✨✧ James Brandon LewisFor Mahalia With Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tao Forms, 2023. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the most soulful sounds we've ever heard from tenorist James Brandon Lewis a reworking of themes from the music of Mahalia Jackson into jazz – all at a level that keeps all the spirit of the originals, while unlocking the songs as vehicles for freer improvisation! Given the mix of freedom and spirit here, there's almost a vibe that takes us back to the brilliance of Albert Ayler at the start – served up through the intertwining magic of Lewis' tenor, the cornet of Kirk Knuffke, cello of Chris Hoffman, bass of William Parker, and drums of Chad Taylor – all tremendous players, but resonating even more strongly in the presence of this project! James has been getting plenty of attention in recent years, but this could be the album that catapults him into the canon of contemporary jazz – thanks to amazing takes of "Elijah Rock", "Were You There", "Go Down Moses", "Precious Lord", "Deep River", "Wade In The Water", "Swing Low", and "Sparrow". 2CD edition features the full bonus album These Are Soulful Days – recorded by James Brandon Lewis with the Lutoslowski Quartet. ✨✧ Fay VictorLife Is Funny That Way ... CD
Tao Forms, 2024. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Vocalist Fay Victor pens lyrics for a jazz composer we're not sure we've ever heard with words before – modern piano legend Herbie Nichols, a player whose songs are often as full of angles and sharp changes as Thelonious Monk! And as you might guess from a style like that, the music doesn't easily lend itself to vocalization – but when it does, the results are amazing – as Victor's not only penned some fantastic lyrics for these tunes, she also delivers one of her best performances on record to date! The sound is modern, but never too outside – maybe like Jon Hendricks taking on some of Monk's music, in the way that Fay always retains a sense of humanity – working here with piano from Anthony Coleman, alto and baritone from Michael Attias, bass from Ratzo Harris, and drums from Tom Raney. Titles include "Descent Into Madness", "Non Fraternization Clause", "The Culprit Is You", "Shuffle Montgomery", "Sinners All Of Us", and "Bright Butterfly". CD

✨✧ Whit Dickey/William Parker/Matthew ShippVillage Mothership ... CD
Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's a pretty enticing title, and the record's got a pretty enticing sound as well – fantastic long-spun lines from the trio of Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Whit Dickey on drums – all players with a long history together, and a perfectly-matched sound on the record! Shipp is at his most spiritual here – really reveling in that new sense of warmth that's graced his more recent material – a quality that Parker is only happy to support and emphasize, while Dickey proves once again that he can be an incredibly versatile talent on the drum kit – sometimes almost feeling like a different player on each different track on the record. Titles include "Down Void Way", "Nothing & A Thing", "Whirling In The Void", "Village Mothership", and "Nothingness". CD
