Fred Anderson & Hamid DrakeFrom The River To The Ocean ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 30.99
A sublime session that's co-led by two of the greatest figures on the Chicago jazz scene at the time of the recording – drummer Hamid Drake and tenorist Fred Anderson – both musicians that had been working in the city for years, but who really seemed to blossom in the new light that the 21st Century was bringing to their music! The tracks here are long and beautiful – maybe more spiritual than most anything else that Anderson ever recorded – still with enough edges to please his fans of freer improvisation, but building with more rhythmic currents and modal energy – thanks in part to contributions on the record from the great Jeff Parker on guitar, and bassist Joshua Abrams – a player who's really starting to find his way on a record like this! Harrison Bankhead plays piano – but throughout, it's the work of Anderson and Drake that really shines in the spotlight, as it should – on long titles that include "Planet E", "Strut Time", "For Brother Thompson", "From The River To The Ocean", and "Sakti/Shiva". CalifoneRoots And Crowns (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2006. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Rootsy noise sweetened by raggedly alluring melodicism from Califone – still one of the most vital and idiosyncratic groups of their time! We can no long heap the experimentalist tag on Califone – if we ever really could. They've got quite a sonic blueprint laid down after 8 or so albums, but they do continue to surprise us. Roots And Crowns is a strange and compelling blend of crackling, somehow rural sounds & percussion, strummed and sometimes chugging guitars, pastoral found-sound atmosphere and singing that's no more or less part of the ether than any other element. A timeless piece of work! Tracks include "Pink & Sour", "Spider's House" (which references Brian Wilson at his furthest out stage), "The Eye You Lost In The Crusades" (which references Nick Drake a bit in the guitar), "A Chinese Actor", "Our Kitten Sees Ghosts", "The Orchids", "Black Metal Valentine", "Rose Petal Ear", "3legged Animals", "If You Would" and more. ✨✧ Isotope 217Unstable Molecule (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic side project from the Tortoise side of the spectrum on the Chicago side of the scene – a set that features players from that group mixing with others, and working in these long tracks that really explore a love of jamming and electric jazz! There's definitely an influence here from 70s Miles and Herbie – but the sounds are more laidback, and very much in the spirit of a group from the genre-busting scene at that point in Chicago history – with percussion and drums from John McIntire and Dan Bitney, guitar from Jeff Parker, cornet from Rob Mazurek, bass from Matt Lux, and trombone from Sara P Smith – all of whom make the record feel like Tortoise meets Chicago Underground Duo, with a plus one in the mix! Titles include "Kryptonite Smokes The Red Line", "Prince Naymor", "Audio Boxing", "Beneath The Undertow", and "La Jetee". LP, Vinyl record album

Sam PrekopComma (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2020. New Copy ... $25.99 26.99
A compelling step forward for Sam Prekop – a key member of Sea & Cake for many years, but maybe an even more engaging artist on his own! This set's different than some of Sam's previous records – in that it's all electric, really electronic – with modes that hearken back to early ambient experiments, and some of the Japanese work of the 80s – but which also ties things in more strongly to the crucial contemporary vibe of his scene! These aren't retro electronic modes – as some are freewheeling in rhythm, almost evoking the early Thrill Jockey records of Oval – while others are tuneful and more direct, but still with edges around the sides – a subtle rasp that makes it clear that the record is as much a project of Prekop the visual artist as it is the musician. Titles include "Comma", "September Remember", "Never Met", "Above Our Heads", "Circle Line", "Summer Places", "The New Last", and "Park Line". LP, Vinyl record album

Sam PrekopSam Prekop (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A wonderful little record from this longtime stalwart of the Chicago scene. Sam started out in Shrimpboat, gained great fame in Sea & Cake, and here delivers his most wonderful performance to date – a beautiful set of jazzy pop tracks, with backing by Josh Abrams, Archer Prewitt, Jim O'Rourke, and the great drummer Chad Taylor. The tracks bristle with a lovely sense of energy, and they have a sophistication that's wonderful – matched with a lyricism that keeps them always sounding fresh. Sam's turned into a wonderful vocalist, too – and we're betting you won't be able to take this one off the turntable once you get started. Titles include "The Shadow", "Don't Bother", "The Company", and "Faces & People". LP, Vinyl record album

Sea & CakeRunner ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2012. Near Mint- ... $14.99
The first full out new album from avant pop veterans Sea & Cake in a few years – and it's among their most outright irresistible efforts in about a decade! We've loved this band from day one – and earlier than that even, if you want to count each member's time in preceding groups – so we're not about to start taking them for granted. It's tried-and-true Sea & Cake on one level here – breezy melodies, warm vocals and a laidback charm – plus their ever unique mix of live instrumentation and electronics. That said, the songs stand out more strongly on The Runner than on some of their recent work. They're as vital as ever! Includes "On And On", "Harps", "A Mere", "The Invitations", "Skyscraper", "Harbor Bridges", "New Patterns", "Neighbors And Township", "Pacific" and "The Runner". LP, Vinyl record album

TortoiseTNT (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1998. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 32.99
Tortoise's third album and a pretty remarkable creative leap for the inventive Chicago ensemble – now with the great guitarist Jeff Parker in the fold! Like their earlier records, TNT features a haunting mix of percussion, electronics, and jazz-oriented instrumentation – put together with an approach that's even more sophisticated than earlier releases. That said, the guitar makes a huge difference – and there's a lot of guest players in the mix, including horns and strings. Definitely one of their best ever! Titles include "Swing From The Gutters", "Four Day Interval", "Jetty", "Everglade", and "The Equator". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sea & CakeCar Alarm ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2008. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Sea & Cake's most instantly addictive album in years – one that blends the more anthemic style of their recent work with some bubbling synthy grooves! The group is nothing if not consistent, and they don't radically rework the set structure – with Sam Prekop's effervescent, breathy vocals over arrangements that sometimes lean on the uptempo rockishness that accented the previous LP, along with more glossy electronic impulses. Another essential album from one of our favorite Chicago bands! Titles include "Aerial", "A Fuller Moon", "On A Letter", "Car Alarm", "Weekend", "New Schools", "Window Sills", "Down In The City", "Pages", "The Staircase", "Mirrors" and more. ✨✧ TortoiseBeacons Of Ancestorship ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2009. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A diverse display of hard grooving avant instrumental soundscapes from Tortoise! All the descriptions of how groundbreaking Tortoise was in the earlier years, and forward looking they've remained throughout their career is all fine and good (and true) – but it isn't often discussed how flat out fun the group is at its best – and that's what we love about this record. Here they blend dynamics built from Krautrock and elastic proggy influences, electronic experimentalism, dubby bass, hypnotic soundtracky vibes, and even a little bit of raw, rugged punk into an overall approach that's Tortoise through and through. Titles include "High Class Slim Came Floatin In", "Prepare Your Coffin", "Northern Something", "Gigantes", "Penumbra", "Yinxianghechechengqi", "The Fall Of The Seven Diamonds Plus One", "Minors", Monument Six Thousand One Hundred", "De Chelly" and "Charteroak Foundation". ✨✧ TortoiseRhythms Resolutions & Clusters ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary project from Tortoise – kind of the "part 1.5" to their tremendous debut – as it features material from that record, remixed by members of the group and other key figures on the Chicago scene – all as a real testament to the many criss-crossing styles and modes that were taking place during these key post-rock years! The original material was performed by the version of the group that featured Bundy K Brown, John Herndon, John McIntire, Doug McCombs, and Dan Bitney – and remixes are by McEntire and Brown from the group – plus Steve Albini, Brad Wood, Casey Rice, Jim O'Rourke, Rick Brown, and even Mike Watt! Titles include "Alcohall", "Your New Rod", "Cobwebbed", "Tin Cans (Puerto Rican mix)", "Initial Gesture Protraction", "The Match Incident", and "Not Quite East Of The Ryan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TortoiseIt's All Around You (with download) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2004. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wow, this is SO not the Tortoise that first set the underground aflame in the early 90s – the group has evolved and opened up in ways we never would have expected. With It's All Around You it's emerged with an airy, open, stargazing set of tracks that resemble the languid atmosphere of Tangerine Dream as much as they do early post rock! Gone, for the most part from early Tortoise is that strong, rubbery electric bass groove and tightly thudding live drum sound. It's All Around You retains the bright vibes and sputtering electronics of the TNT album, and the out front, almost rock & roll guitar lines of the Standards album – and adds an ever present, ambient synthesizer bubble of sound to surround the thing. It's all so catchy, too, and almost sunny. If Tortoise hasn't really broken any new ground this time, it's only because they're the ones who broke it in the first place. Tracks include "It's All Around You", The Lithium Shifts", "Crest", "Stretch", "Dot/Eyes", "By Dawn", "Five Too Many" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Thrill Jockey, 2001. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
This groundbreaking Chicago combo once again moves away from the pack on what might be their best album – leaving behind the host of imitators that sprung up in their wake. Standards still shows a fascination with the spare and revolving rhythms that graced the group's first few releases, but it's also a lot more complex musically – with plenty of added electronics, noisy guitars, keyboards, and some of the most sophisticated production to date – proof that these guys are great, and always growing as artists. Titles include "Seneca", "Eros", "Benway", "Eden 2", "Blackjack", "Speakeasy", and "Six Pack". LP, Vinyl record album

Thrill Jockey, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Their first one, now a classic in the once-burgeoning "post rock" genre (much as we hate using that term) – and it's hands down one of best and most influential albums to come out of Chicago in the early 90s! A spare, rhythmic blend of moody grooves laid down by 2 basses, 2 drummers, and a host of other instruments. This is the one that still featured Bundy Brown, and overall, it feels more like the work of a core band effort than some of the more atmospheric and thickly-layered Tortoise records to come. Includes "Magnet Pulls Through", "Night Air", "Ry Cooder". "Tin Cans & Twine", "Flyrod", "On Noble", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Thrill Jockey, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You might know these guys in a number of other forms – Sam's the long-running vocalist in Sea & Cake, McEntire is from Tortoise and countless production efforts – but here, the old friends collaborate on new territory that's really wonderful – a set of electronic instrumental tunes that unfold with a great sense of beauty! We're tempted to read the title as a reference to Eno and Bowie working together in Berlin – and while that might be a bit of a stretch, there's definitely the energy of two respectful partners exploring new musical territory here – stepping out on beautiful new sounds that we hope are the start of a new chapter in their careers! Titles include "Ghost At Noon", "Yellow Robe", "Ascending By Night", and "Crossing At The Shallow". CD
