✨✧ Sly & RobbieUnmetered Taxi – Sly & Robbie's Taxi Productions ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Earthshaking bass and percolating drums keep this superb set rockin' in fine style! Well known as the lynch pin to so many great rhythms cut from the 70s onward, Sly & Robbie's reputation as one of Jamaica's baddest rhythm sections precedes them. This compilation focuses on tracks produced by the Rhythm Twins, and issued on their Taxi label at the cusp of the 80s, one of numerous peaks in their lengthy career. 22 tracks in all, essential numbers issued here with their mighty instrumental versions: "Baltimore" and "Real Love" by The Tamlins, "Rocky Music" by Struggle, "Tickle Me" by Thrilla, "Shine Eye Gal" by Black Uhuru, "Old Broom" by the Wailing Souls, "Amblique" by Taxi featuring Brian and Tony Gold, "Love and Devotion" by Jimmy Riley, "Revolution (dub plate Version)" and "Revolution" by Dennis Brown and "Heart Made Of Stone" by The Viceroys plus "Baltimore Version", "Rocky Music dub", "Real Love Version", "Tickle Me Version", "Shine Eye Version", "Drunken Master (Love and Devotion Version)", "Revolution Version", "Unmetered Taxi", "Unmetered Taxi Version", "Old Broom Version" and "Heart Made Of Stone Version". As usual, excellent notes and nice package from Pressure Sounds make this set complete! CD
(Out of print and includes slipcase. Please note – while the overall sound quality of this recording is excellent, it appears that at least one track was remastered off an original vinyl copy.)

Jimmy RileyRydim Driven (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Taxi/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.98
Jimmy Riley's definitely rhythm-driven here – given that the set was issued on the Sly & Robbie label Taxi, and also produced by the heavy rhythm duo themselves! Yet Jimmy's also the main star too – singing here with righteous, uplifting vocals that are very much in the best Island Records mode from a few years before – which, combined with the strong backings on the set, should have made this album as much of a runaway classic as work by Peter Tosh or Jimmy Cliff! Titles include a lot of great remakes of American soul cuts – like "I Wish It Would Rain", "My Woman's Love", "You'll Lose A Precious Love", "The Choking Kind", "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me", and "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" – plus original tunes "Give Me Your Love", "I Try", and "Delicious". ✨✧ Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassGoing Places ... LP
A&M, 1965. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Herb Alpert's definitely Going Places by the time of this set – and his trademark Tijuana Brass sound proves itself to be a great fit for just about any sort of number! The album kicks off with the wonderful "Tijuana Taxi", a sublimely jaunty tune that almost takes Herb into Bacharach territory – and which is followed up by the even-greater "Spanish Flea" – an ear-popping anthem that's one of the greatest bits of 60s instrumental pop ever recorded! And over and above those two tunes, the album's still got plenty more to offer too – a wonderful array of tracks all given the Tijuana touch, with titles that include "More & More Amor", "Mae", "Walk Don't Run", "Felicia", and "Cinco De Mayo". Dave DudleySix Days On The Road ... CD
Starday, Early 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
About as close as you'll get to a debut album from the great Dave Dudley – as the set takes his classic title track, mixes it with a few other indie singles – and adds in a few other truck-themed tunes from the Starday catalog for good measure! Dudley's got one of our favorite voices ever in country music – and his landmark "Six Days On The Road" set a whole new standard for road-based tunes – a winning track about a pill-popping, cop-dodging trucker heading home at the end of a long run! Dave sings some other great ones here – including "Last Day In The Mines", "Where Do I Go From Here", "It's Gotta Be That Way", "Cry Baby", and "Taxi Cab Driver" – and the set also features the instrumentals "Lee Highway Swing" by Chubby Wise, and "Hot Rod Guitar" and "Big Rig Guitar" by Joe Maphis. Other players include Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Ben Allison on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums – and titles include "Takeda", "Scattering Light", "Gambang Suling", "Taxi Dance", "Gratitude", and "Distant Sounds Of Change". ✨✧ Five Corners QuintetChasin' The Jazz Gone By (US pressing – with bonus track) ... CD
Ricky Tick/Milan, 2005. Used ... $5.99
An instant classic from Five Corners Quintet – acoustic jazz played with a dancefloor groove, and the perfect summation of a brilliant run of initial singles! The FCQ return jazz to its grooviest roots – played live, without processing or electronics, and able to hit a snapping groove that takes us back to the days when Blue Note and Prestige got plenty of play on the radio and jukebox! Most tracks roll along in a modal or waltzing mode that shares a lot with the best Nicola Conte projects of recent years – but the group have also got a real feel for their own tonal colors, effortlessly shading in each space and corner of the tunes with a sublime blend of ringing vibes, dancing piano, and beautifully-toned horn passages. Mark Murphy guests on vocals on the tracks "This Could Be The Start Of Something", "Before We Say Goodbye", and "Jamming" – and Okou sings on "Blue Cycles" and "Case Study" – leaving the remaining instrumentals "Trading Eights", "Interlope", "Straight Up", "Three Corners", "Lighthouse", and "Unsquare Bossa". US CD features the bonus tracks "Taxi Driver". CD

Beautifully groovy work from mid 60s France – all by a singer who's every bit as great as France Gall, Francoise Hardy, or other French greats of the time – but not nearly as well known! Almost all the numbers have a romping quality that lives up to the "ye ye" promise of the title – but there's also a vibe that's deeper than throwaway pop, as Philippe manages to bring a lot of punch to the tunes without ever losing her cool – as you'll hear on tunes that include "pas De Taxi", "Pour La Gloire", "Plus Rien", "C'Est La Mode", "On M'A Toujours Dit", "Sensational Jeffry", "J'Ai Rate Mon Bac", "Un Petite Croix", "Le Mannequin", "Bonjour Bonsoir Et Au Revoir", and "J'Ai Tant De Peine". Contemporary/OJC, 1956. Used ... $9.99
An obscure later entry in the Lighthouse All Stars series on Contemporary – but a great one too – and a set that's less less overflowing with big name players, than a well-conceived small group session! Rumsey's leading the sextet on bass, but other players are even more noteworthy – and include Bob Cooper on tenor sax, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Conte Candoli on trumpet, and Stan Levey on drums – as well as Sonny Clark on piano, making a rare west coast appearance here! The interplay between group members is slightly unusual for the scene at the time – still tightly-crafted, but often with phrasings that don't immediately scream "LA 50s". ✨✧ Philippe SardeMax Et Les Ferrailleurs/Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of obscure soundtrack gems from Philippe Sarde – back to back on a single CD! First up is Max Et Les Ferrailleurs – an excellent funky French soundtrack! Philippe Sarde scored the music for this obscure film starring Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider – and the best cuts have a cool French jazz sound that mixes guitar, vibes, trumpet, and hard on-the-beat vamping by the bass and drums. You may know the cool cut "Juke Boxes Chez Saidani" from a few compilations, and the album's got a few more cuts that have a variation on a similar theme. "Juke Boxes" features great popping bass and electric sitar – and other tracks include "Le Bal Des Ferrailleurs", "Description Des Ferrailleurs", and "Generique". Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres has a sound that's maybe more in keeping with some of the richer modes you might know from Philippe Sarde – that special sense of fragile emotion that can make his music so powerful, even when subtle – which it definitely is here at points, although balanced with some beautiful orchestrations handled by Hubert Rostaing, and bandoneon solos from Marcel Azzola. Titles include "Route De Nuit", "Cours A L'Argent", "Catherine", "Taxi", "Convalescence", and "Autrefois". CD

One of the most distinctive albums of the UK post-punk scene – spare, stripped-down, and completely sublime! Where most of their contemporaries grabbed the world by doing more, Young Marble Giants made their mark by doing less – just a bit of bass, some scratchy guitar, thin keyboards, and simple beats – all topped by the light vocals of Alison Statton – sweet and dreamy, but also a bit cold at times too! Honest Jons (UK), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! VariousNuda – 21 Exciting Cuts From The Italian Sexy-Comedy Disco Scene 1975 to 1981 ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99
That's a sexy lady on the cover, and there's lots of sexy sounds within – music from a whole new generation of Italian soundtrack genius – a time when disco influences were being used to transform some of the groovy modes that always made Italian film scores so great! The disco styles here are mostly in the rhythms – as lots of the instrumentation follows in ways that reference early 70s Italian cop and crime – and, to a lesser extent, some of the mod and bossa styles of the late 60s – all handled by the cream of the crop of the Italian film world, mostly with an instrumental approach! The set list is great, and really brings together the best examples of the genres, and avoids some of the cheesy, clunky tunes that sometimes got in the way on larger soundtracks – which makes for a cool compilation that really packs one hell of a punch! Titles include "La Settimana Bianca" and "Classe Mista" by Gianni Ferrio, "Taxi Girl" by Pulsar Music Ltd, "Scusi Lei E Normale" by Franco Micalizzi, "La Sposina" by Nico Fidenco, "Sette Ragazze Di Classe" by Fabio Frizzi, "L'Insegnante Balla Con Tutta La Classe" by Walter Rizzati, "La Liceale" by Vittorio Pezzola, "La Professoressa Di Scienze Naturali" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Grazi Nonna" by Enrico Simonetti, and "L'Infermiera Di Mio Padre" by Giacomo Dell'Orso. ✨✧ VariousTV Land Presents Favorite TV Theme Songs ... CD
Rhino, 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s. Used ... $12.99
A dream set – for our ears, at least! We'll happily admit that in the years before we became music-addled hipsters, we were TV-addled youngsters – and back in the 60s and 70s, we watched a heck of a lot of it! This 40 track set takes us back to those great days with a huge mess of famous TV themes – many that we'd nearly forgotten about, plus loads of familiar numbers, re-presented with much better sound, and complete notes on who performed them. You'll be amazed once you start checking this out, and you find how many songs that you like were performed by folks that you've probably already got in your record collection. Titles include "And Then There's Maude" by Donny Hathaway, "Come On Get Happy" by The Partridge Family, "Charlie's Angels" and "Barney Miller" by Jack Elliott, "Love Boat" by Jack Jones, "Good Times" by Jim Gilstrap and Blinky Williams, "Theme From SWAT" by Rhythm Heritage, "Batman" by Neal Hefti, "Ballad Of Jed Clampett" by Flatt & Scruggs, "Dragnet" by Ray Anthony, "Jeannie" by Hugo Montenegro, "Munster's Theme" by Jack Marshall, "Hawaii Five O" by Mort Stevens, "Mannix" by Lalo Schifrin, "Angela (Theme From Taxi)" by Bob James, and "Chico & The Man" by Jose Feliciano. VariousZanzibara 5 – Hot In Dar – Le Son De La Tanzanie 1978 to 1983 ... CD
Buda (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
One of our favorite entries so far in the Zanzibara series – a great set of grooves from the late 70s and early 80s – warmly laidback material, with a bubbling undercurrent of funk, and a sound that's somewhat different from other African material we've heard from the time! The rhythms often dip and turn slowly – almost with a watery feel, as the basslines groove up and down in midtempo waves of sound – often woven together with some tighter guitar parts, which also dance along nicely – topped by vocals that have a sweet undercurrent of sadness, too. The package is a great way to sample some of these lesser-heard gems – and it's put together with the same level of care you'd expect from Buda's Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Uzuri Wa Asili", "Baba Anna", "Rufani Ya Kifo", and "Mwana Acha Ujinga" by Dar International Orchestre; "Talaka Ya Hasira", "Nawashukuru Wazazi Wangu", "Taxi Driver", and "Kassim Amefilisika" by Mlimani Park Orchestra; and "Nilitaka Iwe Siri" by Vijana Dance Band.
