy that's Norman's own. Arrangements on the set are by David Van De Pitte – who manages to use full backings, but keep things nice and upfront – never covering over Norman's voice, and allowing the singer to dominate the set with his mellow-grooving charm! Titles include "Shame", "Movie", "You Made Me Feel Better", "Mr Wanna Be", "Where Or When", "You Can't Stop My Love", and "I'll Show You The Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Howard RobertsLord Shango – Original Soundtrack (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Bryan/Tidal Waves, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unique soundtracks of the blacksploitation generation – but maybe that's also because the film Lord Shango was also somewhat different than most – a hipper, more creative movie that took on a number of themes, which are all echoed by Howard Roberts in his music! This Howard Roberts isn't the famous LA guitar jazz musician – but instead a black arranger best known for 60s choral records that usually had a blend of easy listening and soul – which is quite a difference from the funky vibe of this record – a set that mixes in all sorts of vocal and percussive elements with more familiar electric funk – still with Roberts' chorus in the mix, but often with a lead female singer singing soul-based lyrics! The whole thing's wonderful – as much a soul record as a soundtrack – and titles include the great groover "Funky But" – plus "Streak O Lean", "Banjoko", "Come To The Water", "Walk Softly", and "Sailin". ✨✧ Nina SimoneVery Rare Evening ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A very rare evening indeed – a sweet little live set recorded by Nina Simone during her soulful height at RCA – but issued years after that time, and only briefly on a small indie label! The setting here is wonderful – a small combo in the background with the great Weldon Irvine on Hammond, playing these soulful lines that are mighty lean and plenty powerful – spurred on by rhythms from Al Shackman on guitar, Gene Perla on bass, and Don Alias on drums! The record also features two female backup singers on a few cuts – giving the album an almost Sweet Inspirations like touch at moments – but overall, the feel is straight hip Nina – that unique blend of soul, folk, and jazz that pushed things to the next level at the end of the 60s! Includes the great original "Revolution", plus the track "The Other Woman", "In The Morning", "Ain't Go No/I Got Life", "Save Me", and "To Love Somebody". LP, Vinyl record album

Late Art Blakey – but great Blakey too, as Art never faltered a minute in the later years of his life, and continued to work with some of the best younger players he could find! Here, Art's leading a lineup that includes Brian Lynch on trumpet, Frank Lacy and Steve Davis on trombone, Javon Jackson and Dale Barlow on tenor, and Geoff Keezer on piano – all coming together with a tight, round sound that takes us back to some of Blakey's sublime mid 70s recordings – a masterpiece in soulful economy! ✨✧ Exile OneExile One (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Disques Debs/Tidal Waves, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The fantastic first album from Exile One – a group who recorded more mainstream work in Paris later in their career – but who really sound fierce and funky here right at the start! The sound is lean, stripped-down, and a lot more aimed towards American soul than you'd guess from their Caribbean roots – especially on those tracks where group leader Gordon Henderson really stretches out and shows off both his deep and funky soul chops! There's a few cuts here that have more familiar Caribbean elements, but even those come across with a tighter, rawer sound than most of the group's contemporaries – which makes this debut a real 70s standout all the way through. Titles include "Funky Crookie", "Don't Bite The Hand", "Which One Is Me Home", "Miss Tomorrow", "If You Turn Your Back", and "Where's The World Gettin To". LP, Vinyl record album

Mad funky genius from Ghanian singer Pat Thomas – an artist who first rose to fame in the group of Ebo Taylor, and who's maybe even more fantastic here in the spotlight in the lead! The cover of the album maybe looks a bit more like a 60s photograph than the 70s stretch in which it was issued – and Pat's vocals often have an old school deep soul sort of approach too – sometimes mixed with jagged Afro Funk rhythms, other times in more laidback settings that allow him to flower even more as a singer! At points, there's almost some rocksteady organ work in the mix – which just adds to the charm of the record – on titles that include "I Need You Around", "Fishes", "Let Me Feel As I Am", "We're Coming Home", "La La La La La La", and "Let's Think It Over". Earthquake/Tidal Waves, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The only album ever issued by Sylk – a southern group with a sound that's tight, but never too slick – nicely indie from production to conception, and very different than other mainstream soul records from the time! The record's part of the great underground tradition of homegrown soul from the early 80s – music that's neither tied to later disco modes, or trying to be electro funk – but which still has some of the best elements of the late 70s firmly in place! Sylk mix together mellower cuts with groovers that are more in a tight funk mode than any sort of disco style – and there's an honesty to the whole thing that really belies their roots in the small scene in Augusta, GA. They certainly gave this one the right title – as the album's a monster right from the very first note – a complex set of funky tunes from the 70s, and one that's grown to legendary status over the years! Calender have an approach that pushes past the gritty sound of the funky 45 generation towards some of the more extended modes of the club generation – but they're style here isn't ever disco at all – instead maybe that fast-funk mode that groups like Fatback and Kool & The Gang were hitting in the mid 70s! Arrangements are by east coast indie soul maestro Paul Kyser – who helped others make a similar transition at the time – and there's lots of cool instrumental touches throughout, especially on the keyboards.
